Data dead after kernel flash - Verizon Droid Charge

I was running the 1204 Imnuts rom for the past day and today decided to flash the IMO 4.0 kernel with lagfix enabled. I also flashed FUGU tweaks prior to flashing kernel.
Everything went fine but a minute after booting my phone when the lagfix was enabled it dropped data. I restarted again and it did the same thing. I get about a minute of 4G and then it disconnects.
A little worried, I disable lagfix, let it reboot to convert back to RFS and then I Odin back to EE4 with the pit file for good measure.
Same problem. 4G for a minute or two at best and then no data. I put the phone on wifi and let it update to EP4D and the same scenario exists.
I took the phone to Verizon and they are sending me a new one(or refurbed I assume). Thank goodness for the extended warranty.
Anyone have an idea of what happened? 4G working for a minute or 2 and then data dropping all together?
I don't post much here but have been a ROM flasher since getting my Fascinate over a year ago so it's not a noob incident.

This has happened to me several times. Replacing the sim card fixed the issue for now.

In my area (Western NY), there is a 4G data outage. Started yesterday morning.

http://stopthecap.com/2011/12/07/verizon-wireless-lte-outage-impacts-service-on-east-coast/
Verizon Wireless has confirmed a major LTE outage is impacting their data customers up and down the east coast as of late last night.
4G service works only intermittently this morning for impacted customers. Many Verizon Wireless 4G phones are also not stepping down to the older 3G network properly during the outage, which means no data service at all, unless you are near a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The largest service area affected is New York City, but the outage is also impacting 4G customers in western New York, Pennsylvania, and northern Virginia.
Verizon has no estimated time when the problem will be repaired.

You know... these are the time you, as an Android user, have to turn to the community to get help first.
Help from the Verizon Store Representatives? Don't make me laugh. They aren't known for being the sharpest knives the drawer, the sharpest tools in the shed. You get the idea.
Many times we know things hours before the store reps do or know things that the store reps don't even know at all. Definitely a situation in which the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
I know that the people with the high foreheads are busy trying to fix issue, but please... for God sake, put a damn notice somewhere where the whole damn company can see it so that you don't send people scrambling around looking for a fix for their devices when it's your own damn network that's broken again.

I drive between western PA and NYC everyday then home and had a similar problem when I first got Verizon and this charge. I was on the stock tomorrow and couldn't hold 4G to save my life. I called Verizon customer support, and they did something with the network and the phone, then told me to pull the sim out, blow everything out with canned air, reseat the sim card, and call back the next time I was in the area of problems if it didn't work. I don't know what they did or happened, but both my wife (she has a matching charge) and I haven't had any problems since

My phone number is from NY although i live in las Vegas now. Maybe they are doing testing by phone numbers in given areas. Can't believe i am getting another phone out of the situation.
I asked the woman helping me for a new sim and she was adamant on replacing the device.
If it has to do with my number being from the northeast then the new phone will not work either.

During lunch today, I started having data problems in Montgomery, AL. It's been up and back down again in that time.

NY area is back online.

North East Ohio is still offline.
They say something happened to the switches that authenticate the SIM cards. So... why are there not regional switches or even a switch in each state? Redundancy, redundancy, redundancy.

And we're back down in NY. LOVELY.

Here in north west Ohio I have nothing at all. Me, all my buddies, and my family have no 4g or 3g. This is a major outage. Very widespread.

I think this has something to do with the razrs claiming it has a broken sim. I strongly believe its all tied together in some way. I hope Verizon makes a statement and soon.

