Skype and Froyo on 3 mobile - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi does anyone have a solution to make Skype work on Froyo 2.2 especially on 3 mobile?

YES!!! I've just discovered it.
Firstly, I assume you're using a "3" mobile in the UK, on Android 2.1 and you have it working. People don't seem to be having any problems with Skype on 3 and Android 2.1
Now, go to the Android Market and search for a program called "My Backup" by Rerware LLC. There is a free 30 day trial.
Once it's download and installed, skip past the register for online storage part (if you want) and choose the "Backup", then "Applications" option. Choose to put it on your storage card and choose APK+data. You may get an error saying it can't find market data. Don't worry.
Now, just update your phone to Android 2.2 Froyo, install "My Backup" again and choose the "Restore" option.
For some reason this restored version works perfectly on Froyo. I can only assume some required certificate gets copied over too.
The above was done on a rooted 3-branded Desire running 2.1. I'm now running Froyo with Skype.

Hey Guys
we could also simply go to:

download the updated three mobile file APK file which runs perfectly on Android Froyo, Release Number:
3UKSkype_0.10.0.15_hutch_live
and that works fine straight out of the box to, just released this morning by Three mobile and all official and like

strange, I installed skype on 3 ... but it only runs on mobile data connection ... the WiFi must be off in order to run it ...
P.S. yes, I read that this is only a mobile data app ... sorry for the question

RE: 3 Mobile, Skype, Froyo Update:
Hi There,
Don't worry common question, 3 Mobile was one of the few networks to support Skype across most of it handsets, however in order to do this they had to reach a few compromises.
The truth is although we now have quite a lot of very powerful smart phone, there are still a lot of lower end handsets that are no where near powerful enough to run a full Skype installation, to circumvent this problem and to allow Skype to be used on virtually any handset, 3 Mobile uses a Skype branded version of iSkoot software, which does not use the mobile data or wifi.
When a skype call is initiated it simply dial a normal UK based GSM access number which is totally free on to all three customers which then connects you to the Skype client you are calling. Because this is GSM the Call quality is also very stable and almost guaranteed, as there is more GSM coverage than 3G.
This is a very good solution, and allows you to have Skype calls where ordinarily you would not. On my old Nokia E72, I had both the 3 Mobile client and the official Skype Client running, and used each appropriately, as required, which was a fantastic solution but unfortunately there is not official Skype client for Android, yet, but one is slated for release in October of this year, (crossed fingers), if this is the case then we will all have the Mobile phone Nirvana that is having the flexibility of having both clients on you handset at once.
Having the official client saved my bacon in Nairobi Airport, when we got stranded there because of the volcano, I closed down the 3 client and used the Official Symbian client through the airports WiFi network which worked really well and even allowed me to use my London based 020 Skype in number, carried on business as if nothing had happened.
So yes it has a few limitations but to reliably be able to call Skype contacts have skype chats and make cheap international calls using your Skype Credit far out-weys any of these.
I hope this has served to give you a brief explanation about the hows and whys of the 3 Mobile Skype service. Have a great bank holiday weekend.
Kind Regards and Best Wishes - Ashe Medforth.

so does this fix work???? on 2.2

The 0.15 application works on Froyo 2.2
Hi you don't need this fix now as I explained previously just download the new 0.15 application and it works straight out of the box on Froyo, now need to do anything.
Hope this finally clears this up,
Kind Regards - Ashe.

Finally! Was gutted when skype stopped working.
Thanks for the link

Is there anyway to get this working on a non "3" net work

I don't think so because 3UK is the only network who allows you to use Skype over data connection, besides O2, I heard that they have Skype as well....

[+++WARNING+++] CoPilot and HD2. [+++WARNING+++]

