Browser lag - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking of buying a Nexus S and my question is, did ICS finally fix the browser lag? I had the NS back when it came out and remember this issue vividly. I'm coming from a G2x.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium

I know the Galaxy Nexus has zero lag (i have one)
so maybe its iCS
if not..
buy a Galaxy Nexus

Anybody else got any feedback? I'm itching to get my hands on ICS and want to make sure that HW accel in the browser is enabled in the NS before I buy it.

if you explain how lag is manifested i can test it and send report back to you.
Ive got nexus s updated via OTA to ICS

Back in last December, pages that had images were really hard to scroll through. Maybe they even fixed it with an update already, I just don't know. We had the issue open with Google but since moving to the G2x I unsubscribed from it. The browser would scroll at like 1-2fps. I just want to know if the browser is now smooth with h/w accel in ICS.
Somebody posted a vid:
http://vimeo.com/30050423
Also, the comments here say performance has been improved, even though this is just the alpha that was available before and not the OTA. I think I'm going to get it. I'm tired of all the G2x issues.

well i can tell you i often open msn.com desktop version and i didnt notice any lag, except in ICS when you zoom in (using pinch) it blurs images and text (showing them using lower resolution or something, they look very ugly) and once you stop zooming it shows full resolution text/images.
Scrolling through site goes like butter, smooth.
I just tried it one more time, opened yahoo.com full site and also scrolled through without any glitches!
I hope this is what you want, and that i was any help for you!

Yes sir, that is indeed what I wanted to hear! I'll go see if the guy still has the NS for sale then.

Im glad...
although you should be aware of "android os" battery draing bug, i got it, and i read around there is lots of people complaining about it even owners of galaxy nexus. But i believe they will resolve this problems..

Quick live wallpapers+sticking?

First off am I the only one that wishes the original opengl would stick? Performance was alot better for that one (especially for the nexus wallpaper). Is getting the performance of the original live wallpaper we had and the sticking of the new patch possible? Right now that is the only problem stopping my phone from being the sex.
EDIT: Problem seems to happen when another widget is updated. Its not perfectly smooth, but not bad, but when a widget updates it really slows down the wallpaper to a noticeable halt. I doubt im the first to notice this, but for anyone else that really wants nexus wallpaper, having less widgets on your main page seems to help.
I moved the news+weather widget you see below to another page and it seems to jitter less.
I agree. Losing the performance from the new OpenGL isn't worth having LWP's. They might have a fix for this when Toast's Awesome Sauce ROM is complete.

Ive wanted them ever since i saw them and i think its pretty awesome
that we can run them @ all on a phone that has half the horsepower
as their intended to run on. be happy you have the option. If you like
them i dont really exp all this slowdown everyone is crying about now

hunt you down and put them in your phone.........so the choice is yours
but no sense in being anything other than greatful for what we have atm
unless you have something to help us improve the issue as it stands.
Maybe you could try to solve the issue for us rather than wasting your time

patch for them to stick on another phone. My goal was getting them to

Yeah I disagree with "there is no point in having them if it is slower".......the patch works pretty dam well with most wallpapers its just the peski nexus being alittle to slow to be usable for me. MagnusRagnarok my OP was not an attack on you at all. I am extremely thankful for what you have done, and hope you have not taken my post that way. I am just trying to see if more people feel the same way as me. For me getting the nexus one wallpaper running alittle bit better would get me closer to completing my phone.
Ill bump since I edited my first post. Hopefully someone finds it helpful.

Hey guys, I know a lot of us have been dying to get the nexus wallpaper working without having to do the opengl fix to make wallpapers stick, seeing as it made the wallpaper ran really choppy. I found a way to get it to stick, run smooth, and not have to change the opengl. I used the update zip posted by emerica6541 and it stuck right on and have ran smooth ever since. Granted he did modify the wallpaper so the lights are smaller, but I think it looks better that way on our heroes due to the smaller screen. It has survived multiple reboots, and over 30 mins of sleep time. I am running darch's legend rom though, so I'm not sure if this will work for damage's or flipz's roms, but its worth a shot.

