[Q] Skype on android with < 600Mhz - General Questions and Answers

As per title, one requisite of Skype is at least 600Mhz processor, which my Alcatel 890d doesn’t have.
I’ve found a list of older versions
Skype 2.6.0.75
Skype 2.1.0.46
Skype 2.0.0.47
Skype 2.0.0.45
Skype 2.0.0.43
Skype 1.0.0.984
Skype 1.0.0.983
Skype 1.0.0.831
Skype 1.0.0.659
Skype 1.0.0.614
Skype 1.0.0.538
Do you know if any of this has lower requisites? Or a third party app that let you use Skype?
Thank you very much.

Just install it on your device, it will work with lags, but will work.

I’ve tried already but it stops at the log in screen: when I press the button to log in a message says that Skype crashed and bounce me back to the log in screen

Are you sure that it is due to CPU frequency? Have you flashed custom rom's, installed custom kernels etc?

Yes, I'm fairly sure, I’ve read that somewhere on Skype website. There's nothing custom on the phone, I've bought it a couple of days ago and I’ve just installed a few apps.

So, you should try previous versions of Skype by yourself.

Will do. Thanks

Skype and Froyo on 3 mobile

Hi does anyone have a solution to make Skype work on Froyo 2.2 especially on 3 mobile?
YES!!! I've just discovered it.
Firstly, I assume you're using a "3" mobile in the UK, on Android 2.1 and you have it working. People don't seem to be having any problems with Skype on 3 and Android 2.1
Now, go to the Android Market and search for a program called "My Backup" by Rerware LLC. There is a free 30 day trial.
Once it's download and installed, skip past the register for online storage part (if you want) and choose the "Backup", then "Applications" option. Choose to put it on your storage card and choose APK+data. You may get an error saying it can't find market data. Don't worry.
Now, just update your phone to Android 2.2 Froyo, install "My Backup" again and choose the "Restore" option.
For some reason this restored version works perfectly on Froyo. I can only assume some required certificate gets copied over too.
The above was done on a rooted 3-branded Desire running 2.1. I'm now running Froyo with Skype.
SKYPE-FROYO official update on 3 Mobile:
Hey Guys
we could also simply go to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=388449&d=1282819614
download the updated three mobile file APK file which runs perfectly on Android Froyo, Release Number:
3UKSkype_0.10.0.15_hutch_live
and that works fine straight out of the box to, just released this morning by Three mobile and all official and like

strange, I installed skype on 3 ... but it only runs on mobile data connection ... the WiFi must be off in order to run it ...
P.S. yes, I read that this is only a mobile data app ... sorry for the question
RE: 3 Mobile, Skype, Froyo Update:
Hi There,
Don't worry common question, 3 Mobile was one of the few networks to support Skype across most of it handsets, however in order to do this they had to reach a few compromises.
The truth is although we now have quite a lot of very powerful smart phone, there are still a lot of lower end handsets that are no where near powerful enough to run a full Skype installation, to circumvent this problem and to allow Skype to be used on virtually any handset, 3 Mobile uses a Skype branded version of iSkoot software, which does not use the mobile data or wifi.
When a skype call is initiated it simply dial a normal UK based GSM access number which is totally free on to all three customers which then connects you to the Skype client you are calling. Because this is GSM the Call quality is also very stable and almost guaranteed, as there is more GSM coverage than 3G.
This is a very good solution, and allows you to have Skype calls where ordinarily you would not. On my old Nokia E72, I had both the 3 Mobile client and the official Skype Client running, and used each appropriately, as required, which was a fantastic solution but unfortunately there is not official Skype client for Android, yet, but one is slated for release in October of this year, (crossed fingers), if this is the case then we will all have the Mobile phone Nirvana that is having the flexibility of having both clients on you handset at once.
Having the official client saved my bacon in Nairobi Airport, when we got stranded there because of the volcano, I closed down the 3 client and used the Official Symbian client through the airports WiFi network which worked really well and even allowed me to use my London based 020 Skype in number, carried on business as if nothing had happened.
So yes it has a few limitations but to reliably be able to call Skype contacts have skype chats and make cheap international calls using your Skype Credit far out-weys any of these.
I hope this has served to give you a brief explanation about the hows and whys of the 3 Mobile Skype service. Have a great bank holiday weekend.
Kind Regards and Best Wishes - Ashe Medforth.

so does this fix work???? on 2.2
The 0.15 application works on Froyo 2.2
Hi you don't need this fix now as I explained previously just download the new 0.15 application and it works straight out of the box on Froyo, now need to do anything.
Hope this finally clears this up,
Kind Regards - Ashe.

Finally! Was gutted when skype stopped working.
Thanks for the link

Is there anyway to get this working on a non "3" net work
I don't think so because 3UK is the only network who allows you to use Skype over data connection, besides O2, I heard that they have Skype as well....

