[How To] Put Phone In Download Mode and/or Recovery Mode - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

This is very simple and works like a charm. I will show you two things.
How to put your phone in recovery mode and how to put your phone into download mode. This is for the i727 Skyrocket from AT&T, probably works with a lot of other phones as well. Follow my instructions exactly.
To put your i727 Skyrocket phone in recovery mode.
1 ) Turn your phone off. Power it off.
2 ) At the same time, press and hold volume up and down and power at the same time. Your phone will come on.
3 ) Keep holding even after the vibration.
4 ) When you see the first SAMSUNG white text, let go of the buttons.
BUT WHAT IF I’M/YOU’RE TRYING TO GET TO CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY?
1 ) Before the above you should have downloaded ROM Manager from the Android Market and Flashed ClcockworkMod REcovery. When it ask you what version you should select “Samsung T-Mobile GalaxyS2.” I know it says T-Mobile but select it anyways.
2 ) From Rom Manager you can select Reboot into Recovery OR you can turn your phone off and follow my previous top instructions.
———————
To put your i727 Skyrocket phone in download mode. (This is typically done to flash back to stock if you bricked your phone or are getting excessive errors)
1 ) Turn your phone off. Power it off. Set your phone down.
2 ) Take your USB cable and plug it into the computer/laptop ONLY.
3 ) This requires both hands. Pick up your phone and hold down the volume up and down at the same time then plug in the USB to your phone with the other hand.
4 ) Keep holding the volume up and down buttons. The phone will vibrate, still hand and when you see Download mode. Let go.
CONGRATS.
BUT WHAT IF I/YOU WANTS TO FLASH THE STOCK AT&T ROM BECAUSE OUR PHONE IS MESSED UP.
5 ) Download the stock from HERE
AT&T user select the Download Stock TAR for SGH-I727
Rogers user select the Download Stock TAR for SGH-I727R.
6 ) Extracted the above TAR file.
7 ) Open Odin 1.85, run Odin3+v1.85.exe or Odin.
8 ) Odin will recognize your phone if there’s a yellow box.
9 ) In Odin select PDA and find the TAR file you downloaded.
10 ) Make sure Re-Partition is UNCHECKED. It should be by default.
11 ) Click Start
12 ) CONGRATS your phone will be back to stock like you bought it from the store.

Clockwork has already put the AT&T version in.:good:

hey man great write up. You may want to add to the op that for rogers version to get to download mode you only hold vol. down not both vol. buttons. Other than that same steps apply.

Is your phone a Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE Skyrocket SGH-I727 ??
No. You are in the incorrect forum. If you use anything from here is will not work and anything you flash may brick your phone. You need to find the proper info for your phone, which is not here. Try google or the search feature.

You lose cwm. The backups will still be there. But you'll need to put cwm back on to use them.

I thought that was the case if you had the backups on an SD card, does reflashing to stock not erase the internal ones?

What were you doing to get to this point? Do you know how to get to download mode? (Yellow digger)

um around last week sometime i tried to flash to stock cause my phone was stuck at clockwork recovery and now its at this. No i dont.
Wrong forum.
You also need to provide way more information than that.
Have you tried booting into Download Mode (read Step 1)? If that works, use Odin One Click to restore the stock ROM.
What were you trying to do before this happened? Did you unplug your phone during a tethered restore (a.k.a. Odin)?
Edit: Sorry, guess I was too slow. Anyway, use the link above to get into Download Mode. If that doesn't work, look into making a jig.
Ok well hopefully you can get into download mode with just using the phone
U will need odin one click to get back to stock (jf6)
Once odin is extracted - follow these steps
First pull the battery
Reinsert battery
Hold vol up and vol down simultaneously
While holding these buttons, Insert usb into phone
Sorry I can't give u links to all of these things at the moment. You will find odin in the dev section.. make sure u are using the JF6 version

[Q] soft bricked tablet tab 2 p5113/pp5110? Firmware upgrade encountered an issue.

