personally i think that rc33 was sent because of the option to check for updates manually. that leads to the conclusion that google is the one responsible for the updates. which leads to the conclusion that there might be a HUGE update comming soon. i would say a month or two.... is it going to be the cupcake? i dont know but i think its going to be a major one

I don't think this feature is going to help battery life.

not that it really matters. extended battery's are a godsend.

AFAIK, nothing. the plus is that, eventually, any phone with gps and google maps can use it (computers get in on the action too).
This uses cell-ID which is a general vicinity obtained from ur cell tower's signal. Most of the time, unless you explicitly turn it off, it's on by default. This does not drain much of your batter and is definitely much less than using the actual GPS chip.

besides that everything else is pretty much the same.... ok.
the advantace that this will have over loopt is that google will be rolling it out to a lot more phone platforms than Loopt is currently on.
makes me think about "big brother is watching" when i read about this app.... i won't be getting it....

Haha you won't be getting it? Looks like big brother is gonna bend you over & force you to get it! From what I've read, its gonna be part of google maps, correct? You have no choice. When you update to RC33 or whichever update it comes with, your gonna have it next time you open your maps app

I wanna believe that this is more than just a tiny taste from google. Part of me thinks that this update is as much about "fixing bugs" as it is building some behind the scenes framework for cupcake.
To me this make sense, upgrade some code now and get everything in place, such as the manually check for updates, to reduce the size of the next install...
I would love to belive that this is true...and part of me thinks we could see it soon.
Mobile World Congress starts on Feb 16th-19th, Google, T-mobile, HTC are all scheduled th be there...could be a coincidence, could not be. Just like the fact that RC33 will be rolled out between Feb 5th and 15th...so everyone should have it by the time MWC rolls around. Again...likely? No. Could it happen? Yes.

Big brother already can, has been, and unless we enact legislation to limit their power, will be watching!
Having one less app on your phone won't prevent them from tapping in to the carriers networks and yoinking your approximate positioning info (with CDMA triangulation its almost as good as standalone GPS; TDMA/GSM its within 50 meters or so--and yes, WCDMA/3G falls under CDMA..In fact, CDMA relies on GPS and GPS is code-division with spreading and walsh codes and everything...read into it, its interesting stuff)

CDMA = Code Division Multiple Access
GPS = Global Positioning System
CDMA doesn't use GPS at all
The other way round, it would kinda make sense as GPS uses orthogonal codes (but who doesn't these days...)

Im not sure if this has been discussed before as I did search but cant find anything.
Today I called T-Mobile for the first time to complaint that my MMS is not working (known problem for samsung galaxy s 4g) and asking them when is the update available to fix this issue, and My SMS is in and out as well ?
I didnt tell him what program I have/downloaded on the phone since he didnt ask.
I get transfered straight to higher (level 2) technical support. He said dont touch the phone while he was checking something and the phone will reboot. The phone did reboot and the SMS get fixed.
This is what Alarmed me so much.
The tech support ( I wont publish his name here) know exactly what software I have on the phone (downloaded from the market), what is currently running, he also know I have advance task manager among other thing.
He even knew my Gmail address I use on the phone and google market account.
How is this possible ?
Is there anyway I can block this because I dont like when T-mobile snooping on my phone. If they can see the apps I downloaded on my phone and know my gmail address, know what apps currently running, Can they also access my email through my phone ?
Honestly never heard of that. Thats wild!

dude there are 30 plus million subscribers in t-mobile. unless your a celebrity or a son of bill gates or something they wont waste their time nosing on what you install or who you talk to everyday. anyway that less of your problems if you stress about that, they got your full name and ssn in file and a credit card number. if thay wanted to mess you up thats what they will go for.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, it's just like any computer service company that can push updates to your computer.. All they did was push an update and had your phone reboot.. Now if you had some terrorist shizah on there, then I'd be worried, but other than that, they've probably already forgotten about you!

It doesn't surprise me at all. The OTA capabilities are there in a lot of devices, including your DSL or cable modem. Google owns everything you do on your Android phone, including your location even when you're not doing anything. Unfortunately, the Facebook mentality about privacy is winning.

They've been doing this for years, it's nothing new at all.. Notice how you call and they automatically know what kind of phone you have? Same premise. I've called multiple times with phones that were unlocked from other networks also, they could see the phone, and never cared. Take off your tinfoil hat, there's nothing to worry about.

