Stuck on boot screen - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi. im new the the forums.
i have a nexus s 4g for sprint. its brand new. when i turn the phone on, it wont go past the "X" boot screen. if it does, it goes to the home screen then goes back to the "X" screen. i dont know how to fix this problem. its getting frustrating.
thanks for the help

try a full wipe

Yeah try a full wipe.
If you're stock (Not modded) then just turn the phone off, hold the volume up and power until you get to a screen with an android on it, then scroll down with the volume keys until "Recovery" is highlighted, then press the power button. Then you'll get to a screen with an exclamation mark and then you press volume up and power at the same time and then you'll see a menu, after that scroll down to "Wipe data" and press the power button. That should wipe your phone.
Good Luck!

Captivate will not hard reset.

I have tried hard resetting my phone, but I cant' get it to work. With the phone off, I hold the "volume down" key and press the power button. If i press the power and release quickly, nothing happens. If I hold it long enough for anything to happen, the phone just starts up normally. What am I doing wrong?
Also, If i reset the phone from the privacy menu, does it do the same thing as the above method?
no idea on the second question but try holding the volume up and down at the same time and then pressing the power button until it starts to boot. Continue holding down volume up and down and release the power button once it starts booting. Let us know if this did it for you.
I think you need to hold the volume control button (both Up & Down together) and the Power button until the Reboot screen appears.
Yea but none of the options will reset my phone...
My son was playing with the pattern lock and locked my phone, recovery using gmail username/pass don't work, so I need to hard reset it...
I've done the "delete all user data" and "delete cache data"
But it hasn't removed the lock... and I see my wallpaper is still the same...
Any other ideas... I am stuck with a $200 paper weight right now!!
Update: Fantastic!! Called Samsung, they said it's a bug and I need to send it in to be reflashed... hell no, back to the AT&T store I go... EXTREMELY dissapointed in AT&T / SAMSUNG.... It appears the standard Vibrant S can reset to factory settings!
Thanks,
Rich

Why can't I 'cold boot'?

Unplugged, I turn the power off, then I hold down the volume button, then the power button, a couple seconds later the tablet vibrates but nothing else happens and I've held down both buttons simultaneously for up to a minute. Then I have to hit the reset button with a paper clip for it to work again. I have a new one on the way as a replacement, but wanted to try the cold boot process to see if that would somehow fix my sudden loss of haptic feebdack.

Are you only holding the volume down button (and not the volume up)? If you're holding that then hit the power button (once you feel it vibrate to signal it is powering up, you can release the power button and still hold the volume down button), you should then see some white text in the upper left corner of the screen. When you see this, release the volume down button, and wait until you see two images appear in the center of the screen, one will say "wipe data" and the other will be an Android icon. Check that the Android icon is highlighted and press the volume up button (if "wipe data" is highlighted, press volume down first, then volume up). In the upper left corner you should see some white text that says "Cold booting linux", and you should just have to wait for it to finish booting.
Hope that helps.

