[Q]Fastboot mode - no boot or recovery img - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend gave me his Nexus S after he messed up something while trying to flash ROMs. When turning on, device goes straight to the bootloader and on the top it says red-coloured: "Fastboot mode - no boot or recovery img".
I can get into CMR but when I go to 'install zip from sdcard' there is nothing so my guess is that my friend has made a full wipe of everything (including SD Card, ROM, etc.) and now he has nothing to flash and stuck in the bootloader/recovery.
My PC won't let me push files to the phone as there is no ROM installed so the phone isn't recognized as a mass storage. Is there any other solution?

You can mount storage in CWM, go to 'Mounts and storage'. Your PC should pick up as a mass storage device and you'll be free to transfer files.

Wow, I can't believe that this was going to be such an easy one!
Thanks for your help man, really appreciate it!

This sort of happened to me before. try downloading and installing the file attached. It should do the trick. N.B- You need to have root access.
ok thanks. I have root access (i think, fairly new to all this, apologies).
How do I run the file??
Thanks.

Boot your phone (make sure the file is on your phone), then simply select the file and follow the onscreen instructions. After that, select it's icon in the menu and choose to allow it to automatically operate when USB is connected. Then just allow root access and you're good to go. Try your rom flashing again and it should be successful.
hey
thanks for your help, but I currently have no ROM / OS installed on the phone, so can only boot into recovery / fastboot etc.
not into android os.

Since you can boot into recovery and access your phone from your computer, then just flash the stock windows mobile rom to your phone. I think that would work and it does make sense. If it does work then you can continue doing what you want after you have done it.
Do you mean flash it via fastboot? I'm sturuggling to get files across from my pc... sorry to be a pain...
I can access the SD card to drag files in recovery. but cant isntall from the sd on my phone.
tried flashing files direct to phone with fastboot but coundt. probably just got it wrong. gahhh.

I need to purchase one first, hopefully will get chance this week.
Any links to best guide to make a goldcard btw?
Thanks.

[Q] Nexus S is freezing Google Screen

Hi,
I´m Brazilian (sorry for English mistakes). I really need some help. My message will be long, because i´ve read a lot, and tryed a lot of things. Please, if you can, help me. . "Yes, i saw the video!"
When I turn on my Nexus S, It is freezing in GOOGLE SCREEN.
I have read a lot in the web about this problem and try a lot of things, but i cant fix it.
My first test is go to another ROM, I´v tried CyanogenMod and MIUI, but i cant change my ROM.
I´m using a rooted phone "LOCK STATE - UNLOCK", with ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.4.
Nexus S works in the FASTBOOT MODE, and goes OK to RECOVERY MODE.
If I try to acces the SDCARD (Mount, Format, wipe), i received a fail message.
In a google forum, someboy teach that we have to WARM the cell, and if i warm it (in a coffe machine), we can access the sdcard.
When it warmed, i try to FORMAT the SDCARD in a lot of ways (by Cellphone, By windows - Fast Format, using a Panassonic software). The SDCARD works, show the OK format Messages, and when i turn it off, and turn it on, all files are there (They went back, after format).
When I try to install MIUI, Miui doesn´t work, but the cell go to "normal ROM". when it was warm, it works (with a lot of fail messages), when it was warm, it wasnt work.
Thanks for help
so you can connect your phone to your computer en put things on the sd card , but when you try to install a rom, it won't work.. correct? so can you boot up your phone ? because i'm a little confused with the hot and stuff.. try wipe cash and wipe data/factory reset before installing a rom , maybe that will do the trick..

I can connect my phone to my computer (usb).
I can use ADB, and FASTBOOT DOS commands.
I can put things in my SDCARD (when it´s warm), i can delete my old files in my SDCARD. But when i reboot the phone, my new files (roms, normal files) are not there, and my old files that i deleted are there. So, it´s complete insane. when i format the sdcard, the old files come back after i´ve deleted. :-(
I would update your recovery to the new 5.0.1.0 to start. You can do that with fastboot. The older 3.x recoveries had issues with SD cards mounting.
You can also download the factory image files from the development section and use fastboot to return to stock. Try that and let us know what happens
"The hot and stuff".
When the cell phone is HOT (warm), i can access the sdcard.
When it´s in the normal temperature (30ºC , 86ºF), the SDCARD doesnt mount, and nothing works.
If i can turn off the sdcard and use just the normal memory, i think i can use the phone.
Nexus One users can fiz this problem taking the edcard off.
We dont have Samsung warranty at Brazil. :-(
I´ll update my recovery. Thanks. I´ll do it at night, because my coffe machine is not here. lol. Do you have another idea? Does anybody have idea what´s going on about that "warm problem"?

When you are in the recovery did you click on "install zip from sdcard" and then browse to the correct .zip OR did you just click on the option that says "install update.zip?

