Same here. I am afraid to leave it plugged in for too long. I am sure my fear is unfounded but it get hot enough to make me nervous.

When the tablet is 100% charged, it doesn't get as hot anymore. When nothing is plugged in, its cool as a gem. I wouldn't worry about it. Laptop chargers run about as hot as this.

Yeah, it will get a little warm, maybe even a bit too warm to hold in your hand for more than a few seconds. If you need to unplug it to stow it or take it along, unplug your TF from it and let it sit for a couple minutes.

Same, the charger feels dodgy to me.
Think we can use an apple charger like this for the Transformer cable?
edit (cant post link but its the apple usb charger that is larger and more rounded versus the tiny box like one for phones).
the apple one says output of 5.1V 2.1A
the asus one says output 5.15V 2.12A (I think, text is ludicrously small)
Loving the device by the way, but yeah the powerpack does not inspire confidence at all.
Someone mentioned in another thread that part of the reason for the charger getting so hot is because some people have been plugging it in the wrong way. The adapter should be plugged in with the "S" in "ASUS" lining up with the wider prong on the outlet

True, but someone's TF charger has already melted see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13894929&postcount=15. No charger should get so hot that it melts.
I don't have this problem. The manual shows a diff kind of charger than I got in the box though. I just got my tf today. Manual shows a charger consisting of a power plug piece, another piece which plugs into power piece, and USB cable that plugs into that. I have just a power piece which has a USB port on it, plug in and go. Charging from first time charge on both dock and tablet for 5 hours or so right now, tablet is charged full just dock still charging, adapter is barely warm.
The charge light on my dock is still red though, thought it would have changed to at least orange by now. The tablet has been at 100 for say 2 hours, and removed from dock for about an hour.
Update, it is getting hot after being plugged in for around 6 hours, not so hot that i'm worried. What's more worrisome is that the docks charge light is still red after all that time.

The power plug is already attached to the PSU. Similar to how Apple laptop power bricks allow you to put on a different power plug.

Anybody actually got a temperature reading?
gonna see if I can charge the thing at work and use our IR temperature reader to get a reading
Using an IR ThermoGun I get 58.1 degrees C or 137 degrees F
Thats after an hour currently charging Tab and dock together
Mine is warm when it is charging but not hot. As soon.as the charging completes it shut down and is ambient temp.

I left mine plugged in overnight and it wasn't hot at all in the morning so +1 to this statement.

That is indeed what I was agreeing to in my post yes.. I mentioned in a previous post as well that it got hot while actively charging, but not excessively so, and nowhere near the point that something would melt.

Well ladies and gents, I think either my eee pad has been sucked dry or the charger fried, or both. I went to turn on my pad and found out that both the dock and tablet were at 0%.
I plugged it in got it booted and after an hour, the orange light on the side of the dock stopped blinking and stayed orange, as if it were charging, but the pad still showed at 0% for both pieces. I unplugged the charger to find it was so hot it was almost untouchable and as soon as I unplugged, the tab shut down. Also the dock was not usable to type while plugged in. Am I screwed with this piece?

Zip lock bag your charger and put it in the freezer.
lol really? put it in the freezer? Hey test the usb cable first by connecting it to the computer and see if you get a response. If so for the most part you have like a 90% chance its not the cable. More then likely the adapter is messed up as stated above. The AC plug itself is detachable, its hard to get off but it comes off. You will see its two pieces one big piece and a slimmer piece. Dont rember witch direction it SLIDES off but it comes off. Just check around it and make sure its not blocked or anything. But yea might have to get a new one.

Really. There is a heat sensor in the charging cube that disengages the link in case of overheat. Zip lock bag is there to keep out moisture.
Crazy. I unplugged the charger, let it sit. Plugged it in 20 mins later and all of a sudden my tablet has 60%. This thing is weird. Gonna have to teat more thoroughly ans possibly get a new charger

Good. Just remember. If this happens again but next time the safety won't just disengage, then throw it in the freezer like I instructed.