FYI: PRL 13xxx means you're on the new Hybrid Network

Originally Posted by Gav508 Tonight I called tech support from Verizon and was surprised to get in touch with a very knowledgeable rep. The Hybrid push is a known issue, but ONLY for certain customers. These customers are in certain areas and are either former Alltel customers or customers that are accessing former Alltels equipment. I to have the 15008 PRL, however my location, New Jersey, I am not affected by the Alltel issue, and even though she said she would send the update to my phone, she stated that it can cause other issues. Since she seemed very knowledgeable about this information, I decided to take her advise and stay clear of this update.
For any of you guys using Alltel towers or equipment, all the info you have read is correct and this pushed update should serve you phone well. Just first verify you are in that Alltel local.
Myself I suffer from loss of internet sometimes moving from one place to another. (home to work). She asked if I frequently get the cannot connect for internet message. I do. She also asked if I get the 1X instead of 3G frequently. I do. She stated that this is a know issue with the Thunderbolt and it can be rectified very easy by doing a full factory reset from settings. Since I was having more issues with the Internet then the phone calls I am going to try this fix. I hate reloading and setting everything back up but I am going to try it anyway.
For anyone thinking of this, this operation puts your phone back to factory release condition. You will lose all contacts and data info. Make sure your contacts, calendar and misc info is backed up first. If you have a Google Account everything is and will reappear after you re sign back in.
Update from the OP: I said 13xxx, but this number could be different for your area. I honestly have no way of telling how many different PRL's there are or which number would say that would definitely tell you that you're on the Hybrid network(If there is one in your area.) I just know my results and that my PRL number changed.
On a quest to figure out why my phone had 3-4 bars of network signal, while my wife's phone had 0-1 bars even when they were next to each, I found this out in the process. If you're on PRL 15008, your phone is connected to the old Verizon Nationwide network. While if your phone shows PRL 13xxx, then your phone is connected to the New Hybrid network. I was on 13004, while she was on 15008. If your PRL shows 15008, I highly recommend you call Verizon and have them upgrade you to the Hybrid network, as this GREATLY increased my wife's signal and fixed her voice calls reception. (Not sure if this does anything for data. She always had good 3G and we're not in a 4G area.) They will push the update to your phone and have you leave it on for a few hours. Afterwards, I pulled the sim card and battery out for 30 seconds, replaced them and let the phone boot up. After 10-20 minutes, the radio will locate the nearest tower and my wife's phone auto updated its PRL number from 15008 to 13006. She now has a constant 3-4 bar signal and her time without a signal is significantly lower. (Same as mine.) Also, if you're rooted, make sure you know the correct stock firmware/radio version as they will probably ask you for this info.
P.S. I would only do this if you're having voice(not data) signal problems like my wife phone was. My wife phone shows 13006 and mine shows 13004, so PRL's can be different numbers for your area. So again, this may help some people and this may do nothing for others. If you already have a great signal, I would leave well enough alone.

yeah, I have 14001 too. Are you on a legacy Alltel plan?
I am on 1508 and in a 4G area. I don't know about the hybrid network or what not but I know that coming from Tmobile, I have great voice reception.
Just today I started to get 4G at my apartment. The coverage map always showed me in a strong 4G area but I was only getting 3g until today.
That is my first time hearing about 14xxx. But it could be the correct PRL for your area. Wouldn't hurt to call and find out. Also, have the regular Verizon plan. Not sure what the legacy Alltel plan is, as I never had Alltel service. I'm located in Central Florida btw.

Have you downloaded the 4g fixes for the VirusRom?! I hear they will bring your speeds right back up to par! I am not in a 4g area therefor i can not confirm but a lot of other users have said after they downloaded the fix everything was back to normal!
Just thought i might see if that helps. Good luck!
I called Verizon and even got tier 2 tech support...they said they have NO upgrade for PRI......he told me to pull the batter..then the SIM card......and see if it helps....I still have 15008 PRI. The tech informed me that it depends what part of the city you are in. Maybe your wife got the wrong tower when you activated the phone and she got the 13000 when you pulled the card. Do not think there is an upgrade for this.
That is why everyone has a different PRI

4g LTE outage Cause!

So get this folks... I had read here that a credit was being issued for the outage, so I decided to see what dollar amount I would be given. When I spoke to the rep, he offered me 1.99$ (2 days of data loss). So I said, ok, fair enough. I then asked what in the world happened, how was the entire US affected? The rep then proceeds to tell me that due to the massive tornado activity in the south, the 4g was effectively shut down. He says, nature can be that way sometimes... But, I was not to worry because the issue caused by the storm has been fixed. Now, basically I feel that just like anything, things will break, but to blame network screw-ups of this scale on god, Come On! I hope this will not be their official line, because I may not be the most tech savy tbolt user, but I know darn well this issue was NOT caused by friggin tornadoes! I guess they suppose the masses are that stupid. I guess mother nature also auto rebooted my phone right before the outage as well???? WOW!

