I have a T-Mobile Update Service notification in my notifications bar. Did we just get Gingerbread? Or is this an update to my ROM (GingerClone)?
Anyone got info on it? Is it safe to update OTA while on a custom ROM?

Sent from Sidekick
I don't think it would be safe to update while on a custom rom. Since it's an update it would need the original rom to update from. But I'm very curious as to what it is. If it's got fixes and optimization then maybe we could build new or better pre-existing custom roms using the new tweaks.
We need someone to be a guinea pig, lol. I don't have enough experience to odin and recover from anything severe, should anything happen.
I'm odining back to stock to try to update now, and yes, you can't update with a custom rom. you must be completely stock to update. so i'll test it and post instructions.
EDIT: http://support.t-mobile.com/message/6140#6140
According to this, this update is just a bugfix, not gingerbread.
An Over the Air software update for the Sidekick 4G will be pushed to customers beginning the night of July 21.. This software update will be delivered in staggered waves, with several thousand customers receiving it each night over the next several days.
The OTA updates the software version to version T839UVKG2. This is not an operating system upgrade to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). This maintenance release includes various bug fixes and enhancements based on customer feedback.
Accept and install the update as it includes many important fixes that will improve your experience with this device.

If it drops on the SDcard as an update.zip, can you post it so we may all get it early?
Is it not as simple anymore? Or can someone post the Full Odin image?
It downloads to /cache, but I'll get the update.zip posted when I get the ota request again, as I haven't gotten it again after odining yet.

my phone never recieved the update notification?
it's a staggered rollout, so you'll get it sometime within the next few days. It won't work unless you're stock without root.
How is a /cache update applied?
(I know we will be given instructions when it's posted... I am just curious.)
That's just where the update downloads from T-mobile. It will be a regular update.zip when it is posted.
I think my phone has already downloaded the update file. Its asking to install. I don't want to install or odin. How do I stop the notification from showing up on the status bar?

we'll have to wait and see what is included in the update if Tmo specifies .. hopefully they will as they do the other devices
My wife got it this morning on hers but I did not get it on mine yet. I will let you know if I notice any changes but she is out running errands so I don't have a chance to look at it yet.
Not sure what it fixes but it IS ok to install on the smooth maximus ginger clone. I did it by accident and everything seems to be working just fine.

Decided to check for updates and there finally appeared to be one so I started the download & it took about 10mins or less then it asked to install so I hit ok then it said it would restart the phone. I was excitedfor about 10 seconds until I noticed everything was still the same and it said no update was applied at this time... Was this an official update n if so is there a way to apply it without having to wait on the 24hr update timer?

Sorry to say but I don't know much users here who use the stock 2.1 Eclair unless they are returning their phones. As much as I know, everyone here hates how Samsung and AT&T leave their customers out in the cold for updates and any information on upcoming updates. Maybe someone else here will give you an answer hopefully.

and my baseband version is I897UCJF6. used to be ucjh7
You must have been excited, seeing how you posted to XDA that there's an update before you knew what was what...

Date at the top of that is 11/02/2011.
On a side note, the middle section where it says, "If you have downloaded & upgraded previously with Kies Mini, an automatic update to build 11011_4 may occur." I just started Mini Kies and it updated to 11014_6 so maybe there is something to it.

Still failed install after the download over the air. so i did it through kies mini and it was .ucjh7
I wouldnt have gotten so excited if i paid attention to my notes that i had ucjh7 pre-flash and just "eclair" post factory default reset. Yet somehow still had a glimmer of hope that 2.2 would update after ucjh7, assuming one has to be installed b4 the other/in order. Sort of annoying the link was taken down about the Q/A on 2.2 being available. I just clicked the circle to vote "very dissatisfied" hah
Im still planning to trade mine in for the atrix if its in store by 3/9.. If not, I havent quite decided what other path I will take...
Just wondered if there was a way in which I could force an update? I've had to revert back to stock firmware and am currently on 2.3.1. Ive tried the CHECKIN method but nothing happened. Any suggestions guys?
you can manually push the update through recovery located here:

I have done that method before but I think it screwed up my mms hence I would rather receive it OTA just incase. Are they still pushing out the 2.3.2 update for us that are yet to receive 2.3.3?

