I just find it stupid that the phone would show a notification for USB connection when I connect it to a charger.
Yes, it can tell the difference. Check in OS monitor, it knows whether you are getting power from USB, or from AC.
My phone thinks my car is a computer. As far as I know, it goes by the current being received -- 500 mA from a computer, 700 mA from the stock wall charger.

I don't think it depends on the current.
With my factory charger, if I insert the charger in and kinda pull out one side of it, it will think it's a computer and I can "mount" my sd card. so it might be a certain way the connectors touch inside

It depends on the charger, but yes, the phone for the most part can tell the difference. It has to do with the voltage that is put out.

It has nothing to do with amperage (unless it is under 500) and everything to so with charging source. Wall chargers basically short the data wires to indicate AC charger and car chargers do not.
There is a thread in accessories forum discussing this and mods to get full charging out of car chargers. I did it by modding an extra cable. My car charger puts out 1 amp but the phone never draws more then ~ 750 mah.

Every time I read one of your posts, in my head is McGyver's voice. Hearing him narrate the xda forums is hilarious.

The phone can take up to 1000mA of charging current. But only if it detects it is on one of its supported AC chargers. Draw more than 500mA on a PC USB port may damage it. So, there is special wiring needs to be done for the data PINs on the USB port. That's why for generic car charger and wall chargers, it can't only assume it is PC USB port and charges at a slower pace (500mA). You will need the Samsung AC or Car charger to charge at higher current. I managed to mod one of car charger to be recognized as AC charger (no USB prompt). And you really need it because if you're using the phone as GPS navigation device, 500mA won't be able to sustain it (battery will keep be drained). You need 700ma or more.
It also depends if you have your USB connection set to a default if you will get that pop up when you connect it to any other than an AC charger.

Yes it does and is sensitive. I have been using a BT headphone charger and I would be perplexed that my phone showed 100% but pull the plug and its at 87% every morning AFTER recalibrating the battery.. LOL
Decided to use the Samsung Charger and no such issues. Needs those extra Milliamps.....
Hi,
Today I was using GPS app - HTC Locations. In about 45 minutes battery went down from 100% to 50% (I noticed that using satellite GPS makes the phone very hot) and I decided to connect a charger that I have bought recently - HTC CC-C200 car charger.
The problem was... the battery was still being discharged!
I turned off the nav app and left only basic system apps and the phone was charging only about 5 percent in 30 minutes. Keeping in mind how fast the phone was discharging using navigation, it is simple that the car charger won't do.
Anybody else has this problem? How can I actually use a navigation??

One question - can an USB extension cord (plug in to this original HTC's charger and then original HTC USB cable to this cord) decrease the speed of charging?

Are u sure that the 110V network adapter, charge the phone with 110 volts ?
The 110V charger:
HTC New Slim Design AC Adapter TC E250 (with EU Plug Unit + micro USB Cable, 5V/1A
and the car charger:
HTC Generic Car Charger with USB/micUSB Cable CC C200 (1A/5V)
have SAME charge power: 1A at 5Vm that is 5W.
The PC USB ports are rated at 500mA, but if u check the port with digital multimeter (cut the cable and put Ampere-meter) u can see that u can drain ~700-800mA , Asus and SuperMicro Motherboard tested from me
@EniHS if u make the lenght of the cable bigger the electrical resistance grow too . I think that 1 meter more wont be such a problem, but if u really wanna check how this will change the power of charge u need to measure it with Ampere-meter
This is an easy one... I try to never get the charger from the store because it (usually) won't put out enough juice to keep up.
I found that if use the same current for charging my ipad, it works much better and can keep up. With that in mind, you can purchase any charger with a 2 Amp output (10 watts) that has a generic USB connector. Try the search "10 watt usb car charger" on Google or Amazon.
Get the free app "juice plotter," which will plot your battery usage and charge. If you're plugged in and the plot is still going down, then the drain is still greater than the charge, and you'll need a better charger. Good luck!

