OG Droid gets blue capacitive buttons, charing LED swap, and sound reactive LED! - Motorola Droid Android Development

I have been tinkering with my PSP 1000 for about a week now, and decided to dive in and changing out that lame, white charging LED on my Droid, to a cool BLUE!
Took me about 15 minutes (was having trouble getting the new LED in place. There is literally no room for an LED, tweezers, and a soldering iron. lol)
I could put in any color LED I want in there. Some are brighter than others (blue is the brightest). I used 0603 SMD LED's, the exact same LED's that I use in my PSP and PS3 modding.
If your attempting this stuff on your own, I suggest NO MORE than a 15watt soldering iron. I still feel this might be a little on the dangerous side for some of these components, but I am very good at what I do, so Im a little more sure of myself than those just venturing into this.

Sound reactive LED in rear speaker
Tools:T5 Torx precision screwdriver
Small precision flat head screwdriver (for opening the case parts)
Materials:
1x 10uF electrolytic capacitor
1x 39ohm SMT resistor
1x 47ohm SMT resistor
1x 0603 SMD LED (any color will work)
~4 inches of 30 gauge wire (Kynar preferred, and maybe not even 4", probably less)
OK, now this was a fun one. I kept thinking to myself, how I would route the wires, how to best set it up, whether to make it direct contact or now, whether or not to use a low-pass filter, and I finally decided on this. It took quite a bit of work, despite the fact that is looks more than simple. My back actually hurts from bending over my workbench for about 7 hours today, almost straight. This is what 8 cans of pop, and 2 Monsters will do to me. -->
LOL
Here are some pics I took along the way!
Here is the diagram, for those of you wanting to do this yourselves.
This one shows where I notched a path for the wires and the LED.
This shows the LED in place, on its side, soldered up, before I hot glued it in place.
This one is from the under side of the speaker housing, showing where I routed the wires.
This is a partial progress shot, so you get an idea how small this components are.
And finally, and completed product! Tucked away nicely. Decided not to glue it in place, as Im not finished yet.
This is a video of my small test to see how well sound reactive LEDs will work with the Droids hardware.
Video link: Sound reactive LED test
This is a video of the final product, before it was put back together. I still want to add a second LED, as I think it doesnt light up bright enough as it is.

That is sweet man! Do you know if there is any way to fix the notification led? My replacement droid came with one that hasn't worked from day one

That is really really freaking cool.

I don't use my Droid anymore but this is still something I might get done to it. Looks really good !

That LED is an RGB LED. I would have to order one, but there is a very slim chance that that is what's wrong with it. If it is, I could probably replace it for you.

My next mod, is to make an LED in the back speaker, sound reactive, like in PSP modding. Maybe add some LEDs somewhere else, and put in a switch to turn them on and off.

If someone has an old Droid 1 that they would like to donate to the project, that would be awesome. It can have a bad ESN, doesn't matter.

I decided to take on the capacitive buttons, partially due to a member here asking about having it done on his Droid. I think it came out better than I had expected!

I can write a guide, but it only applies to the Droid 1. Im not sure how other phones are made, or put together. In this type of thing, each phone is different (by model).

The Samsung 4G Naked: Side by Side in the Nude with the Vibrant

Good Evening,
After taking the 4G apart several times I decided I would take pictures to highlight the few differences. Some noticeable differences:
1) antenna placement on the board, matching contact placement different on the back housing underside
2) the connector for the headset is different and the ribbon is labeled T959V (model # for the 4G)
3) less memory which can be seen thru the software
4) the GPS still sucks and does not work on this one
5) maybe I received a defective unit but there is an overheating issue. the 4G uses 200ma more than the vibrant but maybe the phone or the charger is defective as it keeps overheating and with time charging seems to be more of an issue/concern. software confirms this with error message.
Enjoy the pics.

Thanks and I hope this helps satisfy some curiosity. In my opinion, from owning both of them, not worth the upgrade at all. The 4G is going back to T-Mo.

Yes - confirmed - camera has the same plug connector. I swapped various parts back & forth to test things out (actually using them, took pictures, etc.) and the only things that are not compatible are the headset plug connector; I guess that is why it is the only part inside that has T959V labeled on the ribbon itself, and the back housing - the antenna contacts receptor(?) on the underside, since one of them was moved to the top of the board, which is also labeled T959V instead of i9000 as it is on the Vibrant.

The modem is one of the black chips soldered onto the board. So no I don't think it would be that easy even if you have those robot precise soldering skills. I will upload a picture that shows the chips and identifies them on the Vibrant (same layout as the 4G but obviously the modem is different on the 4G. Then you have to consider that the extra 20% juice this phone consumes (1000ma on the 4G vs 800ma on the Vibrant) is to power the new modem. So even if you did have the soldering skills, then you might have a power problem.

