[Q] PowerVR. Does it handle all graphic tasks, or only things requiring shaders/3D? - General Questions and Answers

i've currently got a mediatek processor in my phone and it's 416mhz doesn't have enough juice to push emulators at a playable speed (snes/genesis/nes etc...). also, it's not quite enough to push .avi's (can play them with qqplayer, but too choppy to be watchable)
they've got a new processor out with 650mhz and powerVR Series 5 (SGX) (same processor as in lenovo a60) and am considering upgrading.
my question is will the powerVR graphics chip handle most everything graphic wise (emulators and video players for .avi)? or will they rely on the CPU? or will it be program specific...if program specific, are there emulators and video players that are programmed to make use of it?
hope i'm being clear here... sorry if semantics off a bit...
cheers

I think that the processor speed(650 Mhz) is enough to play SD videos... but not HD imo... SGX gpu is quite good already..
BSPlayer Lite is a video player with Harware Acceleration capabilitites that utilizes your GPU to reduce work in the CPU to save power...

okay...great, i'll keep that player in mind. the screen is i believe only 480x320 on the phone i'm looking at, so no big deal if it can't play HD... just want to make sure it will be able to handle xvid etc... w/o having to convert to 3gp.
and want to make sure it can play emulator games... the 416mhz can run them, but too slow to be really playable. was hoping the powerVR would help with that, but not sure if emulators take advantage of it or not...

ARM announces software for 3D graphics on phones

Does this provide any immediate benefits for us?

I was under the impression that the Kaiser was Xscale rather than ARM, but I could be wrong...?

Our Qualcomm chip is ARM as implemented by Qualcomm. XScale is ARM as implemented by Intel->Marvell.
This doesn't help us it's just a graphics engine spec upgrade for Java and for another GPU, while our GPU is by ATI.

Java??? it's about OpenGL ES, 3D & Acceleration. It's about the API they use & I'm most certain that the MSM7xxx series processors fall into this catagory. This will allow for better programing & Acceleraition & 3D grapics for S/W based on the engine & help porting high-end & graphic intensive games & apps. In therory it should aid in porting popular PC games to mobile devices.
The Khronos Group's OpenGL ES spec is designed specifically for embedded systems such as mobile handsets and video game consoles, and is the API of choice for the PlayStation 3. Members of the Khronos group include graphics companies nVidia and ATI, CPU manufacturers AMD and Intel, Sony Computer Entertainment, Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, and Samsung.

While this will mean nothing for the Kaiser initially, it very well could be the start of something. It could be that this engine will have the ability to use H/W acceleration without being dependent drivers. These programs would run well like CorePlayer, but would not present a solution in & of themselves.
Right now I don't care about the video/graphical performance of my Kaiser - I think its a foregone conclusion that we're not going to see any *REAL* resolution to this problem.
But I say... bring on nVidia's APX 2500!!
lol or you could use the search this thread tool instead of just search

seconded... hell, i'll even take one in the bigass engineering size they had. as long as it has good bluetooth anyhow. i can't imagine holding that up to my ear... lol

Mobile device CPU manufacturer ARM today announced Mali-JSR297 software, which takes full advantage of OpenGL ES 2.0 standard GPU and allows for 3D graphics processing on mobile platforms.
Mali-JSR297 is an addition to ARM's Mali graphics stack, an implementation of the OpenKODE set of APIs which the Khronos Group devised as a way for developers to produce cross-platform games and applications more quickly and easily. With it, calculations in Java will be minimized, allowing more sophisticated 3D graphics, which ARM claims can be similar to high-end consoles and PCs.
Also, MSM7200 is OpenGL ES 1.0, or 1.1, compatible only afaik.
Still, looks like it could be something ... if the pictures says it could support native apps.

