Is z4root the same as Visionary?
I tried to use it to get a temporary root on my Inspire. I installed z4root and installed SuperUser. Then I ran z4root and it needed SU permission but didn't get it. So I opened SU and it presented me with an upgrade pop-up where it loaded a file on the card and I was suppose to boot into hBoot and do something...I don't remember. Needless to say, backed out that and deleted that file from the SD so it didn't do anything upon a reboot. It was over my head.
You cant use visionary or z4 root on this phone. They dont work

So the guidance in this thread, including the link to Visionary, is in error?

You mean the thread from which you copied your post there and pasted to create the op of this here new thread?
It's simple... If you want to permanently root this phone, which by association means gaining s-Off, then the thread you reference is not the way to achieve it. It ain't that easy for this phone. It's not a Captivate one-click rootable phone.
If you don't want to permanently root this phone, but want to do "just a little bit of root stuff," the answer is... You want to permanently root this phone, or at least gain s-Off, in which case you might as well flash a rooted rom.
All of which points to...
Using one of two methods available, both linked in the stickied guide in the general section.

No. This one. As I said, the one that's *stickied*.
What was so condescending about me pointing out that you started a new thread by pasting the same post you made in an already existing thread because you didn't get a reply quick enough?
Next time, can you at least have referenced the correct thread prior to accusing me of being patronizing?
Edit....
Unless of course you're trying to point at the link in mud's Sig, which *IS* what I referenced, in which case, what "right" thing did you do? Root? If so, then I'm not understanding what your asking.

Are you asking if someone can take the update, add root and upload it or root it as it is running on the phone? Either way it's super easy.
If you already have root on your phone and you want a flashable version with root built in, go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
and follow the instructions to install the kitchen, extract the rom, root, and anything else you wanna add and build and flash it.
If you are looking at rooting it on the phone, go here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581869

Either way you should have used that handy "Search This Forum" button in the main threads page.

OK thanks for that.. I'm pretty savvy to the search feature. Been around the block a few times brotha.
I'm pretty sure since you have the answers you would know that I've tried that rooting method with won't work with the Cellcom Hero, the rooting method there you get the wrong bootloader error, the BL on the 1.6 hero is newer than the one you use in that rooting guide... I was unsuccessful in doing it.
And no, this phone/rom/carrier doesn't have root yet.
If it was something sooo easy I certainly would just do it.
What version of hboot does this phone ship with?
Have you tried that guide they linked to lately? That guide has been updated with a new method that should work on phones that shipped with 2.1
oh.. my bad dude. Didn't mean to be so hasty on my comments. We have had a few people posting pointless threads lately here.. This is rather odd though. Give us all the info on what's running on the phone and we can check out what we can do to resolve it.

Is anyone able to create a OneClickRoot for the Nexus S 4G? If not what is keeping someone from creating one?
This would be AWESOME! the unrooting process wasnt that difficult but it did take some time for me since i'm a noob at using the SNS 4G.
The rooting/unrooting sticky in the development section was extremely helpful.
Yeah.. It's really rather easy.

You for the step where you have to rename install-recovery.sh, otherwise CWM will keep getting removed everytime you reboot.
And, to anyone that is savvy with command line, yes this phone is super easy to root.
But oneclickroot's are nice to have for those less savvy folks out there.
No harm in having extra root methods, it would only help to grow the community.
It appears to be much easier than other phones. Look up the HTC Thunderbolt, for example.
Scary.

The NS4G doesn't have that file, CWM stays permanently so its a non issue
My NS4G had it. I was confused about why it kept booting into stock recovery until I read about renaming it. Anyhow, all I did was install Super Manager from the Market, grant it root access, and rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.bak. Pretty easy.
Not entirely true. I have it.
If someone can read and follow a guide then they can unlock, recovery, root this phone. Like someone said when I first started reading before doing anything, this phone is a very easy one to root and recovery and unlock (not in that order).
Just do it yo!
Just follow the directions. Look in the dev section. There's two stickies that talk about this stuff for the gsm and the cdma versions. If it were a snake, it would bite you! You can't miss it
terminal emulater
I have been rooting since the g1 and yes it appears to be extremely easy but it would be nice if some one could show the commands to do it through the terminal emulater. Plz someone help
Quite odd, if that is the case I wonder why some have it and some don't?
I know mine didn't.

I though that all of them did? Mine was in the 'etc' folder in the root partition of my phone.
See now this is odd.... I can definitely say I DO NOT have that file. What I'd love to know is why people with the same phone do
I'm interested in a one-click root not because it is easier, but because most of the one-click methods enable you to root without a data wipe. It is my understanding that there is currently no way to root the NS4g without completely wiping your data. Am I correct?

As far as I know, yes you are correct since it requires you to unlock the bootloader, but if you leave it unlocked then it shouldn't mess with any of your data (internal and sd partition).
I have the T-mo version and I don't have the install-recovery.sh anymore. I'm assuming because it was taken out in the custom rom that I'm using.
Just bought a Nexus s 4g today from sprint and got rid of my HTC EVO 4G which i had for almost a year and been rooted pretty much that whole time.
just a couple quick questions regarding the SNS.
Since this is internal memory and no sd card how do i add music bring all my pics and videos back from my computer? Only thing i could think of is download some sort of program. ( the one for evo was called "HTC SYNC")
And some other questions about root. Since i just bought it today and its at version 2.3.4 is it able to be rooted or am i locked out of it cause there last update?
i also saw the guide to root and saw that theres different versions ( like I90xxxx) how do i figure out which version nexus i have.
Thanks Guys, if i have anymore questions ill ask here.
It's just like any other phone. The "internal memory" is basically a integrated SD card that is irremovable.
Just plug your phone in via USB, mount USB storage. And copy paste it!
Or get Google Music (need to get invited to the beta).
It is a Nexus phone, it is a phone that provides a unlocked bootloader (you have to manually unlock it but its relatively easy). Nexus devices are encouraged to be rooted / played with.
The Sprint 4G version is not I9020A/I9020T/I9023

