Who cares about 2.2 what about 2.3?

Am I the only one that worries more about 2.3 than 2.2? Samsung is literally the last top of the line phone to get 2.2....ridiculous....Will we see 2.3/3.0? I mean this phone should have came with 2.2 or at latest sept. I really expect samsung to support these phones through July 2011. Does anyone else? What's your expectations?

Samsung is notorious for not supporting updates. They'd rather sell new hardware than update what's out already for free. You're lucky you're getting a 2.2 update even if it is taking forever to release, 2.3 is going to be a stretch though.

Word on the street is Nexus S is Galaxy S variant and is running Gingerbread, and since Nexus line is googles developer phone , means source of gingerbread will be available .
I expect easy and smooth port to Captivate by local XDA devs.

We already know the camera is different... I don't think it will be as easy as i9000 to i897.. but yes there is some hope here . Google to the rescue!!!
Actually OP this is why we are all so excited about Cyanogen - BC it has NO Samsung components you can just upgrade to 2.3 once its released.... once cyanogen is final nobody here will be talking about Samsung anymore

It's gonna be quite different. The camera and the soc will be dual core. Could have other hardware different as well.
I wonder how motorola and htc can afford to keep their top phones upgraded and samsung... Doesn't. I mean look at the droid from nov 2009....
I hate to go back to an iPhone next year, but this sucks. Thank god for xda! The devs here should have their own national holiday.

We don't really know anything about its spec just many rumors/fantasy's.
The only thing we do know its a bit curved , possibly a concave display , seen in one of the interview videos.

X10 is not a top of the line device. It was supposed to be out last feb...by the time it came out, middle of the pack at best.
I would not base any standards on a SE device.

we still have a lot of things to play with...I played with Samsung focus and the position of camera&usb&mic I can say it's definitely the same with captivate...

Very true i hate how SAMSUNG doesn't update their devices. I might just get a nexus one now haha

Motorola is supposed to be bringing a dual core phone to AT&T in feb. That's if you like blur. I'm also not sold on dual core either... I mean hello battery drain and for what positives? The soc in our captivate has yet to be pushed by anything android market can throw at it.
The resale value on this phone is gonna be horrible. I sold my 3GS last month for 300. Think in oct 2011 I can sell this phone for 200? Sucks. If the software support was there, they would wipe the floor with apple.

No way. The only reason people are on this forum / using this phone is because this is the only competitive att android. I love android os, but Samsung is so terrible at public relations that nobody will want a phone that never updates and has a broken GPS. You would be lucky to get 200 in 6 months...
Seriously I hope for my sake att doesn't get another good android phone for a while... all the developers will leave this behind

The new dual-core suppose to use less power then current single-core , if its true i wouldn't worrie about power.

on a side note this devce can run custom kernel , so as long as source is release for gingerbread who cares even if its only out for htc it will eventually be ported to SGS , as long as there is a need for it it will happen ...as simple as that ...

See that is exactly how Apple keeps winning the war. Software support. It's an easy Eco system to buy into because the hardware is almost always supported for years. Yes closed systems. But the resale value for notebooks, computers, and iPhones is awesome. My wife will easily be able to pay for her next iPhone by selling the iPhone 4, hell we made 100 profit on both our 3GS. I have bought 2 3GS, an iPad, and a MacBook air.
I really love android and I love the hardware samsung puts out. I just wish they could grasp the concept of full customer support. They just come across as shady salesmen that can't wait to push the next big thing.
If I can't sell my captivate for much $$, I certainly won't be buying the next samsung whatever.

Sorry...I came from a cdma HTC Sprint hero...and people have a right to be pessimistic about all of this. I've been down this road with them where 2.2 was promised..but never delivered..Yes..we could root and flash to other roms including Cyanogen's 2.2 CM6....but..the whole point is getting what was promised to begin with..

The way I see it these companies should make one of the following choices:
1. Sell cellphones with untouched Android. Leave it like wp7 and ios and let google handle software upgrades etc.
2. Have your custom software but support upgrades until hardware is no longer up to par. Maybe make their software downloadable through the market so we just update as needed but can run stock android while waiting.
3. Get out of the cellphone business and just become a hardware manufacture for real cellphone companies that can provide support.
I personally think option 1 is the best.... And most profitable. I mean samsung is stretched pretty thin. They make tvs and washing machines while trying to make cell phones, manufacture chips, and be a software company. Do what you do best and stick with it.

What Samsung ruined.

