So I recently got a Xoom and would like to root it. I can easily search through forums and follow instructions, but I want to be sure on what I have to do. I've rooted and flashed several Android devices already, so I'm no newbie, but once I bricked an Atrix so since then I've always been super cautious.
So now.. how do I root and install CWM on the Xoom? It's on 4.0.4 OTA.
Do I have to unlock the bootloader first?
Specific references to threads and step by step instructions preferred. Thank you!

Yes, you will have to unlock first. There's a bit to set up first, but if you read the instructions and get everything you need set up in one place it's pretty easy. Also, it's actually hard to really brick a Xoom. A few have managed but it's not easy.

I also had a problem after unlocking. It unlocked fine, but then I couldn't flash CWM through fastboot. My problem was the Application Variable thing, I assume. What I did was go to the platform tools folder (which for me was C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools ). I held shift and right clicked Platform Tools, then pressed "open command window here" and then I flashed CWM through fastboot in that window. Just make sure the CWM image is in the Platform Tools folder, along with fastboot.exe.

There is one VERY important piece that is left out of most threads.
The newest Xooms that were release overwrite CWM files upon reboot unless you take specific steps to make sure it doesn't... e.g.
have the update.zip you want to use preloaded on the sdcard via pc
or
use a usb with a otg and a version of CWM that can apply update.zip from the USB drive.
Also beware of threads that dont mention what version of the OS they are for. For example its very easy to root your device, but it be on an on 3.x OS and then the OS will update it to 4.04 on the next boot cycle, and wont give you a chance to pick your ROM update. As a result your device is not rooted at this point, and CWM is not installed because you didnt have root in time to move these files:
adb shell mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p.old /system/recovery-from-boot.p
adb shell mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.old /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
while in root.
Really sucks.
So in a nutshell those with the latest Xoom tablets that were released, must make sure you find a update.zip that is compatible with ICS 4.04 and then get it to your SDCARD or USB Drive via any method possible - and then flash the right CWM that supports what you want to do, then catch that as it reboots the very first time but pushing the down button and then up button of the volume controls, and then you can install the root (update.zip).... then if all is well you will be able to boot normally, and then go back and get into CWM and install the ROM of your delight.
Experts feel free to chime in so I don't mislead anyone. I wouldn't follow the above advice until an expert puts their AOK on it.

I am getting my new Thunderbolt tonight. After some research, I have decided for some specific reasons I would like to root this phone. I have never rooted a phone before and would like some direction.
The first step as I understand it is to back up the original operating system. How is that done? After that what's next? What I need is the wifi hotspot feature unlocked. Is there a specific root to accomplish this? What's been proven the best so far?
If someone wants to email me personally on this, feel free. I need to do this, but can't afford to brick a brand new phone.

Just follow those steps and you should be fine. You don't need to back up your entire operating system to root but you might want to back up your applications so you can easily reinstall them. After you follow the steps in that thread and are rooted just search for wireless tether in the market and it lets you tether for free.

I can second that. I literally just completed rooting my Thunderbolt that I received today. I followed the 10 step program from the thread (my wife thinks I need a 12 step program with my phone addiction ). It ran without a hitch just type (or cut and paste) exactly as written. I wanted to thank the OP in the development thread, but I need 10 posts so this is another one!
I believe what you've heard about backing up the original operating system is what you do right after you've rooted before you begin flashing custom roms and kernels which is the main reason you root in the first place. There is plenty of info but here's a little list.
1. Follow the rooting thread that You posted above me (Who's on first? What's on second?)
2. Install Rom Manager (RM).
3. Launch Rom manager and install clockwork recovery(first option on RM)
4. Second option on RM is boot into recovery.
5. Once in recovery go into Backup /Restor
6. Choose Backup - This is called a Nandroid Backup and is a snapshot of your phone in it's current state. It saves the backup onto the phone under /clockworkmod/backup place a copy of the backup on your computer for safe keeping and leave the copy on your phone in case of worries.
That should get you started.

I just rooted my thunderbolt last night using the easyroot method and didn't run into any major issues. Had to rerun a couple steps, but nothing more than that.
I'm now running BAMF-Remix 1.5 with the radio upate and status bar clock removed.
I literally had zero experience in regards to this and am still confused by some of the terminology, so if I can do it, I have no doubt you should be able to accomplish rooting your phone!