That would be a solution. I'll buy 2A 5V charger. I assume that I should only replace the plug and the USB cable can be left from original HTC car charger?
Isn't it dangerous for the phone to charge by 2A instead of 1A (original charger)? Or the only difference is the charging speed?
Solved!
I did some tests today and discovered that if I charge the phone normally (no program running, GPS off) with HTC car charger WITH extension USB cable... phone was charging 1% in 25 minutes!!! That would be over 40 hours to charge the device from zero to full! I thought I had charger broken, but... I tried with NO EXTENSION CABLE, just the HTC plug and HTC cable, then the phone was charging normally 1% in 2 minutes!
So... the problem are extension cables, but still don't know why...
I noticed this even with wall chargers. Yesterday when I bought my phone, I plugged it in to my old charger & noticed it was charging slow. Once I switched to the charger that came with my Sensation, it charges normally now. I haven't looked at the chargers to compare if something is different but it is very strange
Isn't strange at all, it's essentially that they are not being supplied a great enough charge and so power from the battery is utilised in addition. ideally you want above 700mAh for standard charging/use.
When I bought the Infuse Wednesday, I was excited to discover that the charging port is the same as my Bluetooth headset (Plantronics Voyager Pro) but while using the phone at work with the charger plugged in for the last 4 hours, I noticed my battery is around 20%. So my question is, do chargers and data cables made for other products not work with the Infuse? And if so, WHY!?

i can't tell you offhand exactly why but its definitely true. My wifes samsung focus (wp7) charger actually doesnt charge my phone faster than it dies unless I am doing absolutely nothing on it. My phone actually died watching a movie through the hdmi out using her charger. And of course it died with 6 minutes to go. If I find any more info as to the "why" part I will be sure to post. But I wanted to let you know the charger definitely makes a difference
ok so I found a better answer: even though they all use the same voltage. Those 5v chargers have 1 main difference. Different Amperage. Some chargers output only .5A, while others put out 1A. These differences will in turn make the difference between how fast or well it charges your device. This is info I gathered so take it with a grain of salt. If anyone has a better answer or can elaborate feel free to do so!!
Ok, this does make sense. The charger I've been using all night is 5V 180mA... Not all that powerful. Just didn't think it would leave me at 5% 8 hours into my night shift...

Plantronics headset chargers are rated, at MOST, 300 mA. (That's what the one that came with my 975 is rated.)
Our phones need at LEAST 500 mA. The wall charger is rated 700 mA, if you want to run navigation in a car dock it looks like you need at least 1000 mA.
Also, our chargers signal that a "dumb charger" is present by shorting D+ and D- together. I'm not sure what our phones will do with chargers that don't do this (at the moment I'm assuming the phone goes into USB charging mode instead of AC.) In the case of the car dock, what the charger does is irrelevant, as the dock signals its presence in another way and does not pass through D- and D+ from the charger. (D+ and D- go to the audio line out of the dock.)
Also, our phone (and likely many others) assume that they can get whatever current is needed from the charger, so if the charger "droops", it doesn't seem to do anything other than act weird (in most cases, drain the battery).
And another problem I found.. When I first got my Infuse, I was thrilled to see that it used the same type of cable that several other devices I have used. MicroUSB...
So I tried charging with the cable & charger from my Kindle. No go.
It will charge with the Kindle charger, just not the Kindle USB cable. Which makes the 4 extra kindle cables I have useless..
If I had time and inclination, I'd set about to figure out what the difference is between the two cables.
One of the reasons I returned my Atrix and bought an Infuse was because None of my MICRO-USB chargers worked with the Atrix. So far they have all worked with my Infuse.

One thing I learned working at multiple cell phone places: Motorola phones are PICKY when it comes to chargers. Sprint basically has an ongoing memo to every tech, moto phones are ONLY to be used with moto chargers. It makes no real sense, but it's true.
I've also noticed that my iGo charger takes a good bit less time for a full charge than what came with the phone. Also, not using the adapter and plugging the phone directly into a computer via USB, also makes charging faster. I this k the problem is the USB adapter that Samsung tossed in. Just my .02!

