[Verizon]How do you freeze OTA updates from occurring? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

With rumors of Verizon possibly pushing an OTA update to the S3, I'd like to disable or block this process from occurring. Is there a way to do this without root?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I too would like to know this. I've uninstalled pretty much all the crap with TB, but I wanna make sure it won't automatically update.

Verizon auto-pushes with no confirmation?

Install apex launcher. Make a shortcut, choose activities and find SDM and choose the one that says defer general. Open the shortcut you just made and it allows you to set a defer update date.

I've had my rezound try and auto push updates before. Tell it no, and come back to it in my custom recovery having failed, even though I told it no.

It's illegal to push an OTA and not give you the option to confirm the install. You can always decline.

I have a stock, unrooted AT&T SIII, running apex launcher and tried your suggestion. There is no SDM activity listed. Is there any other way with a stock phone to prevent auto updates, besides clicking the decline button?
There supposedly is an AT&T update that takes away the universal search from the Google bar. That's not an update. At this point in time, I don't want the phone updating itself. Reading other posts, it seems one can defer the update, but I'm not sure how long one can do that.

Not according to Asus. They pushed updates to the transformer prime without notice. The recent one was for the gps dangle.

Should be but it's not really. My rezound tried almost every night to install the update. I would wake up and my phone would be in recovery after failing to update because of having a custom recovery. Finally update my Rom so it would stop

I dont have my phone until later today but in the past I would edit the build.prop (ro.build.fingerprint=) to have the release keys be the same as the ota. This would trick it into thinking that you already have the ota and not bug you about it anymore.

How To Trick your phone into thinking it already has OTA.
You will need to be Rooted
You will Need To Obtain a Copy of the OTA Build.prop located in the system folder of the ota.
1. Place OTA build.prop on your device somewhere for you to access.
2. Mount File System using ES File Explorer (Navigate to menu/settings and check box "Root Explorer" and the check box "Mount File System"
3. Open the OTA build.prop and copy the txt of the (ro.build.fingerprint=) and close it.
4. Navigate to /system/build.prop and open it.
5. Navigate to (ro.build.fingerprint=) and paste/replace contents from OTA version. Save. Reboot.
No OTA Notification. Until the next OTA At least

it depends on what you've modified/removed. If you haven't removed any of the "bloat" the phone should recieve OTAs fine. If you have it should still receive them, but depending on what the update is trying to patch it will most likely fail.

^ This is accurate. The OTA updates will check to make sure the phone is "stock" before installing. They will download fine, just won't install.
I had this problem on my mytouch 3g. I deleted the amazon mp3 app from my stock rom and the froyo update failed. Big pain in the ass.

Correct. When I finally copied the amazon mp3 app back to where it was supposed to be the update installed without incident.
If you want to remove the bloatware, DON'T delete it. Use Root Explorer to MOVE it to a safe place on your sdcard so you can MOVE it back if you want to receive an ota.
If you install a custom rom, ALWAYS keeps a nandroid of stock in case you want to go back and receive OTAs.

So it doesn't rename the app or anything? I was thinking I could manually do the same with Root Explorer by renaming bloatware from *.apk to *.bloat or something. In fact, maybe I'll do that...

No, hboot is where you check for s-off.
Power off phone.
Pull and reinsert battery just to be sure you're truly OFF.
Hold vol down + power until you get to a white screen. THAT'S hboot.
From here the phone should auto-detect pd15img.zip and prompt you to start the update. DON'T TOUCH IT UNTIL COMPLETE.

Looks like a Verizon S3 ota update is imminent

Nothing too earth shattering if you read the official statement from Verizon, but may have a fix for those with SIM troubles.

right, the safest way to update is to restore back to stock, stock kernel, and DEFINITELY re-lock your bootloader if you have it unlocked.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Not while rooted....Can brick your phone I heard.
Do not update if u are rooted.
Well if you can't update while rooted, what are you supposed to do if it auto updates? I was just sitting in bed and noticed that my notification went off on my phone and not on my tablet (meaning not email). I checked the phone and if I hadn't noticed it would have auto updated and I am rooted on stock. It said the update would start in 3 minutes after I heard the notification. I deferred until tomorrow and have my phone how I want it, so I really don't want to go back to stock. I suppose I could make a nandroid.
It really scares me though that Verizon almost pushed an update that could have potentially bricked my phone. I don't think that is right, quite honestly.

[Q] Auto-Update: Can it be disabled?

The root for 2.20 was just released, but I won't be able to do it for a few days and I'm worried an AT&T update might fix it. Right after I got my HOX, the 2.2 update showed up and I was hesitant to accept it because I heard that the new update would stop rooting. I declined, but next time it came up it didnt ask me if I wanted to update. Is there a way to make sure this doesnt happen again?
Thanks in advance.

Everything it starts to automatically download the update factory reset and delete the part it had downloaded off your phone
There is an apk called updater or something like that. Just uninstall or freeze it, and you will never get the OTA update notifications again. This has been discussed before in multiple other threads, so do a search for the full details.
Grab Voodoo OTA rootkeeper from the play store and back up your root just in case if you are running the stock Rom. The JB update has broken root on many devices and will be coming soon for ATT One X. Voodoo has been able to restore it after JB.

To the OP, I would not worry about a few days. AT&T and HTC do not move that fast (oh if they could--we'd have JB by now!).

still downloading. it took forever to "check for update". Some apps have updates (like Facebook) that give option to add the app to an SD card. This is probably what it is. Im a noob to android btw.. just letting people know an update is out.
I do not think this is wise, but I think the update is a patch that blocks the loki unlock the devs achieved. need to be careful with these updates as the devs have warned us about. I could be wrong here.
Oh well. let us know the outcome if you don't mind.

You are correct - it's usually a good idea to hold off on taking any OTA updates before knowing what they do. To keep from getting OTA updates, use something like Titanium backup to freeze or otherwise disable three specific apps:
Aou said:
Correct. To block future OTA updates, "Freeze" the following three applications:
AT&T Software update Vxx_x_xxxx_x_x
FWUpgrade x.x.x
LocalFOTA vx_xxxx_x_x
Freezing (with Titanium Backup) will keep them from running, and effectively hide them from the rest of your system. Otherwise, you may find a way to backup and uninstall them completely, but this is more risky if you're ever planning to take an OTA update in the future.

Mainly a update to KNOX.
Have to see if theres a modem update. If there is thats all thats important for me. And if they patched Loki.
Talked to ATT, app2sd, audio clipping issue with headphones fix, removed a wallpaper and added 2 back, and some msging fix. I think there was a few other things as well, he said a security patch as well, but no real information on what.

I'll take the risk and attempt to download the patch without letting it install, and post its contents here. Wish me luck.
Well, plenty of warning has been given about waiting to apply this update until it is cleared as safe, so if anyone decides to ignore the warnings, too bad. If it's safe, it'll be known soon enough. I'm just wondering how many other threads will be made about it...anyone taking bets?

I don't believe so. You need root to rename System services or uninstall them, especially a service to stop polling for OTA. What you need to do is rename "sdm 1.0", which is a System app, to "sdm 1.0.bak" but I'm almost positive this wouldn't last through a reboot for you since you're stock. Try it and see but it should not work.
