Wi-Fi Calling Carrier - T-Mobile LG G2x

Is there any way to use Wi-Fi calling on a SIM/carrier other than Tmo?
Im with Canadian provider Wind if that makes a difference at all...

I don't believe so, at least it isn't something we as consumers could do. A quick google of the question points to wind's forums and there are a few topics about it and no one received any answers.
I would contact Wind's customer support and express some interest, otherwise you can use GrooveIP or some other form of wifi calling.

Short answer no. Because this system was created specifically for tmobile.

Ok but if you guys didnt know, wind is a sister company of tmo so even though wind calls the phone the "optimus 2x" the model we get is actually a p999. My model is also a p999 i cant even flash p990 rom on my phone cause i always get an error

I'm on wind. Do not, I repeat, do not flash anything meant for the p990. People have lost the radio in their phones. No baseband.

Very few carriers in the world offer UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) which is what is used for WiFi calling. Although some other carriers offer it the servers are set in the rom and I don't think they can be chagned, so it only works with a T-Mobile U.S.A. sim. It won't even work for their MNVOs such as Simple Mobile. It is also referred to as GAN (Generic Access Network) which is what it is referred as in the T-Mobile rom.
Here is a Wikipedia article with more information on it.

WiFi calling wanted on wind
Unfortunately, Wifi calling is not available on Wind. I hope one day they will consider implementing it (seeing as their frequency is not very good at penetrating walls).
As for the ownership, T-Mobile is a Deutsche Telekom AG subsidiary, while Wind is owned by Globalive, which is owned by Orascom, which is owned by VimpelCom Telecom As far as I know the latter (through acquisition of Orascom earlier this year) became the biggest cell phone service provider in terms of subscribers in the world. Hopefully we (Wind subscribers) will reap the benefits of such large consortium's financial prowess through better coverage and service 8)
EDIT: Actually not even close - Vimpel is 8th largest, but that is still pretty big

Unlocking my G2x.

I am thinking very seriously about unlocking my G2x an going to AT&T because my service sucks big time where I live at. I don't get service in my house an when I go outside it takes about 5 minutes to get a signal.....what's everyone thoughts.....I've already talked to AT&T an Tmobile and have my unlock code already
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I assume you've already verified that it's possible to get a decent signal on AT&T there?
AT&T gets great signal there an a lot more places also.....an its atleast 3g there about to be 4g an with tmobile I've only got 2g there

Why you say that for?

G2x supposedly does NOT contain AT$T 3G bands as previously advertised. As for home coverage, T-Mo is supposed to be launching an in-home signal booster for free (with 2-yr contract, probably doesn't effect upgrade timeline but haven't verified that) pretty soon. I think within the next week.

My understanding is the booster needs to be connected to your broadband internet router to work. So you will be using your internet bandwidth to use mobile voice and data. What a scam...
And any one visiting you (or you neighbor) with a t-mobile connection will use that signal (your internet) and pay t-mobile for that.

Hopefully your "source" isn't an otherwise reputable source of information because you (they) couldn't be more wrong. I have been a part of the beta for these boosters for the past 6 months. All it does is take a weak 3G signal (which means you must get 3G somewhere in your house for this to work) and amplifies it throughout your house. In my case in an upstairs window I got a weak 3G signal so I put the receiver in the window and the transmitter in my living room. Now I get between 1 and 6mbps down throughout my entire house. There is not even a way to connect this thing to a home internet router. I don't even have home internet.
I'd be curious to know where you heard this.
Oh and the G2x does not work on AT&T 3G bands. I have been in several states with no T-Mobile coverage and have used AT&T instead, but only on Edge.

I did not say I heard this from someone. I said its my understanding, and that was based on the similar booster I saw from Sprint. If t-mobile is implementing it in a different way, than i am sorry for my ignorance.

I didn't intend to sound overtly defensive, I just don't like when people start using the "scam" word when this couldn't be further from a scam. This device kicks ass and tmo wants to give it out for free in exchange for people's business. This device is normally $500 so this program is great. Hopefully they will also offer the equipment at full retail price for those uncomfortable signing or extending a contract.

Lots of countries are messed up. We just finally got all the carriers providing 3G here in Thailand. Two of them are providing 3G on 850Mhz (DTAC and TrueMove), one is on 900Mhz and the other is on 2100Mhz. A big grab bag. An AT&T phone will get 3G on two of them. Some TMO phones get 3G on the other one. But all phones get it on the 2100 carrier. I am using my G2X on 2100Mhz here (TOT3G) and my Nexus One on 900Mhz (AIS). So the USA isn't the only country with non-unified 3G bands.

