Battery goes dead while plugged in.

I recently bought a hdmi cord and downloaded netflix to my phone. While the phone is plugged into wall my phone goes dead while watching netflix with hdmi being used. does the hdmi take more power then phone takes in or what. Someone please help out because this sucks. Im running 1.5 gummy gb.

Yes you are correct. It also drains more than charging when you use the Mobile Hotspot.
Were you on 4G or WiFi?

I had the same problem in my car streaming bluetooth audio. I got a better charger and it wasn't as bad.

It's all about the charger. Ever notice how the low battery warning says to stop using it or it will charge inefficiently? A normal computer USB port puts out 500 milliamps, a Droid X charger puts out 850, and the Charge charger does 1 amp. Basically, the higher the charger amperage, the faster the charge. The Charge charger might not be able to meet the demands of the device while it's under heavy use, which is why I use my Galaxy Tab charger (2A). It works perfectly.
EDIT: tl;dr the ROM does not matter for charging, it's all about the hardware. Use a higher amp charger.

I feel like there's something weird going on with me. Using mobile hotspot seems to drain less energy than charging for me with the stock charger, except there's an issue if I let it charge up to 100% while using mobile hotspot. If I let this happen, it seems to stop charging and tricks the battery into thinking that it's still at 100% when it's in fact draining. If I unplug it after some time (when it still think it's at 100%) I'll see the actual battery life percentage as if it stopped charging when it reached 100%.
My temporary solution to this is to unplug when I get to 100% and plug it back in when my battery is low and it'll eventually reach 100% again then repeat (all while mobile hotspot is active). Of course this is not an ideal solution... I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with the full battery notification/popup because ever since I switched to the Gingerbread leak I haven't been able to disable that. I think if I use a ROM with it already disabled, I can leave my phone plugged in and mobile hotspot won't ever drain to empty. Not sure if I have tested this thoroughly enough though.

I use a 1A charger, but the phone only charges around 250mAh. The phone purposely charges at a lower rate. This has been discussed many times. The software is a deciding factor too.

Same thing happens to me. I have 1A and higher chargers, but because the phone doesn't recognize it, it refuses to charge at the higher rate.

It is a software limitation. I had the original incredible for a while, one of the big deals with it was charging it in the car while using GPS.
One update they turned on slow charging, but then devices were dieing as they were being charged, so they pushed another update out to reverse it so they would receive a faster charge.
So you are limited by the hardware and what it can handle, as well as the software and how its programmed to handle it...

If its software maybe the devs can adjust this in their roms

Odd...my Gtab charger works fine (don't know the input amperage, but it's rated at 2A). Maybe my ROM/kernel, or just a Samsung thing?

Battery Charge Rate

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good app to measure how fast your battery is charging while connected to an outlet.
I just got a Duracell usb car charger that says it outputs 2.1 amps, but when I check in settings>about phone>status while charging my phone it says it's charging as USB (slow) rather than AC (fast), so need an app that can show me the rate at which my phone is charging.
Any suggestions?

I don't really know of an app.. But I do believe its the phone that regulates the amount of current to the battery not the charger.

Yeah I know that the phone will only take in what it can, so I wasn't expecting it to charge at the full 2.1 amps or anything but it's bugging me that it says it's only charging as USB.
I just want to make sure it's not charging slower than my other charger (1 amp) that DOES charge as 'AC'.

Gotcha, I use a compact power inverter in my vehicle it has a USB port and a 110 socket. Says AC if charging in either port..

[Q] Portable hotspot kills battery

OK the title probably leaves you thinking "no sh*t, Sherlock!" Hear me out... I plug the phone into the AC adapter and then plug it into a wall outlet. After that I switch on the portable hotspot.
I'm OK for hours but eventually the charge in the battery dies. Seeing as the phone has been plugged into the wall the entire time I am left wondering what foul, black magic could be responsible for this anomaly. The fact that the battery goes dead even though it's plugged into a wall outlet baffles me. Is this normal? Could it be that the battery is dying faster than it can charge?

Normal? It depends on how much you're using as far as bandwidth. If you're downloading an 8Gb file over some hours, that will eat your battery even if you're plugged in.

Have you tried setcpu profiles to underclock when screen is off? Im able to get a couple hours of tethering unplugged.

Normal, unless the AC adapter isn't supplying enough Amps/Volts. I know using a Samsung adaptor from my Vibrant doesn't supply enough, and discharges if I use it while plugged in.

You're not getting enough amps into your phone. Get at least a 1 amp charger.

If your devices / ROM supports it Bluetooth Tethering uses less power then Wifi, but is is a little slower.

Do I need a special charger?

Any micro usb charger is fine including the wall charger that came with the phone.

but all cables are not equal. I lose 1% every ten minutes at dimmest brightness using google maps through gps and playing music while in my car charger.
This is with a generic usb to micro cable from the dollar store. OEM htc/smasung cables yield positive charge in the same ten minute span with the same charger and apps running.

This is with an extended battery using a usb to micro car charger that u lose 1% every ten min?

Your stock charger will be fine. If you are using any other charger or car charger make sure it is rated at 1A. Otherwise you will see very slow charging and/or the inability for your phone to keep up with discharge while using apps that discharge the battery quickly. (ie maps or navigation)

regular charger should be fine

Charger brick

If I'm not mistaken the brick says 1.5 outout and my htc one charger had 1. Is it gonna charge faster or something? This could be a dumb question.

is there any downside to using a charger that outputs more than 1.5a?

no downside to too many, just too few. more amperage, higher possible current (at the same voltage)

No, it will just be less current. In some cases this may mean the phone won't charge at all (for example, a low current power adapter while you are using a hotspot would most likely still drain your battery slowly). Low current won't cause damage but your phone may take longer to be able to turn on when it fully depletes and has to recharge.
Real world example: my phone ran out of battery while I was in my car and I tried to use a cigarette port charger and then immediately power it back on as I had done numerous times at home with the A/C adapter. Unfortunately the car adapter was lower current so it took about 10 minutes for my phone to charge back to a point where it would power on. During this time I was blindly driving around haha.
