Hi Guys,
Slightly odd request. I'm planning on making a regular tech vlog/podcast and I definitely want to review android apps. I want the production level of this show to be high so I don't want to be filming my phone.
I've looked into using Android Screencast but the framerate is really low and almost unusable for review/how-to purposes. A recent post by Lifehacker showed how to run a emulated version of Android with market enabled. The latest version is only 1.6 however. I'd like to be able to review any android app so 2.1 is a must.
Does anyone know of a way I can run 2.1 with Market enabled whether this is through the standard SDK or something like virtualbox. SDK files or ROMs would be fine just as long as I can install apps and review them.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 Professional so a solution for either would be great.
Many Thanks
Grinboy
BUMP.
Could someone at least explain why this isn't possible?
Ok last bump and then I'll let this die. Can't believe no one has an answer.

I too would like to know this... I have been searching for a while tonight trying to find the answer (that's how I found this thread), but the only information I can find says to use the system.img file from a nandroid backup, but I haven't been able to make that work... It just boots to the android screen with the blinking cursor
only 1.6 for this time that can using market
Maybe if you grab some 2.1 firmware (nexus one, desire, G1 CM 5.0, etc) and put Vending.apk into your original system.img then, MAYBE, will be the Market application.
Why don't you invest in an HD camera and place it over your phone. Tons of professional sites do that. It gives it a more hands-on feel, IMO

Hi all, i'd like to buy a chinese android based tablet (price should be around 100€), i'd like to ask you which one do you suggest to buy.
I've seen one from my friend and i liked it, i didn't remember the model but i tought that the android market was not the official one, can it be? If so, there's any way i can install it? Or i can install other apps without the market?
Another question, are these upgradable? I thought that the Android inside the tablet was pretty old (1.6 maybe), this was not a problem in everyday use, but i'm a maniac and i like to have everything up to date, if i can.
Please let me know
Just bought the TechPad Android Tablet
I guess we'll see what can be done with these. I don't need an ereader so I am looking for this to be an extension of my android phone, GPS - browser - etc. I should receive it by the 9-25-10
It has OS 1.6 Android 7 Inch Tablet with a 800MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM, 1Gb ROM, WiFi, and the Google Android Marketplace.

Look at this: http://www.slatedroid.com/
There are many store where you can buy that table you can do your own research on the web so you can select the right store that will meet your budget.
@superchaos
so did you get the 7 inch techpad unit yet? if so how is it?
I did.
It is not replacing my phone, I seem to be able to see a lot of the apps in the market but I am unable to download them. It just gets stuck at the starting download screen. Wifi connects really well and has a great connection.
Some apps just won't install like google earth, Google sky map, Swype doesn't recognize the device, etc.
The touch screen is kind of weak and you really have to press to get it to get the typing to work. The system files are accessible and there is a "su" folder. I am not real good at getting into anything. It looks to me like it is rooted but I have not figured out how to get into a recovery mode.
I have tried to connect it to the SDK from google and it does not recognize the device. If anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions.
Market issue is likely just Google servers. Happens all the time.
You need to test root by running an app like titanium backup which needs root, and see if it works.
For recovery, you would only get a stock one, and I doubt you will get a custom one online if the device is not common.
Is USB debugging enabled for adb, and have you looked for it in device manager to see its hardware id and check if the id is listed in the adb driver list?
@superchaos
judging from the price the screen probably is not capacitive type but resistive. how's the battery holding? how long does it last before you have to recharge? does it look like it's upgradable to android 2.2?
thanks.

It doesn't seem to be rooted. To get the adb shell to recognize the device and to get Dalvik Debug Monitor to see the device, I followed the instructions here rbgrn.net/content/399-how-to-get-archos-5-internet-tablet-adb-working-on-x64-windows
I used HiDROID instead of Archos5 and the device id is USB\VID_18D1&PID_0002&MI_01
I run winXP not win7 and this worked. Screen capture works too. The programs I installed that require root just force close.