No matter what phone you have, T-Mobile (and I'd assume AT&T) can find out what phone you are using, even if it's not a T-Mobile branded phone.
I wouldn't worry, they aren't gonna do some stupid **** with that, they just did that to repair your phone. I honestly doubt they'd risk losing a customer over a little thing like that.
Google is the one you should be worried about. They know where your phone is, exactly to the millimeter (I don't think that really works with the Vibrant though. xD).

To further this, its done through rescue me. It is built into the kernel. On the Vibrant froyo leaks i have leaked out it is there also. We just remove the Rescue Me app.
I can remove the drivers and credentials from the kernel if people are that concerned about it. I wouldnt be though.

A sysctl to enable/disable would be my personal choice, but I have yet to build custom kernels for Android (though have for FreeBSD and OpenWRT) so I don't know how feasible that is with the source access we have.

I'm a computer repair tech. One of the first questions I'm going to ask is have you installed any new hardware or software? Most of the time I've found out software was the root problem of the issue. Not always, just Most of the time. So, it doesn't supprise me that he can see what is installed on your phone. It gives him a idea of what the problem can be. I would be more concerned what NSA or space aliens are doing with your phone.

Yeah, one of Google's big thing at IO was that they wanted to eliminate the fragmentation, yet I haven't seen anything to indicate they're taking steps to achieve this.
Unfortunately it's one big advantage Apple has... they take a hard line position that the carrier doesn't touch the OS software, nor prevent the deployment of the updates. Not sure why Google is such a wuss when it comes to holding the carriers accountable for the timely delivery of their updates. AT&T says it's because they have to ensure a quality user experience, but comon, what AT&T customer actually believes that crap? LOL

I work for AT&T and I can tell you that we (the pions in the store) think its crap too. The lockdowns, the non-market app bs, etc. I do hope google puts its BIG foot down one day and steps up to plate on this issue.

hey, this is gonna sound like a really dumb question and way off topic but can you tell me how your notified when someone posts. I have always been one to read through forums daily but have never gotten too good at participating, as you might tell as I have been a member for 3 years and have very little posts. I personally have to try and remember the threads I participated in and see if someone replied. This seems very redundant but I don't see a better way to be notified. Thanks in advance
Is anyone's phone dying quickly after installing this. I even tried signing out and closing the app but my phone legit drains 10% an hour on standby. So I deleted the app. Now my wifi is turning on and off and can't keep a constant connection. Help?

I personally have seen no change since installing it, as for the wifi thing are you rooted and running any rom of sort of just stock? I have seen some wifi issues with the roms. Don't know if maybe the app sparked the problem or what but maybe you can backup your apps and reinstall. Good luck

The only true advantage that Apple has over Android is that they only more or less support one device. Android is spread amongst how many different devices? It's easy to put out lackluster updates to a single device, but putting out updates to 20+ different devices isn't so easy.

no it is not working. installing the custom apk does give you the video call option, but if you press it, it goes into landscape to prepare for video call and then it does nothing. gingerbread is needed since it uses the frontfacing camera api.

Yes, my phone's battery started draining in about two hours after installing Skype, so I uninstalled and things are better again now.
Even if Skype supports video on the Infuse, I don't think I will start using it unless they address the battery usage.

I hope in not posting in the wrong part of this forum but I was freaked out today at the tmobile store. It all starts last night when I goggle map searched "bar and grill" and later searched on browser "screen names" looking for screen name ideas. So, this morning my wife and I go to tmobile to pay our bill. The clerk in an attempt to talk to my wife says "so did you find a good screen name last night? " She had no idea what he was talking about. Then he asks "how was the bar and grill? " I was immediately angry. I know there was recent proof carriers collect our data, but not only does tmobile collect logs of most things we do on our phones, the make it available to any ass working in a tmobile store! I would v believed it was that bad without seeing it for myself. I told him to give me a print out of that info he was reading but he refused. So now I'm on an AOSP BUILD. The rom I was using before was weapon btw. Why is spyware in custom roms? Does anyone work at tmobile that can confirm this? Are AOSP builds the only way to combat this? I can't believe any asshole at a tmobile store can just punch in a number and see everything we do on our phones!
I'd love to know what you guys think. Similar experiences?

