[Q] How to block OTA on Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
is it possible to block the OTA updates on the Nexus S?
I have stock Gingerbread 2.3.6 and would like to keep it for a good while until all the teething problems of ICS are ironed out.
Cheers

I thought when the update is there, you can accept it or cancel. So then you cancel it, and wait for the next OTA

Try the FOTAkill app from the market. It's supposed to block ota's.

even you finish dl the OTA , you can choose not to install the ota , but the ota will still in your sd part.

it's not on the market. i've read you can freeze updater through titanium but i can't seem to find it at all.

Just don't click install =]

Doh! It used to be, but I've noticed that some apps can't be accessed since upgrading to 4.0.3. Probably need to use Market Enabler to find FOTAkill.

Is there a way to force updates?

Just wondered if there was a way in which I could force an update? I've had to revert back to stock firmware and am currently on 2.3.1. Ive tried the CHECKIN method but nothing happened. Any suggestions guys?
you can manually push the update through recovery located here:

Nope..
Do look for the thread titled '2.3.3 link' though. It's rather easy to apply it manually.

Thanks guys
I have done that method before but I think it screwed up my mms hence I would rather receive it OTA just incase. Are they still pushing out the 2.3.2 update for us that are yet to receive 2.3.3?

Probably not. They would probably send you the version that goes from whatever you're on to 2.3.3 since the Android 2.3.3 URL thread has like three different versions.
The alternative is to flash a custom ROM such as CM7, Axura, GingerS, MoDaCo which features 2.3.3 (unsure about GingerS)
I still don't get the 2.3.3 OTA either. Since I had some problem when I was using N1 and tried to update it manually, I decide to wait for OTA in my NS. I am curious why it can take so long time to push out an OTA?
Two reasons: network strain and damage control in the event of Problems.
I'm waiting for the OTA to come through to my other halves new NS which we got yesterday to update from 2.3.1 to either 2.3.2 or better still 2.3.3 but, guess it ain't happening any time soon :-(

Force update in post #2 that I linked. This is the same file you would get from the OTA. All the OTA does is bring a dialog box saying its available for you and it goes to that link. The link was achieved using aLogCat. It's directly from *.google.com

Picked up my NS on saturday (so it should be running 2.3.1 right?) Anyway when I go into settings-about phone-system update it says i have latest version. I am fairly confident this is not so. So how do I force update to my NS?

Search for the thread titled '2.3.3 link' and do it manually or wait until you get it pushed down to you. There it's no way to force it OTA (over-the-air)

[Q] Why can't I get OTA upgrade from google?

My Nexus S' version is 2.3.2(It's from T-mobile).
I haven't gotten any OTA 2.3.3 from google.
When I enter number *#*#2432546#*#*, it is not working.
I know how to upgrade 2.3.3 manually.
But why can't I get OTA?
Does google stop sending it?
Same here 8/

Most of us are aware we can manually update. I'd really like to know why when i nandroid back to my 2.3.2 stock image the OTA is never received.
Kind of makes me thinks google has pulled the update and hence it might even be better for me to stay on 2.3.2 if google is not keen to keep pushing 2.3.3?

simple question. I9020A rooted running ICS rom. Do I accept OTA update?

Hi there,
Since my phone is a I9020A on Fido I rooted and currently running CM9 ICS rom, should I accept any OTA update or do I have to manually install it through CWM?
No, it can screw up your device if you do it like that. Just do it manually like everyone is doing.

Only difference between odex and deodex is that deodex is for theming. Odex boots faster.... And if the radio you're using right bow is working properly you don't need to flash another radio

Ok so I flashed 2.3.6 back stock for OTA rom from the thread in this section and now for some odd reason I cant access my CWM. Whenever I try to it shows some box and triangle thing flashing
tried to reflash CWM using Rom Manager and kept getting an error.
Doh!
To the handful of people getting OTA update on i9020a, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get either:
a) name of ZIP file
b) URL of ZIP file
c) copy ZIP file and upload (should be in /cache folder I think)
(preferably all three)
Once you install it the file is deleted and you lost your chance, so please if you downloaded update don't apply until you get at least one of the above...but preferably all three, you would be a hero to all of us in this thread with i9020a wanting update. This is AT&T/Rogers model.