Thank you very much for the post. I have tried flashing that before and it did not seem to work (this is on a fresh build). Ill try again, if not maybe a kind soul could look at it and see how to port onto fresh/damage build.
This is the point of the thread, not to shoot down other's hard work but to improve on it....I think thats what xda is about.

Just a note though, when you first set the wallpaper, your phone will freeze for a min, then it'll take you to the bootscreen. Once it reloads, you should be good to go.

I had it on my sd. Sadly it does not seem to make any difference. It is smooth enough (alittle bit jittery but not too bad) but once a widget updates it stops just like the other version of nexus wallpaper.

Oh no, i am running the new openGL. I will try the old one thanks! Should have read your original post better.
One thing that is weird is that the LWP stick with the old openGL if its plugged into the computer. Does the phone not sleep if its plugged into a computer?

[Q] Performance Problems whit Transformer Eee Pad

Hi there..
Im very disappointed whit the performance from Eee Pad. Moving between the screens is not fluent, after installing the Prime Rom v1.5 it was better, but thats not the only one issue..
So, first as wrote: Moving betweens the screens, not fluent, then moving in the App Menu, not fluent too.
Seccond problems and which are very important for me, if this Eee Pad is for a normal daily use or not, whit my experience in the last two day, more not than yes.
Biggest performace issue, i think it have something whit the flash, is browsing and the market. The response time in browser is more than bad, sometimes the browser need two/three secconds to execute a command like a simple click on a link button. Writing in a forum its very terrible, the capitals comes to late, sometimes it skip some capitals or free space between the words, the keyboard have lags and its not fast.. Sometimes the page didnt show correct, the only way to get it right, close the browser and open it again.
If i browse in the market at the same time im in internet, the scrolling is so ****ing slow and so ****ing laggy, its really not acceptable.. the scroll speed in the browser self is not much better..
This problem stil exist, it does not matter stock or custom rom..
Im really really disappointed about this, i paid the device 650CHF, its around 500€ maybe more, but my galaxy s 2 works much better and faster, really its not a joke!!
My question at you, did somebody share this experience whit me or im alone whit this opinion??
If some DEV read this Theard, then i would ask it all, is there a fix which we get soon to fix this performance problems? Otherwise, i will sell this device..
Many thanks!
Best regards,
Adnan.
Don't have the issues you describe. I had the zoom before as well as a ipad. Maybe you got a bad one our your expectations are too high for a tablet?
I would have it checked out...nothing but great performance on mine...

Thers some performance problems but not many now, many are problems with honeycomb and tegra aupport since theyre both relatively new. Did you do a clean flash of prime 1.5 and overclock? That seemed to fix a lot of problems for me. Honeycomb 3.2 should fix a lot of problems and hopefully it wil be available to us within the next few weeks.
Weird. I don't have any of those problems, except making a post on this forum takes forever for the letters to show up in the box.

*smile thats the question, is it my pad, or is it me.. but i dont wont to game whit it, everything what i need is 100% working browser and device, whitout lags, everything fluent whit no hangs.. thats it..
take a look on this review, --> title in youtube --> iPad 2 vs Asus EEE Pad Transformer - quick comparison <-- i have the same problems, and maybe bit more.. you see when hi try to scroll, it works after third try, or when hi try to press the full screen button for video play.. so when you the whole day press everything two three times, its very bad.. move betweens the screens its not so bad, bud not fluent..

Have you tried installing system panel, then loading the kill all widget, the white X looks the best and goes with the desktop weather app etc. Just click on it to end processes. I stopped using a task killer on my HTC Desire HD with 2.3 but think Honeycomb still needs one at this moment in time. Opera mobile sorts lag in typing on XDA, also great for pinch and zoom in youtube web page.

