My favorite ROM - HTC Desire S

I've spent the last two weeks trying out different ROMs. I was looking for one that had everything I wanted. I didn't find one, but this is what I've ended up with.
CM 7.1: it's my favorite. I love the speed (best Quadrant scores of all), flawless behavior, and ability to customize. My favorite tweak is the quick login (no Ok).
Flaw: FM radio is poor and needs Bluetooth turned on.
MIUI.us 1.12.9: (very close) second favorite. Use Go Launcher Ex as I don't like the MIUI launcher. FM radio works well, but makes noise when it starts/end.
Love the arrangement of Settings - three sensible tabs, not one long list.
ICS b4r1: (using it now) Love the new mail and browser apps. Browser comes with built-in sync of booths with Chrome.
Like the clean theme of the UI, in fact after seeing it, I installed the ICS themes for Go Launcher and CM. Can't wait for CM 9 to come out as it will combine all the goodness of CM with ICS.
Flaws: lots of them, but it IS just a beta.
Virtuous (unity 2.39) and Endymion 3.1: both of these are HTC Sense 3.0/5 ROMs. Beautiful look and feel - better than all other ROMs. Flawless FM radio. Great widgets.
Syncing with Exchange works well. Note, troubles syncing with Exchange calendar was the reason I went looking at other ROMs in the first place.
Dislike: not enough space on a window, so I use Go Launcher Ex. But this means I can no longer use the HTC widgets. And this is why I don't get the benefit of staying on an HTC Sense ROM.

Nice overview!
Personally, I'm mainly a Sense man, so i stick with Endymion as my daily driver.
I used MIUI for a bit, and agree with you about the settings arrangement.
Never really understood the hype for ICS, but when I tried it yesterday, I was blown away!
It's awesome! I think I could finally live with a AOSP ROM!
ICS is very consistent and clean.
I like CM7 purely for its endless advanced settings.
So I agree; CM9 will be so frickin' awesome!
Great thread man!

I have tried my fair share of roms.
I liked oxygen as it was pure aosp clean and quick. But it just wasn't fancy enough for me.
Tried most sense roms but I can't put my finger on why I can't stick with them. Suppose its just to normal and what's supposed to be on my phone.
Cm7 was good quick and fully functional I liked it a lot.
I'm on miui 1.11.25 at mo as had some issues with latest builds. Miui is what I always seem to stick with. Like you said settings menu is good. I'm addicted to changing the way my phone looks daily ( sad I know).
Haven't tried ics yet waiting for it to be fully functional before I do incase it taints my experience of it, but it all sounds good so far seems the egl issue has slowed progress down alot hope they fix it soon.
For now though I'll stick with miui but I'm getting itchy fingers again may have to change, maybe I'll give sense another chance

I've tried CM7, then LBC Mod, then Hyperion...for me I would say Hyperion is my favorite ROM as I have not installed other ROM for the past one months...hehe...before this constantly changing ROM...love android!!

ICS is the best really! Looks so nice

CM7
I have only tried CM7, looks good!

During my "investigation" of the various roms, I ran the Quadrant Standard test. CM was the fastest, closely followed by MIUI. The stock HTC ROM fared the worst.

I think it's great that there are all sorts of different roms available, because we are all different and value different things.
I'm coming to value and appreciate the openness of Android, not to mention the brilliant work done by all the developers of the roms.

Sure
But remember Quadrant scores do not reflect the true capability of the phones speed
For one, I can't tell the speed difference between CM7 and MIUI

Do you mean that the user interface feels smoother and more responsive in CM than MIUI or are you thinking of something else?

Nope
Apologies, in my previous post i was meant to say I CAN'T tell the speed difference between MIUI and CM7.
I'm saying Quadrant Scores don't do justice of actual phone performance.
For me even though CM7 scores a giver score than MIUI, doesn't mean its faster
I tested both, and speed feels the same!
Also for e.g, Hyperion ROM scores 2500+ points, whereas Endymion scores only 2000+ points.
But in use, Endymion is MUCH faster and smoother, (as HTC optimised sense 3.5 better for single core)
Hope that clarifies - don't always truest quadrant!

I agree that user perception does not necessarily correlate with performance scores. I never felt that the stock HTC ROM was slow, yet it had poor Quadrant scores, mostly due to the database I/O section.
The performance scores simply give an objective assessment of *some* of the system's behaviour.

The stock 3.0 sense ROM quadrant is around 1900+, whereas the stock 2.1 is only 1000+
But I'm real performance, sense 2.1 is much faster and smoother than sense 3.0!

