[Q] two-page landscape ebooks? - Eee Pad Transformer Themes and Apps

So, I lucked out this christmas and recieved a Transformer, a welcome upgrade from my nook color. I've been looking all day to no avail for an ebook reader that'll do two page landscape for PDFs. I used Aldiko on my NC and was totally happy with that, but this screen is just so much bigger... feels awkward reading one page at a time.
So does anyone know of an app that might fit these criteria?

I use the stock MyLibrary app and use Calibre on my desktop to convert my books to epub format, works quite well for me.

Cool Reader has that and more. The UI is kinda crappy, but the features pay it off. Also it's free
Sent from my Full Android on Bravo using XDA App

Ireader is a good one

Fbreader does it as well.

Fbreader is great, but crashed very often.

Perfect Viewer has a two-page mode for CBRs or PDFs

I use the stock MyLibrary. I find it useful as the font size can be increased or decreased as needed, you can also read in two page or single page mode (depending on the orientation of the tablet).

wow, thanks for all the suggestions. Is there anything caliber esque that I can use from honeycomb? I'm away from my main computer for a few more days

If you're willing to part with $.99, ezpdf reader seems to be pretty good. And it supports highlighting/annotations!
Surprisingly, the built in pdf readers of MyLibrary and Polaris Office are pretty good too. I impulse bought ezPDF before finding out about the built in ones. I think the built in ones are sufficient if you don't plan on annotating.

EZPDF was one of the free ones on the Amazon appstore last month. Amazon is still doing a free app a day. I suggest installing it getting all the free apps, cuz you may never know when you may end up needing one of them.

Now that you mention it, I remember seeing that, and thinking that I had no use for it. How quickly things can change...
Does EZPDF save your progress so you can pick up where you left off later?

Yes, with the latest update that is one of the things they highlighted, I use it all the time and feel it is far superior than the other PDF readers. Developer is very active in improving and enhancing its features.
I think the built in one that comes with the transformer is pretty good
The only thing i dislike about it is the refresh rate on flipping pages,
+1 for EZPDF
I have tried many but I my favourite is EZPDf, its most complete
Why get a PDF reader when myLibrary handles it fine.
i got ezpdf for free from amzon. it is kinda slow to switch pages. I like repligo reader a lot better. Also allows you to annotate pdfs.

I agree. I've tried ezpdf, but Repligo is my favorite.
Nthing ezPDF, though I'd love to see one that can do a two-page display for landscape.
My experience is that MyLibrary's and Polaris Office's rendering quality is pretty poor. ezPDF's and Repligo's quality is about the same though Repligo is faster at switching pages due to Repligo rendering a low resolution version first which provides you enough information to know whether you wish to read that page or swipe to the next one. However, certain (complex?) pages fail to be rendered by Repligo (you just get a blank page with an X) whereas ezPDF manages those pages without a problem. If Repligo can fix the page fail issue then Repligo would seem to be the best out of the four.

Now that Adobe Reader has been released for Honeycomb I thought I would update the above with the fact that, then though I had assumed having come from Adobe that it would be the best, its rendering is just as poor as MyLibrary and Polaris Office. For the time being I will be staying with Repligo; and ezPDF as a back up.
Mantano Reader seems pretty good, 7 day fully functional trial available.
Repligo is the best on the market, but there are a few thing in my wishlist:
- Continuous scrolling
- Two page view
- Support for textbox
OfficeHD Pro can display PDFs very well. Although, you cannot make any modification to the file.
I've yet to find one that beats GoodReader on the iPhone. It allows annotation etc and has a great feature where you can zoom in but lock the screen horizontally meaning that the text can fill the entire screen yet scrolling won't mess alignment up. I've love them to port this app or have another one copy this.

Goodreader is one of the best PDF readers on the market of any device. Oh man do I wish they had a android version because I have tons of books with my annotations in them and for this fact I still have my iPad. The one feature that I absolutely love is locking of screen size. I emailed them back a few months ago and they never replied back if they are porting to android..
Repligo is the best, for me.

Book readers

one that comes with it is very basic are there better ones people are using, also i tried and epub book on there and i to put it in the root of the storage for it to be seen, is there not a way to put all the books in 1 folder and them be seen by the book readers
thanks for any help
Hi,
Have a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045190
Someone suggested that a corrupt epub file might be causing the trouble with My library. Me personally, never had a problem with it and I use it a lot.
As I mentioned in that thread, the best epub reader was considered Aldiko, available from the market.
Hope this helps,
rio
Personally I like the nook app the best. It smooth and has nice page turn animations.

It's in the Android Market.

Overdrive Media Console
I don't know if it is compatible with Honeycomb, but Overdrive Media Console is an excellent book reader. You can use it to check ebooks and audiobooks out of your local library for free. All that I have used through Overdrive gave me 21 days before the books expire.
I haven't received my Transformer yet but have been itching to give this app a shot on it. If anyone gives it a go, please report back with the results as to whether or not it works on the Transformer with Honeycomb.
Overdrive can be obtained for free on the Android Market.