Well, I would assume all carriers log all data accessed (via mobile data connection at least) to supply to the gov't for profiling and legal purposes. But allowing Joe Schmoe at the store access to it is definitely a violation of your privacy. The contract probably allows them to monitor your activity but that's a bit of an overshare if you ask me.
Well you can always get check and or get rid of the Carrier IQ thing that tracks your information.

This story is BS. Store employees do not have access to that kind of data. Almost no one within T-Mobile could get anywhere near that kind of data even if they did record any of it. Also, none of the official G2x firmwares carry CIQ.

they dont know about updates. they dont know how much ram is in your phone, they have to ask you how to use the phone. but they know where you searched.

Regular Sales Reps or even Mgrs shouldn't have any access to that kind of information. None of the systems they use can dig that deep. They can see details about minutes, texts and your bill items, etc. but thats about the extent of it. Especially through CAM, Watson or Quickview. Although I would be surprised if the network engineers couldn't get that data if they were high up enough. The carrier iq thing isn't much of a surprise to me.
Weapon is based on the stock 2.3.3 rom so the OP is plausible, not probable, but certainly not busted. It has just been enhanced but most of it is stock TMO rom.
But I do think the OP is pure BS. That type of data would not be available at the store level and an employee who revealed such info would be subject to immediate termination.

Weapon is based on the stock 2.3.3 rom so the OP is plausible, not probable, but certainly not busted. It has just been enhanced but most of it is stock TMO rom.
But I do think the OP is pure BS. That type of data would not be available at the store level and an employee who revealed such info would be subject to immediate termination.

Sprint says we'll be "among the first" to updates, not "the first".

I'd be amazed if this is Google's doing.
Sprint's website says "It runs Android™ 2.3 (Gingerbread) the latest version of Android for smartphones." They're the ones that are clueopenic, not Google.
Don't get me wrong: I'm plenty annoyed at not getting OTA ICS. It's just that I don't actually expect Sprint to live up to their promises, since this is not something they've ever tended to do in the past. Sprint users go through this with every software update for every platform on every phone.

The update does come directly from Google. Sprint works with Samsung to create proprietary hardware drivers that contain everything you need to access Sprint's cell phone network. These drivers are then made available in binary only form to Google. Google then adds these drivers to their official build. The final product is then delivered directly from Google to your Nexus S 4G phone.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but in my opinion, it does not look like it's sprint's fault. It looks like Google is either lazy about releasing it, or they are too dumb to build a rom that's working properly so it's stuck in pre-release testing. However, this is just my opinion....but as far as actually building/releasing the OTA, that is 100% on google's end. whether or not the authorization is coming/has to come from sprint is another story entirely....the point is, if that is the case, google isn't doing their jobs and telling them to screw themselves so they don't look like the bad guy in this!! It's not sprint who will have the damaged reputation after this is all said & done.

<shrug> it's the way it's always worked.
This worked in our favor earlier when Sprint okayed deployment of Google Wallet on our devices and GSM users were foaming at the mouth to get it. In those cases, too, it wasn't Google (which has excellent reasons for getting Wallet into as many hands as possible) but the carriers which held up release.

that was a result of carriers' investment in other companies that developed very similar software to google wallet....exactly the same as when the GN was delayed for verizon because google wanted wallet on their official device and verizon had a coronary about it because they had already backed another company's software that does exactly the same thing.
as for carrier approval, google can only wait so long before they just snap and push the update anyway. carriers can not make the rest of the world wait for an update just because they don't want it released to their devices yet. Google needs to just ***** slap sprint, tell them to shut the hell up, and push the update before this damages their reputation any more than it already has. Like I said, it won't be sprint whose rep is damaged from all of this, just like no one looks towards verizon for the GN delay...the world will blame google, and they aren't even standing up for themselves.

Sure, they could build ICS for the NS4G but the 4G radio wouldn't work. Drivers aren't part of AOSP.
Also, didn't Google pulled the ICS update for the (tmobile) Nexus S? If that's still true, they're clearly working out the issues with ICS before releasing it to the NS4G, etc.
It is most likely *not* Googles doing. I don't know where half of you get these crack pot ideas from that Google or any other OEM is in control over how and when they push an update.
- OEM builds ROM
- OEM submits ROM to carriers (i.e. Sprint branded phone would require Sprint to approve the update).
Carriers can be total dicks about updates and providing OTA. I've seen it all first hand from when I had a Motorola Milestone (Motorola telling us the 2.1 has been built and has gone through testing but they are waiting for carriers to approve them on their networks) we had to waiting months for the updates due to some carriers.