I don't see point of quadrant scores. I'm not bothered how quick my phone performs pointless tests but how good it feels when I use it. A good rom is far more personal then a bunch of scores. For me its about settings and customization so I like to use miui. Its all personal choice

I have a one newbie question...
If you try some new ROM youre data was lost? All youre application and all data on phone?

Only if you don't back them up! I use Titanium Backup (available on Market) to take copies if all my apps and their data.
I also use 4EXT Touch (used to use Clockwork Mod ROM manager, also available on Market) to take a full copy of my current system before I install a new one.

Yes it is one of the most stable and outstanding ROMS out today for the Droid X and I can't wait for 4.3 cause I know they are going to bring some new flavor and goodness to it as if it was not already sweet enough...
+2, great ROM!
Second third fourth what ever this Rom is the cats azz I love it. Can't wait for the gingerbread flavor to be incorporated. To your question I believe since BB cooked it and he's mydroidworld I don't see him going around a lot. I think its more world of mouth that gets this Rom going.

Really depends on what you want. Liberty is very empty on stock but very fast, DS is stocked with blur/ and minimal bloatware, very fast as well. It all depends on your flavor. I think liberty is great for a super modder/hacker, but DS is everyday fast and everyday stable for the everyday user

I have been running this ROM for a couple weeks now and I have yet to find anything negative. I have flashed just about all the other ROMs on my DROID X and DS continues to blow them away with its overall stability, but best of all is the speed. This ROM is flat out FAST!!! I would say Liberty 1.5 and Apex 1.4 are tied for second place, but thats a distant second. Thanks to the devs!!!(all ROM devs)

to be honest the theme selection is low due to ds already being so heavily and nicely themed already,,,,,here is one

and some have reported using the universal theme cookers successfully as well
I've used both DS and Liberty and...
I like Liberty a lot more for the sole reason that the customization options that Liberty offers are far beyond that of DS.
This all depends, as midgetgrimm stated, on what you are looking for...

I really like this rom so far. The only complaint is the battery, compared to liberty..
That was fixed using juice defender and super power apps anyways.
The only serious thing is that there is no way to import contacts from the SD card. Most of my text messages, the sender is in my contacts, and it doesn't show their name. Instead, it shows the full #..
Also, anyone have some cool green backgrounds or docks?
For the Contacts Import, did you try this using the actual Contacts App? or just by going to the Dialer and going to your contacts from there? (Dumb question I know, but doesn't hurt to ask)
Also, If you don't mind using a Wallpaper App, then try out Zedge. It's a Wallpaper and Ringtone browser. If you get Zedge, then just do a search for "green" (this is how I found some pretty nifty color specific Wallpapers).
It didn't work in the contacts app, I had to change all my #'s to include a "1" in the beginning of the #..
This rom is awesome though, no freezes or issues at all.

[Q] CM7 On Sensation

I asked Cyanogen if we should expect Cyanogenmod on the Sensation, and he's definitely leaning towards YES. He's thinking about buying a Sensation himself. I'd rather get a phone that I know the man himself will have it. This news, is great news! I'm excited! Does this change anyones mind about getting this phone?

Nice. They also posted that the S is coming off soon.
i didn't know what CM7 was, so i went to check it out. found a youtube video with a guy doing a detailed review of CM7 on a galaxy S (not S2). and, i gotta say the performance was absolutely mindblowing. if my sensation was just half as smooth as that... MAN. what astonished me most was how easy he pulled down the notification bar... just a swipe down from the top and it came down, following his finger perfectly in a buttery smooth motion. that does not work at all on my sensation. in fact i stopped trying to swipe the notification bar down cause it's too hard to accomplish, always takes 3 or more swipes to do it - and when it finally comes down, compared to that CM7 on galaxy S video, it stutters down and looks just awful while doing it. damn. i felt really good about my sensation (coming from a blackstone touch hd) but now that i've watched that video... i'm pissed at HTC for making my phone look like a weakling compared to older single core android phones... when i decided to get the sensation, i never would have thought that the UI responsiveness and overall snappieness were going to be my biggest issues with this 1,2 GHz DUAL CORE "uberphone".
i know this doesn't exactly belong in this thread, sorry. didn't feel like it was worth opening another *****ing-about-the-performance-thread.

Will be good to see CM7 on Sensation in the future, I just hope it performs well. When I had my Desire I found CM7 to be a tad buggy (random restarts mostly and boot loops) even on a stable release, same thing on a friends Desire HD. For this reason I turned away from CM7 and flashed LeeDrOid.
I'm currently running Android Revolution HD on my Sensation but when CM7 comes out for it I'll give it a go.