I can't see the nook app on my transformer!! is there an apk file instead?
Don't have my TF yet, but I have a Nook Color. I like Aldiko better than the Nook's ebook app. Specifically I love the night mode (reverses colors) and the slide to adjust brightness on the fly.

I have aldiko, ezpdf, google books, and amazon kindle, but I actually like MyLibrary the best. IMO MyLibrary is not basic at all. I'm not sure how to solve the file location problem, but I think MyLibrary has the best features. You can highlight, annotate, search, organize bookshelves and do text to speech. The pdf viewer is pretty nice as well - it puts a preview blurry page before it loads, unlike ezpdf, and that lets you decide whether you want to skip the page or not (useful in magazines with ads).
I haven't encountered many bugs (just the rare force close), and I haven't tried the nook app yet though. I'll try it out later and maybe give my impressions.
Here's the various apps I'm currently using:
Amazon's Kindle - for *.mobi (Amazon E-book format)
ezPDF Reader - for *.pdf (Acrobat)
Perfect Viewer - for *.cbr (Comic Book RAR Archive)
So far I've had good experiences with the above 3.

+1. Also has a night mode and looks good in landscape. If the Asus app had a night mode, I'd just use it though. I wish the Nook app had the search features of the Asus app, but then again, I can't remember the last time I searched a book I was reading.

[Q] Reading books/novels on the Transformer ?.

Just wondered if anyone was using their Transformer for reading ?. I have a kindle but it would nice if I was able to sell it and use the transformer for my main reading device.
I guess the screen wouldn't be ideal for the eyes but the plus point would be that you could use it to read at night without the need of a light. Also the interface is nicer than the kindle, but the weight is substantially more.
Any thought's ?
Comics look very nice, but if you want read only texts then keep the Kindle.
I read books all the time in portrait mode, works well.

How long do you read for on average and do you feel any strain on your eyes ?.
I dont have my transformer yet, but read books using the kindle app on my archos 101 all the time (similar size and inferior screen). I usually dont read for more than 30 mins to 1 hour at a time though. I dont find the weight a problem.
you can change the brightness and contrast in the app as well as the page colour, so that its easy on the eyes.
It's not bad for reading books (but change the background to gray, because the white it too light on Transformer even on lowest brightness) but e-ink is just so much better it's hard to compare. For comics / PDFs - it's very good.
The screen is difficult to see outside during the day. And if it is in direct sunlight the screen is unreadable.
Anyone use google books ?, looks awesome and you can have 2-pages on screen simultaneously unfortunately its US only

I have tried out Books, the stock reader, Aldiko and Moon+. Of those 4 I like Moon+ the most. I would like Aldiko except that it FCs like crazy for me. So try Moon+ if you want an upgrade from the stock reader but can't get Books.
+1 for Moon+, clean, quick orientation/night mode switching. It doesn't have useless page flipping animation and displays a single page in a linear fashion (more like a long scroll than pages of books). This makes it easy to read as the font is huge, better than two page at a time imo. Maybe I just like ebooks and never liked the feel of real books.
I've briefly read a magazine using the Nook for Android app. Very impressed with it. I had the Zinio app on my iPad and this works just fine in comparison.
I have an original Nook for ereading and prefer it because my eyes strain if I read text on a backlight display for a long time. For me personally, reading on an eInk display will always be optimal but I could read on a tablet without a problem, so long as it is not for more than an hour at a time.
I've been using Cool Reader for a while now. Works great. Has a 2 page setting, and you can have different page patterns/colors.
I mostly use Kindle app, since most of my books are from there, and I like auto-sync between all my devices. By the way, do you know that you can sideload .mobi books in Kindle app (just copy them into /sdcard/kindle, it'll pick them up on next restart)?
For other formats like ePub, I use FBReader. Though these days I prefer to convert ePub to MobiPocket so that I can read all books in Kindle app (not because I like it more, just because single book index is more convenient).
That said, it's definitely far more convenient to read from the real Kindle. E-Ink screen makes a big difference as far as eye strain goes, and the light in the cover is good enough to read at night.
My primary use for the TF is reading. I read the first 3 game of thrones books on it. I'm sure the Kindle would be a better choice for straight-up ebook reading, but the TF fares quite well for what it is. Just know the limitations compared to eink, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The main advantage of the Transformer is that it is more "multipurpose."
I just want to say that eye strain was not a problem - I read 10 hours straight one time with the Mylibrary app, draining the battery xD. I used the app "screen filter" in the dark to lower the brightness even more. I'm used to staring at screens for long periods of time, so your level of eye strain may differ.
Yeah last night i was reading clash of kings and my eyes started to hurt after an hour or so at minimum brightness. It was still far too bright. I stumbled on screen filter. That's the key. If my eyes weren't allready hurting i think i would have been ok using that app. We'll see tonight.
I really like the presentation of the stock library app, it just needs more features like being able to change page color. And i'd give anything for a reader app that would put a series of books into the proper order without having to edit all the data in calibre.
Now if i could just get google earth working that would be the last of my gripes with this tablet.
Last night I read several chapters of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes using the stock reader (downloaded from the Gutenberg Project). Works great for me but it is large and heavy compared to most dedicated readers. I don't mind but I did notice the weight after a while. If you were thinking of buying this mostly as a reader you would probably be better off with the Nook or Kindle.
P.S. the sharp edges were a little uncomfortable too... not terrible, but enough that I noticed.
I do A LOT of reading, and here's how my usage breaks out:
1. Completely mobile: when I'm, e.g., waiting for a lunch order to be ready, I read on my Samsung Epic, primarily using the Nook app.
2. At home: when I'm at home and reading fiction for longer periods, I tend to use my Nook 3G.
3. At work: when I'm at work, I use my TF simply because I don't take my Nook with me.
4. Reading non-fiction: when I'm reading something where I might need to take notes/highlight, I use the Nook app on the TF.
5. In sunlight: when I'm reading in direct sunlight (I live in SoCal), I use the Nook.
Great thing is, the Nook apps all stay in sync for last page read, highlights, notes, etc., and so it's an incredibly seamless experience to go from one device to another. I've done more reading in the last six months than I've done in the last six years, just because I can make use of empty time so much better. I pretty much stopped playing casual games and use that time for reading.