And provided the root guide link. Please read that, I shouldn't have to repeat this.
This phone is not Motorola or HTC. Those phones come with a locked bootloader which disallows you to tamper with rooting / flashing ROMs. To do that on those phones, you need a exploit.
Now this is what i meant by.. the Nexus devices come with a unlockable bootloader. Just follow the guide.
edit: Best root method? Uh.. rooting couldn't get any easier than a Nexus device. It's ENCOURAGED to be tampered with.
1. get drivers installed
2. go into bootloader mode
3. fastboot oem unlock
4. accept the terms
5. fastboot flash recovery whatever-recovery-name-is.img
6. go into CWM and flash su.zip
7. done you're stock rooted.
optional: download ROM & kernel, radio update (if there is one. I don't follow NS4G)

Yeah ok. The only edit I did was to make the job EASIER FOR YOU by linking the stickied thread. I didn't have to do it, but I did it because I wanted to be nice.
The term 'unlocked bootloader' as I mentioned (before the edit) explains it all.

You should double read things before you post. The only edit I did was to provide the link of the stickied thread to make the rooting process for YOU easier.
Nothing else was changed/removed. I included information saying that its a unlockable device, so the same rooting method will always work regardless of the Android verison before it was editted. And I edit my posts rather than double posting it because well, I believe its apart of the rules? And its apart of Forums 101. That's why the edit option is there.

I found the sticky with instructions about how to root the Infuse but, when I downloaded it, Kaspersky blocked it stating it contained a Trojan. I know there are false alarms off and on, but it makes me nervous, nevertheless. Also, I can't tell if it will work with Froyo 2.2.
Can someone confirm that the file is okay? It comes across as http://.....rageagainstthecage I thought it was odd since that's not the file name. It also crashed Kaspersky, which really did make me nervous.
The sticky is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081072
and the file is....
File Type: zip InfuseRootUnlock_v4.zip - [Click for QR Code] (1.58 MB, 13676 views)
Thank you for your help.
To gain root access to android, you have to basicly find a weakness in the code and exploit it. Rage against the cage is such an exploit.
People have been using this method for some time. If I'm wrong someone please correct me,. So it will trigger a good antivirus.

Well, after reading your reply, I went through pages and pages of posts on this sticky. I found rageagainstthecage in a few posts, so decided the file is okay. Thank you so much. I had read a lot of posts, but I didn't see any with rageagainstthecage in them, but then I found a couple. Thank you again.
Now, if I can just figure out how to root this thing, I'll be thrilled! Off to the root forum
Thank you again.
RATC is fairly old - most people here use SuperOneClick.
Do note that due to its nature, I believe a lot of antivirus programs treat SOC as a trojan.
The problem is that the same paths we use to get root are the same paths malware uses to get root. That's why a lot of the methods for rooting were closed in Gingerbread.
For Gingerbread, the usual way to grab root on Samsung devices is to flash a kernel that roots your device using an initramfs script.
I'm glad to hear you say that! I decided I'd try Super One Click because the other one just isn't doing anything. I think I'm supposed to type in a command, but I have no idea what command to type in. I used a Blackberry for 7 years, so the Android OS is new for me, well one month old, anyway. I'm still getting used to it. So glad I left Blackberry behind...just wish I'd done it sooner. <edit> Where can I find information about which version to download? Thank you again. I'm heading there now, but I just read something that makes me nervous. I should probably stop reading. I guess I'm a little gun shy since I don't know the system yet. "It IS a dangerous tool in the wrong hands...Exercise common sense"? What does "common sense" mean? "Fork bomb"? I'll need to Google that one. I know root gives the owner admin rights, but how it does it, I haven't a clue. I guess I have to do more reading...good grief
"rageagainstthecage is a root exploit via a fork bomb.
It IS a potentially malicious payload, BUT it is being used with owner's consent to root the phone.
The DreamDroid malware use exactly same payload - they are trojans, but this is a helpful tool.
It IS a dangerous tool in the wrong hands, but this is a root exploit, so you should exercise common sense and a little understanding of what it does and how it works.
That's a wonderful video. Thank you very much. Now, I'm just going to read more about how dangerous this can be so I can understand what I'm doing when I root. I'd like to exercise common sense, but I don't have any yet. I'd love to donate. I guess I should get a paypal account
The easiest way that I have found to root is found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
Just follow the instructions in the OP, and it's quick and easy. I trust it way more than super one click. Basically, the thread is about an odin package that takes you back to stock, and it just so happens to be pre rooted and has the modified recovery already installed. With super one click, you still have to install the modified recovery after rooting before flashing a rom, which I found to be cumbersome. If you use the ultimate unbrick, you get root and modified recovery in one easy package, and you can go right to flashing roms afterwards. Also, it's helpful to know how to use the ultimate unbrick just in case you end up bricking your device in the future.
Hope I helped. =]

The package referenced above returns you to "almost" stock - it's stock + root + recovery.
The other option is to use Odin or Heimdall to flash a custom kernel that injects root from the initramfs. For Froyo, I believe the Defuse kernels will do this.
For Gingerbread, any of the Gingerbread kernels will do this - but when you flash the kernel you'll also have to flash a Gingerbread ROM.

When you root it you won't lose anything on the phone. You have to wipe the phone when you flash a ROM, but rooting it will make it look exactly the same as it was before, but with more permissions and a superuser app. Follow the instructions in this thread.

You don't necessarily need it, but it allows you to make backups of the entire phone, and you need a custom recovery if you want to flash ROMs.