Because the tornados couldn't have taken out cell towers?
Honestly, who gives a **** what caused the outage? Does it really make that big a difference to you? They acknowledged the problem, fixed it within 24 hrs and are crediting people's accounts (which they really don't even have to do). Kudos to Verizon, I say.

They couldn't have taken out cell towers in CO, where I live. It's possible that a large network outage in the south might have caused a cascading failure for the rest of the country but that suggests a surprising fragility to the LTE network.
I'm not particularly upset about it but it is a bit curious that severe weather in the South would take down a network nation wide.
Um if tornadoes took out the towers, but only 4g was lost, and in some cases 3g, then these sound like some very finnicky tornadoes. If I was a tornado I wouldn't go for the 3g and 4g but leave the tower and its power source and 2g parts unharmed. Or were there actual places where all cell reception was lost? I only ever heard verizon say 4g was down, and that thunderbolt people might have issues thanks to how their phone hands off between 3g and 4g which was why people had to do t a fix to get from 1x back to 3g while 4g was down.
I'm not sure if this is true or if it is related to the tornadoes, but I read somewhere that their central/primary "router" went down.
I happened to be talking to a Verizon network tech on the day of the outage about a seperate issue and he said that they were having a problem with the eHRPD/LTE authentication system. So basically the phones were being denied access to the new networks but could still get on the old network. Who knows whether or not that's true but it sounds more plausable than bad weather.

True. Usually there's redundancies for that kind of thing though. Especially for a large company providing a service nationally.
I was in Alabama (Huntsville) during the tornadoes, and I can say that I was having the 3G issue the day before the storms came through. The only issue that the tornadoes caused was the inability to make and phone calls or send any texts (busy network error). I was able to receive calls and texts though.
Sidenote: My thoughts are sent out to anyone affected down there, there was a lot of damage done.
The flaw in the OP's information is most likely the source. He got the info from an account rep. While a tornado might be able to mess with things locally, no way one, or even a bunch of them could cause a nationwide problem. Just give up trying to figure out what the problem was, that's Verizon's job. Just enjoy the phone.

eHRPD has been disabled since the outage. Perhaps the devices are still down.
Perhaps you fail to see that our network is not just towers. It is tied to land based systems and a location of major traffic can shut a system down. All it takes is one hit in the right place and the whole thing fails. Main hub for fedex had a failure and it shut down their whole network worldwide.

Been working fine here in Seattle since Thursday morning. Rock Solid 4G - no jumps or anything.
1. Buy phone, data changes from 4G to 3G to nothing constantly.
2. Leaked radio comes out, data changes a little better.
3. Immediately prior to outage, constant 4G all day.
4. Outage occurs, 1x for days.
5. Outage fixed, solid 4G in Philadelphia.
6. Leave Philadelphia, back in Jersey, no 4G, Goes from 3G to nothing. Under settings/wireless & networks/mobile network says connection failed. Uncheck, then check, 3G back, then connection fails again later. WTF.

just got gx2 having some issues

I just got the phone today me and fiance both got same phone we were told our area had 3g coverage i contacted tmobile support and the tech stated it is not availabe he actually suggested we seek another carrier anyone have any suggestions to getting better quality signal and data...
Since you bought it from Tmob you should ask and get the unlock codes for free and also should be opt out of the early contract termination fee as well because it was not your fault about the coverage area. Don't let them push you around. Stick to your guns that the tmob rep said you would have 3G and yet you do not.
Check with ATT and see if they have better coverage in your area. The G2X can work on ATT networks as well but you would have to do some research on the settings and etc.
Thats my two cents if your gonna leave Tmob and keep the phones.
As for getting better reception or data signal theres pretty much nothing you can do to make it better if the towers aren't there.