Book Reader

Hi there
I'm buying an Android tablet soon and I will be using it mainly for book reading.
I have a couple of questions about it for anyone that uses their tablet for it.
Is there ANY way to import your own eBook files into Google's new honeycomb book reading application? I'm not talking about uploading them to Google's servers, just dragging a book to a location on the tablet or something so that the application picks it up?
Are there any other good eBook readers that include a smooth animated page turn (like iPad eBook apps) and displays 2 pages rather than a single page paragraph? Optimized for tablets...
Nook has the two page view, BETTER page turn animations than the google app (and anything ive seen on ipad), and allows sideloading of epub files locally.

+1 for nook app. It looks good, it's super stable, and it sideloads easily.
I agree. The nook app is wonderful. 2 page looks fine if that's your thing, and the page turns look great. Also the best part in my mind is the ability to read books you purchased in original font. Though, since sideloading is your thing...you still get the best viewing features in Nook.

Comic Reading on the TF

Just wondering if anyone has been able to get any comic readers to work. I've tried a couple, along with some .CBR files that I know work when on my desktop, but don't work on the TF so far, even with android reader.
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!
Perfect viewer
Perfect Viewer is great. It has quick menu overlays built in which make going between a entire folder very easy.
Free : acv (droid comic viewer), paid : comic reader mobi.
i use jj comic viewer. it seems better than the rest with cbr.
Perfect Reader is the BEST cbr reader out there.
I just read Dark Knight Returns and Strikes Again with Android Comic Viewer. Perfection!
I had issues and FCs with ACV. Perfect Viewer has been smooth sailing.
Perfect viewer and Komik are equally good imo. Have thrown quite a few at them and they have been excellent....
Perfect viewer is the best I have found. The others would often get memory errors, but not with PV.
Another vote for Perfect Viewer. I like ACV but it has problems handling cbr/cbz files above 20MB on the TF. It didn't have that problem on my N1 from what I can remember so it might be a Honeycomb-specific issue.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Perfect Viewer was what I ended up with. Everything else was FC'ing with the particular comic I've been trying to view
Comic Reader Mobi... which started out as a Windows Mobile app, right here on XDA, long ago.
Now it has an Android port and allows network streaming... and is about it get a big overhaul/update to 3.0 in a few weeks.
Komik is just awesome and already optimized for HC! No problem with it so far.
Hadn't heard of Komik.. will try it out. Personally, huge fan of Perfect Viewer.. great app and very fast.
Komik Reader is just.. WOW. I've been using Perfect Viewer for about a month now, but I just tried Komik Reader and wow. It's more perfect than Perfect Viewer! LOL
Just downloaded Komik Reader, will give it a go at lunch time
I prefer JJ, it seems to load faster for me with no crashes.
Is anyone able to open .cbrs in filemanage? Or am I forced to open it in the app? Since I download my comics from my network map, I'm in filemanager always and it'd be nice to just launch a book from there.
I've tried the latest perfect player again for the last couple days, works well but the swipe to page flip is driving me nuts, anyone else finding it not responsive enough?
Will try Komik, never heard of it. So far JJ is the easiest to use and configure for me.
komik works beautifully. i even got the paid version, opens zip n rar files. love it