Then of course chances are you won't do this. Most people are not modders because they are too afraid to do anything out of the ordinary. This is why the ipad is so popular. Anyway, if this is your case, then I guess the alternative is to get a new charger.
I just want you to know that i tried Goodintention's advice and it worked for me. That being said, do not wait to get a charger replacement by following DevCake's thread on how to make up your own charger for the TF. Once these chargers start going bad the only way is downhill.
My second charger died yesterday and I am following Devcake's advice.

Should this phone be able to handle playing music from a downloaded spotify play list and run navigation at the same time through blue tooth without over heating or draining? I had the phone in a windshield dock the air conditioning was running. I noticed the phone was hot to the touch and despite being plugged in to a charger the battery was draining. I'm on the latest clean rom not overclocked.
After taking it down out of the windshield and keeping it right by the AC vent it cooled down but the battery still drained.
ETA: more details and clarified the question
I use panodora and navigation and haven't had an issue. If it's really hot out I aim one of the AC vets at it and that keeps it nice and cool. One of my docks is right below a vent so it works out perfectly.

It gets warm for sure but not hot to the point of overheating. If it's in the sun though that could make it get too hot.

Probably a dumb question but what's the voltage output on the dock? I had the same problem with my original Evo back in the day using a generic 600mA charging cable. Switched to a higher output and it stopped, although it's still charged SUPER slow while using navigation and music...
Never shut down or anything but maaan that puppy got hot.

Ah okay gotcha. Does it plug into a usb port straight through the car then or is it a cigarette lighter? I know this is irrelevant to the heat issue, but that losing battery while plugged in drove me nuts. Turned out the usb cable/plug I had wasn't pulling enough power from the cigarette/accessory outlet in the car to keep a positive charge going under load.
The phone showed it was being charged through "usb" instead of "a/c"
It's a cig lighter usb adapter. Never had a problem like this with any other device but I've never had a phone with this large a screen either.
Does it say it's charging through a/c under Settings->Power? Or usb? I know usb charges much slower. Most wall or car chargers list the output on the plug somewhere.
From what I've seen, anything around one amp should trigger a/c charging mode. Never had a problem with charging no matter what I run then.
I didn't look but the orange light was on and I saw the charging animation. I'll look at it next time I plug it in.
Hope that's at least helpful for the not charging thing anyways. Sorry for the semi-OT.
Anyways, I know mine gets warm when charging and when using navigation and gps. Combine the two and it gets scary. This has happened with my Evo, Evo 3d, and HOX. Dunno.
It worried me enough to post about it.
I just looked at the charger and is says 1000 milliamps max.
So your question is whether the phone will get hot while charging the battery and using navigation? Uh... Yeah, it will do that.

No my question was will running navigation and streaming at the same time cause it to overheat. One of the first things the phone do when it over heats is stop charging.
I had the same heating issue so I changed the charger - now, I use one that outputs 0.7 instead of 1.0. The default charger outputs 1.0.

On my way home from Atlanta I stopped by an AT&T store and explained my problem. I purchased a 30 dollar usb car charger from them. On the way home I made sure it said charging on ac. I used Google navigation and spotify playing cached content and lost 20% in 2 hours. If this phone can't keep up with running 2 things at once I'm going to have to get something else.

On my drive back today I resorted to turning off the screen when GPS was running. It was charging, but very slowly.
So a factory reset improved it for you? I might try that.

My cousin just got this tablet a few days ago. She likes it alot, but she said it get's really hot while charging. I have not been able to see/feel it myself since I live in a diff. city, but I am trying to find out for her if this is normal for this model. This is her first tablet so she is worried if there is something wrong or not.
It's a fairly high power charger, they get hot when used. Unless it's so hot she's worried it might melt or catch fire, it's no problem
The TF700 charger is rated at, what, 12-15W? That's quite a lot of power in such a small device. Have you ever used one of those small iPhone/iPad chargers? They get pretty damn hot as well.

