I seem to have the same problem. My contacts are definitely sync'ing.
In South Africa the mobile format is 0xx xxx xxxx, which is how I have saved my contacts. Sometimes a call or message will come through as +27 xx xxx xxxx (+27 is South Africa) and then ICS doesn't link the number to the contact. GB used to do it perfectly.
I had the same issue. I installed exDialer (free) + ICS theme. Not a solution but it is a great workaround.
Try this, press Menu > Manage apps, now make sure you are on the "All" tab, look for "Contact Storage" and tap it, now press "Force stop" then "Clear data", now open the contacts app and it will re-sync your contacts, hopefully this will fix the issue.
that works great for contacts, but Go SMS still only shows numbers. It seems like everything else has synced correctly (and yes, I cleared Go SMS data, as well )
I see the same issue and found that changing the numbers to +15555555555 format made the contacts display correctly in Go SMS at least. I have a mixture of number formats in my contacts from my various phones over the years. ie; (555) 555-5555, 555-555-5555, etc.

I tried your suggestion...I removed the '-' from one phone number, then went to gosms to check, and all my contact names were there...even ones I didn't edit.
soooo...I have no idea what happened, but everything works now

Edit numbers to be in proper format with country code.
SMS & MMS
I have all my numbers stored in contact in +355 or whatever...
If somebody call me it displays correctly, but SMS messages from some people are writen in 050... only numbers, no name.
Also on some carriers like Si.Mobil (SLO) the MMS messages are not working.
Some idea?
Check if you have multiple contacts for the same person, maybe they're even on different locations (Gmail, Phone, Sim). I've got all mine on Gmail Contacts. MMS works for me on Si.Mobil without issues (received a holiday greet from Si.Mobil yesterday).
Am having the same problem ... using Pansi SMS and the names don't show up. It works fine in the call log, just the SMS that's affected.
I tried a fresh install of a rom contacts synced through my exchange account without signing into my gmail account and had the problem. Logged into gmail and still have the problem.
Anyone has any idea? And yes, all numbers are in the local format +965 (for Kuwait) followed by a space and xxxxxxxx.
Will appreciate all help

I seem to have a weird problem with the Messages app from HTC. Searched all over the internet and XDA and nobody else seems to have reported the issue.
The issue is, if I go into the Messages app, the list shows all contacts names fine. But for some contacts, if I click into them, it shows the message history, but on top where it's supposed to show the name, instead shows their phone number, minus any separators, and a ">" symbol at the end.
Say, for example, a contact in the Messages app is John Doe. I see John Doe in the messages list, then when I click into it, instead of name it goes to, say, 15555555555>, and sometimes the whole thing is just black.
On the bottom where I write reply, the number shows up fine exactly as it's formatted in the actual contact info.
But if I try to reply there, when I click "Send", the keyboard disappears, but the message never gets sent, and this happens no matter how many times I try to reply or type the message again. As long as it's a reply, it doesn't work. But starting a new message to the same contact works just fine, but it's annoying to have to type the whole message, then copy and paste, and start a new message to the contact just to reply.
And it wouldn't be inconsistent formats either. Some numbers I have in both Google and Phone, I can delete all phone numbers except the Google one in the problem contact and issue persists. Some contacts have the number laid out the same way in (xxx) xxx-xxxx as the problem contact, and still works. I can change the problem contacts' phone number format to xxxxxxxxxx or 1xxxxxxxxxx and neither fixes anything.
I've tried pulling the battery, turning off fast boot and pulling battery, restarting, all the same result.
And this ONLY happens with the stock Messages app, all the other SMS apps I downloaded off the Market works just fine.
Any help would be appreciated, it's starting to drive me nuts.
Thanks!
I have noticed something odd about the stock messaging as well. In the text box where you type, some contacts display a phone number in the top of the box, while some do not. I don't know what causes it. I thought it was the way that HTC Sense sync'd to FB, but that didn't change anything.

I think it may have something to do with the Select Contact Name option when you edit a contact. Say I have a two phone numbers and an email address for Bob. Once I set "Bob" as the contact name for his entry, that it what appears when I start composing messages to him.
I hope this helps.