The screen could be a lot better. It is like there is a film on top of the screen for touch capabilities. The battery holds really well unless you are watching videos. 4-5 hours of constant use. You can leave it plugged in too. I am hoping it is upgradeable. The OS is built for a phone.
How do I get a list of hardware devices in the phone? Not just the specs on the pamphlet but actual hardware names/mfg's?
Hi, i have a acer aspire d255 which has a dual boot with android 1.6, i can download apps and they work but some like angry birds wont install as its 1.6.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get 1.6 upgraded to 2.1?
any ideas?
here is froyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872186&highlight=netbook
Acer D255
I'm also quite keen on any info or hacks for this device. I've got a Acer One D255
with Android 1.6 I barely ever boot into it but has the potential of being quite useful. I'm also quite annoyed there
isn't a market app as this is 95% of android usability, without it there doesn't seem to be much you can do with it.
So what I'm asking is.....
how do I upgrade this version of android.
or how do I install the Market app.
or any other method of getting apps on it.
I'll be keeping a close look at the link posted above, as this may provide some level of success too.
hi so far the only way i have found is to use appstore or apk files installed with a file manager
i have the d255 been playing with it for a few days now the android is1.6 ot the best in the world but it works the down side is there is no market but i can run apps on it if i insall the apk file and it runs some that my wildfire cant it will run live wallpapersand the wifi works with no probs
so what i was woundering is there anybody working on making this better?
and is there anything the rest of use who have the d255 can do to help
thanks
phil
What kind of apps have u been able to install? I tried installing ADW launcher (the only app I tried) but it gave an error parsing the package.
Is the D255 just running the "ordinary" phone android 1.6?
So I've been playing around with it today and I found that you can install .apks that you normally find in the market. I assumed the version running on here was 1.6. I managed to install ADW launcher (gives much more customization) and a lot of other apps. Right now I am going to try installing the Gapps found here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps
I also found that the App Center found on AndoidPIT works and allows you to download apps and install them (at least the one app that I clicked on ). Things like astro and Root Explorer also work. I pulled most of these apps from my phone and installed them and most of them work fine.
It's not android 2.1 (or 2.2 or 2.3 ) but it does make the whole thing a lot more usable.
EDIT: I just read the post above and people already managed to do the same I figured I would give my 2 cents anyway.
Hi all,
I have just got my Viewsonic VPAD 10 and was a bit sad when I saw that market wasn't on.
So anyone fixed market on a VPAD 10? Can it be done in the same way as in the G-Tablets?
/M
Is that the one that dual boots windows and android 1.6?
According to the Viewsonic products page it is... 1.66GHz Atom, dual boots Windows 7 & Android 1.6...
be interesting to hear batt runtime and quadrant score...
As to market, I suppose that you could use adb push to get the market app on there and then try the market "fix" in the dev forum... worth a shot anyways...
(It's the one that Sears initially mis-labelled the gTab as...)
As we tried it for a couple of days now it seems like it runs for aprox 5-6 hours on WiFi
Haven't tried with the 3g yet but it will come
Is it the "Full market (improved market fix) on G Tablet", "The Viewsonic G Tablet Super Thread (w/Market, Gmail, and Maps!)" or which thread do you mean
/M
I'd try starting out with low expectations, and go with "The Viewsonic G Tablet Super Thread (w/Market, Gmail, and Maps!)"...
what it essentially entails is getting market installed, running it(setup), try to download(IIRC), the back to home...
at that point you can try the Titanium Backup method(never worked properly for me as I had to do what follows) or
1. go into setting and find the section that lists running apps
2. find market, clear data/cache, force close(quit) it
3. find Google Services Framework, clear data/cache, force close it
4. run market
5. get error -> reboot
6. no error, back through 1-5 again
When it reboots IF it works, you should see more apps in market, but you're not going to see all of them as the VPAD 10 is running a fairly old version of Android as it's the last one to support x86 completely...
Now IF ALL of that works and gets you market, you COULD try to do the extended market "fix" to see if it lets you see any additional apps...
(I picked up the above steps by researching the thread from which the "fix" originated for a different device and version of Android(2.0 IIRC), and figured where it fit into the TapnTapped version of 2.2 on the gTab... )
Also you need to be aware that the VAST majority of Android devices are ARM based, and if an app uses "native" code, it's just not going to work on that VPAD since it's x86... it's the downside of that particular tablet for Android, but OTOH you can just run Windows and likely have an easier time getting a linux distro on it eventually...
[EDIT]
Caveat: this method may not even work for 1.6, and some of the apps/services listed may have different names in listings under 1.6, so you MAY end up having to look on another forum for how other 1.6 devices gained market access... e.g. MANY of the Via WM8505 based tablets ran 1.6, e.g. aPad (IIRC) thei rmethod fo rmarket access may work if the above doesn't or has enough differencces...
[/EDIT]
Has anyone figured out how to do it yet? I spend most of my time in windows 7 now cause the android build feels so crippled.