CM7 has always been super stable for me.
When in doubt, fastboot wipe, then flash, then don't set up right away but let it sit there on the sign-in screen for 5 minutes before you touch it.
I've been running cm7 on my Glacier for like 7 months and it's way more stable than the stock rom, lol.
I cannot wait.... stepping up from good old hd2 to the sensation with CM7 should be amazing....
I've heard something about, that CM on HTC devices is allways WITHOUT HTC Sense.
Is this correct?
On my htc Desire i've used LeeDroid and InsertCoint but never CM... But as it looks like CM will be the first ROM with android 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 for our sensation. So finally google talk with video will be available...

CyanogenMOD ROM is AOSP Android (with tons of addons/tweaks/etc) with ADW.Launcher as the built in Launcher.
No Sense. Never will Sense be on a CyanogenMOD ROM.
why the hell would you WANT Sense on a custom rom?? Sense is what makes your phone BUGGY and SLOW! My first phone was the original Desire (bought it in China, brought back to the US, unable to use 3G as a result of it being a European model with no American radio bands) with stock Froyo and 2.2. I rooted it and put CM7 on (2.3.3, later updated to 2.3.4 as a result of the nightlies).. it easily ran 3x faster and much smoother...
CM > all.
Sense = garbage, even 3.0..
I could have picked up another Sensation while I was in China for Steve to abuse, lol..
Really hope this comes out soon.... Tired of all of these sense port roms. I just want my stock gingerbread.... I can't believe that I miss my nexus one because of this...

What's your favorite Sense 3.5 rom and why!

What is your preffered Sense 3.5 rom on Sensation today?
Is it the fastest one? The more stable one? the more ...?
I am using Senseay and though it's very stable I wonder if there is any rom faster and funnier out there.
LeeDroid's is the best one
InserCoin is the best ,then Elegancia
I'm currently using Sens-O-Matic (or so) and i like it. At the first day i had some random reboots but not anymore (just didnt accur anymore).
The good thing about it is, that you can choose which bloatware (HTC Hub, HTC Notes, HTC whatever) you want and what you don't want.
There is a thread with a poll, where you can see what people think. I think it is in forum general!
I agree with the poll, that is ARHD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849) is the best;-)
Why fast smooth and so on.
Elegencia is faster than Senseay? I mean in scrolling,drawer...
I which we can have the sgs2 speed with a sense 3.5 rom
The only 3.5 roms that ever ran up to snuff for me was Energy, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226564, and LeeDroid was probably just as good. I'm not sure how it is now, but when 3.5 roms first starting being uploaded, they ran really bad on my phone. They're good now though, but I prefer AOSP.

+1 Sense-O-Maniac is a very cool fast 3.5 rom!
I've really liked InsertCoin's stuff, especially 3.4.5 (the current one). It might be my imagination, but some of the releases are hit-and-miss, but 3.4.5 is absolutely a hit.

Looks like it includes the original HTC Camera App? (unless that's like that in very MIUI V4?)
Who's thinking of using this instead of Sense or AOSP, when it's released?

Im probably gonna switch over to MIUI, since I prefer to customize the UI the way I want to make my device even more unique :-3
The HTC camera its a pretty good thing! I'll totally give it a shot!
It will be better with a sense base. Cm and aokp are just not stable enough to use as a base.for the sensation they used a sense base as well and it worked perfect

I'm glad to see One S users will have a choice. When this becomes official MIUI.us will release both, as I will be continuing my CM9 based port. The different ROMS will have different advantages over the other. I've never actually used one of these sense-based roms but some of the complaints have been file size and theme compatibility. But like I said we will release both versions just like we currently do with the Sensation.

Theme compatability is a big issue phone and camera and other frameworks don't theme cause of the sense framework. So it depends if u want a themable cm9 version with bugs. Or a non themable version with no bugs. Its a tough choice.
But the sense version didn't seem to loose any speed compared to the cm9 counterpart at least on the sensation

I'm hoping I will. I was on MIUI 2.6.15, and loved it, until that recent radio issue. A phone is no good when it gets no reception.
I'm going to try Leedroid tonight.