Agree with all that, maybe you can get the phone as a Standard rate plan, which they don't offer with smart phones. You can then use it wifi all over the place. And when the merger hits, you might get better reception if they can share antenna....though some say the G2x will not work on any 3G ATT signals.
thanks for the responses
Yea ive been searching around seeing if there was a fix or noticable difference in rooted pre gb releases for better sig/data strength and such i even caled tmo when i got home and spoke with tech rep and he suggested that i just return devices and go to a diff network I felt that was a horrible way to represent the company. Didnt even try or make a feeble attempt to troubleshoot just blew it off to ah well you dont get 3g in your area so to bad basically.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the G2X only works on the 1700mhz 3G band. ATT does not use this band so he would be stuck on 2g, which is exactly the problem he's having with tmobs now.
well i should have gone further in to detail
The issue is in the store i was told that i would be in a 3g area once i got home i was only staring at the letter G on the highway i had 2G but at home now even outside I am at G and tech on the phone said i was in 2g area then proceeded to tell me i should look in to another company problem is ive tried verizon which is incredible service horrible support and sprint which had great customer service but horrid service I can travel to mount vernon and data roam.

Hmmm you might be right and i have to retract my statement cuz now ever since the phone was released it showed that it was quad band and had both bands for tmob and ATT for 2g/3g/4g bands and now LG says its not.
Even Tmobs site showed it had that capability. I'm reading into it now. Thanks for the refresh course.
No one suggested WiFi Calling? I use it at work and its awesome. Really cuts down on battery usage too. Plus WiFi Calling is now FREE on Tmobile so why WOULDN'T you want to use it at home or at work?
Beats paying AT&T for a $100 WiFi Extender and having it come out of your bank of minutes.
Plus WiFi Calling works over standard WiFi, so even at McDonalds it will work.
Of course this is under the assumption that there IS some coverage around your home. If there was NO service then I would probably just look elsewhere. If you can at least make calls in your neighborhood and calls, text, and surf the web at home (using WiFi Calling and WiFi) then that isn't so bad. Text messages work on any network grade. The only issue you'd have with a slower network is data. But if there is decent service "around" your house, then WiFi calling works wonders to make sure you are online around your home.
It would actually be kinda cool to reply on a WiFi router for service because at 10pm I could just pull the plug and cells go off. No kids texting at 2am.

No one really knows but Tmobile is releasing lots of "Quad-band" phones in the event the AT&T merger goes through. They've even stated they ONCE the merger goes through, they will unlock the other frequencies.
So while there is no absolute answer whether our phones are truely quad-band until we crack it open and actually test, it would be odd that it passed FCC, had it listed on the website, and touted as one of the biggest features... only to NOT have no such hardware.
Makes more sense that Tmobile just "locked it up" for now.

There really isn't much the csr over the phone can do. If you don't have service the person on the phone can't magically teleport a tower into your hood.
They offered you the chance to return the phone and get your money back. How else would you like them to proceed when they can't provide you with service?
Thanks all for the responses
Yea thats what ive been doing just got it set up to wifi in the house honestly out and about not that big an issue as i already have everything i need on the phone at that point unless its a game using data based connectivity which i can deal the phone in itself is just to nice for me to let go of and as for the last post honestly youve waited your breathe and I dont appreciate the rudeness really there is no magic tmo fairy to pop out of my ass and stick a new tower in my back yard gosh there goes that idea. but yea def love the phone testing out root lol i couldnt wait day 1 rooted and working on a good rom/kernel combo in the near future you can look forward to me buildling from aosp soon as this has been something i have been nearing for quite a while now just couldnt find a decent enough phone to dev on so be on the look out for the Triumph Rom coming soon to your neck of the woods.
I was rude? I thought I was just being logical and asked what you would have done if you were the csr.
I'm glad you are at least trying the phone out via wifi, 99% of the people here would have ditched it.
well if i mistook you i apologize
But i def would not recommend someone leave my business for another without prior checking thoroughly to see what other options there may be this guy spent 5 minutes on the phone with me he was in tech support and did no do any literally anything to troubleshoot why i was listed in a 2g area but only getting 1g was my big issue but honestly ill take this over sprint any day i cannot leave the house 5 minutes in any direction without data roaming so just pushed over dark and sin with faux kernel going to set it up and test drive I will be working up some gb roms once official release is out which from the reads i have found is only sometime soon. heres to hoping.