Probably not. They would probably send you the version that goes from whatever you're on to 2.3.3 since the Android 2.3.3 URL thread has like three different versions.
The alternative is to flash a custom ROM such as CM7, Axura, GingerS, MoDaCo which features 2.3.3 (unsure about GingerS)
I still don't get the 2.3.3 OTA either. Since I had some problem when I was using N1 and tried to update it manually, I decide to wait for OTA in my NS. I am curious why it can take so long time to push out an OTA?
Two reasons: network strain and damage control in the event of Problems.
I'm waiting for the OTA to come through to my other halves new NS which we got yesterday to update from 2.3.1 to either 2.3.2 or better still 2.3.3 but, guess it ain't happening any time soon :-(

Force update in post #2 that I linked. This is the same file you would get from the OTA. All the OTA does is bring a dialog box saying its available for you and it goes to that link. The link was achieved using aLogCat. It's directly from *.google.com

My daughter's phone this morning had an update from T-Mobile. I told her not to install it, as it may revoke root.
She clicked on it (kids....), but luckily it says it's been post-poned until the 22nd (tomorrow)..
Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it is?
I know any OTA updates may potentiall revoke root, but just wondering if anyone else has gotten this.
The worst it could do is overwrite your root, but it wouldn't take that ability away, you would just need to re-root it after the update was completed. I heard some rumors that KJ2 was being pushed out as an official update, but I'm not entirely sure.
It's 100% true or i wouldn't have posted it. I got the update via Kies. It's coming OTA soon.

Whats KJ2?
Also im running Gingerbreak on it, if it revokes the root, would the thing even boot up?
I got it today. No obvious changes but it does seem to work a bit smoother.
Gingerbreak? you mean GingerClone? Gingerbreak is the rooting method for Gingerbread (2.3).
KD1 was the original stock firmware, then they pushed KG2 as an update, and the latest update is KJ2, which includes some bugfixes and not many other changes.
You can still root after the update. KJ2 is seriously worth it. The phone runs so smoothly now. Although, I still think this is TM's way of staving us off until they release GB. XD

is anything else different? I generally try to let others test the waters first, since the last "update" merely removed a useful shortcut function and added Google Books as bloat.

I went ahead and grabbed the update off Kies. So far, it looks like the persistent memory leak issues have been addressed in the Touchwiz/Zipwip software package. Also, my battery performance has returned to what I expected with KD1 (given my device's configuration).
I haven't encountered any drawbacks to upgrading. No reason to stick with KG2 or KD1 at this point--unless you fell in love with a custom...

I am running gingerclone as well, i got the notice for the update but postponed it, I didn't know if it would be safe to run since i wasn't on a stock rom, I got tired of seeing the update icon so i let it run, it failed.
The phone rebooted and I have not seen the update notice again.
I have TouchMIUIwiz v3 and I also ran the update after getting sick of the constant reminder and icon. It failed and disappears for a few days then come back. I've repeated the process a few times now.
Update installed fine for her and nothing is too different. Safe to go.

After a not-so-smooth attempt at rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread for T-Mobile G2X users, experience-breaking bugs ran rampant throughout users’ phones prompting T-Mobile and LG to suspend updates. It took quite a while for them to get things ironed out, actually, as I almost forgot that the T-Mobile G2x even exists. In any case, the Gingerbread rollout is back on for those who are sick of frozen treats. Alongside Gingerbread, you’re also apparently getting improved battery life for your troubles. Yay! Get to the link ahead for the full instructions from LG. [LG via Droid Dog]
As of December 5, T-Mobile will restart the rollout of the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Over-The-Air (OTA) update!
If you would like to update your software before receiving the OTA, please visit the LG website (link to: http://wwwstg.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/G2X-Driver/index.jsp) to update your device today.
The G2x Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update includes the following benefits:
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS
Improved battery life
Improved front-facing camera operation when using Qik record and share
Improved disabling of Car Home
Helps address unexpected reboots

It doesnt make sence why would they just stop only to start the same garbage update again? They have to have fixed it some. Maybe it is still 2.3.3 but its gotta be different. I would have hoped that they would roll out the 2.3.4 that they used in italy for the o2x. At the very least they should have fixed the stupid camera. I've kept my phone on its stock ROM and unrooted, and it looks like my waiting finally paid off! Hoping you're right, and that this is a pre-req for the upcoming ICS release. Maybe this will coincide with the T-mo release of the Blaze Q (QWERTY version of the Blaze 4G)?
Also, has this update gone live yet? I'm using WiFi at the moment and so far I get a message saying there isn't an update available from the server
Can someone confirm if I have to be unrooted?

just because u said u don't like touchwiz made me answer this more
to return to unrooted stock you need to use the stock LB7 tar file and the blaze.pit file and Odin back to stock

And you can always wait as soon as Kies updates tomorrow with LF4 i'll download and decrypt it and use it for base no my build 5 for dknight which is going to add some awesome stuff on top of the already awesome stuff

Update is live through Kies as of 9am cst. You lose CWM through the update and cannot be rooted.
So will the current CWM and rooting methods be ok to be used again? I hate bloat
How long did it take for the update to work via Kies?
I started the firmware download, and once the download finished Kies kind of.. froze. Didn't see any activity in task manager, phone didn't show anything besides the normal home screen. Disconnected the phone with no ill effects fortunately.
Probably because I'm running Windows 8 release preview.. will try on my other Windows 7 rig
