Hello all,
I travel A LOT for work. I have been to Bahrain with my Infuse before, switch Sims, works like a champ... I was on REFUSE back in Sept last time it worked.
This trip I am on CM7, and I have every modem, so I know it is not a modem issue, but neither my AT&T sim or my Zain sim will get service. In my Xperia Mini, both Sims work. Odd thing, AT&T sim will tell me I have a voice mail, but will not connect to a tower.
In the States, both Sims work, and the phone has worked here in the past. I have even flashed back to stock, and still no joy.
Is there a way to make the towers think I have an i9000, that is the only thing I can think that it could be, but it used to work... Imagine going from an Infuse to a Xperia Mini, my eyes are killing me....
What am I missing? Those that have seen me in DEV section, I always figure things out, but now I am asking for a fresh idea for you guys, I need it... Allen
I had some problems with some of the more recent modems in both Kuwait and Qatar. Then, after switching back to an older modem it took more than 15 minutes for me to finally connect to a network. I think I went back to UCKI4 and it worked for me, but again, it took a long time to finally connect. I'd try one of the older modems and just letting it sit for a while to see if it'll finally connect for you.

Being you are in Dubai, your reply is my best hope... I have every single Gingerbread modem in my CWM_ZIP folder except UCKI4... I just flashed it, will leave in on over night to see if she finds a tower, I am sure you too had to catch Zain towers, so I have hope....
Has anyone ever used a FROYO modem on Gingerbread... Refused was on UCKD5 when I was working in Sept, but I have been scared to try a FROYO modem... I do not have my Download Dongle with me, so I do not want to Soft Brick my phone over here....
I want to move my Zain sim over, but I need it talking to a tower for work, so I am hoping that the ATT Sim finally works on UCKI4. Thanks again for the tip, hope it works.... Allen
No luck... I even managed to soft brick my phone, and no jig here... Could not find any 100 ohm resistors, but I did find 4 1200 ohm, and in parallel I will get the 300 ohm to pin 4 and 5... Then I am going to try Refuse again and see if it still works. I miss my Infuse, but love Bahrain.... What to do...
I have now learned that a 500 ohm rheostat (like used on Guitars for Volume) is the best way to get 301 ohms, so I was able to get the phone back, flashed complete original stock rom...
Still NO SERVICE.
Currently back to 2.2.1 UCKD5 (tear)

Network Unknown
Signal strength -51 dBm 31 asu (This is a good signal strength)

Please someone one, I am stumped... How can a phone go from working, change a few Roms, softbrick a few times, then NOTHING...
Hmmmm, Service Mode..... RAT Selection Option is Restricted, did I lose my Break?
Is it possible I corrupted my nv_data.bin file... Even after I format, reflash, no luck.

hi, allen. Just a dumb question. Does apn settings have to be changed?
or a factory reset does all that?

As luck would have it, i fixed it today. I already had an APK for System Toolbox. A app for the Captivate. Under Hidden Codes (sgs users) , select service mode and gsm 900 was off. I just selected all bands and I am now on UCKL2. And after 2 Weeks I am using my Infuse is talking to the tower, life is good.
The APN is for 3G and MMS not basic calls. I am on a prepay Zain Sim so i don't want that working...

I seem to be having an issue with my data and am trying to narrow down the reasons for my problem. The issue is I CANNOT use HSUPA (H) for data, I always get a connection timed out issue. I put the phone in 2G GSM mode only and have data working, but of course I was spoiled with better speed I can't stand it.
My question is if AT&T could be doing upgrades to the towers in my area, will that affect my speeds, or is something broken internally in my phone. When I select WCDMA mode, it takes FOREVER for it to connect and says searching for a long time but does connect or displays (H) with 3/4 bars of signal. My friend has an unrooted captivate on 3G and has no issue with data. Does anyone know the cause of this.
I have tried a few different modems (jl3, jk4, kp1....) all the same and have tried 2 different OS's with same data timed out issues while trying to use (H). I am currently in the process of flashing back to stock to see if that will resolve the issue. Thank you for your time guys.

H doesn't necessary mean HSUPA. It simply means HSPA (HSDPA only or HSDPA and HSUPA). You didn't mention anything about your firmware but I guess you are experiment with non-Captivate firmware and modem combination trying to get HDUPA working. From what you described, it seems your current firmware and modem combinations lacks 850MHz support for 3G (most European firmwares lacks 850Mhz) and your local tower happens to use 850MHz, not 1900Mhz. Just a guess.
Make sure you have the modern set to proper frequency (WCDMA 850 or 1900) for your area. The modem thread can tell you all about how to do it.

Sorry guys, I guess that was an important part I forgot. I was running Andromeda and thought the same so tried Cognition 4.1.1. Also after going to stock 2.1 I still have the data issue. I can connect to wifi just fine, but no using ATT data will work.
I called customer service and walked through the steps as usual and after some looking into my area, he said there were 3 towers reporting severely degraded. It just sucks seeing my friends phones working with no issues. He said that repairs are stated to be finished sometime in the next few days and to call back later in the week if the problem persists.
Looks like you tried both i897ROM and non-i897 ROM, so it's not firmware related.
Did you try to put someone else's SIM into ur captivate? How about some other devices in ur area?