[Q] Please Help - Slow data speed on S4G-TMO

I am in Houston, Zip code 77057
I need some help regarding data speed on my Sensation. I only get about 85 kbps download at my home. I have all 4 Bars and 4G logo all the time. But somehow I never get above 85 kbps. I have try all possible fix I could found on XDA (Thanks XDA) , like removing Plastic case I am using toggling ciphering, which seems to help lot of people here , but no go for me .
I have been in contact with TMO from last 3 days regarding this. i used my land line to call TMO so we can troubleshoot the issue on Sensation. Very first time I called TMO , She have me remove the battery and SIM card form the phone. At the same time she setup something in her system and asked me to put SIM, battery back and turn on the phone. When I turn on the phone again, I got amazing 3Mbps speed (at Home). I thought speed problem got resolved. But next morning it went back to 85 kbps.
I called 2nd time yesterday, this time I was on the phone for like 45 min, first she checked my data plan(I have unlimited data), the we checked on SIM card (I am using New SIM came with the Phone) but nothing worked. The she wrote a ticket for technician to go and check tower. She promised to call me next day. I also told her that previous Rep did something in TMO system which got me 3 Mbps speed. she told me that Previous rep must have fixed my Phone to a single Tower and when i left the area Phone lost the connection and picked up the nearest tower to my home. (useless solution)
Today I did not see any speed improvement, When TMO rep called I told her no Improvement and I am still on same Slow 85kbps (with 4 bars and 4G). she will have technician go one more time tomorrow and have technician call me directly.
This is so frustrating, I am tired of this thing. I like the sensation but lousy data speed is spoiling the fun. I am seriously considering leaving TMO.
Any thoughts ??

Both GSM/WCDMA. I did checked before i called TMO
Thanks
Have you tried selecting wcdma only? I am not sure if that will work or not but worth a shot. It kinda sounds like the network has your account/phone throttled as that is right around the speeds I get when I am. Keep calling tmobile, I know its a pain in the a$$ but it sounds like a problem on thier side. When I had a problem last week (no 4g service at all in my house) they tried to tell me I was not in a 4g area. I had to call back to get a different rep because the previous one just wasn't listening to what I was saying. They ended up having the completely wrong address that had them looking at towers 5 hrs away from me.

HI
I did tried WCDMA only mode, No Signal both (Phone and data)at all when i use WCDMA. so thats not gonna work. well i am waiting for TMO to call me back today.
Thanks
I have the same problem here in Stockton Ca. The rep at tmo never got back to me after 1 week so i called back. Rep oppened another ticket and promised to get back to me within a couple of days... No call after 1 week. When I called the third time complaining they said they didn't call me back because the slow data was a software issue and had nothing to do with T-Mobile, so I should wait for an update from HTC. Then after mentioning I was thinking of switching to Verizon they switched me over to customer loyalty, who immediately offered to cancel my account for me. Where is this great customer service I hear about?

AT&T - Just activated last night - Issues

Hello all,
I love being able to go on a forum again... I have been rocking an iPhone for the past year. Anyway, I just put my sim card yesterday. Unplugged this morning at 6:30AM., already down to 41%... I uninstalled most of everything. This is an E6653 Unlocked from Handtec.
Do I have to do anything special to make this work better with ATT. It's working, but the signal has not gone past 4G. I know for a fact that there is great LTE right from where Iam typing this. But blah. Do I need to call ATT and tell them I'm no longer using an iPhone?
The battery I'm guessing it's just settling. It was warm this morning, maybe some enrant thing from booting up yesterday. After a recycle today, it seems fine.
'4G' icon means 'LTE' though (on international models). Check this one out -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62587394&postcount=83
But your speed could still be throttled. ATT used to have 'different' LTE plans for iphones (they still do - I think). So people had to call ATT to put them on android LTE plan. Then ATT used to ask them to provide 'ATT branded' android phone's IMEI to activate the plan. It was a PITA & happened only when people were switching from iphone to android & vice versa (android to android has always been fine on ATT)
I just called ATT., and redid the APN's for ATT. Just to be safe. Still says 4G., it's my understanding that it should say H+ or something along those lines. But what you sent says it means mid ground. With the 4G, I'm getting 11Mbps Down, 5Mbps Up...