One thing - phones vary widely in how they determine that a "dumb charger" is connected.
Samsungs look for D- and D+ shorted to each other. A lot of generic chargers (like the $1.25 Monoprice car chargers) do this.
Apple devices look for weird resistor combinations from D- and D+ to +5 and ground. See http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/icharge.html
Mini-USB motos used weird combos of resistors to D- and D+ along with resistors between a normally unconnected pin and GND. MicroUSB defines this extra pin as "ID". Our phone uses resistors between ID and GND to determine if "other" devices are connected, such as the Jig, Car Dock, Home Dock, etc. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275 for more details.
The MicroUSB cable that came from our phones is pretty thin-gauge wire. I have a cable from Monoprice that should work MUCH better at high currents, and HAS worked better at high currents with the car dock and an iPad charger. (Without the car dock, it gets seen as a USB charger due to the funky iCharging resistors mentioned above. The car dock works because it doesn't pass USB D+ and D- from the charger to the phone.)
WARNING: I reference the Monoprice cheapo chargers above. They claim they are a 1A charger but they are NOT. They have a resistor that sets peak switch current of the regulator to 600 mA, and output current is going to be less than this.
Can we use fast charger on our HoX?
Our original charger is darn too slow to charge fully our Hox so anybody tried using other charger like the charger for iphone or Nook or Smasung? Cause my nook tab
charge much faster than my Hox which also has bigger battery and my iphone also charge much quicker. Would doing such thing destroy our battery or degrade for that matter? Anyone experimented on that?
The HOX charger is 1A which is what the phone will accept. The iphone charger is also 1A.
I havnt even opened my HOX charger or cable. Just using generic 1A charger from another phone.
I've been using my Kindle charger without any problems, though I don't know what the output is.

I have a Nook Charger here which is 1.9A and Im afraid to use it because

The answer is it depends. Here's the options:
NC, NC cable, NC charger - Life's good, 1.8A charging rate
NC, NC cable, other charger - Depends on the profile and circuitry of the charger, could be 500mA, 1.5A, or 1.8A.
NC, other cable, NC charger - You'd better use a heavier gauge wire, because even though you're not using the NC cable, USB spec says that the device may request up to 1.8A if available. NC will decide what it wants here.
NC, other cable, other charger - You'll get 500mA, 1.5A, or 1.8A, depending on the charger. Again, be careful of amperage on the cable
other device, NC cable, NC charger - *should* work, but I don't recommend it. I think ground carries a high voltage for some reason, since I've seen my USB hubs resetting and sparks coming from the connector at times
other device, NC cable, other charger - this really should work, but you're not going to get faster charge times, since again it depends on the output of the charger. I'd still be cautious since the NC cable has something wierd going on.
other device, other cable, NC charger - Go for it. I've gotten 1 hr full charge times on my phone with this method. You MUST use a heavy enough gauge USB cable.
other device, other cable, other charger - depends on device draw and charger profile mode
Yes. When I'm in a hurry I use my hp touchpad charger. It charges my phone an hour faster than the HTC one from under 10% to full.

Yup, the car charger still charges my old HTC, even with the Samsung cable... so there's definitely something different inside the charger...

I have a 500mA car charger and it didn't work. Even though it worked on my Xperia Z. I bought a 2A charger from Maplin and it works just fine.

Hmmm will have to look into getting a decent 2A charger then and NOT modifying it...
So I opened up my car charger and un-modded it back to original and it works like a charm now
I've got a 1A Belkin car charger and it seems to overload after a while when charging my gs4.
The green light on it blinks and my phone makes that sound when you plug in the charger.
Takes a while for it to happen but gets more frequent the longer you have it plugged in.
The charger works fine with my gf's nexus 4.

I'm using the Motorola charger (big blue circle). Got it for my Razr Maxx a year or so ago (I've gone through like 4 phones since then) and it works wonderfully. It's the best micro-USB car charger I've ever seen. Coiled cord, huge blue light (but not too bright since it's an ambient-style light), and charges quickly.

I have tired a few most only charged at 400-500 m-amps (aka running with gps and screen on discharged it faster then it was charging) with some random picks at fry's i found one that was marked 3 amp charger that whould do 780 m-amps so the phone still makes head way chargeing while being used as GPS
FYI the tool i use to measure says the Samsung charger is 1900 M-amps and my apple ipad charging brink is 1400 just for reference.
tool is Galaxy Charging Current Lite i would link it but the forum will not let me

You can also use elixir 2, the battery stats will give amps while discharging and change when charging. I think it uses the current_now as reference.
I have a 2a usb car charger and I just use the usb cable from the phone. I bought the car charger from best buy.

Different USB cables do pass different current even if using the same charging main. From tests I've done so far, a generic 3 ft USB 2.0 cable I randomly purchased online only allowed around 400 mA. An old Blackberry Torch 9810 cable allowed around 1200 mA. Original cable that came with the S4 allows 1900 mA. These numbers are from using the original wall charger main that came with phone.

I bought an anker car charger and mediabridge charging usb cable and it's a great combo. The images of the anker car charger is different, should be dual usb ports.

I don't know the exact current I'm getting, but from the battery monitor widget app, I'm seeing at least 1amp or higher of positive current.
