Is there a way to force updates? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondered if there was a way in which I could force an update? I've had to revert back to stock firmware and am currently on 2.3.1. Ive tried the CHECKIN method but nothing happened. Any suggestions guys?

you can manually push the update through recovery located here:

Nope..
Do look for the thread titled '2.3.3 link' though. It's rather easy to apply it manually.

Thanks guys
I have done that method before but I think it screwed up my mms hence I would rather receive it OTA just incase. Are they still pushing out the 2.3.2 update for us that are yet to receive 2.3.3?

Probably not. They would probably send you the version that goes from whatever you're on to 2.3.3 since the Android 2.3.3 URL thread has like three different versions.
The alternative is to flash a custom ROM such as CM7, Axura, GingerS, MoDaCo which features 2.3.3 (unsure about GingerS)

I still don't get the 2.3.3 OTA either. Since I had some problem when I was using N1 and tried to update it manually, I decide to wait for OTA in my NS. I am curious why it can take so long time to push out an OTA?

Two reasons: network strain and damage control in the event of Problems.

I'm waiting for the OTA to come through to my other halves new NS which we got yesterday to update from 2.3.1 to either 2.3.2 or better still 2.3.3 but, guess it ain't happening any time soon :-(

Force update in post #2 that I linked. This is the same file you would get from the OTA. All the OTA does is bring a dialog box saying its available for you and it goes to that link. The link was achieved using aLogCat. It's directly from *.google.com

how to force update
Picked up my NS on saturday (so it should be running 2.3.1 right?) Anyway when I go into settings-about phone-system update it says i have latest version. I am fairly confident this is not so. So how do I force update to my NS?

Search for the thread titled '2.3.3 link' and do it manually or wait until you get it pushed down to you. There it's no way to force it OTA (over-the-air)

No offense to the OP, but I find it very odd that people buy a "pure Google experience" android device then manage to forget to use Google.

[Q] Why can't I get OTA upgrade from google?

My Nexus S' version is 2.3.2(It's from T-mobile).
I haven't gotten any OTA 2.3.3 from google.
When I enter number *#*#2432546#*#*, it is not working.
I know how to upgrade 2.3.3 manually.
But why can't I get OTA?
Does google stop sending it?
Same here 8/

Most of us are aware we can manually update. I'd really like to know why when i nandroid back to my 2.3.2 stock image the OTA is never received.
Kind of makes me thinks google has pulled the update and hence it might even be better for me to stay on 2.3.2 if google is not keen to keep pushing 2.3.3?

T-Mobile Update

I have a T-Mobile Update Service notification in my notifications bar. Did we just get Gingerbread? Or is this an update to my ROM (GingerClone)?
Anyone got info on it? Is it safe to update OTA while on a custom ROM?
--
Sent from Sidekick
I don't think it would be safe to update while on a custom rom. Since it's an update it would need the original rom to update from. But I'm very curious as to what it is. If it's got fixes and optimization then maybe we could build new or better pre-existing custom roms using the new tweaks.
We need someone to be a guinea pig, lol. I don't have enough experience to odin and recover from anything severe, should anything happen.
I'm odining back to stock to try to update now, and yes, you can't update with a custom rom. you must be completely stock to update. so i'll test it and post instructions.
EDIT: http://support.t-mobile.com/message/6140#6140
According to this, this update is just a bugfix, not gingerbread.
An Over the Air software update for the Sidekick 4G will be pushed to customers beginning the night of July 21.. This software update will be delivered in staggered waves, with several thousand customers receiving it each night over the next several days.
The OTA updates the software version to version T839UVKG2. This is not an operating system upgrade to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). This maintenance release includes various bug fixes and enhancements based on customer feedback.
Accept and install the update as it includes many important fixes that will improve your experience with this device.

If it drops on the SDcard as an update.zip, can you post it so we may all get it early?
Is it not as simple anymore? Or can someone post the Full Odin image?
It downloads to /cache, but I'll get the update.zip posted when I get the ota request again, as I haven't gotten it again after odining yet.

my phone never recieved the update notification?
it's a staggered rollout, so you'll get it sometime within the next few days. It won't work unless you're stock without root.
How is a /cache update applied?
(I know we will be given instructions when it's posted... I am just curious.)
That's just where the update downloads from T-mobile. It will be a regular update.zip when it is posted.
I think my phone has already downloaded the update file. Its asking to install. I don't want to install or odin. How do I stop the notification from showing up on the status bar?

