Would setcpu work in this case just to lower clock speed of the phone? I'd like to lower it when the screen is off.

yea, if you're rooted, setcpu works without any problems. I have my at 1000 mhz min & max but you can set it however you like

It works, but you have to re run it every boot up, because it gets confused (you'll see an error when you run it after a reboot)
Gotta wait for a real update to it to support the stock kernel correctly.

Mine doesn't wake up when in conservative...

What governor are you using? Per directions of app, I try conservative but the phone never wakes up when using a sleep/conservative profile. Same thing happens with the superpower app with or without OnDemand force.

I have the same problem, I've tried a few different setups/governor settings and I still get the same issue. I have to pull the battery to get the phone to turn back on. Also I think the phone actually shuts off, according to an app called System Panel after I rooted and set up setcpu the phone shutoff shortly after I went to bed for the night.
same problem. I set min 100 max 400 for screen off profile, never wakes up.
On the epic, 100mhz is too low for the phone to wake up so 200 is the min
Snce the ns uses a humingbird, that might be the problem too
Try conservative on 200min 1000max and see if it'll wake up

OS Monitor puts the cpu at 100,000khz - 1,000,000khz and shows it changing so yes stock will do it too. However, what they want to do is make sure that, at certain times, the cpu can't reach its full speed and that stock will not do
there is a new version of set cpu 2.10
did anyone try it?
on 2.04 it was still acting crazy
I was having the same issues with the phone never waking up -even with the most updated version of setCPU- and having to pull the battery to get it back on so I uninstalled. However, I flashed the Team Whiskey ROM with the 1.3Ghz kernel and it has been rock solid since. I've overclocked the processor to 1.3Ghz while awake and using on demand governor with 200mhz min/400mhz max when sleeping. No problems so far.
SetCPU 2.10 works properly on Nexus S
just confirmed, it doesn't show weird numbers anymore

SetCPU help
Hey I just got set CPU and I'm not going to lie I don't understand hhow to use. I messed around without a bit but it would freeze after a while and the screen wouldn't turn on. I don't care about overclocking it all I really want to do is save battery power. Can someone share there setcpu profile Either the info or just the file.

Okay, can someone give me the low-down on how to use SetCPU to it's potential. I'm no noob, but I need someone to point me in the right direction.
I am very interested in a how to as well!

Hello!
My nexus s i getting very warm sometimes, im on kang milestone (stock kernel) is this normal?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
yes, we all get hot and battery drops faster when this happens.
i think its the cpu governor and clockspeed.
if you put alot of apps on its prossess then it wil work faster, faster = frition. friction=hot. hot= battery drain at a faster rate. dead batt= xda question theads more threads= cramped order. cramped order= more cliick and seeing more ads. all us seeing more ads= more money for xda. xda=thrives off newbies
welcome. we are xda.
But is that normal? Can you recommend any rom that doesn't do that?

It's likely to heat up your phone when playing 3D games, using GPS an the like. Depends on what you are doing with the phone. Also, if you use OC it might get hotter than usual. If you think it's heating beyond any limits, try going back to stock for a couple of days, then if it does the same thing, consider hardware issues.
Is the screen getting warm even with minimal use? I had similar issues with cm7 once when I forgot to do my wipes.
Same with mine mate, few minutes on 3g with full brightness and u can start frying eggs on display screen.
I've found out that it's not happening when my brightness is adjusted at about 50%.
Just wondering how many of u, have set up their phones in auto-brightness mode, cuz i don't see to many post on this forum, regarding overheating issue with nexus s ...

I keep mine in auto-brightness, haven't had this problem.
That's strange, I'm running AOSP+ and Eugene's kernel, not overlocked or anything.
I found with some of these ROM using auto brightness just made it dim and go bright crazy. Either way. I found as bad as it sounds a fresh install the best thing. Titanium backup, sms restore, and then wipe everything clean. Solved all the hassles
Mine has gotten warm with heavy use since I got the phone.
If your running voodoo and have your gamma sliders boosted to hell and back, this also will make the phone run *quite* warm.
So Im using teg overclock to undervolt my phone, everythings fine(seriously seems like 35% more battery life) except 1 thing. The phone freezes and restarts ONLY when im on the web while not running anything else in the backround. Absolutely nothing else will freeze the phone, only that-
My question is, is there any way to know what clock its running at while on the web? Ive tried randomly adjusting and I cant seem to find which of the 5 clocks is causing the problem.
What are your current values?
FYI... something's always running in the background
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I had the exact same problem as you when I first started undervolting. I used dsexton's values from the undervolting thread and my phone would be fine, then it would freeze whenever I used the web browser. So I increased all the voltages by a small amount (I did 20 mV, but your mileage may vary) and that solved the problem. All phones have different tolerances for undervolting.
Try using the values i modified and posted on dsextons thread, they work amazingly.

