Saw it yesterday as well. Probably not gonna work with O3D cause we don't have USB host function on our phone. LG "forgot" to include it.

Kernel or hardware issue? It will work with BT keyboard and mouse
But we already have ubuntu on android, only difference is because this will be official way to install it with support from canonical.
I never tried hdmi with ubuntu on my LG, does kernel support loop device support?

No it doesn't support loop device, I have tried and didn't work. So I guess we have one more thing to work with, try to include it in the kernel.
Nahh, Ubuntu we have running on android today is way different than that, this new one will be fully integrated with the phones Android software. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Btw what is the dock function?

Just a dock for connecting phone with keyboard and/or monitor/TV.

It is not necessary, but it looks nice, more professional for some managers

Does anyone with kernel experience want to chime in. I'd like to compile my own kernel then add usb loop support.

LG hasn't released the 2.3.3 source so no custom kernels exist.
Would it be reasonable to assume that since the old kernel works with 2.3.3 (they didn't update it at all), a modified kernel such as faux's would work with it as well?
I was thinking that as well

try it and let us know how it goes. i think i read a post by faux that said that your usb would likely not work because they changed the way that was implemented between froyo and gb

Yep Breaks USB...
faux123 said:
The biggest difference between Froyo and Gingerbread is the USB Gadget code as far as kernel is concerned. So without Official GB source code, this kernel will break USB if you loaded to the GB ROM. If you don't care about the USB, then I guess it would be OK.

[Q] USB OTG (on the go) is it possible and what do we need?

Is it possible to use USB OTG on the G3? Do we need some special cable, or it is a kernel, hardware or a software function?

Well we first of all need a supporting kernel. I remember Dharam and Hillbeast trying to implement it. Don t know what outcome they got though. Ask in thread.

Can you tell me what thread was that?
G3Mod kernel thread. I remember Hilleast as well as Dharam discussing about it.

Well what about a flash drive? That doesn't seems pointless.. Imagine a flash drive with 8 or 16 gb of movies..
Also a keyboard would be useful to type an email.

we can use a standard usb otg cable which is used for phones like the n8 and galaxy s2. techincaly its possible but we need to do the software part.
i have already asked some kernel devs like they said 1st priority is cm7, then cm9
and once both have been achieved to a certain degree then we can start thinking of deving other things. also this mod requires more work and deving then most others. so even when it starts it will take time.

Yes! If you can definitely say, that there are so big differences between Nexus and SGS so that OTG won't ever be working it's ok.
Another question would be if SGS/Nexus S will ever be able to support USB devices with power...
But here i won't be that pessimistic and say that it is not possible from the beginning.
stupy said that it is most likely possible, but he will need help.

Bunch of guys have hacked and reverse engineered an important part of the bcm4329 firmware on the Nexus One. They released the firmware patch, so it could be built for others using the same chipset.
So can anyone actually do it? Build a patched version?

The Sidekick 4G does use the 4329, but I'm certainly not the right person to try adapting it.

Sweet! I just saw this on HackaDay and was hoping we had the right chipset. I still need to install linux and get the build environment set up, but I'm definitely interested in getting this working. USB OTG comes first, though...

I think TheLastSidekick just needs $15 dollars to send it to me.
I'll tinker with porting this to sgs4g.

I think we already have a thread about installing Ubuntu...same idea, no one has a real working thing yet.

Ok thx for the answer. Mh unfortunately I must wait >.<
It would be awesome, but seems like it would be too much of a hassle with our cpu's being different than that of a normal pc.

It's already installed. Android is based on it.
OK, I know, you mean a traditional "desktop" Linux distribution like Ubuntu.

The CPU is not the problem - Linux and many applications have been ported to many different architectures for 20 years. The device drivers are the biggest issue because they are closed source. And maybe some problems related to partitioning and the bootloader.
I mean the desktop linux. Asus must offer the drive and coded.

Pretty much.
From what I gather there already is a working Ubuntu port for the TF300 but since the hardware is different, a TF700 port may still take a while.
People seem confident of it being possible though... Can't wait!
