[Q] what am I doing wrong? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yes, I know there are multiple xda forum posts and external sites about rooting the Evo Shift (speedy). I have tried to root my Speedy 2.3.3 using every site and post I could find. TO much of my dismay I am only able to acquire temp root. I cannot preform the downgrade or a perm root. What am I missing? I tried RUU (both types) and no luck. I have tried both batch attempts and still nothing. Both Z4 and Visionary apps acquire me a temp root but when I go to downgrade it doesn't flash to S-off status.
Please let me know if there is other options. If you tell me a link and I have ried it I will reply "already tried." I am getting ready to throw my phone and computer through a window with this.

You need to downgrade to 2.2 first theres a post about it in general forum.

Enraged21 is correct if you are on 2.3.3 you must first downgrade to 2.2 . Try THIS THREAD it will guide you through the process, step by step. From temp Root, to downgrade, to Full Root, and Flashing.

Okay, obviously there is a lack of communication in me saying I have tried every almost every post in this forum and I cannot achieve a downgrade please re-read my original post carefully. I have done the following steps.
1.) Backed up phone
2.) Factory Reset Phone through boot-loader
3.) search for a forum post in regards to rooting my HTC Speedy
4.) Follow forum post for Temp rooting (achieved)
5.) Follow Forum post for downgrade (Failed)
6.) Return to Step 2. and start with another post.
Please don't take my tone for more than a lack of patience when I have to repeat myself. Please understand this is frustrating that a simple coding is glitching out and causing me grief.

If your on 2.3.3 you shouldn't be using Z4 or Visionary to acquire temp root. Your going to have to follow this guide to temp root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185243 or even easier use Indirects's script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277793
If I'm misreading your post and you've already tried these I apologize. Once you have temp root from one of the previously mentioned methods, push the misc.img (not necessary if you use the script) then run the RUU.
I've never had much luck with the RUU exe, I prefer the PG06IMG.zip method. Common issues when using the zip is getting bootloader to recognize the zip file. If it isn't recognized you can try a different sd card or formatting your card to fat32.

TY Crump84 the formatting option was not talked about in the attempts I tried. The Fre3vo option (1st link) is a rewritten version of the one from prboy1969. I have success with Indirect's script. I will try to format and install the PG06IMG.zip You didn't miss read what I was saying because you picked how far I was into the process. Time to plug away and attempt the process yet again. I will post if it works.

Just make sure you backup your card before formatting, it will erase everything.

OMG NOOOOOOOO!!!! lol yeah I did that in the very beginning. The formatting was the issue. I have it downgraded and perm rooted all because of that little extra step. Now to play with ROM's and over toys lol.

Glad you got it all sorted out . Now it's time for you to have some fun .

Are you asking if someone can take the update, add root and upload it or root it as it is running on the phone? Either way it's super easy.
If you already have root on your phone and you want a flashable version with root built in, go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
and follow the instructions to install the kitchen, extract the rom, root, and anything else you wanna add and build and flash it.
If you are looking at rooting it on the phone, go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581869

Either way you should have used that handy "Search This Forum" button in the main threads page.

OK thanks for that.. I'm pretty savvy to the search feature. Been around the block a few times brotha.
I'm pretty sure since you have the answers you would know that I've tried that rooting method with won't work with the Cellcom Hero, the rooting method there you get the wrong bootloader error, the BL on the 1.6 hero is newer than the one you use in that rooting guide... I was unsuccessful in doing it.
And no, this phone/rom/carrier doesn't have root yet.
If it was something sooo easy I certainly would just do it.
What version of hboot does this phone ship with?
Have you tried that guide they linked to lately? That guide has been updated with a new method that should work on phones that shipped with 2.1
oh.. my bad dude. Didn't mean to be so hasty on my comments. We have had a few people posting pointless threads lately here.. This is rather odd though. Give us all the info on what's running on the phone and we can check out what we can do to resolve it.

This. I don't trust "auto" roots.
The manual, ADB method is proven and not NEARLY as difficult as it may seem up front. You just have to follow the steps in jcase's thread, and you'll be done in half an hour. It's at least worth reading through.