[Q] browser Performance

i just asked myself something and maybe someone could held me out. is there anychance we can hope for a better browser performance for our sensation? as i see the browser of de galaxy2 is hardware accelerated but not of our sensation. And the browser performance on my friends stock samsung galaxy s2 is still far smoother then on our heavily tuned sensation (InsertCoin 2.2.1 ROM for me)
im a bit disappointed of this browser performance
Really? Honest question: what lags for you? I haven't come accross a single webpage that even stutters. I want to try it on my phone.

honest answer:
just try the xda main forum (overview of all phones)
this ist just not acceptable. It laggs like f**king hell. Not all pages lag though. Though i recognize mini stutter and short lags on most of the pages. I really dont like this.
And i must say im always using the desktop view, not the mobile view.
and i cannot understand why a "dualcore" 1.2ghz!!! CPU is not able do render a webpage at 30fps. This lag feels like about 10fps browsing the xda Main Forum.
Even my old ancient pentium2 266mhz notebook is able to handle this page fluid.
Whats going wrong?
I know exactly what you're talking about, and if the Galaxy S2 can do that smoothly, that's awesome. But as far as usability goes, and me coming from a Galaxy S with Cyanogen.... it's way faster.
But I draw the line at usability. I used to go to www.ablogtoread.com often on the Galaxy S just to be completely slaughtered by a near completely lock up. I can browse that fine now.
The hardware acceleration does cause a tangible decrease in battery life as well. That's one side effect. Maybe someone can shed some light on this, maybe there is a hardware accelerated browser down the pipeline? Maybe Cyanogen will come through with that?
It's probably not what you want to read, but have you given Opera a try? It is way smoother than the stock browser, at least a far as rendering/scrolling. If you want to give that a try, get the bigger version of it from the market. I can't speak about the smaller one, but I think it is not as fast or as full featured as its big brother.

Everything is very smooth, the UI, scrolling, pinch zoom,... Opera is supposed to be hardware accelerated, probably that's why
Swyped from my HTC Sensation
I think Opera on my Galaxy S 1 was smoother than the stock browser on the Sensation. Now, all browsers are not perfect (in fact, it renders the main page for xda forums very incorrectly and unpleasantly, at least as far as color goes, lol) so see if Opera is right for you.

gonna try opera in the next few minutes and try to share experience.
Still i gotta say im using the Dolphin HD browser and not the original browser, this is even worse
tried opera now and i must say that it is really a lot smoother then dolphin! Not as smooth as the sgs2 but near already. Only downside is the slow loading performance when loading other pages. Dont know why but dolphin loads pages almost twice as fast.
Damn couldnt be the two just be combined and we could enjoy a really superb browser
Hope theres still some performance optimations lleft for our device

i mostly never had an issue with browser performance on sensation. may be once in a while i will see some delay in loading the page, but that may be due to spotty t-mobile network.

HBO GO for android tablets

I was happily surprised to notice this app hit the market a few weeks ago. Unfortunately i downloaded it, and of course it doesn't work. The app loaded fine,..looks great...feels great...but when you go to play a show it plays the HBO promo video and the TV-MA thing and then that's it. Just sits there with a spinning circle.
Anyone have a similar experience?
I'm using a TF101 with revolver ics 4.1.1 with guevors kernel.
Luckily with the recently flashed revolver, the HBO GO website actually works really well. With the stock Honeycomb and Megatron CM9 it was choppy and grainy, and constantly freezing and changing bitrates. Now the video plays perfectly with what looks like 720p, or close to it. Still, the app would be nice because navigating the website through the browser is clunky as hell.
I did manage to get the old app working with the workaround, but the quality is actually not as good as the website , and it's annoying as hell to have to switch back and forth between other apps twice every time you load it.
Anyway, jut wondering if anyone has the same issue. I guess I can live with the site since it actually works well now but the app would be more convenient.

Nope. Seeing as the website now works perfectly now, I really can't complain...so I guess I will just deal with it. The app doesn't support hdmi output anyway so..
works fine for me. watching true blood now
I'm getting the same thing. It'll show the HBO clip followed by the rating then just exit back to the app. It was working when it was first released but as of lately can't stream anything.

Is everyone else having issues with lag?