[GAME] Trainz simulator for android! Working on adreno200!

n3wgames released a port for android which works very well!
This game is availaible on android market for a very fair price, though originally intended for tablets running honeycomb with tegra chip.
I have bought this game for my tablet and works wonderfully. I have thought of trying this on older hardware to see how this game demanding is.
AND IT WORKS!
I am successfully running this game on typhoon ROM HD2 with chainfire 3D(NVIDIA plugin) There are few problems, but it's nothing hard to fix. Current issue is with S3TC texture compression and rather slow emulation of NVIDIA Tegra part. Looking a way to overcome this.
I'm trying to fine tune graphic settings to:
-get most of detail on my tablet
-reduce quality on HD2 to improve gameplay experience
For example you can tweak some options under
/sdcard/android/data/com.n3vgames.android/trainz/files/userdata/settings
#globalmodule.txt
for example draw-distance can be set higher to increase viewing distance with cost of few FPS, also good/bad-weather-fog can have dramatic impact on game speed. In game options are quite lacking and doesn't have all tweaks needed.
I'm still looking for some settings to add in this file.
Thanks for adreno 200 support
Trainz is adreno200 compatible BUT you must use NVIDIA plugin or you'll get white textures. I'm looking atm for a way to disable S3TC texture compression, it's major performance hogger.

So on a dhd it will work OK then if it works on a hd2

[A700] Running Games @ lower resolutions

Does anyone know of any apps or possible ways we could run games at lower than native resolution on the A700 tabs. Cause I think at 720P, games would run great on this tab. Currently as we all know most THD games run ok but could be a lot better.

[Q] Android mini pc with 3d video output

Hi!
I want to purchase an android mini pc which can support 3D video output over HDMI/VGA
I dont have a standalone 3d player, wish i could buy a single device which will bring android and string media player to my TV.
Got confused with products available online, need good suggestions.

ok ,dear,i understand you ,and do you want duad core or quad core? And whether you have a demand and the RAM and ROM?:cyclops:
i have a few side by side 3d films that play perfectly fine on my cs918 (rk3188). i also use the vlc app to play the videos and my tv combines the 2 side by side videos to make 1 3d video
i got the CS918 with Bluetooth for £45 from Amazon. although it claims to be a 1.8ghz quad core its actually a 1.6ghz quad core although still runs very smoothly. 2gb ram, xmbc installed, wifidisplay installed and comes rooted with 4.2.2 but the is custom roms to take it to 4.4.2 if thats what you want

Does it cause your TV to switch to 3D without you having to do anything? I got an Android TV box to replace my Pi just to have a little more speed but the Android will not cause the TV to switch like the Pi does. I have to manually switch it. I went back to the Pi but would love to get the Android working as it is faster and has other apps and games.

my tv doesnt jump straight to 3d but it pops up with the 3d menu and asks me to pick whether its left & right 3d, top & bottom 3d or 2d to 3d conversion
1 bonus. if your tv supports 2d to 3d conversion then try it on GTA San Andreas. the game doesnt support 3d but my tv does an amazing job of making it look 3d. Mario Kart 64 running on an emulator also looks strangely good being converted to 3d.

Distorted Graphics in Android Emulators

In every android emulator I use, for some reason when I use Direct X, I always have distorted graphics. My opengl is only 2.0 so I 'm usually forced to use Direct X mode. Here is an album of some examples: imgur(dot)com/a/bX1c2
Here's my dxdiag: goo(dot)gl/Y1phQY
Yes, I know that I use custom graphics drivers, but the graphic distortions still happen whether I use the original one or not.

I can't explain you the exact technical reason but your graphic processor (released 2008) simply doesn't meet the requirements of actual emulators. I use Genymotion myself and the undemandig requirements are:
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (2012), Nvidia GeForce 500 Series (2011), ATI Radeon HD 6000 Series (2011);
I know that other emulators even need a more powerfull gpu to work correctly.
Emulators generally have a a poor performance comapred to native operating systems.
You could try using Androidx86 as native installation instead of emulator.
