Rooting the Asus Transformer. - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, so i have two brand new asus transformers both on old 3.1 versions of honeycomb so i know they are both rootable. (us versions i assume) now some are saying we should use the razorclaw method by upgrading then using it but some people are having terrible results doing that because its upgrading them to unrootable firmwire. (i think .18 rather than .13). others are saying use the nvflash but that seems dated. so which method should we use? I'd be very annoyed if i upgraded then i couldnt root. also has the market been fixed so we could watch movies and download books even though we are rooted? or is it still not going to let us watch or read them?

3.2 & Apps Help/Suggestions

Alright, I bought my Motorola Xoom from Futurshop here in Ottawa (Canada) quite awhile ago. Still running the original 3.0.1 firmware. A couple months ago I believe many sites said they were pushing out the new updates to us, including SDCard support.
Nothing came to me, oh and now there is 3.2 that got pushed out. Still nothing. Quite a stupid company.
Anyways, I am tired of hating my XOOM.
Looking for the quickest and easiest tutorial on how to get my Canadian 3.0.1 XOOM up to 3.2.
Also, wondering if there is a list of Honeycomb apps, best things we can do with honeycomb/rooting/modding yet....anything else I should know.
Thanks. And yes I searched the forums. Not always easy to find exactly what you are looking for.
What Xooms do you Canadians get?? On the box it says " Xoom (MZ6**)"
Mine for example is a MZ601...
I wonder as it could be a Generic Northern US version, or a EURO....and the Model number also helps us identify whether it is a WiFi only or 3G/UMTS...
Oh right sorry forgot about that.
It's the WiFi only version, MZ604
Well I do KNOW that you can use the ROM from THIS THREAD but you will need to root first and the MZ604 WiFi Only does have a canadian specific version BUT I am unsure as to how you would root.
From memory, the WiFi only Xooms are ALL Identical in terms of Hardware, it is just those Xooms with 3G/UMTS capabilities that have hardware differences. I am going to go out on a limb and say you can follow ANY of the WiFi only guides....BUT BEFORE YOU DO...someone else may have to confirm that for me
Still have not found a good tutorial for 3.0.1 to 3.1.
Everything seems to be 3.1 to 3.2 or something else.
Help. Thanks.

I think only the US WiFi and 3G/4G versions have the 3.2 update. Just a guess.
My Xoom (i think the build/model number is HTJ85B? I am not really sure cause i can't find any info to where to look... but anywho) I had bought my Xoom Wi-fi only tablet from Amazon.com and updated it to 3.2. I rooted it using this tutorial -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760 -- And I got Super User without flashing new ROMs and kernels. It took me a few days (due to insomnia not allowing me to read the directions correctly so I became easily frustrated) but after i figured out the wrong line of code (Went into adb shell and then did adb devices, not the other way around was my mistake) everything was straight forward. Follow every line to a T and you should be able to get root and flash it in theory...
To ask, have you tried to go to "About Tablet" and clicking "System Updates"? I had to do it the first time to get my update pushed through on Wi-FI to 3.2.
~~Also to add since I forgot to... ~~
Apps I use are
-Dev-
Programmer Tool Dec-Hex-Bin
IPcalc
Android Assistance
Ternimal Emulator (Root)
Remote Conntect (Root)
MicroSD Mounter (Root) [cause my tablet the sd write was turned off... grrr] -- Forum post on it -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173195
SystemPanel Lite
-Other-
File Manager HD
App List Backup
AndExplorer
Dolphin Browser
Opera Browser
AlarmDroid
AndFTP
ES File Explorer (App APK Backups that are not on the market/download folders)
Ebuddy (messenger programs... 100% better then facebook chat if you do facebook...
Hope this list helps you out...
Yes, I have a Canadian MZ604 and you can follow the wifi guides, they root the same
Unlock, root and push CWM 3.2
With that you can install hammerhead rom and tachi kernel

3.2 root for all Transformers?

I am in the market for my first tablet and I am leaning on either the Transformer or the GTab 10.1. The only thing holding me back is being about to root the Transformer, I do like to root my android devices and put new roms and tweak them. I have read that only the B60 can be rooted anything later cant.
Today I seen this on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yktPHyOPMA
Is this a root for all Transformers running 3.2?
Would be nice BUT a) nothing mentioned about the bootloader, the HC Version doesn't really matter and b) some files like transformerrootDE_84411.zip are really old.
nothing new, old sbk keys used

[Q] Is Netflix avaliable in android market for EEE?