Does any body think that if Samsung had been on time with updates such as 2.2 and gotten us up to speed at a decent time that we would still be considered an elite phone instead of one just lagging behind?

IMO, the captivate is still elite I love my captivate, even running 100% stock. My friends with iPhone4's even love my captivate.

If the Nexus S turns out to be a Captivate++ with Stock Gingerbread, I am so buying that phone.
Otherwise, with custom ROMs and such we're doing okay.

It's called technology. It will happen to the newly released phones as well. If the phone you have still serves its purpose, then why worry about the next generation? Having something simply because it has higher numbers and is "new" or "revolutionary" is just being foolish and listening to a marketing department. Buy something new because what you have is not allowing you to do something.

I am talking about 2.3 and eventually 3.0 not the phones in general, just us never getting up graded to the next OS.

All things aside I do think its bull**** that they can't roll out 2.2. I mean look at the complexities and flexibilities of the android os, I'm pretty sure if they really wanted to they could roll it out to us. But no they're just a bunch of assholes and....nvm /rage

Samsung has given all the Carriers the froyo builds to push to the phones. Its the Carriers that are taking this long to push it not Samsung...

I don't understand why our phones need to be updated through the CARRIER? Makes absolutely zero sense. Here we are updating our phones ourselves using other methods, why not roll it out in a way that DOESNT use att? makes no sense.

It makes sense because the Captivate was built for AT&T and Samsung and AT&T have a contract that stipulates that the carrier approves the updates and tests them prior to deployment.
If you don't want that situation, then you need to buy a carrier free phone - like the i9000 that was sold unlocked from Expansys and other sites.
If you buy an AT&T (or any other carrier branded phone) then you are stuck waiting for carrier approval. This is true with any brand of phone - Moto, HTC, etc. don't release updates until approved by the carrier.

You're probably right, but I don't think so.
For all we know, the devs of these 2.2 roms work for Google and its just an under the table way of delivering what they know is lacking. Oh what now son oh!

With the only exception maybe being the iPhone. Which I find that I miss more than the abundance of apps, is the timely updates from Apple.

Wow, what a bunch of whining. If you arent savvy enough to install any one of the MANY 2.2 roms out there, why are you complaining that newer, more complicated phones will leave this one in the dust?
Anyways, I think official 2.2 rolls out soon, just got a text from ATT saying an update will be pushed to my phone. Also, this phone has the minimum specs for android 3.0, from what Ive read, so I dont see why you think we wont be seeing android 3.0. With the way we are modifying roms and kernels right now, even if we didnt get an official 3.0 update, Im sure we would be able to at least port it. These phones are monsters, this thing has better specs than my laptop I got 5 years ago that was about 8X the price.

What did the text say? Sounds like you got a JI7 update message, especially if you are already running a 2.2 variant.
All the other 2.2 updates from samsung have been done via Kies, so i doubt that will be pushed 2.2. As for current Roms, most are based on beta 2.2 builds, none are 100% perfect - not that Samsung will do much better

I don't really care anymore when the official 2.2 update will come out. I'm happy sticking with custom roms until the Motorola Atrix comes out. Hopefully it will live up to the hype. The Captivate is my first and last Samsung cell phone I'll ever buy.

I too am just waiting for the atrix. I've never bought a phone off contact but will be forced too cause I bought the captivate with my upgrade. Its not that I'm totally unhappy with the captivate, just upset that samsung has don't so little to ensure that their "flagship" phone stays up to date. Its too bad too cause it has such great potential.

I agree with all of you. I'm fairly pleased with my custom rom too, but feel like it still could be better if devs had source for the cappy.
Also, my first and last Samsung phone. I'm boycotting them altogether. My next phone Sony or Motorola...CES showed off some good stuff. Next flat screen TV Sony prolly, or maybe an LG; def done with Samsung.
Bastards say still testing but steadily releasing new products with Froyo and even GB.
Gonna have to find the money to break my contract with AT&T cause I'm not paying them an upgrade fee.

Yeah, that's the killer. The SGS line was supposed to be their Flagship Android line for the US...got tons of people on board only to essentially abandoned us to work on new products to trick people in to buying. They can't get us an update for this line but they can put the OS on new products without any problems. Just look at what the devs on this forum have done with a FW that's not even for our device. If they can do it, then surely the makers of the damn line could. I hope they crash and burn, market share wise. It may take a while but if they continue this BS with other lines and products people are eventually going to say f-off.