I didn't think about trying my friends sim card. I will test tomorrow morning. Ty for the idea to isolate the problem to my phone!
umm not really related to your phone. but im suggesting its the tower upgrades getting them ready for 4G that is causing your phone to act up. i have a HD2 and we have 3G down here. but since early march i get nothing but EDGE. what happens in the month march? AT&T will be launching 4G in selected markets. it was confirmed once i was talking to a AT&T tech. so im just waiting to see what happens in the end of this month.
NOTE: it could also be your sim card having problems. AT&T replaced mine thinking it was a problem with the sim card since i have a AT&T native W350 and i was getting the same problems. call them up again and ask to talk to a tech and tell them your having a problem with your sim card. they will set you up a appointment at a corporate store. free of charge.
I did not think that the Captivate's hardware was capable of HSUPA?
Is it?

Sorry for nor replying sooner. My 3G data seems to be working again. My lack of in depth knowledge is why I put the hsupa above when my phone displayed H I didn't know what to call it.
It must have been tower upgrades. I didn't restart my phone and left it on the charger overnight and the next morning I had no issues. I did a reboot of the phone as a test and connected with data with no issue. Too bad as I was close to getting a replacement, though it would suck and be my luck to get one with other issues. Mine is a 1007 and works perfect (other than the obvious GPS.)

Ok. So I ran into a serious issue and it most likely has something to do with the 3G radio.
Here's what happened. Phone was down to about 15% batteries after some Youtube and Angry birds. I was at my folks place and the cell signal there is not as strong, but still a bar showing. I noticed the phone was quite warm, but thought nothing of it since I was using Youtube/Angry birds. Check a few emails and noticed the batters quickly dropping to 12% within a few minutes and noticed Battery Status Monitor was reporting 990mA draw. I was alarmed, but didn't think too much about it and went to have dinner with the folks.
about 30/40 min later after dinner. The battery was dead. Didn't have my charger with me, so I didn't plug in for another couple of hours until I got home. Plugged in, booted up, everything was fine, except it would not connect to cell service stating "No Service". I then tried a bunch of things, rebooting, swapping out the battery, swapping out the SIM, but no avail. Swapping the same SIM to my old HTC works fine and connects on AWS 3G network.
This morning I tried another SIM that not on AWS, and it connects (assuming on 2G/EDGE network). Swap back in my original SIM and back to "No Service" (my provider only has 3G AWS service).
So at this point, I'm pretty convinced I have a hardware problem so I restore the stock Froyo ROM to return my phone...then magically, I'm back alive on the 3G AWS network!
Someone tell me what's going on!
I haven't tried to reflash CM7 again. Quite frankly I'm quite scared this may not be hardware problem and maybe a software issue instead, and may be stressing the 3G radio.
Help!
First, not to be rude, but this isn't development.
Secondly, what carrier are you using that only has 3G service and nothing else?
To me it sounds like your SIM card could just be shot, especially if you were able to insert another and it worked just fine.
Then again, that's hard to determine if your carrier actually only offers 3G service.
wrong section and a hard reboot always works ! volume up and power down hold for 10 seconds until u see lg

How do I move this thread?
My original SIM is fine. It works fine on my HTC in 3G. The other SIM is with another carrier that's NOT on AWS spectrum and my G2X connected in 2G only. I'm in Canada, our new carriers Wind, Mobilicity, Public, etc are on 3G+ AWS only with no 2G fallback. I can restore my CM7 and try a hard reset if it doesn't come up. But I'm just concern, there's a software issue that cause this failure.

I had just flashed the newest CM7 Nightly and noticed when I woke up in the morning, my SIM wasn't being read. I wiped, re-flahsed, no workie. I tried a hard reboot, nothing. I even flashed to build 90 and still didn't read my SIM.
I'm loading xhoarder's tweaked GB right now...and it STILL isn't reading my SIM!!! What the hell happened?

