Book Reader - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
I'm buying an Android tablet soon and I will be using it mainly for book reading.
I have a couple of questions about it for anyone that uses their tablet for it.
Is there ANY way to import your own eBook files into Google's new honeycomb book reading application? I'm not talking about uploading them to Google's servers, just dragging a book to a location on the tablet or something so that the application picks it up?
Are there any other good eBook readers that include a smooth animated page turn (like iPad eBook apps) and displays 2 pages rather than a single page paragraph? Optimized for tablets...

Nook has the two page view, BETTER page turn animations than the google app (and anything ive seen on ipad), and allows sideloading of epub files locally.

+1 for nook app. It looks good, it's super stable, and it sideloads easily.

I agree. The nook app is wonderful. 2 page looks fine if that's your thing, and the page turns look great. Also the best part in my mind is the ability to read books you purchased in original font. Though, since sideloading is your thing...you still get the best viewing features in Nook.

[Q] MyLibrary App

Hi Folks
I liked the App to begin with, but like the other few Asus Apps, its proving a bit buggy. It seems to crash out when I view epub books, but I can't find out what it doesn't like. Can anybody recommend and eBook app?
Ideally I'd like to view 2 pages landscape, it would be awesome if I could rip the ebook reader from the Xoom and run it (its looks nicer from what I can tell).
IMHO the best reader by far on the Android is Aldiko (http://www.aldiko.com/). But since getting the Transformer, I'm using the MyLibrary... almost the same quality. I would suggest you have a look at the problems you are getting and try to see why. Maybe a corrupt epub? Try a free epub from google books (http://books.google.com/), it wouldn't be anything fancy but good quality.
If you are still having problems, please, give us more info,
rio
I had the same problems with the app just closing itself, after it had searched for all the viewable files. I found out it was 1 corrupt file that was causing the trouble. Sounds like you have the same issue. Remove them all, clear the cache for the app in the settings, then add them slowly to your collection to find the culprit.
Aldiko constantly force closes on me. Had to uninstall it. Using a combination of myLibrary and FB reader. MyLibrary won't read most of the books that Aldiko could read on my other tablet. I click and nothing happens. Sometimes the program will open, but not with the correct book.
FB Reader reads all my books but I don't like the formatting for the program...

The My Library app also crashes with epub books for me. Aldiko crashes as soon as I try and rotate the screen with a book. Aldiko also ignores the auto brightness function on the tablet and goes to 100% which is really annoying.
I've tried clearing the cache on the My Library app but this hasn't helped. An important point is that this didnt start happening until I put the latests Asus update on.. the version the tablet came with worked fine. Not sure if I can revert to the old version or if I should thought.

Have you actually set the brightness level in the aldiko app as well?

That's an excellent point.. I didn't realise it had one!
I purchased the Premium version of Aldiko and am pleased to say that it doesn't crash when I rotate the screen and works fine with my epub books that didn't work with the my lib app.
So would recommended the Aldiko premium app for anyone else having issues with Asus's My Lib app, doesn't solve the issue but works around it until Asus fix the issue.
P.S I think the issue may lie with the epub content or format. I don't think My Lib app likes epub books that have illustrations.
Developer from Asus
We are fixing my library app bugs, after testing it, and then planning to provide an update around 2~3 weeks later. More UI improvement and be consistent with Honeycomb UI. And we are adding to support posting what you are reading and your comment onto facebook sharing with your friends, too.
Further more, months later, we are going to provide users to store all their highlight / comments on the books into cloud storage, so, even users purchase another Asus device, he can still see all his history comments on his books before.
For the U.S. book store, we have Txtr already, and we are going to have another book provider very soon.

Thanks man,
Is there a way to submit bugs identified by users? Even only for the MyLibrary app?
Cheers,

I now have Aldiko premium working 100% and after some tweaking it looks and feels as good as the free Asus My Lib app.
Good to know that the issue is being worked on though!