Google Voice on GB

EDIT: Mods, please move this to the main Charge forum, accidentally put this thread in the wrong place.
Hey all,
Of the people who use Google Voice, what have your experiences been? I have used every variant of the leaked GB ROMs available as of this point, 8:40PM MT, and GV won't work with any of them. Having GV installed, it will not load up my account when I select my main Google account on setup. Going back to any Froyo ROM it will work fine but GB is no-go. I have heard some people saying it won't work and other saying it works fine.
GV is my main method of SMS since I have my vzw SMS turned off and blocked so if I run a GB ROM, I get no SMS. I have installed GV both from Titanium and directly from the market with no luck. Has anybody figured out a fix for this? I know this is all still very beta and it could just be a flaw in the leak but I really would love to have some Netflix.
- Glitch
P.S. Yes, I have wiped cache and dalvik and still nothing.
In the same boat
I am in the same boat - 100% GV SMS realiant (no VZW SMS at all) and have had the same issues. I've tried installing from TB, the Market... everything I could think of and haven't had any luck. Because of this, and the fact that one of the other apps I use daily (VZ FiOS TV Remote Control App) does'nt work, I think I am going to be headed back to Froyo until the official release comes out.

Videocalls in ours i9003. Together we can. (New beta/modded version of Fring)

Hi guys,
As you know, our i9003 is not able to make video calls (3G or wifi). In Gingerbread doesn't work in any app, and only Tango and only in Froyo. As anyone port gtalk with video calling for our devices? Or mod some app like Skype, Tango, Fring or Ooovo to have video calls?
For a long time I have contacted a lot with the support of Tango, Fring and ooVoo. I have sent videos, many logs showing the issue, all they have asked me. But they aren't able to fix the issue. Even look at ooVoo email:
"Hi Unkalo,
Due to Ongoing Problems With This device is going to be it removed from the market. I'm sorry We Were Unable to get it working for you.
ooVoo is also available on PC and Mac, I hope you can join us there.
Best,
Roberta "
No comment. Incredible, Instead to try to fix the issue, they remove the app from our market...
Please help, together we can do it.
Yes developers please add this feature , I just waiting patiently for this feature.
I have 3 android devices and I researched and found not too many phones have this feature like s2 or sensation, none of android devices can full utilize both cameras i.e. video call over 3g and video gtalk.
We have 3g video call even I9000 dont have this feature but only thing lack is gtalk video chat.
Please develop video gtalk app.
Please..........

Video call over 3g surely works on our phone I had tested long ago on froyo 2.2.1 (xxkb3)
On wifi using VOIP it does not work so basically skype/gtalk cant be used unless they are modified for our phone.
With wifi, only works Tango and only in Froyo 100 % tested all the options. I tried mods of Skype, and doesn't work, always black screen in ginger.
Same with me.. Skype, Yahoo, Paltalk video class not working on I9003 Gingerbread,
i can see others. but they cant see me. just black screen on skype.. but. in Yahoo during video calls on Device gets reboot.. In Paltalk. video works in room. but if auto rotate is ON . itz just crashing..
how can we get video class fixed on our device ? lets shout on skype n Yahoo or to Samsung ?
thanks
Vedio call by GSM operater?
Can any body tell me that is there any problem with Video call by GSM operator with GT-9003 (in both Froyo and GB)?

