[Q] USB OTG (on the go) is it possible and what do we need? - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to use USB OTG on the G3? Do we need some special cable, or it is a kernel, hardware or a software function?

Well we first of all need a supporting kernel. I remember Dharam and Hillbeast trying to implement it. Don t know what outcome they got though. Ask in thread.

Thanks.
Can you tell me what thread was that?

G3Mod kernel thread. I remember Hilleast as well as Dharam discussing about it.

Yes i contacted him, and he said that he worked on this ages ago, and never sorted out something with the drivers... And now has too much work, so maybe in near future..

maybe this will work easier on ics?

In short: it allows you to connect to usb devices like mice, keyboards and even memory sticks or flash drives!

Well what about a flash drive? That doesn't seems pointless.. Imagine a flash drive with 8 or 16 gb of movies..

Also a keyboard would be useful to type an email.

we can use a standard usb otg cable which is used for phones like the n8 and galaxy s2. techincaly its possible but we need to do the software part.
i have already asked some kernel devs like they said 1st priority is cm7, then cm9
and once both have been achieved to a certain degree then we can start thinking of deving other things. also this mod requires more work and deving then most others. so even when it starts it will take time.

[WIP] ICS for DHD

some progress

here's my latest build
http://www.mediafire.com/?li8wrr2mym6b7lv
volume down=back
volume up = menu
cursor still, ui force closes still. You have to use two fingers one to click one to move the cursor. Once you get past the lock screen and in between systemui close notifications longpress the desktop and set a live wallpaper - I have included one in the build. That will stop the crashes and you can play.
sdcard is working, lights are working, vibrator seems to be working, maybe more. I've added wifi and bluetooth and some audio config files and firmware so wifi and bluetooth are in the settings menu now but will need lots more work before they function at all. Basically play with it have fun
*edit
one more thing this is set up for inspire so it has an inspire idc file in it - not sure if that will break it for desirehd but if it doesn't boot delete that idc file and it will work exactly the same

is that from the sdk? cuz then its best to wait for source code, the sdk doesnt have hardware acceleration, its gna be really laggy
The guy, who ported ICS to Desire, claimed that the CM kernel was the only one helped him to boot.

If I catch time, I'll try this of it's really not sdk

How so? It would act the same as if on the nexus, just not on the same phone. Right? Or am I missin something?

will try to lose again a few hours on this to again say "I" can't make it work
either that or keep an eye on my baby... this is better

Yes! If you can definitely say, that there are so big differences between Nexus and SGS so that OTG won't ever be working it's ok.
Another question would be if SGS/Nexus S will ever be able to support USB devices with power...
But here i won't be that pessimistic and say that it is not possible from the beginning.

Kernel or hardware issue? It will work with BT keyboard and mouse
But we already have ubuntu on android, only difference is because this will be official way to install it with support from canonical.
I never tried hdmi with ubuntu on my LG, does kernel support loop device support?

No it doesn't support loop device, I have tried and didn't work. So I guess we have one more thing to work with, try to include it in the kernel.
Nahh, Ubuntu we have running on android today is way different than that, this new one will be fully integrated with the phones Android software. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Btw what is the dock function?

Just a dock for connecting phone with keyboard and/or monitor/TV.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359625
It is not necessary, but it looks nice, more professional for some managers
Does anyone with kernel experience want to chime in. I'd like to compile my own kernel then add usb loop support.

you would have to use the adapter to plug in a power usb hub, meaning the hub has a plug in cable to give it power from a wall outlet. Then you could plug the drive into that. The problem is that the phone cannot give power through usb, so nothing would run off it without outside power.
支持otg,但不支持供电,需要外接供电!

How do you know for sure its a kernel problem? You using your own made kernel or which one?
Also go to settings->storage->menu button and change settings.

maybe you may post in the kernel's thread or the rom's thread, don't you think that it may be a better way?
EDIT: i see that you have your custom kernel in your signature... so, i think you may try to contact other devs and see what they say, for me usb storage works, but only i can see external sd... btw i'm using airdroid, so it doesn't matter for me
Any and every USB related problem is a ramdisk problem. init.qcom.usb.rc to be exact.
