Last I heard regarding at&t plans for LTE was to have it launched in one market this year. Sad.

The next network evolution will arrive this summer with the addition of LTE in five markets – Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio. We plan to add another 10 or more markets in the second half of the year, and cover 70 million Americans with LTE by year-end. We also have plans to add 20 4G devices to our robust device portfolio this year, with some of those being LTE capable.

@tx,
That was their plan early this year. Summer is three weeks from being over and nothing. Haven't even seen any good rumors of an actual LTE phone heading to at&t.

That is the way AT&T operates. They rarely pre-announce or communicate anything and always wait until the last minute to implement. Look how the rumor was hspua would be enabled in May, they waited until the last day of May. Gingerbread was rumored for mid summer and it was the first week of August.

I guess I have just become somewhat jaded. When at&t purchased the largest regional carrier here over two years ago they did so with the promise of upgrading the network. They finally began turning on 3g only a few months ago in a couple markets with no new progress since then.
To make matters worse, their edge network has degraded/become saturated to the point that it is almost unusable. 60k/s when a year ago we could at least get 200-250.

Our Inspire's operate on ATT's current 4G network, HSPA+. They are now getting set to roll out LTE as previously stated. Both are technically 4G, but they're different networks
The Nexus Prime would be awesome to have...knowing how much of a game changer the original Nexus was. But I've got a special place in my heart for HTC, and the Holiday is very comparable, minus the ICS
I'm lucky to get 2g living out in the sticks lol... as far as the drones thinking that apple invented touch screen with the iPhone I'll reserve comment
I don't know if I should get the Nexus prime or the holiday -_-

My upgrade is up in March. Unless something else comes out that is better, or it looks like something else is coming soon around that time (Prefer a HTC product). I'll be getting the Holiday for sure. Unless the Inspire REALLY grows on me. =P
Remember the pentium d vs Athlon 64 x2? Intel stuck two Prescott pentium 4s on a die and called it dual core. Athlon was one giant processor with two cores. The cpu in the Holliday is like the pentium d in that it has two qualcomm-pimped cortex a8s stuck on a soc.the inspire is fast if you set it up right and I think any phone bastardized by att is like that.
Qualcomm has this little deal called Krait and it is awesome. It uses two cortex a9's that have been pimped by qualcomm. It also employs adreno 225 and if they can not screw up the drivers for it it should hang with nvidia's kal-el silicon or beat it. I also expect it to tentacle rape samsung's a9, exynos or whatever it is with the fury of an angry god.
I recommend waiting for this krait silicon and a 720p display.

Technically, HSPA+ is not 4G. HSPA+ runs on two separate stacks just like 3G. Even the current provisioning of LTE should be considered 3.9G.

I'll be curious to see if there's been any improvement to the LTE chipset battery drain on the Holiday. Battery life on the HTC Thunderbolt with LTE enabled is pretty horrendous from what I read.

Again, technically, inspire can work on LTE stack but since it doesn't have the radio for it, it won't be able to take advantage of the LTE throughput.
the sales reps will conveniently leave that little part out when they tell you the Inspire will "work" on LTE stack. You have to ask them "oh yea? Will the Inspire actually work at LTE speed?"

The limitation will be the hardware, the radios in the AT&T/Rogers version will not work with TMO's 4G network.

Information is conflicting, but some specs for the AT&T One X list the AWS band (1700/2100 MHz) used by T-Mobile for 3G/4G. Its not supported in software, but some have speculated (maybe wishful thinking) that the hardware is there, and something just needs to be changed in software to make it work.
This was the case with the Galaxy Note. AWS is not officially supported, but the hardware is actually there, and one of the folks here on XDA was able to hack it to work.
Its not a sure bet whether such a thing is possible on the AT&T One X. Seems largely speculation for the time being. Unless it really happens, using the One X on EDGE seems like a poor compromise. The One S doesn't have nearly as nice a screen, but same chipset, and still a nice phone. And if I were on T-Mob, I would certainly consider it.