I thought the Netflix app became available for the EEE a month or so ago, but when I check the market it isn't showing up on my tablet. I know a while back when Netflix first came out on Android I had tried to sideload a APK but had since removed it since it did not work. Did I miss a memo somewhere about this? Anything I can do, or do I need to sideload it again?
Non rooted transformer
I think you have to side load it or something, search the forums for the netflix apk..
I just pulled the apk off my phone and pushed it onto the TF and rebooted.
Works for me.
Ah, no problem then, I just figured with all the talk of Netflix being able to run on the transformer that i thought it would show in the market. will just sideload it then
I've tried installing netflix a few times. I cant get it wotking on mine. I have a eee pad with B80 build so im not rooted. I also live in Canada so not sure if thats screwing me up. No problem on my ipad2 though.
Ps, cant post in the proper forum but thanks rayman84,for all the hard work at getting us rooted. Its appreciated.

From everything I've read, you have to make it think you are in the US using a US IP address when you log in the first time. Most people use VPNs to accomplish this.
As long as you have the allow non-market apps checked it should install.

Q: TF-101 vs TF300 rooting / netflix, etc..

I had a TF-101 rooted with 3.1 with recommendations from this forum. I could still run Netflix on it and watch my interlaced avi movies with moboplayer without problems.
Then i thought to upgrade to TF300 and pass on the old transformer to a family member. Then i learned with the TF300 running ice cream sandwich that i could not root and still watch netflix, and all media players like moboplayer/mx player crash periodically or do not do deinterlacing (bs player). So i thought o pass on the TF300 and keep the more useful TF-101. And then the TF-101 was lost on a flight (stolen from baggage).
So now i wonder what to do:
Is there any workaround for netflix on rooted TF300 ?
If i am going to buy another TF-101, i fear that it will come with 4.0, Back in 2010, when i rooted it, it was said that you could not root a TF101 from 4.0. So, what do i need to watch out for if i am going to buy another TF-101 that i want to get rooted ?
Thanks!
Sounds like you've been away for a while. You need to read up a little.
You can root the TF101 up to the latest firmware.
Thanks
Yes, have been away quite a whilte. Once i had the 101 rooted and set up with everything i was happy. And the TF300 is fairly recent. It also seems as if it possible to root a TF300 without unlocking, which hopefully should allow to keep Netflix running, or at least i can try and if it doesn't work, return it.
What i am mostly puzzled about though is why all these video player apps (moboplayer,...) do seem to crash/stop on my files whereas this never happened with TF101. I guess i have to investigate more forums for that problem *sigh*. One would have hoped that things got better with TF101->TF300 and 3.1 -> 4.0, but unfortunately, not so much *sigh*.

[Q] Asus eee Pad Memo 171 (ME171) - SKU Conversion / ROM / Root

Good morning everyone!
I've spent days looking through the forums and decided to join and start a thread on my own as there is only little information on the device I'm using.
Well, I'm a German working in China and recently I bought the Asus Memo 171. As it seems it is only sold throughout Asia getting more information was difficult due to my lack of skills in Chinese - result: I didn't know there was that big of a difference from the Chinese Version (SKU) to the rest (TW and WW).
In my device there is not even an option to add a google account - no sync, no gmail, no play store, no apps. I can't even login to play store online. The only thing on there is the "HiMarket" which is the chinese version of an Android market but unless someone can actually read Chinese Characters it's hopeless.
The result makes the device pretty much useless for me; I can use the pre-installed apps but that's it.
And here's the point:
I would love to get the WW SKU on my device but my knowledge in rooting and so on is based on an old HTC WinCE device years ago and information on the ME171 is pretty rare.
I went through many of the TF101 and Prime threads for more information to change the SKU (EP101_UPDATE etc.) but it seems the ME171 is slightly different.
On the Asus Homepage I can get Updates for CN, TW and WW (China, Taiwan and worldwide) but SKU conversion of course is not possible and neither downgrading - at least not without root, bootloaders and so on.
As far as I have seen CWM does not work on this one, or maybe it does but no one tried...
What do I need to get it done and what information do you (that one goes to the experienced users around here) need to get me started?
I hope someone is willing to spend some time on a device that maybe 3 people are using .
Does anyone know of similarities to the Nexus 7 or other Asus devices which would make it a lot easier or is there some guide that basically works for every Asus Android device?
Would gaining root access and replacing the recovery image work to switch the SKU? The only thing available from Asus is one .raw file for one specific version and I'm not sure if that's sufficient. But if yes, are the firmwares similar to other devices so that the usual rooting procedure works? (Thinking of Sparky's debugfs automated root tool)
Right now I'm on 4.0.3 (me being stupid got all the OTA updates and I don't even know how to downgrade...originally it runs on Honeycomb) and I'm willing to get everything on this machine out as information for the helpful people in here (ROM dump or whatever you might need).
I'm looking forward to get this thread alive and keep it that way so please, dear experienced users, give me (and probably some more users who are using the Memo) something to start with to make this pad useful!
Thanks to anyone interested in this in advance and don't hesitate to ask for more infos.
Glad to meet a ME171 user in this world! LOL
OK, I got a ME171 CN recently, and just Root it sucessful ( almost... )
Please try Generic Debugfs root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817622
I'm got your message and answer all I know. ^_^+