Moving from ATT to new carrier need help with carrier and best android OS phone?

I am currently on a T-mobile G2 unlocked for AT&T... I am going to be switching over to sprint, T-Mobile or MetroPCS and would like your help knowing which carrier is best in your own opinion? and which android phone i should get on this carrier.
for the carrier
Unlimited data with no overage
( I am use to edge network so even throttled 3G would be nice and there is no 4G here yet anyway but there might be in Future)
Good service
(I live in the New England area, USA and AT&T sucks here. I cant even send out text messages half the time.)
I am leaning towards sprint but I got a friend at T-mobile who will help me out and plus i can keep my old phone and MetroPCS is so cheap... so... i don't know who to choose?
Things i am looking for are (but not necessary) are
Ease of root (with lots of ROMs <3 CM 7)
Physical Keyboard
fast Dual Core CPU
Big screen (pretty Necessary specially if no physical keyboard)
3D capability
I love my G2 so much that I limit my self to edge speeds...
If there is a better time to get a phone i can wait or if something is coming out that looks better then whats on the current market.
I would love your IMO on a Android OS phone .
Thanks for reading this ahead of time and i Appreciate anyone opinions.

Only AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM.
Note: There is also Simple Mobile but they use T-Mobile as their backend.
Check Wikipedia for a list of GSM providers.

Sprint is the best hands down. Compared to t-mobile, my bill is half of what it used to be for my family and has twice the coverage. I own a kyocera echo and it
Is the best phone I have ever had!

I was actually at the mall the other day looking at this phone. It seemed pretty cool and kind of unique! I never owned a Kyocra before but Seems like a really cool phone! I got your pvt message about it. Only real downside i can see is the signal core CPU really looking for dual core or waiting for quadcore to come out.
I use alot of process heavy applications. but I will play with it more the next time I go!... Sprint is really looking like the winner now!
Only thing that scares me about the Evo 3D is i remember they had some type of weird tracking software built in to the framework?... I could be wrong but i really don't like that...
My favorite story about Sprint was my friend called them saying he had horrible service and they sent him a small Cell phone tower that connected to their board band connection! absolutely free!
and using it will not interfere with their minutes!... that's just awesome to me!
I didn't see how Metropcs's wireless network is on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...work_operators. I did add it to the wiki though hopefully someone will fill it in.

Sprint is the only one of the big four to offer unlimited data, so sounds like that decides it for you, at least amongst them. I know nothing about regional carriers.

TMobile is killing me. The have me stuck in a contract that i did not agree to for the next two years. I have asked for a transcript of the upgrade/renewal call, they declined and have told me to drop it and not contact them again regarding the issue - I cancel i get two ETF's!!
Well i would hate the Hit on my credit, but will never pay them based on the principle of the matter.
My question involves unlocking the phone and using it on one of the pay as you go providers: Their coverage in my area is not great, but oh well.
I see online sites where i text to their number and they send back a code that unlocks the phone...anyone tried? any good?
What about the SIM card? Any info on how that will work? places to but etc..
any help whatsover? I've always just dealt with AT&T and Tmobile, have no experience unlocking or getting around anything like that.
G2x only works with GSM networks and 3g/4g only works with Tmobile network.
If you want to use your g2x with other carrier, you will still end up with networks who are resellers of either at&t and tmobile.

I don't think this kind of stuff shows on your credit report anyway.
How far up the command chain did you press the issue with T-Mobile? You had to have signed and agreed to something when you set up your account with them. That signed contract is all that matters.

That's the issue. Their over the phone system is flawed. The process is to speak with a REP then they transfer you to an automated system, which is the signing if you will. The auto system ststes your phone # and that you are acknowledging entering into a contract - NO DETAILS of the contract.
I am at the mercy of the communication between me and the REP and the accuracy of their input into whatever system they use.
I went Customer Service -Loyalty -Contract review. So three levels up the chain and was told in the last correspondence they will not investigate any further, Do not email again - Case closed.

That would be a nice savings...is it like a reload system. What interested me about Virgin was they had a $25 plan. I think it's $35 now, not sure if if the cheaper is available. Anyway, only had a few minutes but UTT and data. The trick was to download some program (forget teh name) and teh calls go through the data so no minutes are used!
Also, Metro PCS seems to be the major player around here.

+1 SM works fine. Had a data tower issues last week. But the cost is worth it.
They just rolled out a $40.00 monthly everything unlimited. Data is only 3G on that one though. And you cannot tether with them. SO that kind of sucks.