My wife got it this morning on hers but I did not get it on mine yet. I will let you know if I notice any changes but she is out running errands so I don't have a chance to look at it yet.
Not sure what it fixes but it IS ok to install on the smooth maximus ginger clone. I did it by accident and everything seems to be working just fine.

There's going to be a lot of cheap g2x for sale on kijiji and craigslist.
This is 100% right. There was a post on the T-Mobile community page for RSA's yesterday. Since I work for T-Mobile i saw this as well. The OTA is v21e so it is the same version as the LG updater.T-Mobile also has it listed that if you do not want to do the OTA, to use the LG updater and update that way. This is a Official msg relased to all t-mobile employe's yesterday.

So all I need to do is keep cwm, restore my stock ROM that I had backed up as soon as I nvflashed cwm, and then I should get an OTA update in which I will then lose root and cwm and be at 2.3.3 stock? Correct?
I'm not seeing the OTA update. It says I have the current version. I restored a backup I made right before I started installing ROMs so my current info is Kernel 2.6.32.9, Software Version V10F, Baseband March 17, and Android 2.2.2. I also restored the stock recovery.
Any ideas? Does the OTA roll out slowly?

I think that's what people were doing with the LG update so I don't see why it would be different for OTA.
Many people got bricked g2x's so I'm worried, and your saying you did a stock recovery so I'm wondering why if you didn't have to
I have 2.2 but my baseband version its july 15 .I can't do the update via lg software, it says that im uptodate :/ .. how can I get the old baseband version?

T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread OTA Update Resumes

After a not-so-smooth attempt at rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread for T-Mobile G2X users, experience-breaking bugs ran rampant throughout users’ phones prompting T-Mobile and LG to suspend updates. It took quite a while for them to get things ironed out, actually, as I almost forgot that the T-Mobile G2x even exists. In any case, the Gingerbread rollout is back on for those who are sick of frozen treats. Alongside Gingerbread, you’re also apparently getting improved battery life for your troubles. Yay! Get to the link ahead for the full instructions from LG. [LG via Droid Dog]
As of December 5, T-Mobile will restart the rollout of the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Over-The-Air (OTA) update!
If you would like to update your software before receiving the OTA, please visit the LG website (link to: http://wwwstg.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/G2X-Driver/index.jsp) to update your device today.
The G2x Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update includes the following benefits:
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS
Improved battery life
Improved front-facing camera operation when using Qik record and share
Improved disabling of Car Home
Helps address unexpected reboots

What do I do now?

For those that are saying, "It's the same update".. how do you know there hasn't been any changes during a 5mo delay? I'm not saying it isn't the same update, but people just typing it on a computer screen doesn't make it true.

It doesnt make sence why would they just stop only to start the same garbage update again? They have to have fixed it some. Maybe it is still 2.3.3 but its gotta be different. I would have hoped that they would roll out the 2.3.4 that they used in italy for the o2x. At the very least they should have fixed the stupid camera. I could be wrong but it just doesnt make any sence to me

Simply root your phone and choose any rom you like. No need to wait for an update.
I bought my phone 26the December, I kept checking for update never got one then I read post it will only update to latest one since they have stopped it temporary u will either have to root/ do it manually or just wait

The update strategy of google is really confusing :
No dates, no indication, no explanations why they stopped OTA. The most surprising thing to me is : why stopping 2.3.6 OTA while the problem is about the 4.0.3 version?
Its for a couple of days m8 most people would be hacked of if they had to update there fine every to minutes

No need to unlock bootloader if you're flashing stock ROM
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
If you want to go stock(no root, no unlocked bootloader, no custom recovery) wouldn't recommend updating to ICS OTA, since there is that battery drain bug, that has yet to be fixed.
Also downgrading back to GB is quite tricky, if not imposible without unlocking the phone.
there's no bug, they just paused it, you can download it from here and just rename it and flash through the stock recovery!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
But why to flash if there is a battery bug for most of people. You got to be lucky.

I haven't had a problem