I have a samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1. It came to me as a pt 5113. When I rooted it and updated the software to 4.3 using cmworld nightly it changed to p5110.
I wanted to downgrade because I wasn't able to use a lot of things and felt limited. However, my tablet won't turn off until it runs out of battery and I'm trying to just return it to the way it was before I tried to downgrade but it's not letting me. So I think it might be bricked. I don't know if it's a soft brick or a hard brick... I'm just so lost. Can anyone help me find how to straighten everything out if it can or provide me with step by step instructions.
Is there a way where I can just start fresh and just turn my tablet back to the way it was when I first bought it?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am now stuck on the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." However, Kies won't recognize my tablet cause it's rooted and stuff. So I can't do that.
I tried using these websites:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2258628
http://www.infamousdevelopment.com/i...890#msg890)*
they are essentially the same. I'm on odin right now and it won't go further than

my screen won't go into download mode or recovery mode.
I believe it's soft bricked but everything I find won't work. What should I do?
I also tried plugging it in and out with the odin screen up because some people said it helped but that didn't help me.
I tried doing the adb command window but my computer doesn't show a list of devices indicating that my tablet isn't connected... but it is..
What should I do? Dang Nabbit! :crying:
You can force the tablet to power off by holding in the power button about 10 seconds. It will then cold boot after a few seconds if you do nothing.
As soon as it powers off, try going into recovery by pressing the power and volume down keys until the Samsung 10.1 logo appears. If that fails, force power off again and try going into download mode, pressing power and volume up keys. If you can get into the download mode, connect to your PC and try installing TWRP with Odin.
Just a reminder, volume down is next to the power switch. Also remember to unplug the power or you can't get into either download or recovery modes!
Installing TWRP Recovery:
I use TWRP, some good instructions are here You already have the drivers and Odin installed, so skip that part, and go to where he installs TWRP Recovery with Odin.
- Go to ODIN window and click PDA. Browse your PC for the TWRP Recovery .tar file and then load it into ODIN.
- Don’t change any default settings of ODIN. Press the START button when you’re ready for the installation process.
- After the install is complete you will notice that ODIN says PASS and the tablet restarts.
- Wait for the tablet to reboot and then it will load the Android OS. This means that the installation was successful and you can disconnect the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 from your PC.

See if that gets you going. Then you can try flashing a stock ROM.
Or try flashing this ROM It is a rooted version of stock 4.2.2 with busybox.
Be sure and wipe Data/Cache/Dalvik Cache as he instructs. This should get you back to a stock, rooted ROM.
No fix found so far

Ok, what does one do if one can't get to download OR recovery? It's starting to really P5113 me off!! I have been reading for two days now and still can't get this thing running. I've tried so many things I can't even remember them all. A friend wants to buy my tab 2, but I can't sell her a messed up tab. Somebody please help me out. I haven't been able to use Odin, no d/l mode. Can't even flash a recovery! Still can't get back to the basics and root the damn thang! There has to be a way to recover from this error "Firmware upgrade has encountered an issue". I'm ready to give it an issue of my own!
tab 2 10.1
after updating my tab2 10.1 using odin it failed and im in firmware upgrade encountered and the bad thing is i cant enter download or boot loader and also pc cant recognize it .please help .thxxxx
Sorry to necro bump, but did anyone find a fix to this? In the same situation. Thanks.
im in the same boat
Has anybody resurrected an Tab 2 when the Recovery Mode wont boot?
I bought a Tab 2 on Ebay, seemed he try´d to root it, and failed or the wrong Firmware.
Now i have it here, disassembled so i can cut of battery power and still, after an hard reset with no battery, i cant get with power + Volume up (or down) into download or recovery mode.
Is there any chance left or has the seller killed the nand flash partitions?