I hate to have to make such a thread, but ALK (the company that makes CoPilot) has informed me of something that they have neglected to mention to anyone purchasing CoPilot Live 8 for their HD2.
The HD2 specific version of CoPilot does NOT bring the map updates that CoPilot advertises
They mentioned that while they have come out with updates for their maps it's only for the REGULAR version of CoPilot. For now, the HD2 version (which I'm sure all HD2 users have purchased) does NOT come with this. So what does this mean? You would have to reinstall your CoPilot program as a normal GPS program. Meaning it would not function with NaviPanel and other HD2 specific software. They are not saying WHEN or even IF they will come out with the updates for the HD2 maps, but in my opinion it's not worth purchasing now until it's fully compatible.
In my own experience. I can't say I like it simply because the maps and searches that I've done (on Live Search for CoPilot) are WAAAAAY out of date. I was looking for a specific hospital when their "live search" gave me an address of where the hospital was almost 12 years ago. Not good and NO excuse for such lack of maintenance. I'll leave it up to people here to decide if they want to buy it or not.
Timely but a shame. I was about to buy this as I've got the UK Tmobile HD2 just this week and it hasn't got CoPilot on it at all. I thought I could get the HD2 version from ALK's website (I think I'd save a tenner) but now maybe I need to buy the full blown version. Are CoPilot's versions of maps easy to identify?
Well, I don´t use the Navipanel since it´s a pain ita to change the backcover everytime for the car-cradle, I´m better off with the Brodit-car-cradle.
I made some fuzz at ALK-Europe for the map-update (I bought the HD2-version in Dec. 2009) and they sent me the original Copilot8 cab for install on SDcard without charge. Now I run the regular version and have no update problem with the maps AND copilot doesn´t eat up my valuable Storage mem.
That's why I'm using the regular version of Copilot on my HD2.
And it works fine.
I indeed remember that when I tried Copilot special HD2 version (trial included in my original ROM) most of the maps were out of date and wrong.
I can't see any point is using the HD2 version, the regular is fine!
I bought cp 8 when It came out, before I even had a HD2, (but was using the test roms)
navipanel seems a gimmick to me, something that I tried once and never bothered with again.
Where are the maps located? In the Copilot folder, right ?
So why not download the regular Copilot version (2577 + Copilot) and then replace just the 2577 folder with the one dedicated to the HD2 (downloaded separately).
Just a suggestion. Could this possibly solve your problems?
@Phenomenon - can you tell me what version of Copilot you mean as a standard version? I'm using ver. 8.0.0.659 -
thanks
Where can I download the generic version of CoPilot? I'm hoping to free some memory, try out the newer maps and upload my tracks with CP Central. It's not that there's much difference between the 2 applications!

Mmm. It occurred to me too but I can't find it. I can download the HD2 version but not the generic. For the former I was sent a link to the full version and just have to enter my details and download the maps etc. that I bought. Getting the HD2 trial is easy too but I cannot find the other anywhere.
ALK have supplied the links to the generic version of CoPilot, together with instructions as to how to install both versions from scratch. They were very quick to reply. I still can't find a link on the website.
Does anyone who has tried the generic version know whether it is necessary to de-register the installed version before trying the device-independent application when re-installing to the same device?
iGO8 people, iGO8!!
I bought the CoPilot 8 Live for my Touch Pro and then changed to the HD2.
But, after I installed the regular CP8 I downloaded the HD2 update software "found link with google in UK" and installed, I have the HD2 version and I do get the map updates...
This does work fine as I've performed the same thing above several times while upgrading roms.
On another note, the website says you can't switch your license to Android from another OS ie: Windows Mobile.. but I'm going to try to deactivate my license on CP8 in Win Mob and reactivate in Android...who knows hopefully it will work...

I'm sure that the web site said it was alright to move between WM and Android when I bought CP8 some months ago. Moving to an iPhone was not possible. I'll see if I can find the page in my archive. I can't believe that I misread it. I think the text is ambiguous now but I'm fairly certain it has changed as well.
You might try contacting ALK and see what they have to say.

