[Q] soft bricked s4g now stuck in voodoo - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

First off, Thanks to everyone for the posts and for future patience.
I know there has been a lot of discussion on this subject, but I seem to have elevated it to a new level of loopy. Bear with me, please; I'll make whatever changes needed. I have researched/read a lot tried many of the recommended procedures and frankly, I think it has all become mud stew in my head. My wife is none too happy, and if you guys could help me save my genitals/marriage, I'd be much appreciative.
The facts: 1 T-Mobile SGS4G t959v, 1 Mac os X 10.6.8, 1 Heimdall 1.3.1 and 1 ticked-off wife.
So, following the xda forum, I successfully rooted the device. Then I downloaded ROM manager and installed CwM (now I realize the error of my ways), downloaded and flashed Bionix. Phone looped "3e" recovery.
After much research, found heimdall on XDA, and was able to get the recovery image changed to CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v3.0.2.8x. Now, I'm looping that recovery. Tried the bali 3.3 kernel, flashed just fine. found sgs4g official gb2.3.6....Rom, flashed just fine. Still, I remain at the red voodoo screen.
Obviously, I can access the sd card through my mac, and have tried various update.zip procedures, and various ROMs.
So, I've been reading for several days now, poring over these and other forums, and if I understand it correctly, bali3.3_heimdall.tar.gz (thank you very much!) is supposed to undo the ROM manager screw up from earlier (and I can only think that I am missing some critical info here), but no, still looking at the voodoo recovery.
I AM kind of new to this, however I have rooted and modded 4- MyTough 3g's and a defy, All running CMx.
Thanks again,
SN

Try disabling voodoo lag fix and see if that helps

Thanks again,
it's done, with no change.

You are aware that Bali3.3 is a Froyo kernel? If the last rom you flashed was GB 2.3.6 then try flashing a GB kernel and make sure your mounts are correct.

missed the bali/froyo. does this imply that I might flash a froyo rom over bali? or do I need to flash a gb kernel for the 2.3.6 rom? Also, I'm using heimdall and I don't know how to use non-.tar files with it; or if you can.

[Q] Verification Prior To Custom ROM

OK, so I should have done it before I flashed the wrong firmware.
That's beside the point. After doing some research, I found someone with a similar situation that was able to flash their SGS with Heinz 57 and recover their mess up.
I am currently operational with USCC's 2.2.1 Froyo, but with no internal phone storage available.
I plan to flash with Heinz 57.
I did the CWM already. Will likely do it again for verification when I start this.
I will flash my Kernel with:
Touchwiz Froyo
imnuts
PeanutButta Jelly Time (Release 0531 with voodoo, no undervolt)
I will then flash with:
ROM Heinz 57 v1.2 with PBJT
I will likely flash a custom theme after that.
...but that is later and not as important.
Both the Kernel and Custom ROM are .zip files that Odin3 doesn't see, do I change their file extension to a .tar or extract them and re-compress them as a .tar?
Just extract them and use them that way?
Should the Odin3 re-partition box be checked?
Will I need a .pit file as well?
Where should I place the specific files prior to flashing? PDA/Phone/CSC?
I will likely do the flashing later this week when I have more time. My first attempt, I ran out of time and caused myself extra stress.
Thanks for the verification and info! Appreciate the time everyone puts into helping others!
You flash the rom and kernel in custom recovery or cwm. Odin is really only for going all the way back to stock. I haven't seen to many roms made available to be flashed in odin. As for the repartition. When flashing back to stock.I alwayd use that trick. Now the main thing to remember is to uncheck it when flashing the cwm package. Hope this helps.
Tap-a-Talked from my Mesmerize
Running CM7 @1.2ghz w/ Tk-Glitch ML Kernel.
Much love to all the Dev's working to advance the Mesmerize and Fascinate. You guys Rock!
I would suggest reading the second sticky in this forum (newbies guide...) and really spend some time with it before you do anything more. Flashing roms and kernels is not same as recovery.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
never, never, never ever use anything in odin besides pit and pda section! I would suggest you read the stickies as started above, it will help you. then read them again, then read a few more threads in the fascinate section and their stickies, then you'll
have misty oh the answers you seek. before flashing you should be sure of what youre doing,.and if you aren't sure, do not do it. you need to read more because if it breaks nobody can fix it BUT YOU.
not trying to sound preachy but I've been in this boat and thank god people told me I needed more information, it saved me cuz I knew how to fix my error.. good luck