[Q] NO HSPA+/Only EDGE on Simple Mobile

So I bought a Samsung Infuse off Craigslist. I love it, it's awesome. I use the Simple Mobile $60/m plan. I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant before the Infuse. I used to run CM7 but used Bionix 1.31 as my ROM on my Vibrant. So I'm familiar with the ends and outs of this technology.
The Situation: Samsung Infuse running latest "unofficial build" CM7, flawless performance. After doing much research as to APN settings on Google and XDA I found that the internet is wrong with the APN settings for HSPA+ on a HSPA+ capable phones. I called Simple Mobile yesterday and we did an OTA (she spoke I listened) configuration of the APN and it's full of IP addresses nao. She said that will allow me to access the "4G" network. The thing is, it says "E" for EDGE at the top for my signal....consistently.
The Problem: The EDGE never changes, also according to various speedtest's I can't EVER break .50kbs DL speed off of WiFi.
So I tried switching out various modems that we're available to me for the Infuse via the CWM flashable's. I've seen NO IMPROVEMENT on data speeds after each modem.
So what exactly is the issue: Am I doing something wrong via XDA material? Or am I just ****ed on HSPA+/4G speeds?

You are right and WRONG all at the same time...fascinating isn't it!
Simple Mobile does in FACT use T-Mobile Towers, however; before I rocked the Infuse I've seen other speeds that read 3G/H. The Simple Mobile Network offers 4G/HSPA+ with the $60/m plan that I am currently on.
So with that information, how would you explain that a phone that is HSPA+ capable and programmed correctly that sits on the EDGE network and still doesn't break .50kbs DL speed??
I spoke with customer service at Simple Mobile and several other Simple Mobile retailers that told me up one wall and down the other that the Samsung Infuse programmed correctly should FLY without WiFi, this phone should act like the rocket it claims to be with data on the network.
Instead it is slow, sux and is worthless without WiFi.
So how come you tell me one thing, and several people that work for the Network and people that are affiliated with it tell me another?

I own a business; I know about selling. But according to my research, your a little or alot off; I just can't exactly prove it.
I know that AT&T offers 4Gish speeds (true LTE in like 2 cities in TX), and that T-Mobile offers 3.5+G-4Gish speeds.
I also understand the concept of up-selling, however that scenario does not apply with my current plan and situation.
Has it, or has it NOT been documented ANYWHERE that an HSPA+ capable phone on the $60/m Simple Mobile plan achieved true or realistic data DL speeds off WiFi?
I am no tech or anywhere educated in this topic. But why are you comparing network speeds with your wifi? Or am I missing something here?

I'm not using WiFi as a comparison, just as another option for higher DL speeds. Off WiFi I've seen snails crawl faster than my data can move.
I just want to know why I can't get anything better than **** with this great phone and supposedly "reasonably-good" network.

They simply dont know wat they r talking about, they r trained within their own company and dont know that other bands exist and not all 4G r on the same band, same for 3G. The phone was NETWORK LOCKED when I bought it, so I guess I suppose I'm glad you we'rent with my when I bought it lol.
I'll take into mild consideration that a multitude of people may not be aware of alternate existing networks.
The T-Mobile phone I had before licked ****ing sac, my buddy has a Captivate that OVER-SHINED my Vibrant any day of the week - So No, I won't buy a phone from a company that's supposedly being bought out BY AT&T.
From previous quotes: It seems that we are implying that ONLY a T-MOBILE BRAND PHONE can access the 4Gish HSPA+ speeds that Simple Mobile network (that uses T-Mobile towers) and not an AT&T branded phone.
Yes, it's true....the above DOES in fact sound stupid when I put it on paper. AT&T and T-Mobile use the same towers and Simple Mobile/Metro PCS (some other un-explained networks) use the SAME towers.
So how is it, according to posters: That replacing AT&T phone with T-Mobile garbage will allow me to acquire the DL speeds that reference HSPA+/4G speeds. AND NOT, under any circumstances is it possible for an AT&T phone that uses the same towers to get the same outcome?
OK, the last part really does sound stupid, I feel like I'm arguing with a mockingbird. Anyone else have any further to offer?