Probably bricked or hardware problem

Hello all .
I've been lurking around for sometime and here I am asking for help . Here fow the story goes . A friend of mine had his nexus s stock/no root and to the last update given OTA in Greece I suppose 4.0.4 . Once , he woke up and the phone stuck on the google logo .The broken screen has nothing to do beacuse it worled like that for several months .
If battery is taken off and put in again it will start with the on/off button and will stuck on the logo . Then it won't shut down with the on off button and will stay on untill it runs out of juice . No side or touch buttons do anything . I have a rooted slimkat i9023 so he sent it to me . First thing tried to do was get to fastboot .No luck . It will go on and stick to the logo . The side buttons seem tight although I can't be sure if a contact inside broke . In a desperate attempt to fic that I ordered a usb jig I saw on youtube which I thought could get the phone running and with Odin I would try to reinstall a stock ROM . As I read in another thread ODIN is proprietary for samsung and fastboot is more or less the same google application . I tried the jig to my nexus to see what happens and the phone got to download mode . I started the bricked one with the jig and got that image yu see on the left asking about the bootloader . I can't go any further beacause there is nothing to select no buttons work and do anything . It sticks there . I thought it could be in download mode already so I connected to ODIN . Upon connection the :0 COM:4 lights up meaning I suppose there is some communication . Thought I should try it . Found a guide about odin , followed the steps and got a stock ICS rom for i9023 ] the 4.1.2 (JZO54K) . When I unzip the downloaded file it has no tar or mda files . It contains another zip called "image-soju-jzo54k" and some other files (flash.all radio e.t,c) .Nothing like what the guide (tar& MD5) suggests . I tried at that state , with the phone showing the lock to run fastboot devices and , of course , nothing turns out . As if no phone is connected . Can Odin be used or do I forget about .Can the phone be saved or has it met his master ? Anything else I can try .Thank you in advance .

Seems like what you downloaded is a factory image. This image can only be used in fastboot mode.
If you can go to fastboot mode and get the phone recognized then there are lots of guides to use that file.
OR
If you want to try Download mode then here is a guide that you can try: http://sexynexus.blogspot.in/2012/06/flashing-with-odin-i9023-and-i9020t.html

Thanks . I'll try it as soon as possible . Fastboot is out of the question , the buttons don't respond . I'll try download mode . Could you plain explain what "volume+ and volume-" means ? Switch off normaly , start and press both volume buttons ? What is the exact procedure ?

Power down your Nexus S and put it into “Download Mode” by holding Volume Up and Volume Down, and then clicking the Power button.
And then follow the steps in the link. Also, tell me what happens if you try this guide: http://www.droidviews.com/nexus-s-guide-flash-android-4-1-2-jzo54k-factory-image/
Try any of them first and then tell me.

It's ' me again . I tried getting the phone to download mode with no luck . But if in general the S can get to download mode just with buttons it's weird I can't find a single video in youtube . The only video I came up with is "Nexus S: Come entrare in download mode con USB Jig" but he uses a jig . Maybe that works with the galaxy series . I also tried holding vol buttons down and starting my nexus , but it will boot normally . Either way I gave odin a go using the jig , nicely downloaded and extracted all necessary files . COM4 turns yellow upon usb connection . Hit start .

New thing is that in "Unlock Bootloader" image you see as an attachment in the first post ,showing on the corrupted phone , now I see with red letters over the two usb lines " KA3...New eMMC Support Fail
As for the other guide "Nexus s Guide" you proposed , as I said in the first place , the phone will not get to fastboot . If it did I would have flashed a stock rom and mail it back . Starting with vol Up only leads to the google logo for eternity . Found some other posts regarding KA3 failure and it's probably hardware failure . By the way I found someone else experiecing the same problem , or at least similar .Just google "ka3 new emmc support fail" and you will find a post in GSM Arena .I would post the link but the system won't let me in the end . Anyway your help is much appreciated and unless someone else has something else to suggest I think it's time to let the phone go and grab its battery .

[Completed] Samsung Galaxy SM-J100H - Can I fix this?

