[Q] Can't flash any ROM after ICS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I decided to try the CM9 Alpha 11 on my Nexus S. I did like it, but I wanted to stick with GB until the offical OTA comes. But the problem is, I can't flash any ROMs in CWM after installing this ICS. It just says can't open package (bad) when I try to install .zip from SD-card.
I decided to try restoring a GB ROM to see if that helped. I dis manage to restore it, but installing a rom still doesn't work. I have tried with ROM manager and straight from CWM. I have tried multiple ROMs and with multiple different CWM versions. Nothing seems to work, not even a offical OTA .zip package works.
Somebody please help!

maybe you should try odin

You need to wipe system and boot, then restore or flash a new rom.
Go to Mount in cwm, format system, data, cache, and boot, then perform your nandroid restore or whatever you want to do.

are you downloading via wifi or 3g? are you able to open the zip files manually to make sure they're not corrupted?

[Q] What's the process for flashing CM7 nightlies?

Can I just buy ROM Manager pro and let the nightlies automatically update, or do I have to flash via cwm? If I have to flash via cwm do I need to wipe data? I want to be able to go back and forth between roms as well and need to know the best process for doing that.
Do not use ROM manager, for anything. Seriously, it's bad news. Just download the nightlies and flash through recovery the regular way.
i use rom manager to download them, but then i boot into recovery myself and back-up then i flash the new rom. been doing it like this for awhile now with no problems.
You can flash though rom manager. Where you will get stuck is if you get into a situation where you can't boot your OS, you can only boot into cwm if you've flashed using the nvflash method.

Better not use Rom Manager. CWM Flash is very easy so there is no need to risk it.

Rom manager uses cwm. You can use rom manager just fine. You just need to have cwm properly flashed using the nvflash method in case you get stuck in a boot loop and need to get back into recovery using power+ volume down.

If I am changing nightlies do I need to do a full data/cache wipe?

No. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache then install the update and reboot.

You need to do a full wipe when you're switching between different roms, like from stock to CM7.

[Q] Nexus S 4g official ICS problems

So I know there are various other threads similar to this out there, but none of them have solved my problem so here it goes. Yesterday, I restored back to my Official 2.3.7 from CM9. I had heard the the official ICS had come out and wanted to do a proper update from stock rom. So I did this and the tried to update, but the update failed half way through. Since then, I haven't been able to connect to usb and I haven't had a cell signal. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?
Edit: So now I tried, stupidly, to just reformat everything. I'm sure you could see how that was a problem because now I'm stuck in bootloader or clockworkMod Recovery unable to install any operating system whatsoever...
go into clockworkmod
How to Update or Clean Install Roms and Kernels
Clean Installing Roms:
1) format /system /data /cache /boot
2) wipe dalvik cache
3) flash rom and gapps
4) Boot up for the first time and it should work
5) Optional: Only do this after you booted up once. Flash the kernel.
Updating Roms and Kernels:
Wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache before updating
That should solve it. make sure you wipe ALL of those.

Bricked G2x trying to install Eaglesblood HELP!

Hi everyone, Im relatively new to the whole flashing and custom rom scene. I rooted my wind mobile (Canadian carrier) LG-P999 and ran CMR before trying to flash EGB. I used the instructions on the forum post to install EGB. In the installation process however, It looked like Gapps were already installed, I installed the Gapps I was told to download here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575199 again anyways. My phone will now not start, all that happens when I press the power button is the LG logo flashes, and then the Eaglesblood logo flashes then the phone shuts down. I have the CWM recovery file saved on my computer. Can someone help me unbrick my phone? thanks in advance, and please excuse my horrible grammar, I'm quite terrified right now.
EDIT: I messed around with my phone, and I am able to get into the Android System Recovery. Should I wipe data/factory reset? Will that solve my issues?
First get the rom you want to install on a sd card boot into recovery and wipe and install. If you factory reset it still will try and load eaglesblood. If using a cm 7 rom like eb or hellfire flash gapps right after the rom. Hope this helps

Anytime you flash rom, I recommend these steps. (Some may argue that it's over kill)
Get a Copy of Titanium Backup Pro.apk
Batch back-up all your user apps if you so wish. (These first two are optional, but I highly recommend)
Copy ROM, Kernel, and Gapps to MicroSD card. (EXTERNAL)
Boot into CWM.
Do a Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
select advanced-->wipe dalvik cache
mounts and storage-->format /system
Install zip from sdcard (not the apply update option!)
select your ROM, flash
select you kernel, flash,
<optional, if your on March BB and depending on ROM, you may need to flash new baseband.zip, forum search for it)
select gapps, flash
Reboot!
Sometimes upon booting you made need to wait 5-10min for phone to come up and be speedy. Be patient.
Hope some of this helps since your able to boot into CWM, which means your not bricked, yet. I;ve been there in a loop, called it soft bricked. Performed all of the above steps, never had the problem occur since. I jump between two GB 2.3.7 ROMS and two ICS ROMs with ease.

[Q] E:Can't open /sdcard... (bad)

Hello people, I know there are already threads about this but I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong..
I was running cyanogenmod on my device when suddenly everything started to force close so I decided to try out another rom, Miui.
I have done this flashing of roms before already which went all well, so I decided it would be a good idea to forget to make a backup :silly:
and this is what I did:
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe dalvik cache
and then I tried to flash Miui, but it says:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/miui.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
what I tried to solve:
Redownloading the zip in different browsers.
Trying different recovery (first try was in CWM, then I tried TWRP)
Tried flashing from a different SD card
Tried reformating SD card
I also tried to flash different roms, but everything that I try to flash gives the same error, so I think there is a problem with my phone and not with the zip which I try to flash.
Also something went wrong while trying to solve the problem and now I dont have any OS installed on my phone so I can only use recovery and a PC to solve this problem.
Can you guys please help me?
I have been searching for a solution on the internet for a whole day now and I have still not found a solution!

