[Q] is it posible to configure hardware volume button? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had this function on SuperOSR rom and now on ics roms I miss it!
The next week is going to be quite dirty for me. As I'm going to ride my ATV a lot and this thing protected my phone from getting dirty.
I searched the market and the forum, but i didn't find anything.
Is it something simple to do or is it more complicated like kernel related stuff?

Ok, maybe i'm asking too much... but an real alternative Home..

I have a question that turns me on the head a few weeks, but there is a real alternative Home? .. I mean, almost two years now I have the hands on my HTC Dream, I must admit that I've seen very few, and try less. The question arises, there really is a programmer who is working on a real alternative to classic and multiple ROM that you see around? or we will always have many copies of already cooked ROM with only small changes that can range from icons, graphics or small settings to improve performance? Well i notice I'm not complaining about the excellent results we are getting our programmers, who try to keep pace with each new release, ported to every device imaginable (almost all with small donations) etc etc. but I doubt that I'll never have a real alternative as it could be TAT Home or easier SlideScreenPro ..
Sorry for my bad English

sorry why?..
Good point, wrong section.
You're totally right about devs who only change or pimp Cyanogen's work. I think it's dumb and pointless. I understand amount of work etc, most of android devs on XDA are very talented people, but after trying 34 or 67th custom rom i saw there's nothing better than CM. Of course, there were several awesome roms like SuperD or sth like that, but after all it's just another pimped CM.
Speaking about home replacements - the greatest apps are those which are modified stock launchers. I don't like a fact, there's no really good other home replacement, but i'd rather use perfect-working ADW or LauncherPro than incompatible, slow, unstable, blablablah, etc. home like TAT, SlideScreen or Zune. And of couse most of those super-extra-special-unique home replacements (which don't even work stable) are paid. There's nothing more to say.
in the pre-CM5 era, there were lots of roms not based on cyanogen
anyone remember open eclair? it had the BEST boot animation ever.
Make your own Simple as that. If you're not capable hire someone. Or lastly, learn to code so you may make your own. Don't think any of the three are worth it, then maybe your idea isn't worth it. Just saying. A last option or rather possibility is having someone more talented than you(coding wise) do it out of their own free will because they share your thoughts.

You got that right. The only real reason all our ROMs are based on CM now is because almost everyone has moved on to a better phone. As soon as the N1 came out it started and hasn't stopped. Also, for that reason, this topic is pretty pointless. If this were occurring way back when Android was new and everyone copypasta'd cyanogen then it would make sense. That was never the case.
And there is nothing wrong with tweaking Cyanogen ROMs. Open source is meant for this. Cyanogen modifies AOSP then themers and file pushers share their optimizations on top of that.
And about a real home replacement: ADWLauncher is a real home replacement that kicks major a**. Ander states that his work is open source as well... So you can take his wheel and make your own little bike, dude. Peddle on...

[Q] banishing ICS blue?

HI all,
First post, so please be gentle with me!, I have been lurking here heavily for a couple of months since getting an android phone, and have to say it's a fantastic resource for getting the most out of android....
Now, on to the question.... I've played with various ROMs on my sensation XE, and love the functionality of ICS over GB but one thing that really really bugs me is ICS blue everywhere, it just clashes so badly with the red buttons on an XE....
I've been hoping I'm not the only one with this hangup and someone might release a sensation ICS ROM with different colours (either the green from GB, or even better an olive green!)....
Failing that it's a case of DIY I guess, I've been trying to figure out how, and think I'm beginning to get a handle on it but still havent found time to get my hands dirty (I'm new to android, but in another life 15 years ago was a unix sysadmin, so a lot of this is kinda familiar but half forgotten and still a lot to learn!)...
Now I've found some references to what would need changing in the ICS systemui and framework, guess I should find time to try it, but if there is someone with more experience that would like to see this, maybe they could lend me a hand or advice when it all goes pear shaped!?

How to ignore a call?

