The Best WiFi Tether Version for EP4D - Verizon Droid Charge

I've been testing... Although the newest 3.1 Beta 7 may have fixed the need to reboot between tether sessions, 3.0 pre-12 Experimental is still better. Not only does it not have the reboot issue, it also gives me 4G speed on tether. The latest Beta has me limited to 3G.
Although I feel the user opinions available are better in Beta 7, in my opinion, WiFi Tether 3.0 pre-12 Experimental is the best application available for EP4D tethering at this time. No reboots + 4G tethering speed.
Opinions?

That's what I use. It rocks...when I don't have data drops. I've tried other versions but they were problematic, even though speed was marginally faster on newer builds.

My speed on Beta 7 was less than HALF the speed I got on pre-12, FWIW.

I use Open Garden, free off the market. I am on the road all day every weekday in my truck and I never have any issues with it. My laptop is online all day long ...

Ok, stupid question. Are these alternatives that bypass Verizon charging for wi-fi hot spot?

Yup. Since the phone is capable of becoming a wireless access point, being rooted means you're able to do it. Whereas, unrooted, you need Verizon's permission.
Honestly, it's BS. I pay for my data plan (ha, OK, I'm unlimited) and should be allowed to use that data as I see fit. If I'm paying $30 extra per month of what amounts to "internet services" who cares if it's on my phone or on my iPad?
Aside from Sprint and the smaller carriers (Metro PCS, etc), all of these companies are greedy like Wall St.

I've tried out what seems to be all the available wifi tether apps. can't tell you how many "pre" appsI've tried. I agree Open Garden is the best app, minus the fact encryption doesn't work.
3.0 pre 12 works great but is a complete battery drainer.

Rooted you say, for people who aren't rooted this fine tethering program has been released. It's a USB tether but hey, not everyone is rooted and this works perfect. http://www.bgr.com/2012/01/03/clock...tethering-to-android-phones-no-root-required/

Depends on what you are doing. Overall if you are just tethering to your computer PDAnet is your best bet. Xbox or PS3 (Ha if they ever get their network back) I would stay with Wireless Tether for root users.

If that's the case, has anyone been able to get wired tether (better anyway, data remains active on the device) to work? The htc tethering app seems to interfere.
Wireless tether works fine.
When I used "wireless tether for root users" my data was still active? I was able to make calls and reply to an email while being connected with a laptop.
I don't use it very often which is why I can't justify the extra cost per month. I had purchased "tether" while it was 50% for my blackberry for the same reason. They have that for android now to so that is an option for people.

[Q] Tether Apps that hide usage?

Hi everyone,
Wondering what apps people use for wireless tether that hide data usage from carriers. I currently use PDANET and also have wireless tether installed, but are there settings in wireless tether I can set so it will hide the usage? I did find some hits from other devices that had specific changed to the wireless tether source to do this, but nothing for the Charge. Any suggestions? Thank you!

No they can't. They can only see your traffic-for instance, logging on to Xbox Live will raise some suspicion because it wouldn't make sense for a phone to be logging in. Just don't use ridiculous amounts of data and don't go to any stupid sites.

Actually, it shouldn't be too hard for them to capture a packet and check the headers, which should tell them if the traffic is valid phone traffic or tether traffic. That is unless your tether software is re-shaping packets that flow through it.
But with all of their customers as long as you don't stand out, they won't look

That would assume that they have individual people scanning packets, rather than a piece of software monitoring packets and throwing flags. If you have software watching information, it doesn't matter how many sources it's coming from.

So far in 3 months I've used 165 GB. I do most of the bandwidth heavy stuff at night after 11 PM or 12 AM.
The thing is Verizon really doesn't care what you do. If a tower is congested they will throttle you, but that almost never happens except during peak hours. So if you're torrenting at 7 PM, your data may be (very temporarily) throttled to less than 1 mbps. But wait until 10 or 11 PM and you can consume data to your heart's delight.
Verizon's network is relatively robust (not nearly as good as European carriers though), so they could easily offer unlimited LTE to everyone, with throttling only during peak hours (4-10 PM). They don't do it though because they'd rather sell you 22 GB for $180, or just catch people with overage charges.
Yep I use all my data during night (10pm-6am) I work at that time and use my laptop at work with my phone. Verizon never said anything to me or slowed my connection

[Q] Tethering without T-mobile knowing

Is it possible to tether (use wifi hotspot) so that T-Mobile won't know that I am tethering? I have the "unlimited" 2GB per month data plan and would really like to tether without paying for the tethering option. Does anyone know if there is a 3rd party app or some other way around them knowing that I am tethering? I know there have been a couple threads about this but none gives a clear answer. Thanks!

I actually DID get fully blocked from Tethering back in January. They'd been warning me for 2 months when it happened. I had gone over my cap by quite a bit in December, if that makes a difference... crawling internet was better than no internet! Had received several warnings. Made user agent and other changes in my browser that was supposed to hide the activity, but they DID cut me off. Tethering stopped working completely.
Thankfully that was right at the time they were offering the free tethering add-on if you upgraded to 5gb data from 2gb so I called up and had them add that. I was already at 5gb, but I told them I'd be dropping my data if they didn't give me the tethering... Don't know if that is still offered.

tank you...nice post
If I'm not mistaken from a convo with Mr Verizon Store Guy, they stopped charging for tethering because of the rediculous amount of workarounds for close to every device that render their paid service pointless.
However, I heard somewhere online theres a clause for abusing the network in you end user contract associated with fees, but I'm not sure and didn't look into it too much. I don't use it too much and am not worried about my limits (cue wifi), so it'd prolly be wise to check yourself.
Long story short: search around as there are a number of ways as previously outlined. But should you choose to go bananas and over indulge in torrents or roms via 3g/4g, be aware of a potential bill the size of congressional legislation. Tether responsibly as bandwidth is shared by all network users. Don't be THAT guy

FWIW, tethering kills your battery life. You use a fair bit of internet at home, but not really a "power user" per se, so you're kind of in the gray area where this type of thing could work for you but still isn't a great idea IMO.
Sounds like a good idea if it saves cash at the end of the month. At home I easily blow through 200 gigs per month, but if my usage resembled yours, I'd do it.