Hmm... Ok well I will gladly eat the words as I am all about devices being able to work with the broadest number of carriers...
The ability to do that is rare but perhaps the most recent chipsets have all the radio components there to make it only a SW issue...
I'll happily stand corrected if someone has it working!

This has only been the case on the Galaxy Note, that I'm aware. And a (somewhat skeptical) "maybe" on the One X.
I think its less of a "recent chipset" thing, and more an indication of market forces at the time. My hunch is that it had something to do with the (now defunct) merger deal between AT&T and T-Mobile. As both these phones were being spec'ed and designed around the time the deal was looking like it was going through. These devices would have acted as "bridge" devices for when the AT&T started taking over the T-mobile frequencies.
If the deal had gone through, my guess is that the AWS bands would have been fully supported on these devices, and we would have seen more phones with similar band support.

Perhaps but at&t owns no 1700 mhz spectrum but does have some 2100 mhz although a lot less since they gave up some huge chunks in the breakup deal with TMO. I believe though that the way that TMO uses their spectrum for 4G is that one band say 1700 is for download and the other, 2100, is for upload...
Previously the devices for at&t didn't have the ability to do the 1700 band but most had the 2100 capability since it is also used internationally.
So if it does have the expanded radio capability it would be interesting to see if someone could disable the unused radios to assist with battery life... With so many smart people here I am sure that already is happening but just my curiosity. TMO users would want to disable the low band radios 700/850/900 since TMO USA doesn't use those so why waste power on them, AT&T users would want to disable the 1700 band, etc...
Again probably already being done and I am just getting to the party...
There had been a few phones this had worked on, sgs2, lg thrill, the note as stated before. I think the radio hardware just needs to be told what bands to look for, but I would be way wrong.

Voice over LTE and before somebody says 'I already can do voice over LTE' You're wrong since it's actually using 2G/3G for Voice. Metropcs is the first carrier to actually have VoLTE. Also, the S3 most likely won't have it but we can't be too sure since of how Verizon is but my guess is they'll make new phones that are specially made for VoLTE.
I can't answer your question, but I do have a related question.
Other than presumably increasing call quality, what are the advantages of this?
Maybe battery savings / better 4g connectivity because radios won't have to even worry about 2g/3g, based on the assumption that 4g is implemented to the point where 4g will be available anywhere?
Really there is no advantage except to the carrier. What this means is that progressively Verizon can stop selling 2g/3g devices which will allow them to allocate that spectrum towards expanded LTE coverage. Lightening their own load more or less. I would suspect most current (Q4 '11 - present) should be capable, which would mean they could push an update if you are in an LTE coverage area. Now, when you leave that area you would go back to 2g/3g, at least until they expand.

I would imagine to enable a technology like VoLTE all we would need is a software update.
I do hope Verizon rolls it out soon, as using actual voice calls on a phone after being used to VOIP methods of speech just makes the aged cellular voice network look shameful.
That would probably open up a whole can of worms in regards to net neutrality. If voice is going over the data connection then that would blow away any data cap in a few calls which means they wouldn't count it towards your cap which is discriminating data. Unless it works differently.
@OP: Without circuit-switched fallback, any VoLTE calls on Verizon would automatically drop when out of LTE range. The phone can't handoff the call from LTE to the CDMA radios.