Completely agree. You don't even need to learn adb to use it it's all just copy and paste.

i was trying to root my friends phone with captains script which holds your hand...
I came across a problem... when trying to flash the downgrade pcimgfile... kept saying "Main version older, update failed"
As per him, he has not flashed anything on his phone, everything is stock andhe got his phone about a month after i did (for it launch day). The script was able to push the files and all seems good, but i have not been able to pin point whats causing the error. (i didnt get to take a screen shot with the firmware and stuff) Ive rooted 2 phones without issues with the script and on this particular phone, it seems to be working fine until i try to flash the update.
will using adb manually help in this case? I am thinking no.... but if anyone encountered this, mind sharing what you did?
I have not had any issue with the script. Its similar to the JCase's method it just issues the commands for you. Capt includes a copy of the commands the scrips runs in his thread so I found it helpful to look at it while I ran the scrip so I knew what it was doing and when. Like any set of instructions its always good to read through it all once before you preform it so you know what to expect. If you just download everything, click start, and expect it all to run smoothly then you are likely to run into problems.
JCase's method is good to learn off of tho and might be easier for people to pin point where errors occur.
The error i am seeing is with the phone itself. I think something may have gotten updated?
the script its doing its job. I also reboot my pc and did a factory restore.
Well Capt's script says it only works with software version 605.6 or 605.9 which I assume from when it was written means 1.12.605.6 or 1.12.605.9. If the phone your using is using software version 1.13.605.7 then you should use JCase's method here
The software is 1.12.605.6
Could it be Jcase maybe also updated the downgrade img file?
That first step is causijg the problem when i try to downgrade (the first time you flash the img file)
*looked at the thread and also went to the original thread, file md info is the same for the ruu on both posts **
I also have all the original exploit files on my pc from when i rooted MY phone... since he had a software version that was on the original root threads, i didnt have to change anything
This may be an issue you would want to ask in the chat room that there is a link to in the Development section. If you look at the scripts contents as well as the manual instructions from JCase they are exactly the same up the the point you are getting stuck at. The MD5's even match. So I wouldnt expect doing one method over the other would solve your problem. Maybe someone on the chat could help you out tho.
yeah... im gonna have to go in there....
Its the same software as mines. I didnt modify any files on my pc.... it should have just worked. thanks for the feed back. Guess i will try when i get home later and have more time to mess with it.
So I had an issue in hboot, i am not sure if something was unconnected or what but i think i am in a bootloop.
It happened during the first round where you unplug you phone, I did and it started to check the sd image and had the expected no image error message.
after it checked them all the phone displayed a error message the the "main version is older" that "update failed" and to press power to reboot.
when i do that it takes me to another screen. I think its the fastboot screen and my only options are bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader, power down. All of which lead me to the same problem and no way that i can figure out.
I found this while searching for a fix, would i be able to pull the sd card, flash the update, and start over again? (albe it with a different root program)
Thank you before hand for your help.

z4root and Visionary for temp root?

Is z4root the same as Visionary?
I tried to use it to get a temporary root on my Inspire. I installed z4root and installed SuperUser. Then I ran z4root and it needed SU permission but didn't get it. So I opened SU and it presented me with an upgrade pop-up where it loaded a file on the card and I was suppose to boot into hBoot and do something...I don't remember. Needless to say, backed out that and deleted that file from the SD so it didn't do anything upon a reboot. It was over my head.
You cant use visionary or z4 root on this phone. They dont work

You mean the thread from which you copied your post there and pasted to create the op of this here new thread?
It's simple... If you want to permanently root this phone, which by association means gaining s-Off, then the thread you reference is not the way to achieve it. It ain't that easy for this phone. It's not a Captivate one-click rootable phone.
If you don't want to permanently root this phone, but want to do "just a little bit of root stuff," the answer is... You want to permanently root this phone, or at least gain s-Off, in which case you might as well flash a rooted rom.
All of which points to...

No. This one. As I said, the one that's *stickied*.
What was so condescending about me pointing out that you started a new thread by pasting the same post you made in an already existing thread because you didn't get a reply quick enough?
Next time, can you at least have referenced the correct thread prior to accusing me of being patronizing?
Edit....
Unless of course you're trying to point at the link in mud's Sig, which *IS* what I referenced, in which case, what "right" thing did you do? Root? If so, then I'm not understanding what your asking.

[Q] ALL steps to root Motorola Xoom 4.0.4?

So I recently got a Xoom and would like to root it. I can easily search through forums and follow instructions, but I want to be sure on what I have to do. I've rooted and flashed several Android devices already, so I'm no newbie, but once I bricked an Atrix so since then I've always been super cautious.
So now.. how do I root and install CWM on the Xoom? It's on 4.0.4 OTA.
Do I have to unlock the bootloader first?
Specific references to threads and step by step instructions preferred. Thank you!

