Okay, only had the phone a couple of days but I've spent all afternoon trying to work out how to turn on an alert for incoming SMS without having to listen to an annoying beep everytime I send an SMS.
I'd prefer to keep a customised ringtone yet the various sound profiles accessed from the Today screen dont let me select my own ringtones.
I assume I'm overlooking the obvious but I can't find how to do it.
Can anyone help?

I've set the phone so I have to enter a password everytime it goes into 'sleep' mode but cant now find how to knock this off when I'm in the house - can anyone help?

I'm afraid it's one of those, either have it on or off. After playing a little longer, you'll notice other things as well, eg. sms/missed call notifications are not repeated amongst other things.
The good news is that there are plenty of 3rd party apps that offer better or extensive use of your Polaris like profiles. A couple that spring to mind are PhoneAlarm and spb phone suite. I think PhoneAlarm might offer what you need like 'launching a program depending on location' and such. Both are shareware though.
Try first googling xda-developers to see what others are saying. Maybe I missed a little app that does exactly what you want.

OK, so the GPS issue aside, I've encountered some random other problems with my Captivate. I'm JH2 with the SuperRooter tool installed. Some of these are actual problems, some are just gripes.
1 - Sometimes for no apparent reason the brightness will change. It will drop all the way down to the lowest setting and I have to go in and manually raise it up again.
2 - Google Voice has been problematic, to the point where I'm not using it any longer. Even though I've set my phone to send voicemail to my Google Voice number it only works about half the time. The other half it goes to my AT&T Voicemail. I MISS the voicemail on the iPhone!!!!
3 - Most of the time when I unplug the USB cable the icon still shows in the status bar, and when I click to turn off USB it still stays there, and only a reboot of the phone fixes it.
4 - I hate how the ring starts off soft then increases in volume, it's dumb that we can't change that.
5 - The email interface is less than desirable. Actually uit's not the interface itself, but rather a couple limitations. One, you can't move messages to another folder - so I have messages in my inbox that I want to move to another folder in my gmail account, and I don't see the option anywhere to do this, I ahve to log in to the computer to do this. Two, on my hotmail account, the other folders I've created don't even shows up, so I have no access to those messages at all.
6 - I have other random wierdness from time to time, like tonight internet connectivity over wifi just stopped working, then started working again an hour later for no reason.
7 - The only apps I miss are my GuitarToolkit, the DrumKit app, and the i.TV app which was an all in one tv guide and let me schedule my Tivo recordings...
8 - ...and of course we all know the GPS sucks!
I have about 3 days left to decide if I want to keep this device or just fork over what's left of my sould and buy the iPhone 4 (I've been a 3GS user for about a year and have been generally happy once I got it jailbroken). Most of this stuff individually isn't too bad, but put it all together and throw in the GPS debacle and, well I shouldn't have to justify to myself WHY I want to keep a phone...

You should look into K9 mail. It's an awesome app and let's you have multiple identities ala Thunderbird so that you can send from your other email addresses w/o having to set up separate accounts on your phone. Very slick program, can move between folders, has archive, junk, etc.
I don't know about the others. I took my Captivate and returned it, but passed on buying a 32GB iPhone 4 because I know one of two things:
1) If the GPS and lag are fixed and/or GPS is fixed and we get Froyo I'm back to a Captivate or,
2) There will be another upcoming phone that is more open than Uncle Stevie's vision of what he wants us to do with a phone.
Having been an iPhone 3G and then 3GS user (yep, went back to my 3GS but only for 6 weeks or so) I can say that having remembered what real multitasking is, real choice is and real options with software - I ain't goin' back. YMMV.
I'll be willing to bet that number 1 is due to your finger on the notification bar. If you slide your finger across it, the brightness will change.
2. Bug with Google Voice, not a hardware problem.
4. Ringtone starts quietly so you have a chance to catch it before it gets obnoxious. It only stays quiet for half a second, and if your phone is ringing, half a second isn't going to make or break the call.
I had a similar problem with Google Voice. I just deactivated the service for my phone number then reactivated a few minutes later, haven't had any problems since.
I'm not sure if that'll fix it for you, but you might want to give it a try--just go to your voicemail settings on the Google Voice website.