Yes, it is a possibility. The phone keeps overheating as well when charging, it gets extremely hot. I think this may be a defective unit I received.
i got my 4g and so far no problems with battery or GPS... gps was the first thing i tried and it worked great. im guess some of these crappy phones are slipping through Quality Assurance on the assembly line...

You are totally right. You would think after the GPS mess & outrage with the Vibrant that they would be more careful this second time around. Apparently they did not listen or learn. It really makes me consider going for the LG Optimus 2X instead of the S2. I really want to get the S2 but these problems keep worrying me. It is like loving someone but they keep beating you up, do you get out of the relationship or keep hoping it gets better? Hmmm....
my gps works alright, sometimes it's a little wonky but nothing horribly concerning. i haven't gotten the overheating issue once although my battery is kind of sad.. i've rooted it and used setcpu to underclock when idle but still just short battery life.
i have noticed, however, that i have a green tint to my screen. noticed when taking photos that skin tones are off, then i email it to myself and check on other phones/computers and sure enough, it's just my 4g screen that seems to be tinted green a little. anyone else notice this or is it just me?

Hmm that sucks, if you are going to keep it, that is a problem I would not want to have, try get it exchanged. Thanks for letting us know about your problem.
Maybe someone has a solution and can offer some advice for the green tint?
This thread alone just convinced me that there is no way I would upgrade from the vibrant to this. What a let down. I considered getting it at first but thankfully realized they are just the same phone.
Moved to general as not android development
My friend and I both got 4Gs' at the same time. My gps fixed within 2 meters in my home, his running side by side took a long time to aquire. We rebooted his, gps took a long time to aquire but after 2 min, it did, but was within 9 meters of same location.

I wanna know...
I see the GPS is an issues. But I wanna know from yall that have the SGS 4G, is this the phone to buy right now on Tmobile or go a different route?
Im still rockin a Touch Pro 2. Contract about to end soon. I was lookin at the myTouch4G but the SGS 4G has better looking radios. Where the myTouch only has the 14.4 stuff.
What's yalls thought on it?
I have used both and they are both good phones. The decision for me was made by the screen on the GS4G, the Super AMOLED just looks so much better to me. The MT4G is a more solid feeling phone and it is plenty fast (processing wise). The GS4G is noticeably faster on the 4G network and I also get faster speeds while on WiFi, not sure why but I will take it! Coming from the TouchPro 2 you will be happy with either, I just prefer the GS4G.

[DIY] Custom Colored Capacative Buttons..(Pics Fixed)

Disclaimer : I am not responsible for any damage you do to your phone during this modification, and I am not held liable if your warranty becomes VOID.
If you would like your capacitive buttons to be a different color, other than white, or even if they are too bright and you want to tone them down a little, then this is the mod for you...It does require taking the phone apart, so if you are afraid of doing this and voiding your warranty, than stop now and wait till your warranty is over...I did this for my EVO 3D and made a write-up for it the other day, and today I got around to doing my wifes 4G, as you can see in the pics, it took me 12 minutes...
You will need your EVO 4G, some transparent vinyl, or any other material you can think to use, some ppl have used tape and different kinds of films, a T6 torx tool, a small phillips screw driver, and a razor blade or scissors to cut the material...

Once you turn off your phone and remove the battery cover, there are 6 screws that you need to remove with the T6 torx tool...There is a sticker on the middle left screw that tells the techs whether or not it has already been opened...
Once those have been removed, you need to take off the back of the phone, you can use a safe plastic tool to do it, or I just used my finger nails, some ppl have even said they used the battery cover...Then there is a small phillips screw in the top right corner that needs to be removed...
Once you have that done, you need to pull up the PCB board from the right to access the LEDs that you need to cover, be careful when doing this as you have ribbons that are still attached and can be broken...In the first pic you can see the LEDs and in the second pic you can see the vinyl that I placed over them...
Once you've done all that, put it back together and enjoy...

You can not use RGB LEDs because the phone itself is not capable of using them...You can however change the LEDs individually to get the effect that you posted...The reason I haven't done that yet is because if something happens to the phone, Sprint wont take it that way, so it' easier to just remove some film layed over the LEDs...But they should be size 0603...
Awesome! I've already done the edge scraping (to add a red 'racing stripe' around the outside of my battery cover), so I'm not sure which color to do this. My phone is green-themed (PlurStarAlpha, though if a MattedBlues port comes out I'm definitely using that), with a visibly red case. I suppose I could strip the case of internals, sand, and paint the red racing stripe green...but then the camera ring would be red still, as would the plastic underneath the kickstand.
I don't know what to do!