Hello,
My friend gave me a Samsung Galaxy SM-J100H because it wouldn't go past the Samsung Logo so I tried to root it. I used Odin and everything seemed to be going well until it restarted. When it restarted it said there was a problem with the USB connection. A window appeared with 3 different device drivers and the first two checked with a green tick and the 3rd the Samsung one gave me a red cross. I quickly tried to reinstall the USB driver but to no avail.
Now, I can't get into the Power+Home+Volume Up menu, all I can get is the Power+Home+Volume Down to work which brings up Press Volume Up to Continue. When I do that, even without the USB plugged in it just says Downloading.... Do not turn off target!! I left this overnight in case it somehow cached the root but to no avail.
Have I bricked it totally? Is there any way I can recover this? Is there a program that will wipe everything completely so I can start from Scratch? I refuse to believe that I can't solve a software issue with software. Is there something in the hardware I can do that would wipe everything like using a Jumper to clear the CMOS and BIOS for a PC, is there anything like that I could do? I know there would be any jumpers but maybe connecting certain connections it could effectively wipe it?
Even when I try to start again with Odin I can't since it will just go straight to Downloading.... Do not turn off target!! as soon as I press Volume Up.
Is there ANYTHING I can do?
Hi there and welcome to assist,
If you can enter in download mode using combo Power+Home+Volume Down then you can flash stock firmware. Search with google for this firmware and flash thru Odin.
Flashing instructions:
 Extract (unzip) the firmware file
 Download Odin v3.11.1
 Extract Odin ZIP file
 Open Odin v3.11.1
 Reboot Phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
 Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
 Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
 Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
 Click the start button, sit back and wait few minutes

Good luck

I think i broke my phone completely.

It all started with me flashing a new rom. Okay, i was vaguely knowing what i was doing and it went without any problems. After that i noticed it had come with magisk, so I checked out magisk as i had never used it before. Got myself the uninstall zip in case anything went sideways and installed a module, then rebooted. Bad idea. The module apparently wasn't compatible with my device or my installation or whatever , making my phone get stuck while booting (at the SAMSUNG symbol). Okay, that's really bad, but i do know that you can get into download mode from here, so that's what i did. And no, i can't boot into recovery mode. Tried to get there every step of the way and it just doesn't want to work. Even
Code:
adb reboot recovery
doesn't want to work, which is quite depressing.
Eventually got hold of a stock .tar.md5, tried to flash it, bam.
Code:

So odin doesn't work. Now my question is, is my phone completely broken? Am i able to do anything to it? Am i able to somehow boot into recovery mode to fix this ungodly mess?
Don't try with old firmware. Download latest...

Hi,
I have the same issue last week!
Your phone it's just FINE ! You only mess up "the original recovery and must be redone properly"!
For a fresh & clean install, you need (I recommend you to use the files from the LINKs provided):
- the latest TRWP Recovery - LINK
- the latest firmware (Nougat) - LINK and "hidden file" - LINK
- or a custom ROM for your S6 version - LINK.
To resolve, do the following:
1. Open Odin and uncheck "Auto Reboot";
2. Enter in Downloading Mode (home + vol DW + power button) on your S6 and connect to PC;
3. Flash in AP Odin the latest TRWP Recovery (don't close the Odin program);
4. Press "Reset" on Odin, disconnect the phone from your PC and enter again in Downloading Mode (home + vol DW + power button) and reconnect to PC;
5. Check "Auto Reboot" on Odin and flash again the TRWP Recovery in AP Odin (the phone will reboot);
6. When the phone reboot, by pressing continuously "home + vol UP + power button", enter in Recovery Mode;
7. In TRWP you must wipe everything (Dalvik, System, Data, Cache etc) including "Format Data" <<< it's mandatory;
8. Restart the phone and enter again in Recovery Mode by pressing continuously "home + vol UP + power button" and wipe again Dalvik, System, Data, Cache etc and "Format Data" - just to be sure ;
9. Download a custom ROM, copy to your phone and install it normally in TRWP.
After you done the first 8 steps and if you want to flash the latest original firmware (Nougat), do the following:
10. Donwload the original firmware and rename it in "xxxxxxx_xxxxxxxx_xxxxxxx_HOME.tar" (i mean, delete ".md5" from the end of the name);
11. Extract "hidden.img" file from original firmware and copy to your PC and rename it in "hidden.img.tar";
12. Enter in Downloading Mode (home + vol DW + power button) and on Odin, uncheck "Auto Reboot";
13. Flash the original firmware in AP Odin;
14. Don't close the Odin program but now check "Auto Reboot" on Odin;
15. Press "Reset" on Odin, disconnect the phone from your PC and enter again in Downloading Mode (home + vol DW + power button) and reconnect to PC (on Odin "Auto Reboot" must be checked);
6. Flash "hidden.img.tar" in AP Odin;
7. The phone reboot automatically and you will have the original firmware.