[Q] CWM Recovery question

I have been searching through the forums and have been able to find answers to a few of my questions. However I have been away so long and previous phone MT3G was so much easier to work with than the SGS4G I'm a little lost on some of the jargon.
I managed to get the amazing Bionix frost rom installed and working. Here is my question.
I was able to get CWM on my phone to flash the rom, now when I boot to recovery I am getting the stock recovery screen but if I select reinstall packages I get the CWM Recovery v3.0.2.8. On my MT3G when I booted into recovery the CWM screen was the first thing I saw, I just want to confirm that this is the normal and or correct method to access CWM on my SG4G.
thanks in advance for your responses.
flash dr honks kernel. that will make sure everything is correct with CWM. that should fix any issues you are having. If you have any questions let me know. Its not too bad. I think its easier using ODIN but you can do it either way.
That is the normal process for bionix. It uses an older cwm stock. Search for the Bali 3.3UV kernel. Once you flash that, you will go straight to cwm. plus other stuff. Read his op. Once you undervolt on frost...omg. That battery life is out of control

Click on the Bali + CWM link in my signature. You might as well start learning how to use Odin.
Glad to know you started some reading on your own! FBis251's Odin Bali 3.3 makes flashing Froyo so much easier.
Here's five of the most valuable things I've learned so far:
1) Odin is your friend.
2) Losing your soft brick virginity isn't a bad thing. QQ if it's a hard brick though. Nothing in this forum would really give you a hard brick though.
3) The Bible is quite holy. Don't read it and you'll get some sort of punishment from the community.
4) Reading is fundamental.
5) The developers are awesome!
Not in any specific order. XD
You should try out the GB ROMs here once you get more comfortable flashing on this phone. They're crazy smooth.
Thanks all.
I have been going through the "Bible" each visit to the site. That's where I was able to figure out how to get the Bionix Frost rom working on my phone. And because I missed a few steps like making sure the permissions were correct before flashing I experienced my first soft brick. Which took another 3hrs of reading and playing with Odin to get fixed. But that's what I love about this site. Everyone is so knowledgeable and willing to help. It was't to hard to find out where I messed up and how to fix it. I appreciate all the help, I will start with FB's Bali+CWM upgrade and then I'm hoping to flash Valhalla. The rom looks amazing.

Thanks again FB, just followed your guide and now am enjoying the red CWM. Quick question, with this setup I can now flash any FROYO roms directly from CWM correct? The GB roms however like Valhalla will require the GB bootloaders.

[Q] Multiple Questions - Backup Issues, Installing a New ROM, etc.

Hello everyone. This is my first post, so please be gentle. I've been reading around and I can't seem to find specific answers to my questions so I figured it would be best to make a post. This is my first Android phone and also the first phone I have rooted so I'm trying to be extra careful. I've already received tons of help from other threads in these forums, but as I said I've still got a few questions.
I rooted my SGS4G using SuperOneClick v2.1.1, then proceeded to install CWM ROM Manager as per the instructions I found in many articles online. Once I got that installed I was unable to make backups as it would boot me into the stock recovery menu, which led me here searching for answers. That is when I came across this thread: [RECOVERY]CWM FINAL for the SGS4G After following the instructions I wasn't exactly sure what to do, so I attempted to boot into the "new" recovery menu which ended at an infinite boot logo, which I assumed was a soft brick after reading around a bit.
After thoroughly freaking out about my phone being bricked I looked around a bit more and came across this thread: [GUIDE] Noobs guide to Odin to flash your SGS4G (Windows) Following that thread I was able to install the T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root ROM which restored my soft brick. Once that was installed I installed CWM ROM Manager again thinking the Recovery Menu would be fixed and I could finally make a backup before moving on, but it wasn't. Then I came across this thread: [Odin][Kernel] drhonk's Bali 3.3 for Froyo, Installs CWM!
After installing drhonk's Bali 3.3 for Froyo kernel I was finally able to make a single nandroid backup (and backup my apps using Titanium Backup)! I messed around on the phone for a few days with no issues (other than the Android flickering in the boot logo). Now I am ready to move on to trying out a few ROMS. So, first thing first I said: I need to make another backup. So I entered the Recovery Menu via the CWM ROM Manager and attempted to make another backup, and this is what I get:
E: failed to open /etc..... (I couldn't write fast enough to copy the entire message)
E: unknown volume for path [/sdcard] (10s)
The second of which repeated over and over until it reached 0s and then my phone was rebooted.
TL;DR
- Rooted using SuperOneClick
- Installed ROM Manager and couldn't make a nandroid backup correctly
- Attempted to install CWM FINAL for the SGS4G, which resulted in a soft brick
- Restored using ODIN and installed T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root ROM and drhonk's Bali 3.3 for Froyo kernel
- Cannot make nandroid backups (other than the initial one apparently), Recovery Menu does not seem to be working correctly
- I am not comfortable trying new ROMs until I am able to make backups correctly
Anyway, so here are my questions:
1. What do I need to install to allow me to make nandroid backups correctly? Or is there another app besides CWM ROM Manager that will allow me to do this?
2. I would like to try a few other ROMs, but I when I reach the so-called "Do the mounting stuff" step I am unable to continue as my Recovery Menu isn't working correctly. What do I need to install in order to be able to do complete this step? I have a feeling the answer to #1 will solve #2 as well.
3. I would like to try a few of the GB ROMs (such as Valhalla v1.3.2 or Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 Deodexed + Root), but I am not sure exactly where to go from here. Is the GB Ext4 Starter Pack the way I need to go, or would this way be better? Can I do either of these without a working Recovery Menu?
Thanks in advance for all the help!
Your first mistake was rom manager. It does not work for this phone correctly. Odin one of Dr honks kernels to get cwm recovery. They are in the dev section.