Nabi 2 Teardown

So I have been watching some videos today and I have a tab I am willing to sacrifice to the cause...I am trying to add gps and wireless charge...Maybe try and switch the charger port for a micro usb but I will see when I get there. I have been watching videos on doing both mods with iphone 4s today and that stupid kinabis area would be great to hide some boards. Only problem is I got all the screws out and the corners pop loose but the centers stay attached...Has anyone seen this before on a differnt tab? Is it glue/tape or clips? Any ideas?
were you able to Record a you tubevideo on how far you got ?
i havent been inside of mine yet.
i would be interest if i could get a bigger sd card in it
Gonna try to get it with a blow dryer tomorrow and see where that leads. Ill record it all incase it works.

My thoughts: Man, there is a lot of wasted space in there. They could've made the bezel 1/4 the size and had a much, MUCH more portable tablet.
Shows they were designing for kids 100%, with no real interest in adult use. (Well, that was already obvious from the awful grid on the back panel and the lip around it even if you remove the grid and home-build a flat back panel; I am 100% certain that contrived Nabi blocks aside, the real reason they made the back like that is to stop adults buying the tablet and not giving it to a kid.)
Right on! So any thought of rear facing camera, flash, NFC, ambient light sensor? Different case entirely?
Wireless charging sounds cool, so does GPS.
Edit: btw what wireless charging system are you planning to implement? Powermat, touchstone?
Struck by my Anthrax Infected Viper4G Ev_O_nE using Forum Runner
The camera and flash sound awesome but its very doubtful we will ever see a source for the nabi so installing rear would mean having to remove the front(I think) and to be honest I use my tab for skype more than photography. I've had NFC on my phone for quite a while and ive never used it, im not even sure of a useful application for it. The idea of a different case is awesome but im thinking more to just redesign a back plate to get rid of the lip from that kinabi plate crap (I kinda like the curvy kids feel to it.)
I will more than likely go with the touchstone just cause of the price point but I'm looking at the power mat cause I'd like to be able to drop my One X on charge all night too.
Do you think it's possible to solder 2 wires from the micro usb to the charging port and that would activate usb charge?

Would it be able to handle the amperage or does anyone know or think it would even affect it at all? Your essentially doubling the amperage while keeping the voltage the same. Voltage is one thing but Amps is another. Many components can or are sensitive to too much amperage. Maybe I am getting to technical about it as the components that regulate the power in the nabi can handle and will regulate the amperage and voltage it requires anyhow. Do you or someone want to sacrifice a nabi 2 and try it?
I want to see where I would need to try and attach GPS to the nabi 2 to get it working. Would love to look inside the nabi XD as it would answer a lot of questions.

I want to see where I would need to try and attach GPS to the nabi 2 to get it working. Would love to look inside the nabi XD as it would answer a lot of questions.

That is why I was trying to find out what kind of screen it takes as you can buy a nabi2 with broken screen for under 40bucks on ebay. if i can get a replacement screen for few buck i will try to experiment. Or do you know if there is other battery out there that we can use that has bigger capacity.

Honestly, I have not tried looking yet. I want to take apart my nabi but I have been really busy lately. I also bought a universal mount for it but need to figure out where and how I am going to mount it to my car.

If you could get a replacement screen for a few bucks people wouldn't be selling broken tabs for $40 on eBay.
The screen is probably the second most expensive component behind the motherboard with CPU.

[MOD/SOLDERING] Boot Kindle Fire HD 7" Into Fastboot with out Fastboot USB Cable

As I search for an alternate point to actually solder to this is the best I've got so far.
In order to completed this you must have a moderate amount of soldering experience and a damn steady hand.
EASY: First solder to the easy spot which is 3-4volts when unit is off.
Use a strand of copper from a speaker wire since the gauge is thin enough you should be able to attach it rather easily

}
HARD: Next what you want to do is hold the Kindle on an angle where you can access the power button and touch the other end of the copper wire to the following point. If the unit doesn't automatically turn on you may have to manually power it on carefully while touching the point.
HARDER: Solder to the point and run a switch in line for a fastboot/unbrick mod. Maybe later...
Great tut, however it seems there is much more work than to just make a fastboot cable.