As far as wish list for library would be a night mode
Different fonts
And formatting options

Have aldiko working but for some books the top lines are cutoff so I had to manually change formatting.
Also can't get it as dark asi want for night reading.
the main thing I like about myLibrary is the background texture + animations which makes it feel that little more tangible.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned moon+ reader (& pro version)
I use it over Aldiko as its much more customisable. Granted it's not as pretty but its features make it great for reading books the way I like.
How do you load .mobi books??? I do not know much about e-readers
Has anybody tried using calibre to manage their ebooks? Does it recognize the Transformer as an ereader? I've seen it used with a Kindle and an iPad and it makes converting/managing ebooks really easy.
MyLibrary stopped working after I upgraded the firmware. Does not activate and just closes. Anyone can help?
@koj012, which firmware version you upgraded to?
If you tried to clean the MyLibrary data/cache/db in Setting/Application/Storage use/MyLibrary, can your problem be solved?
Your feedback is valuable for us, thanks.

Book readers

one that comes with it is very basic are there better ones people are using, also i tried and epub book on there and i to put it in the root of the storage for it to be seen, is there not a way to put all the books in 1 folder and them be seen by the book readers
thanks for any help
Hi,
Have a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045190
Someone suggested that a corrupt epub file might be causing the trouble with My library. Me personally, never had a problem with it and I use it a lot.
As I mentioned in that thread, the best epub reader was considered Aldiko, available from the market.
Hope this helps,
rio
Personally I like the nook app the best. It smooth and has nice page turn animations.

It's in the Android Market.

Overdrive Media Console
I don't know if it is compatible with Honeycomb, but Overdrive Media Console is an excellent book reader. You can use it to check ebooks and audiobooks out of your local library for free. All that I have used through Overdrive gave me 21 days before the books expire.
I haven't received my Transformer yet but have been itching to give this app a shot on it. If anyone gives it a go, please report back with the results as to whether or not it works on the Transformer with Honeycomb.
Overdrive can be obtained for free on the Android Market.

I can't see the nook app on my transformer!! is there an apk file instead?
Don't have my TF yet, but I have a Nook Color. I like Aldiko better than the Nook's ebook app. Specifically I love the night mode (reverses colors) and the slide to adjust brightness on the fly.

I have aldiko, ezpdf, google books, and amazon kindle, but I actually like MyLibrary the best. IMO MyLibrary is not basic at all. I'm not sure how to solve the file location problem, but I think MyLibrary has the best features. You can highlight, annotate, search, organize bookshelves and do text to speech. The pdf viewer is pretty nice as well - it puts a preview blurry page before it loads, unlike ezpdf, and that lets you decide whether you want to skip the page or not (useful in magazines with ads).
I haven't encountered many bugs (just the rare force close), and I haven't tried the nook app yet though. I'll try it out later and maybe give my impressions.
Here's the various apps I'm currently using:
Amazon's Kindle - for *.mobi (Amazon E-book format)
ezPDF Reader - for *.pdf (Acrobat)
Perfect Viewer - for *.cbr (Comic Book RAR Archive)
So far I've had good experiences with the above 3.

+1. Also has a night mode and looks good in landscape. If the Asus app had a night mode, I'd just use it though. I wish the Nook app had the search features of the Asus app, but then again, I can't remember the last time I searched a book I was reading.

[Q] 11 essential apps for honeycomb?

Has anyone tried any of these apps on the transformer yet? If so, do you agree with the article, or do you have any apps you'd recommend instead?
http://www.everythingabouttablets.net/2011/05/03/1-apps-honeycomb/
I've tried all those, apart from the twitter one. Yes, they recommend some decent apps, and it's interesting to read others views on them. At the bottom of my second post HERE I've added a section I believe are 'must have' internationally available apps, with a couple that aren't in that other websites list.

Use moboplayer...very good
dropbox...don't like it at all on the android. On PCs it sync automatically, but on android it's "ondemand" so you might have a file in drop box, but it sits there until you "download it" kinda stupid if you ask me. They assume we are on phone and gives no options to just sync for tablets.
File Manager HD is the best file manager for a tablet, IMO.

Try Feedly, it is supposedly the best news feed/RSS reader app for Honeycomb...
The best twitter app on the tab I'd say was plume it looks better and has bigger Widgets.

