Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good app to measure how fast your battery is charging while connected to an outlet.
I just got a Duracell usb car charger that says it outputs 2.1 amps, but when I check in settings>about phone>status while charging my phone it says it's charging as USB (slow) rather than AC (fast), so need an app that can show me the rate at which my phone is charging.
Any suggestions?

I don't really know of an app.. But I do believe its the phone that regulates the amount of current to the battery not the charger.

Yeah I know that the phone will only take in what it can, so I wasn't expecting it to charge at the full 2.1 amps or anything but it's bugging me that it says it's only charging as USB.
I just want to make sure it's not charging slower than my other charger (1 amp) that DOES charge as 'AC'.

Gotcha, I use a compact power inverter in my vehicle it has a USB port and a 110 socket. Says AC if charging in either port..

I just find it stupid that the phone would show a notification for USB connection when I connect it to a charger.
Yes, it can tell the difference. Check in OS monitor, it knows whether you are getting power from USB, or from AC.
My phone thinks my car is a computer. As far as I know, it goes by the current being received -- 500 mA from a computer, 700 mA from the stock wall charger.

I don't think it depends on the current.
With my factory charger, if I insert the charger in and kinda pull out one side of it, it will think it's a computer and I can "mount" my sd card. so it might be a certain way the connectors touch inside

It depends on the charger, but yes, the phone for the most part can tell the difference. It has to do with the voltage that is put out.

It has nothing to do with amperage (unless it is under 500) and everything to so with charging source. Wall chargers basically short the data wires to indicate AC charger and car chargers do not.
There is a thread in accessories forum discussing this and mods to get full charging out of car chargers. I did it by modding an extra cable. My car charger puts out 1 amp but the phone never draws more then ~ 750 mah.

Every time I read one of your posts, in my head is McGyver's voice. Hearing him narrate the xda forums is hilarious.

The phone can take up to 1000mA of charging current. But only if it detects it is on one of its supported AC chargers. Draw more than 500mA on a PC USB port may damage it. So, there is special wiring needs to be done for the data PINs on the USB port. That's why for generic car charger and wall chargers, it can't only assume it is PC USB port and charges at a slower pace (500mA). You will need the Samsung AC or Car charger to charge at higher current. I managed to mod one of car charger to be recognized as AC charger (no USB prompt). And you really need it because if you're using the phone as GPS navigation device, 500mA won't be able to sustain it (battery will keep be drained). You need 700ma or more.
It also depends if you have your USB connection set to a default if you will get that pop up when you connect it to any other than an AC charger.

Yes it does and is sensitive. I have been using a BT headphone charger and I would be perplexed that my phone showed 100% but pull the plug and its at 87% every morning AFTER recalibrating the battery.. LOL
Decided to use the Samsung Charger and no such issues. Needs those extra Milliamps.....

I do the battery calibration from the other thread about once a week. For everyday charging I just charge when low. So far my battery last pretty long.some days longer then others.

Just the usual. Plug it into the standard micro USB the phone came with. Calibrate every time I update my ROM(since Humble comes with a battery calibrate app, makes it very easy).
at home i use the USB charger that came with the Charge. at work i use a micro usb charger that came with a palm pixi or a bluetooth headset that used micro usb to charge. I tried using a microusb cable plugged into my work computer, but that triggers the usb storage mode, which stops my podcast player. I've also noticed some universal usb chargers trigger the USB storage mode.
In the car I have the Charge car dock. I use a mini usb charger for a garmin gps with a mini to micro usb adapter with it. If I plug that directly into the Charge, it triggers the Desktop dock mode, rather than car dock mode.

Bahaha. Here, I use my Galaxy Tab charger. Goes a lot faster because of the higher amperage, plus I don't need to charge my Tab very often.

After using a wall adapter to micro USB port charger that only supplies 0.7 A instead of the 1 A the stock charger does, the lower adapter got very hot. Does the phone still try to draw one amp if its not connected to a PC through usb? Considering the standardization of micro-usb it would seem like G2x owners will try to use chargers at friends houses for other phones and it may not be the safest thing. Any input?

Phone can only draw as much power as the charger supplies, up to something like 1 amp. If the charger supplies less than that, then it only draws what the charger supplies. If the charger supplies more than 1 amp, then it will still only draw the 1 amp that it needs. The more important thing to ensure is that the voltage of that charger is the same as the stock charger.

It's strange we got different chargers. This one outputs 4.8V at 1.0A. It also squeals when the phone is in standby. If i wake it it stops humming. Model STA-U13WR2. I wonder if charge rate has to do with anything bad? When the charge says completed and it is plugged into a USB port, it will charge for another hour at times. Makes sense since a high charging rate will cause the battery voltage to spike and read as if the charge is complete when it's still got room.

and then I found this (link above) with 2.1A
is it matter charging via 2.1A and not 2A? what is the different? it will charge faster/slower?

In Stock kernel there is current limit 1.9A. So everything above it, will be the same as 1.9A.
In reality, you will find that even 2.1A charger doesn't supply even 1.9A. Chinese charges definitely don't supply current thay claim. And beware of them - you may fry your device by such cheap charger.
Also, it heavily depends on USB cable as well. It has to be very short and very thick.
I have a Mediabridge car adapter that has a 2.1 amp charger on it. When I charge my S4 with it it barely charges faster than the 1 amp charger does. I think it charges at either 1.3 or 1.7 amps, sorry can't remember exactly.

I don't have the equipment to measure it exactly. So what I did was charge my phone from 50% for 40 minutes on my stock Samsung wall charger and then recorder the percentage it increased. I then took that number and assumed it was charging at 2 amps and used it as a baseline. Then I did the same test with my car adapter and recorded the results. The I figured out the percentage difference and came up with me estimates. I just don't have the data in front of me anymore but I remembered it being somewhere between 1.3 or 1.7.

Chargers, power supplies, etc, don't "decide" the amps that go to a device - the device "draws" a certain amount. Just because a lamp is plugged into a 20amp circuit in your home doesn't mean 20 amps are going to be shoved through the bulb.
So if, as sorg says, the phone is only going to "ask" for 1.9a, you could plug it into a 5 amp charger and it would make no difference.

No, your phone will NEVER charge faster than 1900 until a developer comes along and figures out how to hack the system to allow this. And it would be a potentiallly STUPID idea to charge faster than Samsung has deemed safe.

Using chargers with a high power (A) is no problem, the phone will not "take" more than it needs.

I charge mine with my xz charger 1.5a no problem
The charging block that comes with the Nexus 5 is 5.0 volt, 1.2 amp.

While AFAIK there's no 1.5A ICs, than its 99% safe to say they using 2A nominal IC.

From what I understand, you could use a 10A charger and still be fine. The handset will not take any more than it needs. Basically, the charger doesn't push current, the phone pulls it.

Thats correct and nothing else. No way to destroy a phone with too much A because it just takes as much it needs. The 2A on an charger is just the maximum power output. It is physical impossible to PUSH the ampere in the device.