I didn't want to drop 9 bucks on eBay and after like 5 USB cable disassemblies I just said screw it and whooped out the iPod Pryer and multimeter

I have another demo unit. I'll check it out for you. But I'm pretty sure the RX TX pads shown in the picture below are what your looking for.. As for VCC you can use the 3-4v wire shown in picture 1 and ground obviously the black wire where the battery connects a few wires over from the red one.
Also I'm going to do a tutorial on how to flip a demo unit into a full blown unit/cm10 soon since that was what I was doing/did to this unit. I'll be using your files and another users files do you have any objections?

Its not fun until you break it open to see how it works and make it better hardware wise. I can easily doing an inductive charging mod to this. Actually going to very soon since I'm selling my Sero 7 and keeping this smaller tablet.

There used to be a person here who had the signature "if it ain't broke, fix it"
Seems fitting for the two mods

I'm a hardcore hardware modder. I love tearing stuff apart. If you look in my sig the inductive charger thats in the Sero 7 after it sells on ebay its coming out and going in the Kindle HD
why not just make a option in the roms?
It's easy enough to do from terminal, this is more of the oh crap I bricked it instance, I do agree, this mod is harsh, butttttt if you were wanting to crack it open anyway.....

This is mainly for modifying the demo units sold on eBay for 1/2 the cost of normal KFires. I got a demo unit off ebay for 80 shipped and flipped it for $150 fully modded with android. I then picked up another demo unit for 70 shipped and am using it for my wife. Never spent a dime on a fastboot cable which is needed for a demo flip.

err, why wouldn't you just unplug the battery?
30 awg kynar wirerap wire and copious application of kapton tape barriers is the way to bridge traces, imo.
I wonder if there's a place on the Vcc rail on the output side to pull power from. it'd be better because the current way is skipping the power filtering/protection circuits for the battery and dumping straight pack potential into sensitive chip leads.
also, i'm guessing TX/RX is the uart?
Has this been tested on a bricked model? or was it only used on demo units?
Would like to know, since I bricked my KFHD7 and am currently waiting on a Fastboot cable that wont be here till, the 27th.
Just want to make sure before I crack mine open, will report if it hasn't already been reported to work on a bricked unit

If you have the means to do this mod and have a spare cable. I'd go with modding a cable and recommend heat-shrink over tape(improper taping is poor strain relief). He did this mod because you can't exchange a demo unit and problems making a cable.

Tough Screen on the Note 3, very tough!

I've had a little accident regarding my Note 3. I was taking part in my hobby (Horse Riding) during a trot my phone decided to fall of my pocket. (when not having lessons I have a Bluetooth ear piece for taking phone calls). Long story short, my phone got trodden on by 200lbs, twice, 200lbs per hoof.
What I want to know is, is there anyone else that has had a lot of pressure placed on their phones?

Try that again on tarmac and let us know but this time show the pic of your phone instead.
Haha yeah I was gonna say.
Still even with the loose substrate I think it held up quite well to the increased pressure compared to other phones due to its size.
How do u know it's exactly 200 lb per hoof. What if one hoof was smaller then the other.
How do u know which hoof..
Serious questions man lol.

I didn't think people we're replying... I don't that was just a wild guess (the horse (Small pony) + tack + me is 800lbs...I don't have a camera to get a picture...but the little tiny crack is still there in the bottom left of the screen.
not sure how much kilos but my daugther always steps on it and thinks that its like something to step on. and she always throws it here and there. i has gone through a lot of throwing. it even landed face first on solid concrete from lets say 20". (not to imagine it was thrown really hard). but not a single dent/crack whatsoever. really happy with it for now. its handling the brutal day to day life. lol
btw, mine has a back case. and the lower/upper side of the phone is completely unprotected. and it has a screen protector that wasn't cheap and that the guy that sold it to me when i bought the phone said it is genuine stuff. lol
have fun killing your phone mate

It depends on how it fell and if it was face down or face up. Pretty sure it was fave down in the dirt. The dirt probably soften the hit and the back of the phone is straight plastic

If one hoof was smaller it would still be the same 200lb exerted over a smaller surface area ha it wouldn't make it lighter.

This thread really doesn't matter anymore....the phone survived and this happened back in November...I don't actually remember it happening now too well (My memory is terrible) and I don't care too much as it's a small crack and it doesn't bother me

not to mention the fact that the horse/pony (to me it looks more like a big pony) is never rollin' on 4 hoofs at the same time...there are at the most 3 hoofs on da ground when he's ....hmmmm.. rollin' ....it's called dynamic weight distribution and, depending on da hoof, it could've exerted as much as 400lb on da device...and if da pony was fitted wit dem steel rims (horsyshoes) no way that piece could've escaped.....
...mabe' neva happened....