Today i´tried to remove the cd card. i open the nexus s, and i saw that i cant do anything.
the sdcard is not removable, it´s fixed in the motherboard, so, i cried and still have a broke phone. could anyone help me? do you have some idea? i tried to g to samsung at brazil, they said that they cant help, there is no warranty, and i´m by myself.
In your recovery console there's an option that says mounts and storage. Try mounting each of /data, /system, /sdcard, and /cache.
Post any errors you get, exactly as they appear.
Don't be too upset, there's a lot of things we and try before we call it broken. Went through a crisis a lot like yours about a month ago, and trust me when I say that there's a good three days of things we can try
Hey man I here ya on the crisis. But remember you got a Nexus S, these are almost unbrickable. I would recommend finding the ODIN how to here on xda and giving that a shot.

[Q] Copy ROM to USB without OS

Hi I need some help to get my phone working again. This is a bit more difficult because the Nexus S doesn't have a removable SD card slot. The OS on my phone is gone, but I still have clockwork recover working. The problem is that I do not have any zip files on the internal SD card to flash a new ROM. Does anyone know how to get a ROM zip file copied over to the Nexus S for flashing? Phone isn't working now :crying:

Need Help!! Wiped phone in TWRP, but install zip wasn't on phone! No backups!

Hello everyone! I just downloaded and moved an install zip of a ROM to my sd card using root explorer. Problem is I had wiped everything beforehand in recovery without confirming that the zip was on my sd card! I was sure it was on there as I had done this many times before, but I couldn't find it using TWRP.
How can I fix this? I have an sd reader but it doesn't support sdhc
Try looking in data/media folder. Had that happen to me and that's where it was

I swear I looked everywhere, but I'll double check. Is this an issue with TWRP? I never had a problem like this with CWM.
So how do I boot into recovery with the phone off now?

So frustrating! I know that the damn zip is on there somewhere, but I can't see it! I checked data/media and found TWRP, but no zip. You found the zip on the external card in data/media and not the internal storage correct? Any other suggestions that I can try other than getting a compatible sd card reader/adapter?

Where did you put the file?
I found it on the internal storage as thats where I had my file.
did you use the file manager function in advanced to look for it?
and in the future make a folder called 3 and put all flash-able zips in it
i use the 3 becuz recovery has numbers at the top of the list
I always download and move the zip to the root of my sd with root explorer before I flash. Never had any problems until using TWRP. Not saying it's not my fault for not making a backup first, but something screwy is going on with it. I'll be going back to CWM.
If you can't find it... Download the file on your computer... Connect to your phone computer as disk drive... Transfer the file into a recognized folder and then flash it...

yes I used the file manager, but didn't find anything. I think what happened was that the zip was on internal storage and was erased when I wiped. Not sure how it was in internal storage because I'm almost positive I moved it to the root of sd before booting into recovery. I could be wrong though.

I've never used TWRP but from the recovery you should be able to mount your phone/ sd card to your computer and transfer files... might be called mount and storage or something close to that...
I know enough to get me into his predicament!
I used this to root (don't think I used Odin with that), but I do remember messing with it for something else as I do have it installed. So I'm no expert as you can tell!

ok go to the link above download Odin (extract to the folder) and the root66 tar
put them in a folder on your desktop
put your phone in download mode and plug in cable
(Turn off Phone
Hold down Volume Down + Power + Home Button
Press Volume Up when Prompted after the security warning)
Open up ODIN
Put the stock.vzw_root66.tar in the PDA section
Select box: Auto Reboot
it will take awhile "do not unplug" wait for it to say pass it will reboot on its own

[Q] Nexus S can't see sdcard

Hi All,
I've just updated my Nexus S i9023 to the latest stable Cyanogen Mod (10.1.3) and am now having problems seeing the internal sdcard. I've tried flashing 10.2 RC1 as well as mounting it via recovery mode but everything I do fails to get it to mount.
Would any body have suggestions on how to troubleshoot this (best place to look for logs to find errors) or have come across this before and know how to resolve it?

No, It doesn't see it in recovery either. If I go to Mounts and Storage section and do a "Mount /sdcard" it just give a "Error mounting /sdcard!" warning
Same if I try to format /sdcard. I just get
Code:
Formatting /sdcard....
Error mounting /sdcard!
Skipping format...
Done
A couple of other pieces of the puzzle
The phone was encrypted before upgrade (and since reencrypted)
When I go to settings -> storage, I see what looks like the contents of the storage flashing up before disappearing
HI there.
I used to have same problem all day and I found a solution which works for me.
Under flashboot I put older version of recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo. Only with this one it allows me to see actually usb mount storage.
I still can't mount the storage card for flash, but I can see it in my laptop. So I do full format in fat32. (It takes about an hour).
After that everything was fine.
Hope this works for you too.