She has a iphone and never has complained about the charger on it getting hot. Would it be correct to say that the asus charger get's significantly hotter than the Iphone charger?
I wouldn't say my TF700 charger gets any hotter than my iPhone charger.
I did just realise when re-reading your post that it might be interpreted that the actual tablet gets very hot while charging? Or is it the charger?
Either way, a battery gets heated up when charged, so both the charger and battery/device itself can get hot, although neither should get so hot that they're uncomfortable to hold. If it feels like you'll burn your fingers holding it that's a bad thing. Otherwise it should be fine

I was playing Ocean Tower while charged for several hours, the tablet itself got VERY warm, the charger itself was also quite hot. Not hot enough to burn me, but definately hot enough that i didnt want to touch it. I think im gonna stick with it for now, if it does start melting then im gonna be going directly back to the store and make a lot of noise. No charger should get hot enough to create a fire hazard!
We should have some prime users who upgraded to comment here.
I upgraded from the prime and don't remember the prime getting warm like the infinity when charging. The infinity gets quite warm, close to being hot.

The little charger brick...yes that thing gets warm when charging from say 17% to full up.
I switched from the Acer A700 to the Infinity.
You want warm try the Acer HD tablet.
The charger of the infinity gets about 50 °C when charging a long time but that's no problem
My charger gets hot as welll when it is charging the tablet/dock. Not so hot that i think it will set my house on fire while I'm asleep, but inconvenient to touch, yes. As Einride said, though, most high-powered chargers get hot.
As for someone mentioning the iPhone charger and it not getting hot: that is not a high-powered charger, and neither is my SGS2's. Not all crApple products are high-powered.

It seems to charge pretty fast from the A/C charger but plugging it in to your Pc seems to take FOREVER.
Mine takes forever charging no matter what. Ive put it on the charger at 50% and it took 3hours ish to get back to 100%. Granted my phone could probably go two days with four hours of on screen time too.
Granted I can't speak for stock because I rooted asap. I mainly use AC 95% too. Not sure if how much root affects it, I'm on synergy (awesome btw).

Charging on AC is really fast for me too. Car charging and PC charging not so much.
GNEX was my fastest charging smartphone...but also had the worst battery life.

I am betting it's because most of us have 1amp or 2.1 amp chargers available in the car. I, personally, still use the motorola 950mAh car charger, which speeds thru the charging process too.
USB still pumps out 500 mAh at best, always gonna be slow.
None of this has to do with the phone, btw.
Slow charging for me. But its random. Sometimes its decently quick but other times it takes forever to charge. Fastest phone to charge for me was the OG droid.

I've noticed that when its plugged into the wall charger, its super fast, computer though is utterly slow.
Its really fast, about an hour and I'm at 100% from 0%.

There is a thing in the charging port that only the samsung charger activated that allows charing upwards of 1000 when using normal micro usb only does 300.
If you download imosyens leankernal he developed it into the kernal that you go to terminal editor and put "ffc"and charger will go as fast as thr samsung one.

Lol I'm the opposite. Coming from a Galaxy Nexus this phone charges much slower. Galaxy Nexus would be fully charged in maybe an hour and a half. With the GS3 it's closer to 3 hours for a full charge. Hear it's the low-power brick that comes with it though.

Yep. For example, the Motorola SPN5400A will charge the S3 in about 1\2 to 1\3 the time it would take if plugged into a USB port. I honestly believe it's because it has quality internal circuitry. Hell, at .95 mAh it charges quicker than most 2.1mAh chargers. Again, has nothing to do with the phones, it's the chargers that come with.
mine charges pretty quick as well. best phone ive had hands down.

3 hrs seems off. I think I could wire mine to my electric razor and charge it faster

Just for info, my wireless energizer pad and Verizon wireless door charge faster than the factory charger. And my factory charger will charge between 1.5 and 2 hours from 3% or 4%.
If you are taking over 2 hours I would check the battery and make sure it isn't swollen or something wrong with it. As far as usb most ports are "as stated above" not going to supply juice fast enough to charge quickly.
And it's probably worth seeing if something is on thats sucking power, Bluetooth, gps, facebook, anything that sync's alot. And using almost as much power as the usb is putting out.