Still doesn't want to boot into recovery. It's just stuck at boot and the only thing i can actually boot into is the download mode. As for the original firmware, I've tried that but apparently I got hold of the wrong version or something. Currently downloading what I assume is the right one from rapidgator at a whopping 50~KBps, so that'll take another 4 hours. Thanks for trying to help though, I appreciate it.
EDIT: Leaving it on overnight drained the battery. I'm now trying to cheese my way into recovery mode by just holding down volume UP + home + power when it's drained but apparently it's too drained and doesn't start at all. Maybe i can get it to the point where it'll automatically turn off but I still have a % of battery life left?

Samsung SmartSwitch tells me my device is unsupported. It also doesn't appear in the "List of devices requiring emergency recovery" in either piece of software.

Open Kies, go to Tools/Firmware Upgrade and Initialisation
Enter your Model name in following format "SM-G920x"
Then enter your Serial Number (you can find it on the back of your phone)
Confirm everything that pops up.

There's probably no way I'm going to get the serial number seeing as i can't just open the back of the phone and i don't know where the box is that it came in.

It should be written at the bottom of the back cover, not behind it. (At least that's the case with EU models)
If that's not the case with your phone and you don't have the original box then you can try this:
Hold the power, home, and volume down buttons until the warning screen appears. Then press the home button.

It was suppose to give you your S/N. But i guess that doesn't work on your device.
You must find your S/N somehow, i don't think there is other way to restore your phone.

Doesn't seem to work, pressing home just puts me into download mode and I believe I remember throwing the box away like a moron. There's nothing on/under the glass on the back either. I guess i'll have to try out the other stock firmware images i'm still downloading.

If you gonna flash Nougat, just dont flash XEF and go for CYV
CYV got newest Changelist than XEF, that has many bugs!

Men, mine too! My 920F was in the same situation!
If you follow the steps i wrote, it work! None of this program will repair your phone "SmartSwitch", "Kies" etc.
Believe me, i tried all possibilities ! You must repair your recovery. Otherwise, nothing you can do!
Flash provided TWRP Recovery in AP on ODIN (first, with uncheck Auto Reboot and second with Auto Reboot check) and when your phone reboot, still press on home + vol UP + power button and enter in recovery. After that, wipe everything + FORMAT DATA and will be OK!
Okay, I'm pretty sure it's working now. It booted into TWRP, I made it install my custom ROM. Basically, it's working. To detail the steps in between...:
I downloaded stock firmware from a different site. No I'm not going to tell you the site, but it's pretty high in the google search results. Practically unavoidable.
I finally installed that after an ~8-9 hour download from rapidgator (Look, i know some of you out there are trying to make money by uploading content to these sites, but 8 hours is just ridiculous).
It failed at hidden.img.tar.
I installed the hidden.img.tar by first opening the firmware as an archive, then extracting hidden.img, then renaming it to hidden.img.tar as dinamo1975 described.
It eventually booted properly, then somehow it turned into a boot loop.
I went into download mode again and flashed TWRP from https://twrp.me/.
I made it boot into TWRP and installed a custom ROM.
Now the phone boots without problems and is back up and running.
Three things I've learned from this:
- ALWAYS have stock firmware ready. Stock firmware that matches your device. Google is your best friend here.
- Certain magisk modules can get your device stuck depending on your build. Be CAREFUL. If you're not sure if something is going to work, don't attempt to make it work.
- That last part goes for everything with electronics. If you're unsure if something is going to work, just stop right there, please.
EDIT: Is there any way to close this thread?
EDITEDIT: Nope this is bad. Stuck in a boot loop (boots up right to the OS up to where i have to provide my SIM pin, then restarts immediately) and it doesn't recognize my battery. Seen as 0% and TWRP doesn't even show a percentage. Could it be that I've gotten the wrong firmware yet again?