Yes! Wifi App for connecting in university Wifi

Hey guys,
I just got my Xperia X10 to work in our university wifi. WPA-EAP PEAP with MSCHAPV2. I used the app Wifi-Config Editor Pro from the market. You don't even need to root your phone. I hope this works on everyone else also. I was so thankful with the developer. This app saved my phone.
is this wifi-config?
Cant find the exact name you mention anywhere.
links please?
I did a search in the android market "wifi config". After that first two results would be wifi config and wifi config editor pro. The free version doesn't have the enterprise configuration. The pro does.
I would love to try this out, but the app is obviously not yet certified for the latest firmware release...
Even with this link (hxxp://bubiloop.com/android-tools-wifi-config-editor-pro), there are no results in the market.
If, like me (X10 mini pro, UK unlocked latest firmware) wifi config pro isn't showing for you in the market you can do the following:
1) Root the phone following the instructions here:
http://android.doshaska.net/x10miniroot
(this works for me on my X10 mini pro)
With the phone connected and usb debugging on/wifi toggled off, from the androidSDK on a PC (Windows,Linux,Mac) get a shell
2) adb shell
3) su
4) cd /data/misc/wifi
5) busybox vi wpa_supplicant.conf
(to edit the wpa configuration file)
6) add this at the end
network={
ssid="eduroam"
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP IEEE8021X
eap=PEAP
identity="MYIDENTITY"
password="SECRET"
phase1="peapver=0"
phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
priority=7
}
or similar, where MYIDENTITY is your eduroam login ID and SECRET is your password. This is taken verbatim from another phone (HTC Desire, Android 2.2) which does work OK
7) save
8) log out
Then connect and surf...
Cosmodia - I don't know why you can't see it in the market. You have Android 1.6 right? At first I cannot see it also since the app was only for Android 2.0 but the developer made it to work with Android 1.6 so now I can see it and got it to work. You can contact the developer and ask questions.
Professordes - I think this should help people who didn't want or don't know how to root their phone
Android 2.x Enterprise settings coming soon
Android WiFi Internal API's changed between version 1.5/1.6/2.x Android 1.6 added a lot of the requirements to enable an enterprise WiFi network, however the published API and UI's don't make it easy to connect to them. They then changed them in 2.0 making virtually all Enterprise configurations valid. Unfortunately the UI still lacks in the ability to configure them. I needed my android device on the WiFi network at work so I wrote an app do to just that.
As of about a week ago I had everything all versions without the enterprise settings working. This is the "WiFi Config Editor" you can find on the market now. I was in the process of enabling the editing of the enterprise settings for Android 2.0+ when I was contacted about getting an X10 on a WPA-EAP network with PEAP authorization. Being the X10 is a 1.6 device I made the changes necessary and released the 1.6 version of "WiFi Config Editor Pro". This version will only work with Android 1.6 as the Enterprise API's are different.
Currently I'm testing the "WiFi Config Editor Pro" for Android 2.0+ and should have it released in the next few days. As I hinted at earlier, the enterprise settings are hidden in Internal API's. This makes developing against them difficult. Google actually places a number of roadblocks in the way to make this harder. But being that Android is open source, it just takes a little bit of persistence to make it all work. Best part of all. NO ROOT REQUIRED!
To my knowledge this is the only app that exists that will allow you to edit WiFi settings at this level without requiring root access. I'm open to suggestions to help make it better. Let me know if anyone has any issues with the app or connecting to specific configurations.
Thanks,
--OddRain
Hello OddRain,
this sounds very promising and I am looking forward to trying it out as soon as the latest firmware release for the X10 gets full Market access again.
Hi Oddrain,
I can't find any other way to contact you.
I am desperately looking to connect to my companies WPA2 enterprise network, with Peap. It also uses a certificate.
I cannot however purchase pro as I am in South Africa and we can only get free apps on the market.
Can you please advise when the android 2.1+ version is available, if it will work for what i need and how I can pay.
Florbid
I still can't seem to find the Wifi Config Editor (neither the free nor the pro version) in the Market, everything else appears to be there.
Is the application limited to some region, firmware or branding?
I'm trying to access the Market from Germany, my X10 is on R2BA026, unbranded phone.
I'm not sure why the app doesnt show up in the market sometimes. The free version supports Android 1.5 and up. There are 2 pro versions, one for Android 1.6 and one for Android 2.0+. All versions should be in the market right now. There are no limits within the application other than the Android Versions supported.
The most reliable way I know of searching the app store is not by the application name, but by the developer name. pub:OddRain would be the Android Market search string, it is Case Sensitive.
--OddRain
Thank you very much for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't get any result with that search term as well.
Could somebody else with the same firmware version please search for this to see if it maybe depends on that?
can wifi config editor (free version) solve the issue of the campus wifi (WPA/WPA2-EAP PEAP with MSCHAPV2) ?
Thanks!
can you just extract the .apk and post it here please and make it easier for all?

Google Voice on GB

EDIT: Mods, please move this to the main Charge forum, accidentally put this thread in the wrong place.
Hey all,
Of the people who use Google Voice, what have your experiences been? I have used every variant of the leaked GB ROMs available as of this point, 8:40PM MT, and GV won't work with any of them. Having GV installed, it will not load up my account when I select my main Google account on setup. Going back to any Froyo ROM it will work fine but GB is no-go. I have heard some people saying it won't work and other saying it works fine.
GV is my main method of SMS since I have my vzw SMS turned off and blocked so if I run a GB ROM, I get no SMS. I have installed GV both from Titanium and directly from the market with no luck. Has anybody figured out a fix for this? I know this is all still very beta and it could just be a flaw in the leak but I really would love to have some Netflix.
- Glitch
P.S. Yes, I have wiped cache and dalvik and still nothing.
In the same boat
I am in the same boat - 100% GV SMS realiant (no VZW SMS at all) and have had the same issues. I've tried installing from TB, the Market... everything I could think of and haven't had any luck. Because of this, and the fact that one of the other apps I use daily (VZ FiOS TV Remote Control App) does'nt work, I think I am going to be headed back to Froyo until the official release comes out.