[Q] How to boot to Hboot to recover

My HOX is just rebooting over and over I did boot loader unlock with the one all in one app and then flashed a kernel for CM10. I got the boot.img from the zip file as the directions said but now it just boots to HTC screen with red letters then reboots again.
If I could get it to power off and then boot to recovery I could try to flash another ROM or if I could boot to Hboot could try another kernel flash but nothing I do seem to make any difference it just keeps rebooting to HTC screen with red letters saying this is for development purposes.
I tried holding the down volume and power to reset it but does not work tried holding up volume and power to get to Hboot but nothing changes. As long as I hold down the power button it says off but one I let go it comes back on after a few second but volume up does nothing.
Any suggestions?
I got into recovery finally hold down just the volume down with out pressing power
Glad you got it sorted out. For the future, and for benefit of other users, I point out the following: Instances of not being able to get into bootloader are almost always just not knowing the proper button sequence.
If the phone is stuck with screen on, hold and press the power button for 5 seconds or so, until the capacity button flash, then the screen turns off (this should work in virtually all circumstances as long as the screen is on). The moment the screen goes dark, press and hold volume down, and don't let go until the white bootloader screen comes up.
If the phone is "stuck" on, you might be able to press and hold vol down before, or the same time you press power button (then as described above, keep holding vol down until hboot comes up). But if the phone is booted, the timing of this method can be a bit tricky. Press it too soon, and it has the effect of making the volume go down, then to vibrate, instead of the desired effect. Press it too late, and it will probably boot into Safe Mode. But as long as you start holding vol down when the screen is black (before the white HTC boot splash) you should have it right.
If the phone is fully powered off, press volume down, keep holding it. Press the power button for about 3 seconds (don't need to hold it until the capacitive buttons flash). Then release power, don't release vol down yet, until the white bootloader screen comes up. This will only work if "Fast boot" is not selected in Settings>Power.
Many people seem to think you press and release the power button and vol down a the same time, which will only cause you to boot normally, or in Safe Mode, or in your case the boot splash.

[Completed] [Q] 7in Trio Stealth G2

I have a 7in. Trio Stealth G2. Its is stuck in a boot loop. Im currently waiting on the battery to die so I can try to hard reset that way, and to get to the Android recovery menu. The reset button on the back is completely useless at this point. Other than bouncing it off the wall im at the end of my rope. Tech support reps at Machspeed are anything but tech support. (they asked to walk me through the hard reset 3x)
Hi there,
From this thread I will quote the steps for reset: Trio Stealth G2 Hype frozen at boot logo
Hard Reset G2 – In the case of password lockouts or freezing, doing a hard reset on your android device could help you get back to the factory defaults. First you need to make sure your tablet is powered off. Hold down on the Volume + button and hold down the Power button at the same time. As soon as the tablet's screen turns on let go of the Power button but keep the Volume + button held down until you see a large Android in the center of the screen. At this point you will see a screen with boot options. Use the Volume – button to go down to Wipe Data Factory Reset and tap the Power button to select this option. On the next screen use the Volume – button again to go down to Yes and use the Power button to select. At this point it will be going through the wiping and resetting process. When it's done you will see the first screen you came to when you first started the setup. Just tap the Power button to select Reboot System Now.
Make sure tablet is powered off.
Hold down Volume + button and Power button at same time.
When screen comes on let go of Power button.
When the large Android shows on screen let go of Volume + button.
Use Volume – button to scroll to Wipe Data/ Factory Reset
Tap Power button to select.
Use Volume – button to scroll to Yes.
Tap Power button to select.
Tap Power button to select Reboot System Now.

Display locked, Recovery just says "no command"

Ok here is my problem. I had a waterdamage that toasted a small part of my screen and as it seems, maybe something else too.
After the waterdamage the phone made some kind of reset.
Now the display is locked and i dont know the correct pattern.
In Fastboot Flash Mode "Factory" reset doesn't reset the lockscreen.
And "Recovery" doesnt work at all it just says "Kein Befehl" witch is german for "no command"
Any suggestions/solutions on what i could try? or is my device now a few months after the end of the warranty dead?
Solved it myself
Fixed it myself. Here if someone lost soul in the future has the same problem.
1Ensure the device is powered off.
2Press and hold the Volume Down button for 3 seconds. While still holding the Volume Down button, press and release the Power button.
3From the "Boot Mode Selection Menu" screen, select Recovery. Note Utilize the Volume Down button to scroll through the menu options and the Volume Up button to select.
4From the "Android system recovery" screen, press and hold the Power button then press and release the Volume Up button to display the menu options.
5Select wipe data/factory reset.
6Note Utilize the Volume buttons to highlight and the Power button to select.
7Select Yes -- delete all user data.
8Note Allow several seconds for the factory data reset process to complete.
9Select reboot system now.