Maybe, but I would agree that the option to turn it off should be available.
I bet the brightness problem is because you can change the brightness by sliding your finger across the notification bar. It's actually a very nice feature when you get used to it.
If I were you,i would go through the google voice mail set up again. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
Also, my ringtone does not start out quiet and then gradually increase in volume. Is it possible that the ringed you have tried are just recorded that way?

As far as I know the ringtone thing applies to every captivate so either yours is going it and you just don't notice it or you've got a special firmware or something

I also missed my visual voicemail. I've found that YouMail is an effective if not perfect replacement (my only real gripe is it is a separate app not integrated into the phone app).
That's too bad. I literally have none of those problems.
By far my biggest problem has been GPS, like others. However, with JH2, left all at stock settings I actually have good accuracy - even after 3 days - google nav has been right on. I used cardiotrainer and went for a walk and it was again completely on - better than my old Nokia N79, better than 5m accuracy.
Initial lock times were slow a bit over a minute (default has skyhook off). I put skyhook on yesterday, so I am interested to see if my improved accuracy after initial lock continues. What I have found is that all the suggested chances in the GPS fix might help initial locks, but went to crap after a day or so - and never really had the accuracy while moving. JH2 at all stock has lower initial lock speed, but must have a gps fw algorithm change leading to much better navigation / moving accuracy.
Bottom line - I will be shocked if Samsung doesn't have a 100% GPS fix next month (or with Froyo).

I dont think you know what you're talking about in reference to Hotmail. I have a hotmail account and when you go to the browser and login to your hotmail account, all the options are there. Right in the middle of the screen is a "More" button, just click that and a list flies out and scroll down and "Move to" and the list of custom folders is right there. It has full functionality of the desktop site.
If you're trying to use the built-in email app to work with hotmail, dont. It wont work. You have to use hotmail through the web browser. Hotmail has a great mobile website.

Yes, to activate google voice for your phone you have to go to the google voice website and follow the instructions there. You have to enter your phone number and what mobile carrier you are using and then it gives you a string of numbers and characters that you must dial from your mobile phone to tell AT&T to forward your missed calls to a google voice server/phone number.
Do that and it should work fine. I did and have had zero problems from google voicemail.
If you have brightness on automatic it will change screen brightness based on light in room. If you go outside it will turn brightness up. If your in dark room it will turn brightness all the way down. You can test by covering sensor on fron with your finger and see if brightness drops. If you dont like it turn off in settings.

Make sure auto-brightness is turned off...also, like someone else mentioned, the notification bar lets you adjust the brightness by sliding across it horizontally while the gray bar is showing. Neat feature once you get used to it, but it also confused the hell out of me when I accidentally slid it. Best thing I've found is to just flick the notification bar up and down quickly (vs dragging it all the way up or down).

Assuming you've set it up correctly (which it sounds like you have, since it does go to GV voicemail sometimes), the problem does lie on GV's end. They make it wait 25 seconds before GV will actually pick it up, so your carrier voicemail will intercept it if it's set to pick up sooner than 25 seconds. Until GV lets us decide how long it takes for it to pick up, you can sort of fix this with the following workaround:
1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Send.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages (should be your gv #)
3. Dial **61*+1xxxyyyzzzz*11*30# and hit Send. +1xxxyyyzzzz is your GV #, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum
4. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.
Unfortunately this means that it will take >25 seconds for it to send to GVoicemail, but it does reliably work.
As for the GPS, I'm optimistic that the firmware fix that Samsung has leaked will solve that and our lag issues, but I can see how that would be frustrating to some who want it to work now (as well they should). Sorry to hear that you're having gripes with the phone, but hopefully these solutions will alleviate some of your issues.