I already tried using another sdcard
what do you mean with downloading a new zip pack?
I did try to redownload the rom though.
when I get back from school I will try the twrp recovery thingy, I hope it works!!
Try flashing garuda kernel first in my signature there is a link for it, after that try with some rom, I doubt that this will work but.... that's the best I can think of now. Changing recovery is maybe your best bet. Also try with some other rom, who knows.

Install Superuser
your device does not appear to be rooted
blah blah
so somehow my phone is de-rooted
I'm going to install superuser and then try to instal a rom, I will post what happened.
wish me luck
okay now ive insalled superuser again, I tried different zips the first 2 it was complaining something about md5 but the third one installed fine(my first succes since a long time )
this means my phone is rooted again right? becauses twrp does not say it is not.
but I still cant install a rom though, but i haven't tried installing the kernel you mentioned, is this the right link for the download?
github.com/digitalcode
EDIT:
I couldn't find a good download for garuda kernel so I downloaded cranium kernel which installed fine!
but I can still not install a rom, I try to instal miui v4 revised, if that doesn't work i try to instal the stock west european rom, and if that doesn't work I try to install cm10, but nothing works all the same (bad) error!
help me, do I really need garuda kernel? if so can you please give me a download link to the zip?
EDIT 2:
Maybe if I use another PC to copy the zips to the SD, will that work?
I'm gonna try, I'm now open to try everything that comes to my mind, I really want my phone to be working again!!

SUCCES!!
I FINALLY GOT MY PHONE BACK!!!
I think the problem actually was with the copying of the file from my pc to the phone, what I normally did was : take out the sd card, put it in a reader and then copy the files to the sd.
Now I connected my phone while in twrp to my pc with a wire and then copied the zip file to the phone !!!
its such a simple solution but so hard to find!!
my phone is booting right now I hope it works!
it takes a long time, probably building the dalvik cache..
fingers crossed
All right! My phone is working again now! I'm going to install a mount 2 SD script and then i'mdone for a while with all this stuff! Thank you all who helped me!

TF 300T Partitions

Hey there!
I'm hoping that someone can help me out. My nephew who's a wanna-be geek was going to update my ROM (which didn't to be done really, but he wanted to show me what he was able to do). He went and downloaded the latest CM 11, rebooted and went into TWRP 2.7.0.1, did a factory reset, an advanced wipe, and did the Format Data. When he did that, it got stuck in a loop. Nothing happened. He tried to install the ROM he downloaded, and NOTHING! Long story short, by him doing the Format Data, he wiped out my partitions. TWRP, no matter what I try to do tells me it's unable to mount 'data' or 'media' etc. etc. Which is leading me to believe I have no partitions left. I've tried installing the latest update from Asus, and no dice. I've tried restoring backups that I have on my micro SD, and that's not working.
Can someone please help me and tell me how to fix this? Can I get my partitions back? I'm really hoping that I don't have to send this tablet off to Asus in Dallas, TX to have it repaired.
I'm using a loaner tablet from a rental store, hoping I can get my TF 300 fixed.
Any help is deeply and sincerely appreciated.

I was about to suggest you look in the correct forum, but I see you posted there as well. Anyway, your partitions are probably okay, they have just been wiped out, that doesn't mean you lost them. Have you tried reflashing the recovery? Were you able to flash anything with said recovery before that? Wiping the partitions in the recovery shouldn't have any effect on the flashing functionality, no matter which partitions were selected (except for sdcard, since that's where the ZIPs are stored), so there might be a problem with the recovery itself. Are you sure you have the correct one for your device?

Hey there Duchman ...
Thanks for your reply. I have tried reflashing the recovery like you suggested. And after that tried to reinstall CM11.Afterwards reflashing the recovery it says “Unable to mount data." I don't know if I need to flash a more recent version of TWRP, if that would even help.
Before all of this happened I could flash almost any ROM of my choice as long as it was KitKat supported. All of my backups and restores are kept on my micro SD so they aren't accidentally deleted. As far as I know it's the correct version of TWRP. It's worked for me so far, ever since I updated to KitKat.

You could try flashing a newer recovery first, I think 2.7.1.0 is available for your device. Also try doing a hard reset by cold booting - here's a how-to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTU38Ewh8qo (wipe the cache afterwards)
If that doesn't help, reverting to stock is probably your best option. Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757077 (be sure to grab the correct firmware and back up your files)
Have you tried installing any other custom ROM? Does it give you the same error when you try to restore your backup?
Here's what I've come across so far. I did the reset, and that did nothing.
Tried to flash the stock version, after a few seconds, TWRP popped up with FAILED.
I've tried flashing Omni ROM. It will flash, load up, and gets stuck at the boot screen or boot animation. This happens with just about every ROM I try to flash.
Been looking for TWRP 2.7.1.0. I'm not seeing it listed on TWRPs site. Where can I get a copy? Thanks!

Here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2772093
Also do try flashing another recovery, PhilZ for instance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597860
Did you try wiping all of the partitions again?