I went from the HTC One to this, and I am a little disappointed here. The HTC One was beautiful, great, etc, but I went with this phone for a a more future proof reason. The thing I am confused about is how is this phone lagging? The One did not lag, and I am not by any means trying to start up a debate between the two, but why does this phone lag? Anybody experiencing odd lag? (opening closing apps have a hiccup, widgets, scrolling)
The screen seems to have a good amount of ghosting, but I assume that is because this is a PenTile super saturated screen, so it won't be as smooth movement as an LCD screen. (I freakin' love this screen, by the way)
Also, Samsung, I know if I raise the volume it could possible damage my ears, quit popping a message up every time I do this.
Also...
For the stock browser and Chrome, the screen slightly dims itself upon opening, doesn't do it with Firefox though.
Small things, small gripes. These small grips bothering anyone else?
It seems odd, this is my first Samsung device, but it seems like it's not a consistent experience. It just launched, I know, but I did not think one of the big brands would have these issues.

Yup, bloatware. My Galaxy S3 running CM 10.1 was FAST. Patiently waiting.
well htc one is in android 2.1 now it may have the same problem when you upgrade to 4.2 I guess .
To solve the lag, you may turn on Force Gpu option in developer setting, but it causes battery.

That did nothing, but I changed the animations to 0.5x and they go so quick, I don't notice it anymore. I sincerely hope that Samsung/AT&T push out something to fix this, I don't feel like a phone with an overclocked Snapdragon 600 should be going through this.
Set animations to zero and the phone will be even quicker. You won't miss a thing. Good luck.
The lag is very bad. It really makes me wanna throw this device against the wall. Coming from an S3 and Note 2 this feels like a huge downgrade, seriously.
I do know though that now that the boot loader has been unlocked, developers can start making custom roms. That and I know there will be many updates. The lag will not last forever.

That doesn't do anything. The browser, messaging app, and gallery all lag within. Samsung needs to properly optimize their software for the Snapdragon 600.
If your using Nova launcher, go to Nova Settings - Look and Feel - App Animations. Change it to ICS or slide. This has removed any stutter for me with the opening and closing app transitions.

To Op, just be patient and either Samsung or devs here will address it. It's clearly software related.
Also, the screen darkening happens if you have certain battery saving things turned on. Is your energy saver on?

I think he's concerned about a few things. Stuttering as I mentioned before. He mentions opening and closing apps have a hiccup. See below.

I've completely disabled any energy saving, even auto adjust screen tone. This happens only with Chrome and stock browsers. It's a light dimming from brightness being full, seemed odd.

Yes, you're right. They have an odd stutter. The sad thing is, we shouldn't have to do anything to stop this from happening. lol
Also, the stutters happen even when opening/closing/navigating the settings, and I saw it stutter a few times closing the app drawer, that one surprised me.
How do you guys feel about the ghosting/tracers on text or objects when moving quickly?
Oh wow, Force GPU actually did it for me. Thanks! Lol

A couple of quick suggestions:
-Hard Reset when you get the phone. A few people have commented that after a re-flash the phone runs smoother
-disable animations and the screen unlock ripples/light BS. The ripple caused issues with the GS3, so this is just an assumption on my part.
-Force GPU helps
-Freeze and apps especially bloat you don't use.
-Since this seems to be a common issue for everyone, I would hope that Samsung/Att will have a small update in the coming months. I will not hold my breathe though.

This actually does help a lot to reduce the lag.. Did this a few days ago and it has def helped!
I felt the same way about my S3 for a long time until I finally flashed tasks AOKP with ktoonz kernel.
For reference, I think the size of the stock rom on the s4 is somewhere around two gigs as opposed to tasks AOKP which was around 500 or 600 MB's.
I haven't even activated my S4 yet because of the frustration I know I would endure when switching between apps, or texting, or pretty much doing anything.
My S3 is RIDICULOUSLY fast now so I have the utmost confidence that once the Verizon phone is out and the ROMs start rolling in, all the lag will be gone once you get away from TouchWiz.
[edit] Task I see you lurking around the S4 boards. I don't know what it all means, but I LIKE it!!!

Maybe AT&T will push a similar update to help with performance issues.