Have you tried the new online market? Also, there is info in these threads about a version of 2.2 for the Viewpad:

Thank you very much my good sir, I now have a direction to follow. I hope this also leads to a working market place.

Please let us know how Froyo runs on the ViewPad 10.
Good Day Everyone,
I have been searching the forums for a few days and installed a number of apk's all of which don't seem to work.
There seems to be so many posts on Chinese tablets and getting Android Market to work. And a number of work arounds that I have tried have so far been unsuccessful. Many of us have bought the WM8650 models (VIA8650,High-performance 800MHZ CPU+300MHZ).
So my question is can't we collaborate as a group who own these tablets to donate an amount (say $10 or $20 each) to the developer that ports an Android version which runs all the Google apps and Market?
That way we won't have to look for workarounds, and those who purchase after us will have a much easier upgrade path.

I have the wm8650 and can't access to the android market, even though there is an icon for it. I get an error that says, "Authentication error. Please check your account/password". Have you figured out the problem yet?
Not yet
Hi guytimes.
The Android Market apk that I loaded won't open, however it seems the pre-loaded Market app on the device only shows applications from China(did not return any results when I searched for Angry Birds). The icons look similar but I'm not sure if the pre-loaded app goes to the Official Android Market place.(If someone knows, please could you correct me?).
In the interim, to at least to get some apps loaded, I managed to get the application from Slideme ( an Android application website) which works well. It does not have all the apps on the official Market but it will let you download and install. I am still trying to find a way to get the Google apps and Market place working or to Port a different ROM to this type of device.

Wow, that stinks. I had no idea the marketplace was blocked on these devices. Please let me know if you find a real work around and I'll do the same.
Hi everyone,
I too opt-in for a possible collaboration.
I'm still waiting my baby to arrive.
Thanks
Thank you boshkop,
Let's hope we can get enough people to agree. And then a technical person to port Android for us.
By the way I found another nice app market at Androidpit
What do you mean by "porting the Android"?! The device already runs Android 2.2!! Am I missing something here?

As far as I understood, he meant that Android market doesn't work and no apps can be installed even via .APK files, am I correct?
I just found a possible solution for the AndroidMarket (using the application Applanet).
Check here (the last post):
androidpit.com/en/android/forum/thread/420722/Table-7-wm8650-VIA-926-REVIEW
I have this tablet and I can tell you, it run 90% of the apk aplications
No need to have an android market. You can install the applanet market and get all free without registration and any complicated steps.
Now the only thing I'm searching is to know how to root the tablet.
I can access all the system files directly and edit any archive but need some special permisions.
Hopefully soon we can find soemthing for this awesome tablet.
rom
Hi everyone, I will have a ROM posted for the Eken m009s with the via 8650 cpu within the next few days, so far I removed the chinese apk's, a different lockscreen (froyo default), and launcher pro as the default home screen, also, Slide Me marketplace works perfectly on this, and Applanet does as well, the market I tried also fails to open.

Unfortunately there are at least 3-4 models with same tech specs.
The only difference is their LED color or if they vibrate on startup or not...
So far, the only way with the custom ROMs for these tablets is trial-and-error.
I tried on last night and it is stuck on a loading screen tried the install again and nothing... mine has green led and does vibrate on startup