I downloaded the new sultan kernel and everything was running really smoothly. I was playing a game and I noticed my phone getting really warm, I figured that's normal for gaming. Then all of a sudden my phone started making a buzzing noise and got really really hot! I immediately pulled battery booted into recovery and switched kernels back to my regular kernel. Phone cooled down and is running perfectly Thank God! My question is what would cause that? Why the high pitch buzzing noise? Basically what the heck was happening to my phone? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks so much.

Hi,
You might want to pm the maker of the kernel, and find out what kind of thermald they are using and if it buzzes when hot.
Thank you so much I will ask.

when you find the problem, please post it here! is really rare problem
Well, the problem was tried to replicate, but could not be replicated by me or others.. I'm just praying it's not some precursor to hardware failure! So far everything is running fine and cool. I did however change back to original kernel as a precaution. Still have no clue what happened, or was happening. Strangest noise I've ever heard,!! If anything fails I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping it was a fluke.

I read somewhere here in q&a about smth similiar. That guy said he heard a buzzing noize while playing a game, but with what I can remember no one could give an explaination. I don't think the kernel could make hardware damage, though. Search in this forum you may find that thread. He also mentioned having no problems after that episode, if I recall well. Best wishes

Since the Kernel is responsible for thermal monitoring and controlling the frequency scaling, of course it can damage the hardware. I don't know if there are any thermal safety features like in full-blown X86 CPUs, but even then, you can still damage the chip if it is pushed too hard. Not to mention, surrounding components could also become overheated, either immediately or over time leading to damage.
Yes I thought that. Something happened and I know it was kernel related. The phone never got so hot before, EVER! Then that strange buzzing high pitch noise happened. I'm still wondering if anyone knows what that sound was? Was it an alarm of sorts? Was I in melt down? Is this device equipped with an alarm for emergency? I wish someone could answer my question. I have no idea why the high pitch noise?

I don't think that is an alarm, the cellphone are progamated to turn off if it gets to hot and turn on again when it gets cold again....
And I think that it has thermal protection like a full pc processor, my old milestone have it....

My kernel's thermald settings are as follows: the first thermald speed limiter is triggered when your CPU hits 70 degrees Celscius. At 70 degrees Celscius your CPU's max frequency is limited to 972MHz. The second level of thermald is triggered when your CPU reaches 72 degrees Celscius. At 72 degrees Celscius, your CPU's max frequency is limited to 648MHz. The third and final level of thermald is triggered when you reach 76 degrees Celscius. At 76 degrees Celscius your CPU's max frequency is limited to 384MHz. Somewhere beyond 76 degrees Celscius the phone will just shut off. There is also no kind of thermal alarm designed to alert the user of high temperatures.

No, I'm sure he wasn't using your kernel, because I have seen that post maybe a year ago. So I guess it's not just the kernel that caused it
Very strange. After I switched the kernel back to my usual kernel, I've been playing that very same game over and over with no over heating and no strange noise. I suppose it could be a coincidence ,...it just was very strange.. I'm really glad it's not happening again. Maybe just a fluke thing? I tired to google it but found nothing similar....

Try my kernel again. Today I released r5 which is very different from the release of my kernel you used, r3 (r5 is based off of a different source and it has many other changes as well). Also, you can always lower your CPU's frequency or use a different CPU governor if you're experiencing high temperatures.
Thanks I'll give it a try when I wake up.

I know this problem was probably addressed somewhere in these forums but I just can't seem to find the answer.
I rooted my P3113 a while ago and found out that it will not wake from standby (the sleep of death I think it's called). At first it wasn't a big issue since I was using it around the house but now I'm using it at work and the constant turning it off and back on has become a real pain in the ass.
Is there some sort of work-around or solution other than reverting back to stock or is there another ROM I can flash that will resolve this issue?
BTW, This site is great. I've used it many times to flash various phones and to find answers. Ya'll keep up the good work. I know you've been a lifesaver to many.

No, my clock speeds are at maximum. Started when I flashed a custom rom and rooted the tablet. I'm going to try going back to stock and see what happens.

here is ur prob u use ur cpu at max value so ur tab heats up and closes to prevent hardware bricking to solve it just return ur tab to normal by returning cpu clock to normal which is interactive from 300 to 1008mhz i had same prob but i figured it out
if helped plz press thanks button plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
