[Q] Noob: all ROMS also contain a Kernel? - General Questions and Answers

Hello.
Don't hate me for asking. Trying to understand.
When downloading a ROM, does the ROM includes a built-in Kernel?
I see a lot of talks about Kernels and I see that there are so many. But I am not sure if I am suppose to separately download a kernel before flashing, or do ROMs each contain a built-in Kernel?
Thanks!

Depends on the device, and depends on the ROM. Which are you using or interested in?
If the bootloader for your phone is locked, then the answer is no, the ROM will not provide a kernel.

Thank you!
I am talking about any of the ROM that are to be found in the Dev section. CM7, MIUI, and so and so on... (there are so many).
How does one know if the ROM has a kernel or not?
Bootloader? I don't even know what that is
All i know is that my phone is running MIUI right now (installed by the previous owner)

Not trying to be a ass, but if your bootoader is locked then you will not be able to flash a rom just trying to clear that up mate

Why would my Bootloader will be locked?

My bootloader is locked (Droid 3), and I'm running CM7.
If a device can be rooted, custom ROMs can probably be installed on it.

Each one has there own kernel for the examples you have typed out, there are other kernel's that you can flash once you have downloaded a rom, but that all has to do with personal preference I would have to say

Thanks you

Vendors lock bootloaders to prevent people from doing things they don't like - like rooting and modding their phones.

So people are forced to use the launchers and stuff they paid money for to be developed ;-).

So if you use a cooked ROM it also contains the proper kernel. if you can install not original rom (not update.zip provided by your brand ) then your boot is unlocked.

it is a leak, so as usual with leaks you flash it at own responsibility
If you go to android development and look at incubus' post you can get an cwm or twrp flashable rooted. Odex but works amazingly.

This is excellent.

Actually it depends on what version you use. The Incubus version can be flashed by placing it on your SD card and booting into your custom recovery.
If you do it this way you will not lose root either.
Before you ask the only modification Incubus made was to root & Odex
I have been running the leak since he posted it yesterday morning. I have no issues but as always mileage varies from device to device.
If it really is true that the version in this thread can't be rooted with current methods, then I would stay away from it. You never know when root will be restored so you could be stuck with a locked device for some time.
God
I can't wait for a Synergy rom based on this! They ar eby far the most stable roms I have used
keep in mind people if you flash that link with odin it will lock your bootloader and you wont be able to root.

As far as i know there is no way to actually go backwards on your OS.
You could search for the the 2.3.... for the nexus S but i doubt that youll be in any luck.
What i reccomend is to take it to the next step.
I have heard good things about it.
Not sure if the Trim does any difference to nexus S but i believe it might help.
Try the following ... was about to flash it yesterday to mine but the download link doesnt seem to work !

From what i remember ... if there is an unlocked lock when boot up your phone, that means it is unlocked.
I thingx that it means that the phone is unlocked dont know if the SIM is as well.
Maybe someone else might shed more light into that
Of you really want gingerbread, find the oxygen ROM thread in the development section. It is a great ROM. Or try the new CyanogenMod nightly 4.3 ROM. There are a few bugs, but it is quite quick.
Edit: are you still on stock, unrooted?
Just do a Google search for nexus s stock images and you should be able to get them off Google developers or something. Just make sure you have adb installed. Fastboot unlock, flash factory 2.3 images and relock fastboot. Tell me if you need me to go in depth and I'll post a more in depth tutorial as o in bed right now

[Q] Need help with installing custom ROM

So I got a used Atrix 2, and the previous owner had installed an SBF (or whatever it is) over all his previous rooted stuff.
So it's fully clean/legit now.
What I want to do is install kitkat on this phone (jealousy got to me) and I'm pretty pissed off for not getting the new features of the auto-updatable phones (Ex. Nexus 5).
May I please request a full guide on installing a custom ROM on this phone, from the beginning?
(Including the bootmenu installation, rooting the phone, etc.)
I'm requesting a guide that's 100% FAILSAFE as I value this phone and I don't want to waste so much money on achieving a bricked phone.
I need it from the basics from rooting and stuff, to SAFELY installing a GOOD STABLE build of kitkat 4.4.
Thanks a lot to all of you in advance.
My phone is running stock 4.0.4 ROM. No root, no hacks yet.
Thanks a LOT to this community.
I understand there are many risks, but really I want this to happen.

Hey man here is the step by step process.
First make sure you have correct drivers installed on your computer. Then install Kingo android root on your computer. Plug in your atrix and press root simple as that. http://www.kingoapp.com/android-root.htm
Second thing you need to do is download the BMM (Boot Menu Manager) from the google play store and thats it... (before you download BMM check on the you tube how to set it up and how to use it to flesh custom roms...
I hope i helped i know from the experience that atrix 2 guys are not very friendly to the noobs.

It's recommended that you only use systems 1, 3, 4, 5, & 6 for flashing. That being said, I personally have never tried to flash anything on system 2 so I don't know what the repercussions would, or even could, be.

On the contrary, I feel as though encouraging a person to read and expand their knowledge is indeed friendly. After all, there is a reason for the old saying, "If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach him to catch a fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime".

I'm perfectly capable of searching, I didn't get to RC status by being a n00b. The point is that you're making a positive assertion, and those usually need to be accompanied by some kind of evidence, otherwise your claim carries no weight.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 Trouble

Model: Samsung-SGH-I747 (AT&T)
Issues:
-Camera won't take pictures, yet I can see what it sees.
-Video won't record.
-Mic won't pick up audio.
-No audio from phone at all.
-SIM is not being read
-Whole phone is a little laggy.

I am using this kernel on my s3. Its really good, a lot of powerful options, and easy to install. Just make sure you read thru the entire OP and research anything you don't understand. Depending on how bad your phone is, it might not be a bad idea to odin the original firmware and start fresh.

This is a badass ROM. I am running the sprint version tho. This is the one ported to at&t. the kernel comes built in on the sprint version and probably is also on this one. I had to flash the att kernel to work with sprints new version of the s3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/development/rom-ported-wicked-x-v8-0-att-t2985227 Same thing there too. Read the entire OP at least and as much of the att and original thread as you can, and thank the devs.