Running rooted stock ICS.
Whenever I get a call I get 2 options: answer and reject
What if I want to ignore the call? You know, not answer but have the phone stop ringing. How do I do this?
Also, the answer call screen sucks. What the hell is this drag the button into the ring crap? Anybdy know how to get rid of sense, or atleast the asnwer screen, without installing a custom rom? I respect the people who make custom roms, but I've never used one that was as stable as stock, so I've a bit hesitant to use them.

Try pressing volume down button when u receive a call
jyo1 beat me to it....
So if it is in my pocket, I take it out and put it face down on a table or press the volume down button? Thanks, I'll try it tomorrow.
I really wish HTC sense was a bit more intuitive. So far all it does is cause non-sense apps to crash and make me relearn how to use an Android phone. I've had two different alarm clock apps crash, as in the alarm didn't go off and I work up to a screen saying the app had crashed, because of sense. I'm really considering switching to a non-sense custom rom. It reminds me of all the problems I had with apps when I used MIUI on my U8800. I really really liked MIUI, but so many apps had problems with it.

WOW, you're really having a bad experience with Stock Sense. Non-intuitive I agree with, too much arcane knowledge but that's the same with all roms/apps. I don't think I ever had an issue with the Alarm clock on either Stock or Custom ROMs, although I tend to use the standard one that's built in, just swap to an analogue face for the clock.
The ignore call thing (flip the phone) I seem to remember from an early TV advert for the Sensation.
Can't comment on MIUI, I tried an early alpha/beta on my old Desire but gave up and went on a round robin of ROMs 'til I settled on CM6/7 for the desire.

At first I used the stock alarm clock. Then when I woke up I kept turning it off instead of snoozing, because I didn't know how the button/ring combo worked. The first few phone calls I got I also didn't understand the button/ring thing. I kept trying to drag the ring to the reject button and couldn't figure out why that was answering the phone. I then tried an alarm clock where you had to do a math problem to snooze it. But the hardest difficulty was just division with some subtraction. I was hoping for at least some algebra, or an option for some easy calculus. Having to do a derivatives/integrals first thing in the morning would get me out of bed.
I'm currently working on my MBA in international management, and one thing I've learned from some case studies is this: If an idiot can't figure out how to use your product without reading the instruction manual, your product has a problem. I'm an idiot and who has had the phone for about a week now and I still am having trouble figuring things out. That's bad product design. My first Android phone I had figured out in a couple of hours.
Don't get me wrong though, I love the Sensation XE. It is an awesome phone, I just really don't like sense. I like things very simple and direct, and Sense is trying to be all magical like a certain fruit phone. Unfortunately, this will probably be the one and only HTC phone I purchase, because of sense. I don't regret this purchase though.

LOL, maths first thing in the morning. Mind you I'm the sort of person that If I set the alarm I usually wake up before it goes off. (subject to beer consumption). Like the style though, just don't have too much Mao Tai (evil tasting drink).

Agree, Arcane knowledge, unfortunately that goes with complexity of the system in question. I'm, like you I suspect, not a great reader of manuals.

I've recently moved to CM10 (AOSP Jelly Bean), it's only in alpha/beta but it's still pretty slick given its status.
I used to be on Virtuous Inquisition on my pre replacement/replacement Sensation. Sense back end with AOSP look and feel.

[Q] Why lack of ROMs / Root even worth it?

Hello everyone,
I just got my TF300T last night and it is a great tablet. Before I do anything (upgrade to Jellybean, etc) I am wondering why it seems there isn't much development for the tablet. I have had a couple android tablets and phones, and have rooted all of them for custom ROMs and such, but it almost seems like that's not really done a whole lot here. I just read one thread where the stock ROM was preferred by a good deal over any other ROM. Is there any reason for this? Any particular reasons I should still root, other than installing custom ROMs and kernels?
Thanks for your input.