The OP states he is running CM9 Kangs... He isn't getting the update since he is not on stock -- I think he is just asking how to actually take the OTA when it comes.
I am on Fido too in Canada and I can assure you, I have not received the OTA for my I9020A yet... Once it is available for my I9020A, I will post all the information here (if the I9020A official OTA is not already posted, that is...)
if i flash back to stock with root will i still receive OTA on ns4g?? even if with a different kernal?

I think the kernel has to be stock as well.
I just downloaded OTARootKeeper app and have reverted completely back to stock; I am patiently waiting for the i9020A OTA.
Hopefully we get it soon.
I don't mind a little wait though... by then all the other bugs and such with SuperUser app will be figured out for ICS.

I downloaded Voodoo OTARootKeeper from the android market. The description of the program claims it should hide your root during the ota and according to the apps latest reviews, it works on this ics upgrade. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it works and hopefully the super user app from the market will be updated by then to handle ics.

Also, Superuser has been officially updated for ICS, so you don't really need to use OTARootKeeper. The new SU works just like before.

(Q) System Apps

I have a question. I just got my A2 today and rooted it successfully. I'm staying on the stock rom until the bootloader gets unlocked. I have tbu installed to restore my apps from my last phone. Now I want to get rid of some bloatware. I want to know if its safe to uninstall them with tbu and if I do this will it affect any updates that att might send out?

I wouldn't uninstall anything if I was u. Find an app to freeze them but read up on the apps that are freezable. One wrong move.... u know? Its gonna be a while I think before the bootloader gets unlocked! U can always go back to stock with the fxz file. I've done it and it works... for sure!
Thanks to the both of you.
When you say bloatware, almost 90% of AT&T preinstalled apps are installed in data/app not system/app so they are removable by default. You can uninstall about 90% of them the same way as any other app. This also shouldn't have any impact on the OTA updates pushed from AT&T.

No you can not do this with out having issues with updates and such! We have found in cheesecake that updates require things like the ATT crapware, and the update fails if does not find the apps installed, so if you do this, you will have to restore the fxz before any update, so that you can get the update.
Whatever anyone does DO NOT REMOVE ANY APPS from your phone, that were shipped with it! Go get modaco's easy freazy, and freeze anything that might be bloat, but just search in here to see if anyone had an issue after freezing.
Jim, did AT&t push out the update already, because I uninstalled all of the crapware the first day I got my phone!

Not yet, I have a copy, and I am working on a CWM flash-able zip that will not care about the crapware, and I also leaked it to lfaber06, to include in his stuff too.

I'm used to flashing a different rom everyday and doing various tweaks so with this locked bootloader thing going on its going to be a little bit of a struggle for me not being able to do the norm.

[Verizon]How do you freeze OTA updates from occurring?

With rumors of Verizon possibly pushing an OTA update to the S3, I'd like to disable or block this process from occurring. Is there a way to do this without root?

Verizon auto-pushes with no confirmation?
Install apex launcher. Make a shortcut, choose activities and find SDM and choose the one that says defer general. Open the shortcut you just made and it allows you to set a defer update date.

It's illegal to push an OTA and not give you the option to confirm the install. You can always decline.

There supposedly is an AT&T update that takes away the universal search from the Google bar. That's not an update. At this point in time, I don't want the phone updating itself. Reading other posts, it seems one can defer the update, but I'm not sure how long one can do that.

I dont have my phone until later today but in the past I would edit the build.prop (ro.build.fingerprint=) to have the release keys be the same as the ota. This would trick it into thinking that you already have the ota and not bug you about it anymore.

How To Trick your phone into thinking it already has OTA.
You will need to be Rooted
You will Need To Obtain a Copy of the OTA Build.prop located in the system folder of the ota.
1. Place OTA build.prop on your device somewhere for you to access.
2. Mount File System using ES File Explorer (Navigate to menu/settings and check box "Root Explorer" and the check box "Mount File System"
3. Open the OTA build.prop and copy the txt of the (ro.build.fingerprint=) and close it.
4. Navigate to /system/build.prop and open it.
5. Navigate to (ro.build.fingerprint=) and paste/replace contents from OTA version. Save. Reboot.
No OTA Notification. Until the next OTA At least