Aren't all the major US carriers against net neutrality? The US government is in bed with the major carriers, so whatever they (the carriers) say goes.
This probably won't translate to the US, but the South Korean carriers that are now offering VoLTE charge the same price that they did for 2G/3G calls, which is about 9 cents/minute (as opposed to Verizon's 40 cents/minute)
Will VoLTE in the US really use that much data? I doubt it'd be more than 320 kbps (maximum quality for MP3 files). 2G/3G calling is like 5-10 kbps, if I recall correctly.
According to this article:http://www.koreaittimes.com/story/22840/skt-launches-world’s-first-hd-voice-over-lte
SKT (Korean carrier) does VoLTE at 23.85kbps using the AMR-WB codec.
23.85 kbps: 2.98125 KB/second > 178.875 KB/minute > 10.7325 MB/hour
2GB gets you ~186.35 hours (~11,180.99 minutes) of talk time.
for comparison:
128 kbps: 16 KB/s > 0.96 MB/m > 57.6 MB/h
192 kbps: 24 KB/s > 1.44 MB/m > 86.4 MB/h
256 kbps: 32 KB/s > 1.92 MB/m > 115.2 MB/h
320 kbps: 40 KB/s > 2.40 MB/m > 144 MB/h
EDIT
Also, assuming the AMR-WB codec (23.85kbps), $10 (1GB) should get you ~5,590 minutes. Under the current plan (40 cents/minute), that much talk time will run you ~$2,236.20. I really hope they don't charge for VoLTE separately. :X
Can someone check my math? (kbps=kilobits/second; KB=kilobyte; 8 bits=1 byte)

Why does it not make sense to release your proprietary hardware in your own country? It makes perfect sense. Google it. Besides, our builds were approved months ago by the FCC. Samsung may not have even had a completed product or working one at the time. There are hundreds if not thousands of good reasons we didn't get it. Their phone also may not support global bands like ours does, that is a key selling point to US consumers. Not to mention Verizon and they other carriers had their say so. I could keep going.
To use your own logic, why wouldn't they have released that version internationally? lol

Korea's LTE works differently from the US. Korean LTE is compatible with th Exynos 4412 (quadcore), but they need a separate 4G radio. Also, it has a DMB tuner (pretty standard in Korea), which is basically you get a TV broadcast on your phone (and I think it's free, too). The phone is 0.4mm thicker, though, making it 9mm as opposed to 8.6mm.
I'm actually in Korea right now on vacation (I'm Korean). There's an ad for the Galaxy S III LTE (quadcore) at pretty much every block in the street.
As for a link: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=galaxy+s+iii+quad+core+lte+korea
Pretty the whole first page of Google results for "galaxy s iii quad core lte korea" confirms the quad core lte version in Korea.

Apple confused the hell out of everyone on the 4S. I frequently talk to people with the iPhoney that think they have 4G service. Also heard of an IPOD nano coming out that is labeled 5G? or something like that. I just wish they would continue to avoid 4G service and dread the day Apple users suck up all the 4G bandwidth.
SGS3 is an awesome phone, whether you are on 3G/4G-LTE it's going to kick your old phone to the curb. The phone is faster so I could possibly pull better speeds even on 3G than your current handset. If you travel at all you'll be 4G/LTE ready and when you finally get updated locally you'll see awesome immediately.
There is also huge support for the SGS3 because of the bootloader getting unlocked a few weeks back and of course because it's just such an awesome phone period.
My question is specific to US VARIANT of Nexus 5
Hey guys does nexus 5 support EvDO?? I have read it supports CDMA , but does it support EvDO which supports faster data rates on CDMA?
Thanks
I'm looking for the same answer, too. It's surprising to see this thread left unanswered in this community.
Sprint 3G is EVDO, so yes.

If the OP is "leaning torwards the Big red side", then the OP should clearly say so. OP simply asks if the Nexus has EVDO support and not just CDMA. A simple visit to the Nexus 5 website would suffice.

I wonder what would "leaning towards the Big red side" be. An american idiom? Google didn't show any related results for that.

LordLugard,
It shows the band classes of CDMA network the phone supports.

... Ok, and??
In this day and age one can associate them equally (CDMA and EvDO). That's like someone making a brand new 3G phone and say it's only 3G (in this case meaning UMTS). Making a UMTS (384Kbps) only chipset would make no sense because even the most basic phones is expected to have HSDPA (up to 7.2Mbps). They might not HSPA+ (21Mbps) or DC-HSPA (42Mbps) but they'll for sure have HSDPA.
So to answer your question, yes the Nexus 5 supports EvDO and even SVDO but not sure that last part is activated yet.
