I've read about updates needing the system applications installed to work. I have a few questions:
Do all apps have to be installed (including games)?
I've uninstalled some apps to download again to install them as user apps to move to my SD card. Do I need to re-install these back to system apps? Or is the fact they're installed good enough?
Will a factory reset put everything back the way it should be so I can just do that?
Finally, why do you have to have it the way it was to enable updates?
Thanks in advance. I've read quite a few posts about having to have system apps installed, but not why or which ones.

I have tried to get rid of the stock swype and install the swype beta. I tried to uninstall it and it is a system app. I tried bloater. I tried to simply delete the app. I thought I had gotten rid of it but the beta wouldn't install.
I am using a stock rom that is rooted and I have ROM Manager installed with the latest 5027 recovery.
I have played with other rom's and can install the beta with no problem.
Any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks.
Download titanium backup and delete it through that app. If you need help ask

I had tried that before. I first tried the "trick" way of getting rid of the app through the recovery and that didn't work. Then I converted the app to a user app and then uninstalled it. Then I installed the Swype beta and I chose the correct keyboard but the Android keyboard popped up.
Then I restarted the phone and then installed the Swype beta and all went well. I had tried this before except that I didn't think of restarting the phone.
So, I thank you for confirming that it could be done. This is what we do. We keep trying until we break something or solve the problem.
Did you delete the swype file under system/lib try that and see if that helps.

I used Titanium to convert to a user app. Then I uninstalled it. Then I restarted the phone. Then I installed the swype beta and it works great.
I just wish that it wasn't a beta and could be bought and updated. I have tried many keyboards and always come back to swype.

Why convert first? I never do that

Hi guys, quick question,
When I was still on stock rom I noticed my tablet would reinstall the apps I had previously downloaded as soon as I logged in. I just rooted and flashed a custom rom and it seem I have lost this ability. I have CMW on the thing. Any idea what I need to do? Manually re-installing everything as the nightlies comes in is getting a bit old.
thanks

if you're using the same google account it should restore.
During the initial setup it will ask if you want to restore from the Google account.

Thank you for your reply. I used the same google account, and I clicked the square saying I wanted a restore, but apps did not download. When looked on the google play, my tf101 did not appear. Weird.
How many devices appear in your Google Play list when you sign in online? There's a limit to the number of installs you can have for paid apps (5 I think..?). Try deleting unused devices, on unused instances of devices.

Hi, actually have more than 10 gb free on sdcard, but today while downloading chaos rings, when it starts to install it stops and says " error not enoughe disc space", that isn't true.
someone knows how to fix this?
Not sure why it would do that unless its looking to install on a certin partition that is different then this note. For that kind of money the develpper should come to your house and install it for you. Send develper a emaol with a log of your device specs and screen shot of error
Good luck
The problem is that the same app installed well one week ago, I don't think it's an app related problem, is the playstore
Only other thing, did you get an ota update recently? I know this shouldn't affect things but sometime updates are a real pain...
Same problem
Same problem here but with a Galaxy Note II. I installed the app last week, then unistalled it cause didn't work with root. But now the 1.1 version works with rooted devices but I get the "Not enought space" problem.
If your rooted there's a easy fix. This happens to me when a app doesn't uninstall correctly. Using a root file browser go to /data/app find the apk and delete it.

My /data folder is empty ^^ it's the only app that acts like this
What app are you using
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
No I mean the app I'm trying to install, Chaos Rings. I also tried to uninstall some apps but always the same problem, it's driving my crazy ^^
No I mean what app are you using to access the data folder
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Ok solved! thanks to you. I used root browser, because root expl works for me sometimes and sometimes doesnt start, but now it started and accessed to data/app and deleted a file of the game, now it installed.
Thanks again man

Is there another way? Because i checked the folder but there is not file from chaos rings there.
When I uninstall apps and clear data, are there any leftovers from the apps, i.e in windows there are registry leftovers, data, etc.
I have seen that the folders on the sd card remain, but I'm asking about the phone memory.
If yes, where are they stored and is there any way to remove them?
Try this app. It will assist you in finding leftovers

So as there is an app for this, i guess the answer is "yes"
As this app started with Android 1.6 and now is for 2.1 and newer there is still a question left:
Does ICS or JB also need this??
The app was just updated for JB 4.2 so I'm guessing yes but I'm still on GB so idk what goodies are available when using the app on later versions

What different functions and/or permissions does a system app get over a user app? Say I converted my gmail app to a user app via Titanium, backup, does anything change? This is my first time ever posting, so please bear with me as I get used to using a forum for the first time ever in my life. Thanks!
If you have updated Gmail via the playstore, I think it is already in your user apps. You shouldn't need to move an app at all unless that app needs to be there (like some keyboards or apps that modify the system). Most apps already in system will break if you move them, I believe too.

I have only 3 system apps at the moment, I either uninstalled them or converted them to user apps. One app in particular I read in the play store description, Notification toggle, says as a system app it gains more functionality than a user app. I have emailed the developer and hope to gear from him soon but I figured I might look elsewhere for an answer in the meantime.

I only converted the superSU app as a system app from within the app itself, no need to convert other files imo.
I have also done that, but in the end I just decided to leave it as a user app. It didn't always convert to a user app depending on the device, and also I know sometimes it gets lost and just reverts back to a user app anyways.

System apps get stored in /system partition. User apps in /data partition. System partition is read only so system Apks cannot be uninstalled except by mounting rw. Finally updates for system apps land in /data.

I appreciate that, so it seems to me system apps get no more functions or advantages over user apps. Am I correct?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Android apps will get no more permissions then what is coded in the app by the dev and accepted by user at time of installation. There is no difference in permissions for user and system apps. System apps come installed so you don't have any choice.
Note that these permissions pertain to android specific permissions like internet connectivity etc. Unix su permissions are different and both user and system apps can request superuser privileges.
So the bottom line is no difference in functionality. Only one diff system apps will survive factory reset.