Actually I re-read this statement. AT&T don't use the same bands, something about T-Mobile uses 850 and AT&T uses 1700.
Would changing the band selection make a difference? How to if possible?
I think u can only change the APN, not the band, the band is hardware, not software. I had the same problem trying to use my Desire HD on tmobile and couldnt get anything more than edge. Will straight talk sim work on not "straight talk phones"?
Which cheapest phone of straight talk I have to buy to get their SIM-card?
I know they selling GSM and CDMA phones and don't want to buy wrong one.
Flat Out answer only the 2G or EDGE bands in the phone are compatible with ATT networks the other bands are different so if you want bettter speeds get att or use wi-fi because edge is all you will ever get no matter what you do to the APN
like on the previous post mentioned, i think most of the att phones doesn't have the radio that is capable of receiving the 3g/4g frequencies tmobile use. i could be wrong, but i think is a hardware problem rather than a setting you can change.
Simple mobile is Tmobile, 3g may never work.
Strait talk is a variety of carriers, depends on,the specific phone. The only known phones that work from the att network and have a Sim that works in other phones are the expensive Nokia smart phones. But those also have a Tmobile variant, I don't know how to tell the difference without looking at the Sim.
There is also consumer cellular, apparently that,is att but I don't know if it's full talk text and Web or how it's billed.

Consumer Cellular is VERY "no-frills" - it's only for VERY light users.
There is no AT&T phone that I know of that supports the 1700 MHz band required for T-Mobile 3G.
The only phone I know of that has pentaband HSPA+ (works on both AT&T and T-Mobile) is the Galaxy Nexus.
When I programmed my HTC Evo 3D i saw various optinos for cdma/eg/4g in CDMA Workshop & QPST Service Programming, what I saw was diferent types of bands and freqz, you might wana check out a phone's specs of tmobile and then check if those specs (frqz & bands) match with the one set on your device...
For example
The Vocoder settings
band prefferences :
band class 0/1/2/3/4/5/ sys a/b/
GSM DSC 1800
GSM extended 900
Etc etc.... check with the device's password on it's profiles and realms (settings I can view on my evo using ##data# )
I can confirm that the issue is with the phones. I just ran a test using my simple mobile card on an AT&T Infuse vs Tmobile Vibrant 4G.
AT&T Infuse
Edge connection with 50kps max
Tmobile Vibrant 4G
3G connection with 240kps max
I will be going to staright talk at the end on this billing cycle.

AT&T LTE on Verizon Variant?

Ok so I know that the Verizon M8 is unlocked and works on AT&T. I'm also aware that HSPA+ is supposed to be as good as it gets which is fine with me.because for the most part my service is terrible on AT&T as I live in a little Podunk town that doesn't have LTE. That being said the cities to the north and south of me both have LTE. I recently acquired the Verizon M8 and have made several trips to.both places and the phone always just shows H with the signal. Today however I happened to look at my phone and it's showing LTE, not only that but everything.is functioning. Internet, sending and.receiving sms and mms, and making calls all works.
Is there something.obvious I'm missing? To the best of my knowledge I shouldn't be getting LTE and my speed test pegged me at about 8 down but signal was weak so that doesn't surprise me.

Sorry for the random punctuation, I'm still getting used to this keyboard.

Why did you buy a Verizon M8 to use on AT&T? If you're on AT&T, get the AT&T version. There's a reason carrier specific versions are sold, and it's not only because the carriers are evil demons out to butt rape your wallet.
The network designs of Verizon and AT&T are radically different, and even if the M8 has the hardware for both the different variants are designed out of the box to only work with one.
So, even if you did get it to work with AT&T's network, who knows what kind of problems you may be experiencing. It may just be network congestion, it may be something else. Point it, it's tough to troubleshoot when you bought a device from the wrong carrier, as you just introduced a whole new crazy variable into the equation.

Slow down there captain. I'm not complaining about service issues or anything of the sort. I'm questioning whether it's actually possible that I could be getting AT&T LTE on the Verizon Variant. The circumstances behind why I have the Verizon version are completely irrelevant. I have an s5 I can use if I want and if it makes you happy it is the AT&T version.
I understand the differences between AT&T and Verizon's infrastructure, but it just so happens that the Verizon m8 has everything I need to function perfectly for me. So please take the time to actually address what I was asking instead of judging me for not purchasing the device you think I should have.

Bravo just another basher that was quick to judge and his only intent was to try to put you down. It sucks that you cant erase peoples comments off of your posting because its posts like that that you should be able to delete. My philosophy is if you cant say anything nice please dont say anything at all. Some people just love to put down others or their opinions, questions or comments. :good:
You realize that he didnt answer the question being asked and instead asked why did you buy that variant! And no, I dont think cloudraker was putting him down in any way.

Why don't you try Convert it to AT&T or Unlock more LTE band