This is a feature. They built in a brightness slider when you draw the notification tray down a tiny bit and slide your finger from left (dim) to right (brightest)

No offense, but your assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about is way off...
Clearly, I'm aware that you can manage folders using the web interface in Hotmail, otherwise I wouldn't have known how to create the folder initially that isn't showing up in the standard mail application. I thought it was obvious I was walking about the capabilities of the phone, as in the built in email application...
If I have to use the web interface to manage my email then what's the point of even having an email application?
The email application gives me almost the exact same functionality with Hotmail as it does with Gmail, I think you're mistaken that Hotmail won't work in the default email app. The only thing I get with Gmail that I don't with Hotmail is access to view what's in my extra folders, which really doesn't help because I can't do anything with items in those folders like move them around.

I 100% agree with you about moving email. That is one of my biggest gripes too. Also HTC DOES have this integrated into their mail program, and also folder hierarchy. I think it is just poor that Google didn't integrate these right into the stock mail app, and also that Samsung didn't in theirs.
I think not being able to take MMS photos vertically is annoying. I was used to it on the iPhone; I think vertical or "tall" images look better for Facebook mobile uploads, and I can't find a way to take them so they don't end up sideways in the MMS or mobile upload. Any ideas?
Whats reassuring is that almost all of your complaints can be address through a software update.
Its rumored that the GPS fix + Froyo update will be launched simultaneously or very close together.
After what I've read about Lollipop so far I'm getting kind of ambivalent about updating. Here are two of my concerns in regards to notifications:
1) Heads-up notifications. Apparently developers are the ones that are now in control of whether notifications are important enough to completely blot out a piece of the top of the screen, including the ability to access the notification tray, until the notification is handled. So whereas before I could remain completely immersed in whatever app and wait until I decide I'm ready to pull down the shade, now I am forcibly blocked from accessing part of the app and user interface until I first interact with the notification. As far as I can tell users are unable to do anything about this intrusion.
2) Silent mode - it sounds like a lot of users are really upset already about this screw-up. The old silent mode allowed alarms through which was just perfect for the use case of alarms. You go to bed and you want your phone to shut up completely until the alarm that is supposed to wake you up. Now apparently the only real silent mode also silences alarms. "Priority mode", the feature that is used for so-called quiet hours, still lets through all sorts of vibrations from apps that many users cannot sleep through.
Are these accurate descriptions of the current state of affairs in Lollipop? If so I think it'll drive me nuts and I won't be able to switch until I can take control of these flaws. And with Xposed unavailable for the foreseeable future it means having to figure out how else to hammer a broken OS into respecting the functionality that used to "just work". Does this bother anyone enough that they'll just avoid upgrading for now?
I don't think so at all, it takes some getting used to because the system is alot more iphone-Esq in nature but it definitely works well. There is alot of few features that just bring the whole system up to date, feels very very modern now. Like when you plug the phone into the charger it tells you how much time is remaining until the phone is full, for instance my phone says 47 minutes until full right now in the charger. It can predict how much battery life remains based on typical usage. Having notifications on the lock screen so you don't have to go through the lock screen and then the pull down menu to see whats going on is very convenient. As far as silent mode goes, there is plenty of settings that allow alarms and events to still work even though calls and messages are silent, I like how they ditched the stereotypical "vibrate" or "silent" modes and went with "all" priority and "none". There are always going to be people that are very resistant to change and claim that its awful, but I feel this was a much needed update to the android system.
Nonetheless if I'm given only the choice now between either intrusive or useless notifications, it's not very appealing.