im not sure how many times this has been posted (i think i say this once a day....) but rom manager DOES NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
it is fine. if you can wait a day or two, i will make a nice noob guide on getting from stock to a custom rom. i will be sure to link every pertinent thread and be sure to have a little FAQ section. hopefully it will help you.

Thanks, but I figured that out shortly after installing it. What alternative are we supposed to use? Hopefully your noob guide will help.
are you sure you understand? seeing as you mentioned BOTH bali and krylon's cwm, yet you still do not know how to get the custom recovery on the phone. once again, i will write a nice guide for you, so for now, just odin back to stock and give me a day or two. once im out of work, i will take a nap and write this for you.

Apparently I do not understand. I guess I will just wait for your guide. Hopefully it will pick up where the other guides failed (for me anyway).
Edit: After reading around a bit I think I understand where I went wrong. As a noob I was confusing CWM with ROM Manager (after all, they're both made by the same people right? I believe that's what was confusing me ). I have since uninstalled ROM Manager and have booted to the Recovery Menu and successfully made a backup.
I myself have been a member for coming up on one year. And when I originally joined I was modding my Mytouch 3G. Much easier phone to mod and especially with ROM manager. This phone on the other hand requires more attention to detail. It is very important to do your due diligence to research this site for answers before posting. The reason is, all the wonderful and talented folks making all this possible are providing us all these great hacks, cracks, and roms for free. The information is here if you just look for it. Now if you are having trouble understanding the info that is also understandable. I find questions are better received if you show everyone what you have researched and then say what your are confused about.
Enough of the lecture, the end result is that everyone here is really nice and helpful. Here are the 3 links you should save. The Bible lists everything about our phone. Now at this stage in the game unless you really want to get more background on how the phone has evolved from Froyo to GB you won't need to read the Bible. The first thing you will need to do is follow the instructions for Bali 3.3 + CWM. This will provide you with the Red CWM recovery making it possible for you to flash Froyo Roms. Once you have completed this step you can move on to the GB Starter Pack. This guide will prepare your phone with the correct bootloaders it requires to run GB Roms. Once this process has been completed you can flash GB Roms. And if you need a quick list of the roms available just look in the Bible. Hope this helps, just be patient and make sure you understand what you are reading and attempting before doing anything. And if you don't understand a step or a process then come and ask and you'll get better answers and better understanding of what you're actually doing to your phone.

Thanks for the help. I tried to do as much research as I could before posting (as you can see, I've posted two of the three links you suggested in my OP, and I basically keep the Bible open at all times ). It's just the little things that I find confusing, which is why I posted this thread. It's nice to know that from this point I can proceed to the GB Starter Pack and play around with the GB ROMs, but I think I'd like to try a few Froyo ROMs before I take that step Thanks for confirming that!
Sorry for the double post but I have another question.....
I've been reading over FB's GB Ext4 Starter Pack thread and I just wanted to make sure that once you get to the part where you flash your "favorite GB rom" that Valhalla v1.3.2 would be an acceptable ROM to flash there. If not, which ROM should I flash first, then flash Valhalla? Thanks in advance.
Yes, Valhalla would be fine to flash at that point (any version). just as long as you went through each step of the directions first. you'll be fine.

[Q] Flashing ROM

Ok, so here goes a real noob question!
Although I am not a NOOB, but what I have read just seems a little outrageous.
Ok, So i have successfully rooted. I have seen some posts suggesting the use of ROM manager, and other saying NO.
I have read the NOOB guide, and that seems to be a little excessive to install a ROM onto this device.
Do you have to use the Heimdall method, because I do not have C++ installed, nor do I even know how to use it.
I want to get CWM installed, but I cant seem to find a method for just that.
So if I understand correctly, I have to install a Kernel w/CWM, then I can boot into CWM and flash a ROM onto the device?
I looked on the wiki, but some of the links there are broken, and there are missing files as well.
I really hate ask these kind of question, but I feel that I am really stuck here.
if someone could please help.