My next phone is going to be either Motorola or HTC. In fact, I just replaced my Samsung TV with a LG. I am done with Samsung all together.

Cry some more? Even when they come out with it, it will just be stripped and modded and redistributed on the forums. The custom ones will be better than anything Samsung will put out.

No doubt...I don't care about the ROM they release; just that source code so the talented devs on this forum can unleash it. I will never run another stock ROM on ANY Android device, ever. This forum is the bomb!!!!

Like others above this is my last Samsung phone ever. Sucks I wasted my upgrade for this crap.
I do appreciate the developers on this forum though for the custom roms. Thanks again!

This is the exact same conversation that everyone was having in the motorola forums with the backflip cliq and cliq xt. Htc is the only ones that have a reputation good for upgrading their phones, but moto and samsung have the best hardware (imo). Cant beat the screen on this thing and every moto I own has been indestructable. So now I buy the phone with the best hardware and community support. I have come to love flashing my phone with something different all the time, whether it be roms or themes, so I will never again buy a phone on the day of release. I will always wait untill the devs behind xda have a go at the device. Then at that point I could care less about manufacturer upgrades

I will never get a samsung android phone.

Samsung has been tweeting the same message since the end of December when they knew they would miss the "End of Year" commitment.
But for all those convinced they are evil, go read the forums and blogs for other phones - all manufacturers miss dates, and many times it is due to carrier involvement. The grass always seems greener elsewhere, but the truth is, the same frustrations exist with all vendors.

Then the choice is clear. Generic non carrier phones.

All you guys high on the Moto Atrix, doesnt Moto lock down the phones so you cant root (easily or at all) ? Every manufacturer has their issues. Im hardly a Samsung fan but Id rather have custom ROM's and Galaxy S seems to allow that without much hassle.

I'm not happy with Samsung by any means, but I also remember waiting for a year for the WinMo update for the HTC Tilt 2 and it came from HTC, not AT$T. It's a tricky balance the relationship these companies have. If a new release borks up a significant number of users it could be a customer service nightmare for both companies with each trying to figure out who gets to fix it. That said, it does seem as though Samsung has moved on and is more focused on selling newer phones than taking care of their existing customer base. That's a bad business decision for any company, especially in an industry where product cycles are so short, customer memories are so long and most marketing is by word of mouth and internet forums.

Can I ask why? I have a captivate, flashed froyo on it and i'm loving it. Is it just Samsung that you don't like or theres something wrong with your phone?

Because they made a promise (online and in writing) to provide the Froyo update. My dislike also comes from having had 2 Samsung HDTVs that, while having great pictures, developed problems that were poorly handled by Samsung service. And while you may be happy with your modded phone, we shouldn't HAVE to flash a non-OEM ROM just to enjoy things like a working GPS or enhancements that other users in other countries are able to enjoy.

Maybe you don't like Samsung, but I love them. Awesome screen, great performance, good battery, and well I don't use GPS so honestly I don't care (I would use Network GPS before real GPS anyway).
I will most likely buy the 4.5" Infuse 4G, unless they make a 4.5" windows phone 7 (which I doubt, WP7 has horrible phones).

I completely agree. Manufacturers can provide the hardware drivers and Android has them built-in to the OS. That way, EVERYONE (as long as the hardware is compatible) gets the latest version of Android on release day. You know, like Microsoft Windows?

They can put the bloatware on all they want and every release of Android can be nice and clean (AOSP). Like how HP and Sony laptops have bloatware to begin with, but you can install a clean version of Windows on top of that.

Could work but here is where you will run into trouble. Once you load an AOSP rom onto the phone AT&T or carrier of choice will not have to support it. Could you imagine getting bounced between Samsung and Google to get support. Dont get me wrong, I would love to see this myself but I just dont see it happening unless A. Google offers support for every device running android, Not to likely, B. Carriers agree to support non branded software, even less likely.

Ya not going to happen sorry. Each company would have to have the source code to make the phones compatible then the service providers would have to have that info. Then it would all have to be sent back to google. So it is essentially adding another later of delays

Eventually, perhaps, cell service providers could become more like ISP's today. You pay more for the internet access and less for all the useless desktop icons and name branded chat rooms LOL.
It would take a shift in the industry, and it's not a shift the carriers would benefit from, IMO, so don't hold your breath.

I completely agree with that hopefully that is the future but it seems so unlikely. Most people honestly don't care that all that extra junk is added

Umm if iphones are potentially going to more than verizon and Att, then isn't apple still going to release version X.X for everyone as they have been doing? Why would Google have it any other way?
They (Google) absolutely does need to get the bull by the horns on this.. my 69 cents.