I would suggest using the procedure that jcase posted. It is simple, easy, and you will gain some valuable knowledge of adb which could be useful to you in the future. The process is simple, just copy and paste the commands. The adb knowledge will definitely help you down the road, even though it is minor. Also any problems can be traced to a step. With a one click process it is tough to determine where an issue went wrong.

Easier said than done coming from someone who has been around for a while. I couldn't even figure out how to get adb installed... I installed the Android SDK and had to install the Java SDK but I was still clueless how to actually get adb going... I downloaded the ADB+Drivers for 64bit which had the adb.exe but obviously this can't be ran standalone. So being a complete ignorant fool, is the reason I ended up opting for the easyroot method. That being said, I did intially try for the manual method lol.
I knew nothing about rooting and followed the steps after not being able to do the quick root. AND learned a lot about adb. Good Luck
Your no fool. Alot of the adb setup videos and tutorials are old. It change the execute file from the "tools" directory to "platform-tools" directory. That did stump me since i had to reset up adb on a new computer. I have not been around that long, just did alot of reading, and came from the incredible forum where i turned into a flash junkie with alot of help.

after you are done rooting deffinately flash clockworkmod recovery and flash a custom rom. I trouble getting root to stay without a custom rom.
In rom manager it gives me an option to flash cwm. What does it do when I flash clockwork recovery?

Rooting my TB was a pain but it was well worth it. Hopefully there is a faster, easier method now.
Battery life on my rooted TB with leankernel is comparable to what my battery was on my Droid x, if not better

Hi, I just registered on this forum hoping to learn the ins and outs of rooting. Been doing a lil research reading a couple of sites on the topic. Bear with me, but I feel like a complete noob cause a lot of the language is sailing straight over my head. I think I have the gist of it, but it seems a lot of the information are scattered and there's a lot of different ways to root.
I just recently got the Nexus S (Sprint's 4G version) and I have been reading some of the ROMs aren't compatible with the 4G version yet. This has me a little worried...would rooting the phone be any different since its a 4G model? I really don't want to brick my phone on my first try. Is there a comprehensive guide with easy step by step instructions on how to root this particular version of the phone?
I do agree the 4G version needs its own tab to prevent confusion since a lot of the guides here are for the regular Nexus S. Many thanks in advance.
If you look in the developers section there is a sticky at the top for the Sprint variant of the Nexus S. In it there are rooting instructions and such.

It's actually quite hard to brick the Nexus devices. The gist of it is as follows:
Boot into fastboot (hold pwr up and turn the phone one).
Fastboot oem unlock to unlock the device (this wipes)
Install a custom recovery via fastboot (fastboot flash recovery downloaded-image.img)
flash the su binary package via recovery
This is the same process for all variants of the phone - there's nothing 4G specific about it other than don't try to use an old version of CWM (the i9023 can't either).

The only way you are going to brick your device is:
- Flashing a GSM radio to your CDMA device
- Pulling the battery DURING a radio flash
- Using ODIN and flashing a full rom package not meant for your device.

I've actually seen people unbrick after flashing the wrong radio... LOL pretty amazing.
I could really use some help please. Im using these guides to root and I've gotten the bootloader unlocked, but when I get to the part where I flash CWM recovery in the command prompt, I get a message that says:
cannot load recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo
That is the file they said to download, and I inserted it into the tools section of android sdk folder. Any ideas? The unlock bootloader command worked perfectly, but Im getting stuck at this step.
EDIT: I figured out my problem. I wasn't placing the recovery file in the Platform-tools folder, I was putting it into the regular tools folder. I have my moments.

These are pretty great instructions, especially the link. Since Sprint shipped with version 2.3.4 of Android with the build GRJ22, do the rooting instructions still work for our model?

Which method did you use? I'm reading a lot about bootloader being unlocked/locked and some methods requiring a backup and some without. This really adds to the confusion. Then there's a Superboot method which seems a lot easier but it doesn't seem to have the GRJ22 model. I'm pretty sure its easy once I get to it, but the overwhelming information makes it extremely difficult to follow lol. Information overload.