I use 'None' at night and it stops everything, as designed, but I've not tried an alarm as I have a clock for that. Turning on 'Priority' alerts, but turning calls/messages/Events off, should only allow alarms through but, again, I've not tried this.
As for notifications, I've been watching videos on YouTube full screen and the notification hasn't popped up unless I drag down to view the bar so doesn't seem to be an issue
Best thing to do? Back up your phone, flash 5.0 and if you don't like it go back to 4.4.4 and restore your backup

Audio management is just a pain in the ass. I got the same need, when I go sleep I don't want ANY sounds from the phone except wake up alarm and calls coming from a whitelist.
Actually this is not possible. If I set interruption mode, it doesn't silence any other sounds (eg: try to put the charger in and you'll hear the sound/vibration), and If I set the completely silent mode it doesn't allow interruptions.
I used to use a third party app named Nights Keeper, it was perfect running on KitKat, but now it is not on Lollipop, as it can't set the phone on totally silent mode except calls from whitelist.
Dunno if it's a bug or a "feature", the fact is that i'm not satisfied with this, and i can't "fix" it with 3rd party apps.

I've noticed some issues with notifications in lollipop aswell.
Most disturbing is that notifications just pop up as icon in the status bar, except the app is heads up supported (like hangouts) than you get the heads up notification of course.
Before you had at least something like a banner. Even if it was only one line, at least you knew from whom your eg. message or email was and the subject or the first words.
It's seriously just the icon now
That devs have to implement things like buttons or a textbox is obvious, but just the text???
Come on google...
In regards to that app - I have read that when pre Lollipop apps try to put the device into Silent mode, instead it goes into Priority mode. Including Tasker. This may explain observations noted upthread.

Ok as some of the members of this forum may know I got off to a shaky start with my Android wear watch (a Sony SW3).
I've now had it about four weeks and have over come the major problems I initially had, so I thought I would start a tread highlighting the things I love and the things I hate so others can assess if a smart watch is for them.
Firstly, what I love:
- Reading messages from Text, Email, Whatsapp and Messenger
It's so simply to just quickly look at my wrist see if I'm interested, if not I delete, if I am, may read further on the watch or if the message is to long, find my phone and continue there.
- Voice control
A really unexpected plus for me. I thought 'OK Google' was a bit of a gimmick at first, but how wrong could I have been. It's fantastic (OK, I feel a bit of a nerd saying OK Google to get it started, but that's a tiny problem). Driving and going to be late, OK google, Send text message to XXXX, then speak your message eg ' Sorry running late will be with you in 30 minutes. The translation is actually pretty accurate and it's done, you don't have to take your eyes off the road!
- It's an accurate watch, not sure where it gets it's time from but I guess it comes from the phone which in turn gets the time from the network which means no more setting, not running fast or slow. Not sure how it works when you change time zone though but I'll find that out soon enough.
- It's waterproof. Don;t forget to turn the touch screen off, but I've now been swimming with it, I regularly shower with it. Not a hint of a problem.
- Control you music system. I use Sonos around my home and I can turn the volume up and down, change track. Ok it's limited but it still an unexpected benefit.
- Control Bluetooth music with Spotify. Really a feature best used in the car. There's an app that will fire up Spotify on your phone which in turn will use the blue tooth audio to connect to your car. No more digging around to find you phone, unlock it, fire up spotify, find your play list etc etc etc.
- Incoming calls. Nice feature as I can decide if I want to take the call without having to find my phone to see who's calling.
What I hate (ok hate is a bit strong, but)
- The UI I think is not properly thought through You have al these options, tilt to wake, tilt to scroll through cards. Clumsy at best and a battery drain at worst (tilt to wake particularly) Even the touch screen to wake is not that cleaver as it can be operated but a lot of things touching the screen not just me, eg a sleeve, particularly one that is damp
- Voice control Ok I know I've said above that voice control is fantastic but it has one major down side, it needs internet connectivity. If it doesn't have it, it just doesn't work! Wish it would use the processing power of my phone to process voice.
- Wifi, ok I accept this is probably a bug, but wifi doesn't currently work properly, for some reason it will drain all the all the battery for no apparent reason and it does it very fast. I've now turned it off and only turn it on on the occasions because it's great to have full functionality
- Screen, the screen is fine, but that's damming it with faint praise. I would really like to see a higher quality screen and a little bit bigger would be nice.
- Incoming calls. When rejecting a call, it would be good to be offered a 'rejection message' that is sent via text giving a reason for the rejection.
When rejecting calls you can slide up instead of left por right swipe ano it will show up predefined messages that it will automaticly send to The caller.

