[Q] Copy ROM to USB without OS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I need some help to get my phone working again. This is a bit more difficult because the Nexus S doesn't have a removable SD card slot. The OS on my phone is gone, but I still have clockwork recover working. The problem is that I do not have any zip files on the internal SD card to flash a new ROM. Does anyone know how to get a ROM zip file copied over to the Nexus S for flashing? Phone isn't working now :crying:

This sort of happened to me before. try downloading and installing the file attached. It should do the trick. N.B- You need to have root access.
ok thanks. I have root access (i think, fairly new to all this, apologies).
How do I run the file??
Thanks.
sorry to be a pain

Boot your phone (make sure the file is on your phone), then simply select the file and follow the onscreen instructions. After that, select it's icon in the menu and choose to allow it to automatically operate when USB is connected. Then just allow root access and you're good to go. Try your rom flashing again and it should be successful.
hey
thanks for your help, but I currently have no ROM / OS installed on the phone, so can only boot into recovery / fastboot etc.
not into android os.

Since you can boot into recovery and access your phone from your computer, then just flash the stock windows mobile rom to your phone. I think that would work and it does make sense. If it does work then you can continue doing what you want after you have done it.
Do you mean flash it via fastboot? I'm sturuggling to get files across from my pc... sorry to be a pain...
I can access the SD card to drag files in recovery. but cant isntall from the sd on my phone.
tried flashing files direct to phone with fastboot but coundt. probably just got it wrong. gahhh.

Have you tried a different SD Card or a sdhc card? One of them might help.
I haven't tried another card yet no.
I need to purchase one first, hopefully will get chance this week.
Any links to best guide to make a goldcard btw?
Thanks.

After rom flash, does not recognize microsd anymore

I recently flash one of the g2x to bionix 2 and it does not recognize the microsd anymore.
How can I go back to another rom without using sd card? It boots up and loads fine.
Clockworkmod recovery will still recognize it. Did you try booting into recovery?

No recovery won't delete the files on your memory card during a normal wipe of user data.
You can also get into recovery by powering off the phone and then holding the volume-down and power buttons at the same time until it boots into recovery .... assuming you nvflashed the recovery to your phone.
i can use nvflash to get into recovery, but when i try to browse to sd card, nothing.....

Which recovery did you flash? There are 2 versions. One mounts the internal memory and the other mounts the external sdcard. Make sure your files are in the appropriate location for the recovery you flashed.

i did both and they did not work, i ended up with the external.
wat u do mean by files are in appropriate location ? i thought i can put those rom files on the root of the sd card.

Yes you're correct. You can actually have them anywhere you want on the sdcard. What I meant was they need to be on whichever "sdcard" your recovery is mounting, whether its internal or external.

The only other suggestion I can come up with would be to flash the other recovery, the one that mounts your internal memory. Use a file explorer app on your phone to move the rom .zip to your internal memory and then boot into recovery and flash.
Maybe your external sdcard slot is fried? I dunno. If its not recognize by your OS or recovery then it seems like a hardware issue. Just my opinion based on what you've been describing.

Need Help!! Wiped phone in TWRP, but install zip wasn't on phone! No backups!

Hello everyone! I just downloaded and moved an install zip of a ROM to my sd card using root explorer. Problem is I had wiped everything beforehand in recovery without confirming that the zip was on my sd card! I was sure it was on there as I had done this many times before, but I couldn't find it using TWRP.
How can I fix this? I have an sd reader but it doesn't support sdhc

I swear I looked everywhere, but I'll double check. Is this an issue with TWRP? I never had a problem like this with CWM.
So how do I boot into recovery with the phone off now?

Press and hold volume up +home + power
Thanks! Wish me luck
So frustrating! I know that the damn zip is on there somewhere, but I can't see it! I checked data/media and found TWRP, but no zip. You found the zip on the external card in data/media and not the internal storage correct? Any other suggestions that I can try other than getting a compatible sd card reader/adapter?

Where did you put the file?
I found it on the internal storage as thats where I had my file.
did you use the file manager function in advanced to look for it?
and in the future make a folder called 3 and put all flash-able zips in it
i use the 3 becuz recovery has numbers at the top of the list
I always download and move the zip to the root of my sd with root explorer before I flash. Never had any problems until using TWRP. Not saying it's not my fault for not making a backup first, but something screwy is going on with it. I'll be going back to CWM.
If you can't find it... Download the file on your computer... Connect to your phone computer as disk drive... Transfer the file into a recognized folder and then flash it...

yes I used the file manager, but didn't find anything. I think what happened was that the zip was on internal storage and was erased when I wiped. Not sure how it was in internal storage because I'm almost positive I moved it to the root of sd before booting into recovery. I could be wrong though.

I've never used TWRP but from the recovery you should be able to mount your phone/ sd card to your computer and transfer files... might be called mount and storage or something close to that...
I know enough to get me into his predicament!
I used this to root (don't think I used Odin with that), but I do remember messing with it for something else as I do have it installed. So I'm no expert as you can tell!

ok go to the link above download Odin (extract to the folder) and the root66 tar
put them in a folder on your desktop
put your phone in download mode and plug in cable
(Turn off Phone
Hold down Volume Down + Power + Home Button
Press Volume Up when Prompted after the security warning)
Open up ODIN
Put the stock.vzw_root66.tar in the PDA section
Select box: Auto Reboot
it will take awhile "do not unplug" wait for it to say pass it will reboot on its own

I cleaned my tablet tf300, to install a newer and different rom, now i can't get twrp to see my microsd card to install the rom, how can i get the rom file to my internal sd card to proceed, as i can't get adb to work either, i've no idea how to copy the files to internal to get going again.
Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Did you try unmounting the internal, then mounting external?
I have zero luck in getting it to stay on external SD, I've tried to unmount the internal and then mount the ext sd, so I am stuck. I don,t even see USB mode when I hold volume down and power, the only option is recovery Android and wipe data, so I don't seem to be able to get the zipped rom i want to install copied where I can use it.

Thats how the new bootloader works, fastboot protocol is enabled the second you boot to that menu. So make sure you are on the patched 2.4.4.0 recovery.
I've downloaded a patched version of the twrp 2.4.4.0, but i can't access usb function to use fastboot or any other method to get the patched file to my internal storage on the tablet. Any ideas as how to transfer the needed file? Hope it's not bricked beyond repair. Plus my pc fails to install device driver, i am stuck at the starting screen that says "the device is unlocked" and asus logo.

Need help!!! :(

Was doing to do a fresh installation of Omni on my Nexus 5 and i accidently done a factory reset however also wiped the internal storage so the rom is now lost.
As i cannot boot the phone, i can only get into the bootloader and recovery screen, how can i manually upload files to my phones storage?
Hope you guys can help me asap.
Thanks,
Ed

You should mount the sd card using recovery and then use your PC to copy the zips you need back to your sd card and then flash them. Some recoveries will automatically mount the sd card as soon as you connect the phone and the PC with the usb cable. In others you may have to go into the mounts (or Mounts and Storage) menu and select mount USB storage or sd card.

Try to push rom file through adb side load..
I happened to me once..
Try this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575150
Plug her into computer
Make sure drivers are working for adb by mounting storage than running the command "adb devices" assuming you have set up your sdk. if your device shows up. Run this
"adb push ROM.zip*/data/media" in the prompt.
If your device is not recognized.
Update drivers manually using the device manager on your computer. You will need to install the drivers. That's easy. Just look up how to. That should fix it with minimal confusion