Yes, you will have to unlock first. There's a bit to set up first, but if you read the instructions and get everything you need set up in one place it's pretty easy. Also, it's actually hard to really brick a Xoom. A few have managed but it's not easy.
Try this guide...everything should still work fine, and it explains a lot

I also had a problem after unlocking. It unlocked fine, but then I couldn't flash CWM through fastboot. My problem was the Application Variable thing, I assume. What I did was go to the platform tools folder (which for me was C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools ). I held shift and right clicked Platform Tools, then pressed "open command window here" and then I flashed CWM through fastboot in that window. Just make sure the CWM image is in the Platform Tools folder, along with fastboot.exe.
If you have any issues with that, PM me and I'll try to help.
omg Frozen thank you so most for that post i literally had the same problem CWM would not flash till i did exactly what you said in the last post thank you soo much greatly appreciated
There is one VERY important piece that is left out of most threads.
The newest Xooms that were release overwrite CWM files upon reboot unless you take specific steps to make sure it doesn't... e.g.
have the update.zip you want to use preloaded on the sdcard via pc
or
use a usb with a otg and a version of CWM that can apply update.zip from the USB drive.
Also beware of threads that dont mention what version of the OS they are for. For example its very easy to root your device, but it be on an on 3.x OS and then the OS will update it to 4.04 on the next boot cycle, and wont give you a chance to pick your ROM update. As a result your device is not rooted at this point, and CWM is not installed because you didnt have root in time to move these files:
adb shell mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p.old /system/recovery-from-boot.p
adb shell mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.old /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
while in root.
Really sucks.
So in a nutshell those with the latest Xoom tablets that were released, must make sure you find a update.zip that is compatible with ICS 4.04 and then get it to your SDCARD or USB Drive via any method possible - and then flash the right CWM that supports what you want to do, then catch that as it reboots the very first time but pushing the down button and then up button of the volume controls, and then you can install the root (update.zip).... then if all is well you will be able to boot normally, and then go back and get into CWM and install the ROM of your delight.
Experts feel free to chime in so I don't mislead anyone. I wouldn't follow the above advice until an expert puts their AOK on it.

[Q] Verizon S3 i535 Rooting questions

Hi all,
I've just recently purchased a 16gig S3 and am wanting to root just so I can move some of the larger apps (certain games) off to the SDCard. Now, I've been doing some reading about unlocking the bootloader, rooting, etc. - do I have to unlock the bootloader to root the phone? Also, if I just root the phone (if it's possible) do I have to unroot it in order to get OTA updates? (I've been confused on that last question as some posts have talked about needing to unroot/flash back to stock and some have implied that one doesn't need to on a basic rooted phone).
I have no plans on installing custom roms at this point, just use some apps that require higher level privileged access; I just want to make sure I understand what I'm getting involved with here and what I may need to do in order to deal with future OTA updates.
Hi, Here's the breakdown as I understand it. Anyone else feel free to add or correct so I learn too. You can root your phone and keep the bootloader locked. Unlocking the bootloader would be a second step if you want to flash custom roms. If you are stock and rooted you could still receive an OTA from verizon, but this could cause you to lose root. Custom ROMs are tweaked so that you will still have root access. Even if you wanted to use a totally stock rom, it's best to wait for the devs to get a hold of it and flash it yourself so you don't lose root. There is no guarantee that devs will be able to root or unlock the bootloader on future OTA's that come from verizon.
That pretty much sums it up !

question about rooting
Not sure if this will be an easy question for anyone to answer or a difficult one but I am new to the S3, I had a thunderbolt before that was rooted for me by somebody else so this is my first attempt on my own to root a phone, and I have followed all the steps word for word in this guide --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875914&nocache=1 but when I get to the point where it asks you to open e-z unlock and hit unlock when the app opens "Fail! you're not rooted! View Noxious Ninja's wonderful rooting tool and guide." I have followed that guide and I followed the steps in that rooting tool verbatim but I'm still running into this issue. If anyone can help me out with this I'd appreciate it greatly. Do I need to roll back to a previous OS first in order to make this work? Right now I'm on 4.1 (forgive me if that is the reason this isn't working, I am new to this) so any help with my stupid questions will be greatly, greatly appreciated!

So I have started to follow the steps in that guide and I've got all the necessary files downloaded from the article. However I'm now having issues with Odin. I've been trying to flash the VRALEC bootchain and it keeps telling me that it has failed. I'm putting it into the PDA section, I've left Auto-reboot and F. Reset Time checked, and hit start. What am I doing wrong? Again, forgive me if this comes across as a stupid question.