I would prefer some options (icons only, 1x2, list mode, 1x1 mode, text/no text, recent shortcuts at top on/off, etc.)
2. Embedded speaker for taking quick calls without digging for your phone last minute. 1 problem a watch introduces is that your phone starts to be left behind. I now leave my phone on the counter while I buzz around my home. Phone rings, its a mad dash down stairs to find my phone.
3. Some sort of keyboard. I'll take the old school T9 input. Just let me type a few things.

Download wear mini launcher from the playstore. It's a brilliant replacement that let's you customise the watch to how you want it.

Agree with some points according to my experience with my old android wear.
Hope my new one will work better.
My most of my complaints are solved with the Asus ZenWatch2. It is a solid upgrade to the LG G Watch. Once Marshmallow drops, we'll get a new app tray and speaker support (Zenwatch2 and Huawei) for calls.
I tried the alt launchers and it doesnt replace the stock launcher but runs over top of it. So it just adds to the chaos. However after the nostalgia wore off, I dont really use apps thus dont need to go into the app drawer.

Try FlickKey Keyboard for Wear. It adds a keyboard to any app that wants to call it. Right now, that is limited to Wear Messenger, Coffee for Wear, and K-9 for Wear - you need one of those messaging apps to be able to use it. BTE, FlickKey is not a T9 style keyboard - it works better than that.
I have tried various keyboards. What I was referring to was an option, by default, in Android wear to have a keyboard input. I don't use any of those apps, thus having a keyboard right now would be irrelevant.

I certainly agree that users should be able to decide for themselves if they want to use a keyboard or not, and which one they want on their smartwatch. What apps would you like to use a keyboard with? FlickKey can be added to any app with just about 15 lines of code. So message the dev who makes the app you want FlickKey in and let them know they can easily add it for free.
I find Android Wear to be very useful - when it works. Performance on my original 360 hasn't been very consistent either but I'm sure the S400 watches fare much better. Seriously though - every Android OEM needs to switch to AMOLED as soon as possible since it's much more suitable for smartwatch use.
I have installed AW on a Samsung Gear 2 (ported to the watch by @biktor_gj) and it runs really great !
Much much better than the default Tizen where it comes with normally.
Since I am using AW, I'm really hooked on it.
I love to be able to navigate with my watch and/or get notifications (from Google Maps) about any traffic jams or hold ups on my route.
I love to be able to use my voice to respond to whatsapp messages or even use my voice to make a new message without even holding my phone.
Really looking forward to the upcoming version (Marshmellow?), which suppose to have speaker support, because the Gear 2 has a build-in speaker.
So that means I can make calls too again from my watch (which is now only possible in Tizen, but not AW).
Hangouts and Messenger and Email (I know there are email clients that support wear and flickkey). I doubt Hangouts or Messanger will get it support.
I do not know if I have a unique problem or I changed something in my settings but I have spent hours online and on my phone trying to figure this out. If I get a notification and pick up my phone within a short period of time (less than a minute or so), whatever app that notification came from launches and displays the item that sent the notification. For example, if I get a text message or email and pick up my phone with the intention of launching my web browser, the text message or email will pop up on my screen before I can do anything. This is great if I want to read that text or email but often I do not want to do that until later and it irritates the crap out of me to have to close that app and go where I intended. I think I may have changed a setting and cannot find my way back to the setting to turn it off but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am posting this in case anyone else runs into this problem. I finally figured out it was not an S8 setting, it was a Gear watch setting. I turned on Smart Relay in the Gear settings and caused this.