Rooting is not required to install a rom, most non stock roms are rooted when you install ( they require you to unlock and void warranty ). If you wish to stay stock and don't see a need for root then don't do it.
If I could begin again I would stay on ICS for a time longer. I think good things for this unit are around the next corner.
Devs are working hard to make this happen. The JB bootloader has caused problems with most roms we are accustomed to. Once on JB you can't go back to ICS ( at this time ).
Good Luck!
Thank you for the response. How would I load TWRP onto the tablet then? I know people are suggesting not to unlock the tablet's bootloader unless I have to, so I'd prefer not to.
I figure if I go to JB, I'd load something like CleanROM as people seem to be quite happy with it.
Any additional information is greatly appreciated.
You need to unlock your tablet if u want to install a Rom and recovery
Oh ok. Gotcha. So then I think I know which guide I have to use. Thank you for your help and clarification.
OK, unlocked and such. Loaded CleanROM. Running well so far, but now I have to research ROMs to see which reigns supreme.
Cleanrom is the best for with unt's kernel

Since you are now on the JB bootloader here is a thread to watch as there will be a new rom coming, don't hold your breath. The reason for the breath statement is this is a big undertaking. It will allow numerous other roms you don't now see in the dev section. Everything now available on JB is based on the stock kernel, this should overcome that limitation.
AOSP, AOKP, Paranoid Android, and so on

For me personally, I prefer using a stock-based ROM over the AOSP based ROM for day to day use. The reason is really simple, and that is the keyboard dock works much better on the stock based ROM. In CM10, for example, the lock/unlock button on the keyboard doesn't work. Also, closing the tablet and the keyboard does not result in the screen turning off automatically (you have to manually press the power button whenever you want to close the tab-dock). If you forget to do this, the battery takes a hit. As well, the mouse cursor in AOSP ROM is not exactly a "cursor", more like a giant circle (it's the default touch indicator in android). I use the keyboard dock a lot for drafting my college assignments, so stock-based Roms are perfect for me.

I've noticed the same thing with the closing the tab-dock issue. When I turn off my screen and close it, the screen turns back on right before the tab touches the dock to close, so I have to turn it off again right before closing it to prevent random stuff from opening up/battery draining.
Other than that, I've had great fun playing with the various ROMs. I ran CM9 for the longest time but I switched recently to the Blackbean ROM. Its based on CM9 so it has all the features I like, but its all black/inverted so its better for battery and a lot easier to read in bed at night.
CleanROM is good, so is HydroROM, but I've found that I really enjoy the speed and efficiency of some of these other custom ROMS.

[Q] Help me choose a ROM please

Hi,
so I have had a rooted phone for a while now, but I'm starting to get tired of the stock ROM so I thought I'd try something different. I've spent a couple of hours looking through these forums and I can't see the difference between the different cyanogenmod implementations, i.e. skrilax, dhacker and epinter all seem to have slightly different versions? Anyway, I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good ROM to use for a long period of time, say a month or so, without crashing *much*. I need bluetooth and camcorder working too, these also seem to be issues with some of them.
Alternatively, links some posts that help me better get my bearings on what's what would be well appreciated
Thanks
If you go with CyanogenMod, I would recommend using skrilax's builds since they are released every night and it works with the CM updater built into the ROM.
Camcorder works fine and Bluetooth is mostly OK, but I sometimes get random reboots while using Bluetooth headphones. Not sure if it's still a known issue or just some weird thing with my setup.
Also, your location says Melbourne, so I'm assuming you have the xt925? That might factor into some people's answers a little bit.

spot on
Anyway, thanks for the reply, but I was about to flash skrilax's ROM when I realised you said IF I choose cyanogenmod... is there a better alternative? I'd like something that's fast (unlike the stock rom is now -.-) and doesn't kill the battery, and some new features to play around with would be nice.
It really all depends on what you want. Some other ROMs like Paranoid Android, MIUI, AOKP, etc have more features than CM, but CM has always been rock solid from my experience (this phone and my previous one).
Doesn't hurt to experiment a little, either, as long as you keep nandroid backups handy.
I haven't heard any reports of significant increases in battery life on custom roms. I wonder if this is the case?
I actually would like to know what the longest screen on time and or standby time a person achieved with underclocking / undervolting etc.