Love the Xoom but would like to be able to read-write micro-SD and have better USB access to external storage and devices (and tinker with OC, etc). I find instructions for various configurations, but not mine. The forum help looks terrific but I would like to start down the correct path. Can anyone point me to a proven method for my configuration (US 3G 3.2 stock)?

I have the WI-FI only version of the HJT85B and I used the root Guide found here -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760 --
it was pretty straight forwards and as long as you do ever step as he says, it comes out exactly like it should (I am typing on it now and I have only had one problem that was fixed by using Rom Manager [Clockwork] Permisson fix, rebooted the tablet and wala everythign is hunky dorry and I got my SDcard permisson fixer at -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173195 -- have yet to have any troubles with that APK I hope that I have helped you out and good luck to rooting your xoom! Thanks. I will read and reread (several times) before attempting. Probably won't get to it until this weekend. I'm a bit anxious about using the wifi instructions on a three-G. We'll see what happens...
I'll go out on a limb here and add that YD, may be like myself, I read the instructions tonight, I'm in the same boat, but when I say I'm a Virg. rooter, I mean that I'm I'm totally new to Linux/android and the instructions still don't make sense.
Sooo, is there a dummy version that fills in some of the little details? What I got out of the post was that all the downloads go on your laptop or desktop and after setting things up on ur PC you attach ur xoom via USB? That really is the extent of my understanding.

I'm not much more experienced than you virgins, but I have rooted my xoom and have uploaded a different rom. It was a lot of trial and error. Mostly error. I'd be happy to talk to either of you on google talk and walk you through it if you have any questions. Again I'm not a pro, but some of the instructions are intimidating for the first-timers, and maybe I can help make some sense to it. My gtalk is radi0chik. the 0 is a zero.

If you already rooted I followed the instructions under the header "You Must Use this nandroid backup if you are running a non stock Rom. This is already Rooted"
All you're doing there is upgrading the recovery then restoring a backup for 3.2 that is rooted. No wipe needed. It just restores the files you need to be on 3.2. Once I was done it stopped nagging me to do the 3.2 update & said I was up to date.

I had a few minor issues that I was able to resolve without too much difficulty (slow and steady). I see at least one other poster on that thread had a similar issue.

I found a solution but I wasn't able to post it on that thread (Developer's) because I am a newb. Here's what worked for me. After receiving the same error message (several times), I typed this in at the command prompt:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
THEN I continued with the tutorial from where I had been stuck::
fastboot flash boot 3Grootboot.img
It was smooth sailing the rest of the way.

From what I can figure I can either Flash the full rom to 2.3.6 and wait for the update to hit, or I can fastboot an image to 2.3.6 or 4.0.4.
What I need to know is which option would be easier for a noob and can you help me find a guide to complete the process. So far the best thing I have found is the guide on android addicted.
Even though it may seem pretty comprehensive to some of you, to a complete noob like myself it is very confusing. For example when it says to download the Android usb / adb driver it doesn't really say what to do with it. And the very next step it shows 2 files that it didn't tell me to dl and basically loses me.
Can anyone tell me what is the easiest way to go about this and what exactly I need to do.

No need to keep repeating the four letter word (noob). We've all been there before. My suggestion to you is of course the safest route for any beginner: find the OTA update.zip for 2.3.6 and wait for the phone to prompt you for the ICS update. And while you're enjoying your stock ICS experience, start reading up on bootloader unlocking, rooting and using custom kernel and ROMs so you can make full use of your Google phone.

I got mine back from repair today, and of course, they replaced the perfectly working 4.0.4 with a 2.3.6. The phone automatically started downloading the update a mere minute after booting, so what I'm stumped on is why yours didn't automagically update itself right away.
Maybe you could force an update check by typing *#*#2432546#*#* into the dialer, then checking the System Updates point inside About Phone.
Unlocking and flashing custom ROMs can be fraught with problems, and are not exactly for the faint of heart, given that there is no one-click executable to flash new ROMs like there was for Windows Mobile (my old phone was/is an HTC Universal, running Windows Mobile 6.5. A real fossil...). There are many guides on the forum, most of them stickied, be sure to chew through them, make backups, and pray to your chosen deity when you start typing in ADB
drivers are a HUGE pain. If you do this while running a linux distro (I run ubuntu) you don't need drivers. they are native with linux.
Anyways Linux is great and you should stop using winblows.