Driver binaries are on Google's servers for nexus devices. 100% built from source and 4g works just fine.....

When did this start being true?
It's absolutely true that carriers CAN prevent official release of an update for any reason, or for no reason. They've done it many times before and they'll do it again. Sprint has a long track record of doing exactly this.

You have an awfully lot to learn about how contracts work.
If I run a massive business and another massive business violates my contract with them (for example, pushes an unapproved update to what I think of as "my" devices irrespective of the beliefs or desires of my subscribers), many lawyers are going to be fed and I will expect a massive transfer of assets from that other company to mine.
mstevens is dead on. Sprint will not allow the push of an ota until they can be sure this update won't toast peoples phones, and for the people in the world that have a nxs4g and don't do modding, if the update is broken, they can't just fix what Google's update did. My brother has the GSM version, and received the update, and honestly were not missing anything. The user made roms are already becoming superior builds anyway. We will eventually get the update, I for one am glad sprint said no at the moment though, I would hate to waste my time on a broken ota lol

Ok, I understand how contracts work. My point is this: yes, google has a contract with sprint (or any other carrier, for that matter) to provide radios, wimax drivers, what-have-you, and I understand that if sprint won't sign, there's not much the manufacturer can do...I get that. But my biggest concern with all of this is that google is not flexing their muscles. They have made a guarantee to their customers (not explicit, but still implied) that they would provide ALL NEXUS UPDATES in a timely manner. Sprint is now holding google back from seeing this implied promise carried through, and the fact that other manufacturers are already pushing full ota updates now makes google look bad (grounds for a lawsuit).
I understand that if google were to break that contract by circumventing sprint by releasing the update anyway, they could be sued...I get that. However, google could also counter-sue for making customers wait an unreasonable amount of time for an update that is, by all rights, a "god-given right" to all nexus users prior to anyone else getting it.
Now let's talk about how many people use an NS4G to develop software that they get paid top develop. By sprint not releasing an official update, they are now inhibiting developers from doing business, and therefore they are taking money out of people's pockets. Yes, I know this last example is far-fetched a little bit, but honestly, it's really not all that far off. Yeah, people can just compile aosp themselves, and if they are truly developers, they should know how to do that....but let's say they are working on one particular app that is exclusive for sprint users, and they want to make sure it will run properly on sprint's network via an ICS handset....oh, wait...they can't because sprint are a bunch of lazy pieces of **** who won't sign. This is grounds for class-action, IMHO.
I may not be a lawyer, but it's blatantly obvious to me that if sprint holds out long enough, they are absolutely 100% vulnerable to class-action suits...and maybe even a suit from google, as well. Let's face it, no one but sprint & google execs really know the terms of the contract, but for all we know, it IS in the contract to provide timely updates. If this is the case, I hope someone gets sued like a SOB for this delay, because it's unacceptable!!!!!

I suggest that this LARGE chunk of nexus users may be better served by one of the many other smartphone mfrs who provided a pure ICS update (i.e. no BS extra UI layer and no bloat) over the holiday. Which one will you choose? Oh, wait.

actually, since the drivers, kernel, etc. was all pushed to google's update servers WELL over a week before christmas, they wouldn't have been working during the holiday at all to get it pushed to NS4g...they just had to click a few buttons....something I've done a few hundred thousand times in the last 5 minutes.
BTW, no need to be a smartass about it. if I want to switch from nexus to get a pure android ui, I can always just root and modify the ota to have a stock theme. So now what do you have to say about that, smartass??? Oh wait...

You're making multiple assumptions. You assume that by the existence of particular source files on a particular server, you know what Google's stance as to the public release candidacy of a compiled package is. Please explain why you believe this. There are only two ways we could know such a thing:
1) Google publicly declares it (i.e. this compiled package IS ready for public use... or vice versa)
2) Google actually pushes the compiled package (in the absence of such an action, the logical assumption to make is that they are not ready to do such a thing yet, for their own reasons... i.e. there is still something else they need to do. NOT that they are "too lazy/stupid to push a few buttons")

If you decide to "leave Google" because of your discontent, which handset vendor will you turn to? Who do you believe is a better option?