@techindia the problem isn't videocalling by GSM operator, the problem is to make "free" videocalls using WIFI or 3G. All the apps (Gtalk, Skype, Fring, Tango, ...) have problems with our front cam (black screens, green flickering, rotation and zoom issue,..)
In the last days, I have been working with Fring and Tango support. They send to me mods of Frings and Tango, and I reported them the results, and I sent them logs, videos, and screen captures showing the issue, and they sent me a new version, I tried, and started over with logs, videos, screenn captures ...
Today, the results are:
Tango: In Froyo Ok. In gingerbread, fixed black screen, fixed rotation issue, and tango developers are working on zoom issue and audio issue.
Fring: In Froyo I think that green flickering issue, but I haven't been able to prove because I'm on Ginger. In Gingerbread: Fixed black screen, fixed rotation issue, fixed upside down issue, and fixed zoom issue. In Gingerbread after fix rotation and zoom, appears green flickering again. Fring developers are working to fix it. But they are working on it, and that's good news for our i9003, as developers tend to ignore our device.
Skype and oovoo. KO in Gingerbread (black screen) and KO in Froyo (green flickering).
Gtalk video: KO. If someone could carry a gtalk mod to our devices, would be the best of news.
I shall tell you of new results.
To see what's new today
Fring support sent to me this:
"Hi.
Our developers suspect it's a device driver issue or memory issue.
We'll keep Investigating .. I hope we find something.
I really want to thank you for your Enthusiasm and help, Could we have got so far Without it. "
Drivers or memory problem ....??
In addition, ooVoo, launched yesterday a new update, I've tried a video call to PC (I couldn't try with another i9003) and for the first time, the video works perfectly! Only with the audio I have a problem, that my voice is very very distorted ... You can try oovoo and report here your results. I'm ginger, would be nice if someone with Froyo can tell us how it goes.
Come on guys!
Does skype video call works ?
New mail from Fring support:
"The problem is we don't have the device here…
I hope that the build I'll send you (I don't have an ETA yet, the devs are on it) will reveal the correct resolution.
So far we tried 640*480 that caused the zoom issue and 320*240 that caused the flicker issue."
Anyone know how to solve the problem? Some developer can help to solve this problem with our i9003?
I really like where this is going. With online video chat our device will truly be complete.
Hi Guys,
Fring support send to me a new version, and no green flickering, no audio issue and no rotation issue, only zoom issue. Fring uses 640x480 resolution (native resolution of front cam), with 320x240 no zoom issue but appears green flickering. We can almost make video calls. I show a picture:
But using the camera's native app, using the front camera on froyo, the preview image was similar to when there is green flickering at Fing (320x240):
but after upgrading to gingerbread, the preview shows different, like full screen . I send you pictures so you can get an idea:
I think that here comes the problem of zoom, can be caused by this.
This week will prove this version of fring with my girlfriend (she has a Froyo i9003) and see how it works.
But if successful, someone could port drivers or libs of Froyo, to work well in gingerbread?Any developer could try that?
What do you think about it?
Please respond any developer
After upgrading 9003 (European, XXKPN) in GB, I observed that Hardwar H.264 decoder crash some time and that time I even cannot see anything in camera application.
Do any one face same problem? I need to restart mobile for that.
@Unkalo: could you please load that Mod for fring.
I am on KPQ, and camera app work well, I think you need reflash twice.
This version of fring generates a fring.log constantly and it's occupy much space on the sdcard, for this reason it is best to wait to take out a new release on the market soon.
well i got "XXKPN" via Kies, so i can not reflash ones again.
is there any way to reflash it?
Via odin... Please read this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133787
You only need download XXKPQ (lastest european 2.3.6 official fw):

Looks very promising It would be awesome if you could upload the apks so that we could test it and give you our feedback as well
Ok, here you have, but beware the fring.log, it is getting bigger and bigger. Can you tell me how it works in Froyo?, in ginger only zoom issue, but and in Froyo? Feedback please.
If you want you can add me as Fring friend, my fring user id is: unkalo

No one has tried this new version?
With the new version of ooVoo, at in gingerbread, video usually works well (if you have black screen, switch off cameras and it will works well, and if not send picture, hang up video call and call again), the only problem is with the audio, is heard very distorted and not understand anything. To fix it, up or down the volume of the call volume using the physical keys on the device, and that will fix the audio issue.
For now is the best we have so far, almost 100% functional.
PD: not always works well, have many bugs, this version of oovoo isn't estable for our i9003

Skype on a cheap tablet running 2.2, how?

I'm trying to get Skype running on a cheap Chinese 7 inch tablet (on 2.2 Froyo) for a friend and obviously it has no access to the Play Shop (formerly Android Market).
I've tried quite a few .apk's but the furthest I can get is where it lets me enter login details with my Skype account but then hangs trying to log in.
Has anyone ever managed to get Skype running on one of these cheap tablets or is it not possible?
I believe for front facing camera support, you need android 2.3 or later. Plus the processor of most of these cheap tablets don't support most apps, I read.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
It looks like you tried sideloading skype .apk's but all of them hang.
Your best option would be to try flashing a custom ROM that has market support (CM7.2 or CM9 for example) and try Skype from there.

You can try running "fring" which will link to skype among others...not sure if it does video but it does sound.

Google Talk with Voice and/or Video chat

I'm a little bit confused since google talk is supposed to work with video if you have Android 2.3.4 and Google Talk 1.3.
Well, the Chacha has Android 2.3.5 and also Google Talk 1.3 but can't even do voice chats with it.
So what's the problem, and is it possible to update this?
Most of the Google-Talk versions you could install with CWM are offline, and I don't think that this is a good idea anyway, because the result when I tried this was just a chaos.
Seems that Video Talk is not working with Arm v6 Processors. And stupidly Google connected voice talk to video talk (on the phones) which doesn't make any sense. So voice talk is not possible either.
I was able to get the video version to work on the chacha, but since the libtalk_jni.so doesn't seem to be compiled for arm v6, the video chat won't work anyway.
So bad news for everyone who is interested: No need to try unless we have a working libtalk_jni.so.