Did you reboot after ATT has changed your plan? 4G & LTE icons are mutually exclusive on Sony phones (country dependent) & they both represent 'LTE' in the US. So yes, yours should say H+ according to the speed, which can also vary wildly even on LTE. Check out the screenshot - all three were done on LTE. Interestingly, the second one was the slowest one when I added 'hipri' to 'APN type'. You don't have that, do you?

Those three speedtests were run at the same location using the same tower?!

I've got the E6653 on AT&T and it only shows 4G as well. As schecter7 stated, 4G is LTE on Sony international firmware. You are correct about battery as well, it does settle down after several cycles.
So., phone finally died. At 2:44PM when I unplugged it at 6:30AM. That is shameful. Hopefully it was just the first run... I did nothing intensive, no videos, no anything. Ran waze for 15-20 minutes during morning commute. It died half way through my walk this afternoon using RunKeeper.

Yep, while I was sitting at the same spot & watching movies! Talk about the nation's most reliable LTE network lol But I live downtown & my ATT line is consistently faster than my other Tmob line. So I can't complain.
Also someone mentioned adding 'hipri' [=high priority] to 'APN Type' speeds up things. But it did exactly the opposite thing (second ~2mpbs reading) lol So that case was an outlier. But I do see 10-50 mbps range daily.

That is wild, thanks for the clarification. Also, based on your advice, I am going to remove hipri from my APN as well. I entered mine manually after I could not get LTE at all even though it was present. I found out AT&T downgraded my account to 3G only after using a Xiaomi device for a few months. I had to call and give them an LTE IMEI to get it switched back. Of course, I used an IMEI from a LTE AT&T device I have in my closet as the Z5 one was showing up as an old Sony P900 on the website under my account.

4G is LTE on a US network. If you had a US, Canada or Mexico firmware, then it would show up as LTE. Once one of these stock firmwares get released from Sony, then you can flash it and it'll show LTE.
As for your battery, let it recycle a couple of times and if it's still a problem, you can always reset the phone.

Going back to iPhone? See your Z5 on Ebay. Out of curiosity I have to ask why?

I liked it.. and gave it a whopping two days.... I just can't get used to Android again. Plus, while I was all giddy about getting it, and finally getting everything perfect. My entire house is all iPhones, iPads and MacBooks. I have turned into the ultimate iSheep, if this amazing phone could not pull me back. Not sure what would.
It's on eBay and CG locally. Should sell, if not, the RMA is already set with Handtec will just ship back on Monday.

Definitely understand. I don't knock Apple because I've never tried it. Nice having you around, for a few days anyway Enjoy the weekend.
Why not go to Settings -> About Phone -> Status to check what kind of signal you are getting? It should correctly tell you whether you are on LTE regardless what you see on notification bar.

Factory resetting doesn't do anything, of the firmware is somehow corrupted you would be installing the same thing over and over. Yes it will reset caches but that can be done much faster and simpler.
I know first hand about the firmware problems, I'm on my 4th Z5 now previous ones had horrible battery life. This one is alright but not fantastic. Especially compare to my old Z3.
I would like to add..I am using Att and have the lte apn set-up.
It actually says LTE

Joosty, any issues using it on ATT so far? How is battery life for you?
It's going quite well. Reception is great. Nothing out of the normal.
I managed 2 hours screen time with 50% battery left.
I'd say the battery should last you a day with heavy use.

I just received my Xperia Z5 E6653 from Clove UK.
I got my nano sim from AT&T and they set it up to use the Z5 IMEI and it would only show 4G at the top of the screen.
We fiddled around with it in the store and were unable to get LTE working so we set the IMEI back to my Galaxy S5. Still no 4G LTE.
I am using the standard AT&T LTE APN.
Please help

This is the most frequently asked question by the US folks. I can't blame them though. Remember Xperia Play 4G ? LMAO
Since OP, the ultimate isheep (just kidding ), left this thread behind, let me go retarded for a second
Read the post above by augie7107 before you dare to ask this 4G question