Most likely not as the verizon version will have diff hardware, they will most likely have a version for cdma and a version for gsm models. Not to mention Google has more hardware configs to worry about. The iphone except for the diff between cdma and gsm are all the same.

I still think Apple is going to have updates for the masses at one time - and they do it as promised..
Yes Google has more devices, but just like apple, the new software is available for previous versions, just that ur specific device may not be able to support it.

If someone has answered this I apologize but...
NOO the iphones are completely locked down as almost all of their products are (I bought a mac pro for school and will never waste my money again). Apple is the only people who can provide updates. Like every apple product only their hardware will work. Exactly the opposite of both pcs and androids where tons of hardware will work with the os

I agree Google has a lot bigger challenge due to so many hardware configs. Apple has control of all the hardware in their phones where as Google doesn't.

I would love to see Google go the Apple route and manufacture their own phone and tablet hardware. Control the entire process.
Doesn't mean they have to take Android away from manufacturers, just provide us with a phone(s) that's TOTALLY theirs.

They need to make those phones available on more carriers.

If you don't know the history, you are deemed to repeat it. Unfortunately, Google learnt nothing from the past desasters of mobile OS update, a.k.a. Windows Mobile. Android today is in the exact same mess as WM in the past with the exception of more frequent OS updates than MS ever did. If Google can't forsee this type of release model aren't going to cut it, Android will follow WM to the grave.
Phone manufacturers are primary hardware makers. You can't trust them to produce quality softwares. That's why there are separate software companies out there.
Even Microsoft now knows it has to control the OS upgrade all by itself, bypass Phone makers altogether, in WP7.

Nexus One is a complete failure from business stand point of view. Nexus S isn't going too well either.

just a thought,
even though samsung manufactures the nexus s, i think even if google manufactured it they would still be using 3rd party components. ie they arent going to make the screen for it, they arent going to make the wireless chip.
they will have to get there parts from somewhere else, so why would they make it in the first place. im sure the way they have it now they have a huge say-so in what goes into the nexus.
so for them its a win-win situation.

So you're taking a step down from the G2X to the original Galaxy S? Interesting choice. I won both phones and the G2X kills that phone!

When I "move on", I will be not be getting another LG or any phone by a manufacturer which doesn't provide timely updates, has locked bootloaders (which LG is reverting to), isn't open source with all the drivers, isn't well supported by independent ROM and Kernel developers, abandons new operating system versions such as ICS for its recent products such as what has occurred with the G2X, isn't fully capable of using the modem radio for all the bands which all the carriers use in North America and Europe. There's not many manufacturers and phones which comply with those requirements. Saving a few dollars by not buying the most recent phone which meets those requirements is wasting money and will result in frustration and anger. Also a phone which meets those requirements will maintain its resale value much better than phones which don't like the G2X. Think about it then buy whatever you want with open eyes.

Yes, instead of inventing something, just buy patents and milk anyone else who uses them and don't use them to make anything with either. There's so much of that going on that the U.S. patent office is looking into getting patent law changed to prevent that.

isn't the samsung galaxy s still on 2.1 up gradable to 2.2 only through kies or what ever it is. I don't see it ever having a chance to get to where the G2X is at... just wondering.

Wrong, gs1 international is officially on 2.3.7, if im not mistaken, maybe 2.3.5. That is of course if hes referring to the i9000. The only "sgs1" still on 2.2 is the samsung vibrant which is OF COURSE a t mobile device.....And in all truth the vibrant which is officially stuck on 2.2 has had ICS long before the g2x dreamed it up.....
Samsung>LG...Nexus> all. I love my gsm unlocked gnexus its the only phone ive owned out of 8 androids that makes me feel I dont need to buy another device for a long time.

Honestly? If I hadn't sold my Vibrant fair and square, and still owe on the G2X (value plan), I would go back.
The friend who bought my Vibrant last fall had me upgrade him to ICS last month. It runs circles around the G2X on ICS. Using that phone again was like a breath of fresh air, I felt horrible having to give it back.

Completely agree! Just got my GN today and flashed AOKP on it asap. You and your team really did a good job on AOKP. It's a wayyyy different experience on the GN than it was on the G2x.

Good to know kwes I wonder if he was talking about the T-Mobile version or not. But I seen the phone and used it, not a bad device at all. If it is upgraded like that then I'd do it probably.