I can confirm the issue, so at least you're not the only one. But in my case it went away on its own sometime between temp rooting and unsuccessful over clocking
I posted this a week or so, I don't know if it helped the last person. but I had this EXACT problem and it was unbelievably frustrating when I first got this and after a few days of searching and banging my head against the wall, I found something that worked. This problem arised when I had double contacts from my messaging and I tried to rectify it. Eventually I got it all to work fine.
This is how you solve it (or how I solved mine).
1: Sync everything to Google. Edit the contact list in google (use the automatic duplicate deletion), delete useless contacts etc.
2. Remove contacts from EVERYWHERE. Sim card, phone, uncheck google sync. Your phone should then be completely empty for contacts.
3. Re-sync with google contacts. if you want you can copy it back to the SIM and you shouldn't get doubles. I think I just left it with google only but the end result is I don't have 9 different "danny's" show up when I go to compose new message because I know three of them.
This issue is bugging me too...
After experimenting today I have figured out why it is happening; any contact I have with an email address within the contact details I get the name followed by the mobile number within the HTC stock message app... Any contacts without an email address are fine.
I have experimented by removing an email address from the contact and straight away the said contact will display correctly in the HTC message app.
Unfortunately I have not yet figured out how to have contacts with phone numbers and email addresses display correctly. Real shame as loving my new Sensation... a minor niggle I guess
Tgis has happened to my phone once, but rectified itself with a soft-reset. It hasn't happened again since then. Not much help here, but its definitely not an isolated incident.

Hey everyone,
ever since I updated from Android Kitkat to the L preview and the final release of Lollipop, I've had an issue with text messaging. I use the google hangouts app to send my text messages, I've verified my number within the Hangouts app and I've also selected it as my default messaging app. So the problem is: whenever I send a text message, the app says it's been sent through sms and money from my prepaid is taken as well, so I know it was actually processed by my carrier. But for some inexplicable reason, no one I text actually receives the message. I've tried to use an alternative app like tetra and the new stock messaging app from google with the same result. I haven't got a clue what could cause this, but because it occured after the update, I'm guessing it could be on the software side.
So has anyone experienced this and knows how to fix this? All answers are appreciated.
(I've a Dutch carrier, Vodafone)
*edit: Calling works fine.
**edit: fix: Make sure the APN of the hangouts app is the same as your phone's, apparently this may differ which causes complications
***edit: it didn't fix it, reverting to 4.4.4 did

I would like to add something new, it is very strange. I swapped my sim card with another person's sim card who also happens to own a nexus 5. When the sim cards were swapped, we were both able to send each other text messages from both phones and sim cards. But the moment I put my sim card back in my phone and sent a message, the other person didn't receive it. It seems like it isn't the phone's fault neither the sim card, but yet it is. I'm extremely confused.

Ah I fixed it! Apparently the APN from my phone's settings can differ from the APN of the hangouts app. By default it was onpda.stm.sk.ca instead of live.vodafone.com, I don't know why or how this is possible. Just glad it's fixed, thanks for the help anyway!
They may have blocked you
Alright I found out what the definitive problem is: Android 5.0
When I reverted to stock 4.4.4 I had NO issues whatsoever. But with the L preview and the official release I did have problems. I also tried to update from the stock 4.4.4 to 5.0 but I still couldn't text. Anway I hope it's just a carrier incompatibility thing that will soon be fixed.
If anyone knows how android 5.0 can impact and or can come up with a way to fix this manually, please let me know!
Additional update, I've contacted my Dutch carrier (Vodafone), and they informed me that they will look into it before the OTA update is released.

Nope it wasn't, it seemed lik a fix because I was able to send a message to 1 person but to no one else. So as I said, I'm back on Kitkat which is actually a permanent fix. I've contacted Vodafone about this issue and they said they will resolve it before the OTA comes out. But I can safely presume that you have the same issue? Let me know!
(My apn is exactly the same as here http://forum.portablegear.nl/mobiel-internet-instellingen-vodafone-apn-t7.html)
Thanks. Yes I'm having the same issue. Also tried those APN settings, but it didn't help.
Well I'm not sure weather it works.. Just give a try
In the settings->apps->Hangouts->uninstall updates
and then try sending some messages ...
if that does not then update the app from the playstore again and then try sending...
If still the problem persists then it is your SIM card problem try PORT or alternate SIM CARD .
Have you tried talking to your phone provider? Might be something on their end.
No it is Lollipop + Hangouts. There is a bug in the way it handles non-US texts. Watch the outgoing number and if it changes to +xx where xx is the country code then that is where your problem is. Google Lollipop country code and you should find some info.
It is also the same reason that I can't SMS short codes from Hangouts using Google Voice because it adds a +1. Hangouts on the PC or the GV app work just fine.