[Customizing] Replacing Default Applications

Hi, If you have rooted and installed a cooked-rom you can now start really editing your system to your needs, below is what I would do with the ChaCha/Status enjoy:
Launcher Pro
INSTEAD OF HTC Sense
Opera Mobile 11 (Not Opera Mini).
INSTEAD OF WebKit Browser
Opera Mobile is not available for this handset yet via Android Market
(You Need To Manually Install - Below Is Link)
QuickPik
INSTEAD OF Default Gallery
Handcent
INSTEAD OF SMS Default
MORE TO COMING SOON.
DOWNLOAD OPERA MOBILE 11 .APK FOR CHACHA
I tried removing stock messaging app to use handcent and mms stopped working.
I understood the latest handcent didn't need stock message to work, but something is amiss!

Actually you're wrong. I have installed Opera Mobile the first moment I got the phone (a month ago).

You can also find it in the Market App. Just use the damn search button in the android market app.
This app is compatible with your Orange HTC HTC ChaCha A810e.

CURRENT VERSION:

Hi, You said that it is available from the Android Market APP. I can confirm three things that might differentiate between the situations when you downloaded the app and I did:
For Starters I Have: A Three Mobile ROM Not An Orange One.
Secondly: I have the latest ANDROID MARKET UPDATE - YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE.
(I KNOW YOU CAN DOWNLOAD OPERA FROM THE ONLINE MARKET)
Thirdly: You downloaded it a month ago and I attempted a few days ago via mobile (using browser) and it said incompatible with device. So I searched the market via mobile and it was not listed (Market APP does not list incompatible APPS).
THE ABOVE REASONS ARE WHY I THINK IT MIGHT HAVE WORKED FOR YOU AND NOT ME.

Hi, Please do not attempt to remove the stock messaging app just use the Handcent one as default - it should then work. If MMS is still not working for your handset please wait approximately TWO WEEKS and I will be releasing my new ROM that has at least 80MB of extra free space and it replaces the FACEBOOK BUTTON TO A TWITTER BUTTON.
ALSO I AM ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE HTC SENSE COMPLETELY BUT SO FAR NO LUCK - BUT THE WHOLE ROM WORKS SMOOTHLY AND IS AMAZINGLY FAST.
Stay tuned and I'll do something about handcent from within the custom-ROM and I'll let you know.
I put stock messgae back, always freeze using titanium first. I read latest handcent didn't need stock app that was all.

hi,
i flashed your rom.
- less then 60megs free mem on internal storage
- facebookbutton is not working as a twitterbutton
never the less nice rom
Thank you for testing the TweetDroid ROM and for that useful information I will be updating the ROM to work the button with something and increase the memory.
However, I'd like to ask you some questions:
- Is The ROM Stable?
- Does Google Plus Work?
- Does a Twitter App Appear?
- Does Opera Mobile 11 Work As The Default Browser?
- Is The New Market Installed or The Old One From SuperDroid?
Thanks.
i've only tested twitter and this version looks strange! it seems not the be the org. version which can be installed via market?! am i wrong?
rom is stable so far.
opera, google+ not tested yet, sorry
i tried myself to assign an app to the facebookbutton. as a matter of fact, qwerty was broken. nonfunctional anymore

Yes - you're right the twitter app is not by twitter - it's from a third-party company that uploaded it to mediafire - i will change the copy to the official soon.
I will also change the keyboard settings somehow and upload a new ROM called CAMDROID 1.0 before 7:00PM GMT.
If you have time - have a look at Opera Mobile.

Skype on a cheap tablet running 2.2, how?

I'm trying to get Skype running on a cheap Chinese 7 inch tablet (on 2.2 Froyo) for a friend and obviously it has no access to the Play Shop (formerly Android Market).
I've tried quite a few .apk's but the furthest I can get is where it lets me enter login details with my Skype account but then hangs trying to log in.
Has anyone ever managed to get Skype running on one of these cheap tablets or is it not possible?
I believe for front facing camera support, you need android 2.3 or later. Plus the processor of most of these cheap tablets don't support most apps, I read.

It looks like you tried sideloading skype .apk's but all of them hang.
Your best option would be to try flashing a custom ROM that has market support (CM7.2 or CM9 for example) and try Skype from there.