Good to know. Actually I prefer it that way on a tablet (mostly because I put much work stuff on dropbox and don't want it taking place on the tablet). They should make an option so one could have it one way or another.
I like SugarSync best, precisely because it just syncs things in the background and documents can be directly edited. I use it with QuickOffice Pro HD, and I can open and save documents directly to SugarSync. For my writing projects, it's great: I can start a document on one machine, save it to Sugarsync, and then pick it up on any other machine seamlessly.
One more suggestion...
Check out the Samurai II game for something to show off your Transformer with.
It looks freakin' amazing.
I disagree with the comic viewer. I prefer Perfect Viewer.
I'm not a big comics reader, but I've enjoyed some of the free comics you can get under the Comixology app.
Comics look awesome on the Transformer!

[Q] two-page landscape ebooks?

So, I lucked out this christmas and recieved a Transformer, a welcome upgrade from my nook color. I've been looking all day to no avail for an ebook reader that'll do two page landscape for PDFs. I used Aldiko on my NC and was totally happy with that, but this screen is just so much bigger... feels awkward reading one page at a time.
So does anyone know of an app that might fit these criteria?
I use the stock MyLibrary app and use Calibre on my desktop to convert my books to epub format, works quite well for me.
Cool Reader has that and more. The UI is kinda crappy, but the features pay it off. Also it's free
Sent from my Full Android on Bravo using XDA App
Ireader is a good one
Fbreader does it as well.
Fbreader is great, but crashed very often.
Perfect Viewer has a two-page mode for CBRs or PDFs
I use the stock MyLibrary. I find it useful as the font size can be increased or decreased as needed, you can also read in two page or single page mode (depending on the orientation of the tablet).
wow, thanks for all the suggestions. Is there anything caliber esque that I can use from honeycomb? I'm away from my main computer for a few more days

Best comic book reader?

Anyone going to be using this to read comics/manga? Any recommendations on comic book reader apps?
I want one that can read from a cloud drive. The only one i've seen that can do this is the Challenger comics viewer app.
there also is CatComic which cost money but is worth it.

I tried it and its almost perfect, but seems to be missing one feature that I'm looking for.
I want to be able to tap to scroll, where the comic will scroll for me down the page when i tap the screen. And after it reaches the bottom, the next tap will turn the page. Do you know if Comicat has this feature?
unsure if it does, most of the time i just use the volume keys.
edit,
i just know of one viewer which does it for sure and that is Perfect Viewer but this one doesnt support cloud storages.
I would go with ComicRack. Though it costs money for the fully featured version, it is by far the best reader I have used. It also has a PC counterpart that will sync everything with it, like info, and where in the books you are.

ComicRack has the most robust features of all. However, Astonishing Comic Reader https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aerilys.acr.android has some Material Design, has no ads, and only has donations if you so choose.
ComicRack is awesome, but it is just too ugly for me!
I've always used this and found it very good.
Has been removed some time ago from play store, but developer keep working on it and you can download it from his website
http://www.manga-watcher.com/
I have been a long time user of ComicRack, but I just tried out the Astonishing Reader, and ... It's pretty good, but not enough to sway me away from ComicRack.
The ability to automatically group and sort by series, as well as other variables for a large collection is invaluable.
And when i loaded up a comic and paged through, while nice, it wasn't quite as silky smooth as I can get on ComicRack, there seemed to be a flash of loading with each page change.
Just my 2 cents, it might work great for you, thanks for the recommendation though, always worth checking out what else is out there, rather than getting complacent with "what I've always used"

:good: +1. BY FAR THE BEST!
Buka HD(ibuka.cn) seems perfect for this 4:3 screen (it has been optimized for Xiaomi MiPad, also 4:3), but it is only available in Chinese Language. The HD version can use the whole screen of N9, instead of having black bar on both sides). The online sources on Buka are also plenty enough.
Does ComicRack let you read comics from cloud services like CatComic?
I am also interested in this. It would be good experience for me.
ComicRack for offline comics and MangaWatcher for online (not available on google play but maintained) hands down the best of each world.
Comiccat is hands down the best. Syncs with the cloud as all and auto caches next issue from Dropbox so you can read through your whole library from the cloud. You can even set it to delete locally cached copies after reading.

I use both ComicRack and Comicat. One thing that I really don't like about Comicat is that when you sync to issues in the cloud, you get no cover art. That bugs me beyond belief.

another vote for comicrack. i had already paid for the desktop version so getting the the android version was a no-brainer. love the sync and the ability to sort titles. i got them sorted by published date so i can go through my old stuff chronologically like when i used to buy them as a kid.