I have an unlocked US variant S6 SM-G920T with Baseband (G920TUEU3COK1).
I have been using it on Tmobile without issues since Cyber Monday.
But now, randomly, when I get a phone call from a contact that is already in the phone, I see the number on the display rather than the contact name. After I either answer or reject or allow to go to voicemail, and then go look at the call log, the contact name is displayed. This is getting annoying as I keep ignoring calls that I would like to take ( and sometimes need to take).
Only thing I've tried is to clear data and clear cache in the contacts app.
Phone is not rooted. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Couple of questions:
1) Is it all contacts, or just some?
2) What type of contacts are they? Phone contacts, Gmail contacts or some other account?
All my contacts are stored in Google. So they were synced when I setup the phone. The issue seems to be random, but more often than not. I tried clearing the data in the phone app as well. No luck.
Thanks.
Update: I have just seen that this issue is for all incoming calls when the phone is in a LOCKED state.
When the call comes through while I am using the phone the contract shows fine with the name.
But still no solution in sight.
Just activated my Mate 9 in the US a few hours ago on AT&T. Seems like calls and texts are being sent/received fine. However, when I start a new text, start typing a contact that is in my Contacts (that I synced to the phone via Google), the contact comes up, but when I select it I get an error message: "Invalid Recipient <(732) 283-0192)> He or she will not receive the message", without the quotes. Not sure if it's related, but I am also not seeing all recipients on group texts that I confirmed had multiple recipients that are in my Contacts.
Any ideas?

I know this is late but is this a known bug in all international versions? Or is it just the way the stock app is programmed in all international versions. My brother has this and it works with country code added but is a hassle and wants to know if he should get an exchange or if it'll be the same with the new one.

Hello all,
I'm having trouble getting any text on my U12+. I've seen one other case on androidCentral forums but not much of any results. Figure i would chime in and see if anyone else figured this out.
I had this issue as well. I had to go to a Verizon store and get a new sim card, which he activated in my old HTC 10 then put into the U12+. After that the tech suspended my sms service then reactivated and I was good to go. The only issue I have is that I can not receive MMS messages from any 3rd party app, so I am stuck using the stock one.
Call Verizon -- spent 3 minutes with a level 1 technician who re-provisioned the phone for sms & mms. All is working as expected (although the stock messaging system wouldn't send GIFs, but I downloaded Textra and it works fine).

Soooooooo, it turns out there's an MMS bug with Textra which hasn't been fixed yet. I tried all the suggested steps (clean install, change MMS behavior, modify APN settings, etc) and MMS doesn't work with Textra. I emailed the developers and we'll see what happens.
I then downloaded Pulse and everything works as expected with that app. Not sure about any other third party messaging apps right now.

I emailed textra support over the weekend and after running through all the settings, they had me install android messages and that did not work with MMS as well. I tried with a few other 3rd party apps and they came to the conclusion that it is an android Oreo bug and they can't do anything to fix it.
Thanks everyone! I will try the steps mentioned above and report back.
Interestingly enough mms receive works for me on Verizon messages and the default htc text app. It does not work (just receiving pics) in Textra or Android messages. This feels like an OS side issue? I was on the phone with tier 2 support when I first got it and they reprovisioned twice. Then said just use the apps that work lol

Just tried it, no go as well. Funny thing is, i froze the stock messages with titanium as well, but it thawed itself on reboot. I'll give Pulse a try, does it compress images sent?

Not 100% sure about compression, but there didn't seem to be any loss in quality when I texted pictures or animated GIFs to myself

Pulse works great, wonder why other apps are having issues. Thanks for the recommendation!