There's a temp fix for the radio issue posted towards the end of my thread. Once they figure it out I am updating the base.
MIUI v4 always based on stock roms, thats why htc´s camera is working on MIUI too.
Actually i am in the closed beta team from miui and waiting for the first version for testing all that ****. :good:
@luddeblaesild Multilanguage is planned for future releases.
Oh my gosh. That's amazing news, I really like MIUI, but i stayed with leedroid only bc of the camera
Fyi miui.us has the English version posted on their home page...like I said I'm continuing using my port but would like to hear some feedback on it. I'll be posting an official thread on MIUI.us a little later today

What flavor of Android do you have?

Hello everyone
I'm conducting some research and I would like to know from you what version of Android you're rocking!
Once you done voting, reply on why you're using a certain version of Android (i.e. No stable ROMs -just an example, there are plenty stable ROMs-, no good battery life on certain version of android, to lazy to update etc.)
Then when you're done here go over to elvisypi's thread and vote on which ROM you're using
Thanks!

I'm on ICS
The reason is Sense, I love the HTC style! I will get on JB when HTC releases updates for One S, with the first porting.
I'm on CM10 (AKA JellyBean), Sense is amazing, better than any skinned Android OS on other brands, but i've found it to lag after heavy use and needs a reboot to kick up again. i never saw that on CM.

I can understand where you coming from. Sense is very "bloaty"... But there is things you can do to cut it down like ROM cleaner and freezing apps you don't use :cyclops:
This poll would be better if you had it set up like this:
Sense 3.0 GB
Sense 3.5 GB
AOSP GB (CM7, etc)
Sense 3.6 ICS
AOSP ICS (CM9, AOKP, etc)
Sense 4.1
AOSP Jellybean (CM10, AOKP-JB, PA, etc)
Sense 4.5 Jellybean (just for future-proofing the poll)
AOSP Jellybean 4.2 (again, for future-proofing)
That way you can see exactly the more detailed preferences of the community (and also the broad preferences) rather than only the broad preferences.
No harm, just a suggestion

Hey man thanks for the suggestion :good:. I think I should edit it to that its just I don't want it to interfere to much with the other poll that is running at the moment that I gave a link to in the 1st post.

It's cool
For me the only way to go is jb. Paranoid Android is my daily driver. I've been through all android os and sense (which I don't really care for) with this phone.if i can only get WiFi to work i would not have to get another phone.

My only problem with JellyBean so far is none of the ROMs give a really smooth status bar feel, and thats really important to me...
Also my phone gets hot really quickly with JellyBean ROMs and the battery life isn't to good...
I was on Cmx by Bruce and it was good except the wifi signal is too weak. My phone could hardly catch any when I'm at school. So now I'm on ViperS 1.4 and it's the best sense 4 rom for the Sensation. It's very stable, great battery life and smooth performance.

I am using European ICS 4.0.3 and Sense 3.6 stock rom, version 3.33.401.53 to be precise. Since the last .53 update that rolled out in europe, sense crashes have become quier rare. Its very good and stable now.
So moved from Apex launcher to completely stock experience. Working great for me.
Custom Roms were never my liking coz of the kernel changes devs do. I prefer running completely stock roms if there are not any serious issues

I'm using ICS 4.0.3 and 3.33 firmware also I'm using jelly bean Android version 4.1.2 with paranoid Android by Dragun Korr. It's stable fast smooth, and you can turn your phone into a tablet, or a phone/tablet hybrid, or leave it a phone. It has a ARM V 7 processor . I really love this rom and Android version. I've had no trouble what so ever with it! Wi-Fi working, tethering working, no reboots, no lag, simply awesome! Use it as my daily driver. Development is very active and alive with this rom. Always improving or adding something else! It's been the best rom I've tired in my opinion! I don't miss sense for a second. Tons of customization available!

ics
imho, cm9 and sense on ics are the most stable and battery friendly roms you can get, for now. JB gave me a headache every time i had a look on the battery usage graph. but still, once you go JB it's hard to go back to sense or cm9. cheers.
ICS.
HTC Sense has a lot of useful stuff. Internet Pass-Through, Contact Sync is nice to have.
Tried a lot of JB ROMs still went back to Sense 3.6 and on rare cases, Sense 4.
Frankensteins Aokp Jellybean 4.1 here! Best battery life....solid and stable. Everything works....even have Android 4.2 keyboard, camera... ect

using ICS (Venom). i bought an HTC because of Sense.
After a number of attempts at JB I have elected to stick with ICS for the time being.
Not that I don't appreciate some of the improvements in JB but every ROM I tried just wasn't stable enough. I get better battery life and responsiveness with a fully tweaked install of an ICS sense ROM.
How much display times do you get before your battery dies? Also do you have a stock battery?