I have a i727 SR that I bought off a buddy. I first tried to use it as a go-phone with no luck. I then bought a Straight Talk BYOD ATT sim and have tried to use it. When I first activated it I had voice and SMS. I traveled down the road and the 4G led popped up and I then had voice, sms and data (using the tfdata APN). When I returned to my home town, I could only connect to Edge towers and have to service at all. I started out on stock JB, I've tried stock Gb 2.3.5 and the 2.3.6 update. I used the UCLD2 rom linked in the "Unlock free proceed at own risk" thread. And I've also tried stock ICS as well as the SGH-T989_UVMC6_radio w/JB (not sure if that was the correct ROM to use with the TMO radio. I can take that sim and put it in my LG Thrive P-506 and have to problems connecting to 3G (UMTS). I've tried all the APNs I can find (ST website says to use tfdata). I've read, studied, and experimented and now I'm asking for help. Any suggestions?
well for starters the tfdata settings are the correct settings, also check if their coverage map and see what's supposed to work in your area. always test on settings that you know worked previously.
The radio should not be a problem. The stock JB 4.1.2 radio UCMC1 works on all JB ROMs I've tried many of them. Not sure why you tried GB but I would recommend using stock JB as I know straight talk works with them (though you may have some MMS issues) just so you can verify everything works fine before moving on.
and owmblem
there are at least 2 different apns for straight talk att if you have a sim from say the nokia e71 do a search for E71 apn settings thease are the same from as the original setting from when straight talk FIRST put out there BYOP. at one point they switched to different settings that are currently on there web site. the settings that are on the web site DOES NOT work with every stragttalk att sim you have to try both and see what works for you also they just started selling the att sims again and there might be new settings for those also so you might have to look around to find the correct ones
The sim card that I received works fine in my old thrive go phone (lg p-506). In my skyrocket the only time I have service is when I connect to a 3g or faster tower. When im at work my SR will only connect to edge and I have no service. When I put the sim in my thrive it connects to 3g And works just very slowly. Im almost at the point were I believe it's a hardware problem. I need to find a post-paid att sim and see if it is the phone or not. Another thing that complacates testing is that I have no service at my house. BTW, Thanks for the replies.
I was able to connect to 2g and 3g towers after I installed RUXMA7 r adio and manually selecting frequencies. Does anyone know why I connect to towers through which I don't have service? It's a real pain when driving selecting different frequencies.

Because straight talk service sucks so it connects to real providers. Check your apn and roaming settings or get a better provider.

Hello everyone. I was hoping that some of you that are more knowledgeable about this stuff could help me out here. I recently flashed from CM 10.2 to KitKat (4.4.4), which everything went smoothly for the most part. However, I've noticed that my phone constantly has no service. I should probably state that I live in an area with very low service to begin with, but prior to the flash I was able to get at least a bar inside my house. Now, I'm unable to get anything.
The first thing I could think of to check was my settings in the phone. The data is enabled, CDMA Roaming mode is set to automatic, CDMA subscription is set to RUIM / SIM, and the Preferred Network Type was Global. I wasn't familiar with the global setting as I was used to seeing the LTE / CDMA / EvDo options there. So, when I clicked on it, it now gives LTE, 3g, 2g, 1x, and Global as options. I tried changing it to 3g, but the changes would not save that way. The only way I could get them to save was to power off the phone, take the sim card out and put it back in, and then reboot and switch them. Once i pick a new setting (which is now set on 3g), it locks it and I can't change it again without removing sim card.
When I look in About Phone > Status section, I'm seeing the network says searching for service. The mobile network type is unknown. The service state is out of service, and the mobile network state is disconnected.
Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? If so, I would truly appreciate any type of guidance you guys or gals could give me. Thanks!
I didn't read your entire post but myself and several others have reported signal issues after 4.4.4 flashes on all different ROM types. I think 4.4.4 is just picky about what firmware and baseband you're running. I flashed a few different RPM packages too but in the end I got lucky flashing the BLK3 modem and it seemed to fix my issues. I had noticeably poor signal strength most of the time and a couple times I would look down at my phone and I'd have no signal at all.
Maybe a dev or expert can shed some light on the root of the issue. I don't know enough about under the hood stuff to make an expert diagnosis.
Edit: The unanimous fix that everyone appears to agree on is to flash the MF1 AIO (all in one) package and then flash the ML1 modem only. Problem is finding a legit source for the MF1 aio package seems to be up in the air.
Like I said though, I didn't even do this. I was just trying all kinds of combinations of modems/aio's/ and rpm's and I got lucky. 2 days now with a solid signal at all times. LTE speeds are blazing too, 45 down and 10 up.
Check ur imei number. Or flash a backup and see if that fixes ur problem.

EDIT: Turns out it does work, but only for a few minutes until it disconnections. Data confirmed to work during this time period, same as text.
Ok so I've tried searching around with no hope.
I have a One S T-Mobile phone, and using it with both stock and CM, the 3G does not work.
It a few times it would connect and then jump off. It doesn't seem to even recognize the existence of 3G now. On the network selector on the quick settings panel in CM, it only lets me select 2G... setting it back to 3G prefered doesn't help at all.
I'm on WIND mobile, which the 3G uses AWS 1700/2100, which is clearly supported by this phone if you look on GSM Arena (it's the tmobile version for sure, it's pasted across the front of the phone and throughout the stock rom)
Not to mention, I'm told most, if not all, T-Mobile phones work with WIND. Is the 3G radio broken perhaps? Is there a way I can check this?
Anyone have any clue?

Ok, so apparently it does connect, but only for 2 or 3 minutes before disconnecting. The data works fine, the service works fine, but it just bails on the connection after a few minutes until i restart the phone.