I used the same Method for My GT-I9020T (T-Mobile)
I was on 2.3.6. A month after my wifes phone got the OTA to 4.0.4 I still was on 2.3.6.
I followed the steps in the thread above and did the Up-Grade Myself.
No rooting, No Boot loader un-locking, From stock recovery.
Worked perfectly for me.
Read through that thread above to see what other AT&T users said about this.

Hi everyone
First off I would like to thank everyone who contributes on this board, I have been lurking for quite awhile even though I dont have any android devices, the reading is very interesting.
I have just got my first android device today delivered from BH Photo (I am in Australia) and have charged and powered it up. I have been reading on the forums about rooting and then unlocking. The android version appears to be 4.0.3 (ICS).
My questions are these:
Should I root this device and unlock the bootloader with ICS, then install TWRP and make a backup of it. Once this is done then update to JB? The firmware of the tablet is (I think this is right) IM74K:US_epad_9.4.5.26-20120720 and the kernel is 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1
or
Update the device to JB then root it, but Im a bit confused with the unlocking part here what program is used to unlock the bootloader? Is it the Asus one? Also with rooting programs which one is more commonly used for both ICS and JB? Can I apply a manual update of JB using the Ausrtalian version instead of the US one.
Sorry for all the noob questions. I have read the index and after reading it still had some questions.

Welcome to the Community!
There are a few on-going threads regarding this same topic. You might want to read those and make sure you understand the lingo/jargon being used (like: fastboot, bootloader, Recovery, adb. etc) as well as what it's for before you start your hacking.
Some things to keep in mind
Currently to have Root access in JB, you need to get root in ICS then use OTA Keeper to maintain Root for JB update.
The Bootloader unlocker tool is from ASUS and needs to communicate with ASUS servers for it to unlock.
Unlocking the bootloader will void your warrenty. Make sure you have a good device before you do it.
You have a version of tablet (9.4.5.26) that is able to use NVFlash that can help recover your tablet during a soft brick.
You should use an update that is appropriate for your device. If it comes with US, stay with US. Installing an update for a different region might not cause problems but there is no guarantee. Best to avoid the possibility by staying with the region it comes with.
For some reading material, I think that my blog post might help give you some additional details. However, I highly suggest that it be used for research only until you are aware of exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Remember to ask questions if things are confusing or if you are wondering what needs to be done next. 'Tis better to ask and be delayed than to be over-eager and bricked.

I just got my TF700 last week and I wanted cleanrom on it and this is the order of stuff I did:
1. Unlocked bootloader
2. Nvflash setup
3. Installed TWRP
4. Flashed official Asus update
5. I lost TWRP so I installed it again
6. Flashed cleanrom
Probably not the most efficient way, but it was easy to do and didn't take too long.

It's the most efficient way.
I have nothing to add except for the remark that NvFlash is key -- GET IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
I'm not even kidding here. It gives you 100% flexibility in doing whatever you wish (up- as well as downgrading, even the bootloader!) and provides a key benefit in recovering your device when that whale-sized piece of excrement hits the large ventilator running at top speed.
Thanks to everyone that has replied to my post. I have successfully rooted the tablet and unlocked the bootloader. Before I do anything else Im going to run NVflash and back it up. I have a quick question though. I have download NVFlash to my computer and extracted it. Do I need to copy it across to the tablet and then enter fastboot? I havent got an extenal sd card will it save the images to the tablet's hard drive?

i watched it before i actually did it once or twice to make sure i know what to do. you don't need an external sd card. following the fastboot steps will pull the files that you need onto the internal one in a folder
Last night I used NVFlash to make backup of the tablet. A big thank you to alienedd as I followed his blog and also the guide from androidmobi team and managed to get the img files done. Is there anyway to test bar for wiping the tablet?
Now all I have left to do is install OTA RootKeeper and TWRP, back up the existing tablet and then flash a custom ROM (Im thinking cleanrom)
You don't need OTA Rootkeeper anymore because you have unlocked you're bootloader. And custom roms like Cleanrom are already pre-rooted so after flashing the cleanrom you will have root anyway.