If you already rooted, which you stated that you are, then download an app called SGS Kernel Flasher. Then download any kernel you like for whatever firmware you are running (2.2 kernels for 2.2.1 and 2.3 kernels for 2.3.x) and flash with the app, Note- I recommended you flash this one if you are on 2.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513287
Once your phone reboots it should have the kernel successfully installed and you should be able to boot into recovery by powering down the phone completely and holding the volume buttons and the power button

[Q] Galaxy S2 Skyrocket - CM9 Nightly from July24th

After much reading through these forums, coming from never having flashed a ROM before, I was able to successfully flash and am thus enjoying CM9. I had been waiting for this to come out for the Skyrocket since I bought the phone last year, so, thanks
My question(s) is in relation to CWM Touch. I would like to update CWM to CWM Touch.
1) Is CWM Touch going to foul up any part of CM9? (that is, prior to CM9 i had CWM installed, but now due to "internetz confusionz" am unsure if the current version of CWM after CM9 flash, is one that came with CM9, or not)
2) Where I've read to basically never go near ROM Manager for flashing CM9 for now, what about using it to update its own CWM to CWM Touch? I see the option to do so but when I click it, it reads along the lines of "You must first install CWM before installing Touch"....which i thought i...or at least CM9 did..see question 1.
3) Alternate method to #2, I found " download.clockworkmod.com / recoveries / recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.3-skyrocket.zip "and have downloaded it. I thought perhaps I could simply flash this through CWM itself (due to another post somewhere saying this was ok, but it referenced a SGS2, not a skyrocket). Will doing it this way force me to reinstall CM9 (as yet, still other, posts on the internetz would have me believe?)
Overall the goal is to end up with CWM Touch and not have to reinstall CM9 as i've spent far too long customizing the crap out of (and enjoying) it.
thanks!
This is the general section. This thread belongs in the Q&A section.
General is for anything and everything so don't sweat it man. And for the using of ROM Manager I think you should be good to flash touch through it, although I have never tried. I flashed mine via Odin. As for the question will it affect your cm9 the answer is no.

lolno. If it was for anything then we wouldnt have a Q&A section and it would just be in general.
Although I marked the post as a question during submission, I have no problem with an Admin moving my post to a proper section if it will yield more responses so that I may average out any and all contradictions as well as receive answers to all questions.
thank you
To answer your question, recovery has NOTHING whatsoever to do with a ROM. They are completely independent. You can flash any recovery and it will not affect your ROM. Some ppl had issues with the new CWM recovery so I would recommend you to stay away. I do not know if it was fixed. I would highly recommend sk8terwiki's (sorry sk8 if I butchered the spelling ) 5.5.0.4 v4.2 recovery in the dev section. Its the one I use and it gets the job done. He has a zip that you can flash in CWM. I have not used TWRP but heard good things about it. To install twrp just get goo manager from market, hit menu->install open recovery script.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
rolled the (weighted) dice based on swisser's response.
I "Installed" CWM via Rom Manager. What this really did was update me from 5.0.0.27 to 5.8.4.3 for the skyrocket (after i chose it from a menu).
*As discussed 30 something pages deep in the CM9 General thread, this **BROKE** the ability to flash anything from *EXTERNAL* SD Cards. Flashing from Internal worked fine, so I rebooted my phone and copied over the 5.8.4.3 CWM Touch i had downloaded from the site in my first post, to my Internal SD Card. Rebooted back to CWM and flashed from internal SD and now i have CWM Touch Working.
I've run out of tools and toys to flash so i haven't tested if CWM Touch will flash from External SD, but according to that thread, it does.
One thing i've noticed *MISSING/REMOVED.../Moved(?)* (basically i couldnt find the ****er) was the ability to Mount USB Storage while in CWM. This was a handy escape route for me previously and i'm sad to see it (seemingly) gone in both TOUCH and NONTOUCH 5.8.4.3
Moved to Q&A. General is not for "anything and everything". General is meant for discussions and or news regarding the device . Questions belong in Q&A. Side note OP did you try looking for you answers in CM9 discussion thread in general as well?
Cheers

^^what prbassplayer said. you really really need to read. if none of these roms are working for you: you either dont have a skyrocket, or you're not reading all of the instructions. check out the dev section and the general section. if you read in both those sections you will find cm9. you could probably read my signature too... but dont go doing that until you do a lot of reading first. =/
