I seem to be having an issue with my data and am trying to narrow down the reasons for my problem. The issue is I CANNOT use HSUPA (H) for data, I always get a connection timed out issue. I put the phone in 2G GSM mode only and have data working, but of course I was spoiled with better speed I can't stand it.
My question is if AT&T could be doing upgrades to the towers in my area, will that affect my speeds, or is something broken internally in my phone. When I select WCDMA mode, it takes FOREVER for it to connect and says searching for a long time but does connect or displays (H) with 3/4 bars of signal. My friend has an unrooted captivate on 3G and has no issue with data. Does anyone know the cause of this.
I have tried a few different modems (jl3, jk4, kp1....) all the same and have tried 2 different OS's with same data timed out issues while trying to use (H). I am currently in the process of flashing back to stock to see if that will resolve the issue. Thank you for your time guys.

H doesn't necessary mean HSUPA. It simply means HSPA (HSDPA only or HSDPA and HSUPA). You didn't mention anything about your firmware but I guess you are experiment with non-Captivate firmware and modem combination trying to get HDUPA working. From what you described, it seems your current firmware and modem combinations lacks 850MHz support for 3G (most European firmwares lacks 850Mhz) and your local tower happens to use 850MHz, not 1900Mhz. Just a guess.
Make sure you have the modern set to proper frequency (WCDMA 850 or 1900) for your area. The modem thread can tell you all about how to do it.

Sorry guys, I guess that was an important part I forgot. I was running Andromeda and thought the same so tried Cognition 4.1.1. Also after going to stock 2.1 I still have the data issue. I can connect to wifi just fine, but no using ATT data will work.
I called customer service and walked through the steps as usual and after some looking into my area, he said there were 3 towers reporting severely degraded. It just sucks seeing my friends phones working with no issues. He said that repairs are stated to be finished sometime in the next few days and to call back later in the week if the problem persists.
Looks like you tried both i897ROM and non-i897 ROM, so it's not firmware related.
Did you try to put someone else's SIM into ur captivate? How about some other devices in ur area?

I didn't think about trying my friends sim card. I will test tomorrow morning. Ty for the idea to isolate the problem to my phone!
umm not really related to your phone. but im suggesting its the tower upgrades getting them ready for 4G that is causing your phone to act up. i have a HD2 and we have 3G down here. but since early march i get nothing but EDGE. what happens in the month march? AT&T will be launching 4G in selected markets. it was confirmed once i was talking to a AT&T tech. so im just waiting to see what happens in the end of this month.
NOTE: it could also be your sim card having problems. AT&T replaced mine thinking it was a problem with the sim card since i have a AT&T native W350 and i was getting the same problems. call them up again and ask to talk to a tech and tell them your having a problem with your sim card. they will set you up a appointment at a corporate store. free of charge.
I did not think that the Captivate's hardware was capable of HSUPA?

Sorry for nor replying sooner. My 3G data seems to be working again. My lack of in depth knowledge is why I put the hsupa above when my phone displayed H I didn't know what to call it.
It must have been tower upgrades. I didn't restart my phone and left it on the charger overnight and the next morning I had no issues. I did a reboot of the phone as a test and connected with data with no issue. Too bad as I was close to getting a replacement, though it would suck and be my luck to get one with other issues. Mine is a 1007 and works perfect (other than the obvious GPS.)

I have been going round and round with att on this issue. My infuse will bounce between hsdpa and umts signal every 30 seconds no matter where i am. They believed the issue was with the phone and replaced it issue still happening. Then advised that it was a network issue and opened a ticket with the "network department" who advised there were no issues in the area. They then removed and re added my data plan with the issue still occurring. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
It's normal to be connected UMTS. You will only get HSPA when you are actively streaming data up or down.

Is that issue causing data connectivity issues?? On my first Infuse it would show me with 3-5 bars of signal, but when I tried accessing data on apps like the Market, Facebook, or stock Web Browser it wouldn't connect and would give me an error instead. AT&T doesn't know why that was happening. They eventually told me to exchange my phone.
It is and i get the same error it says network unavailable. This is the second "4g" phone this is occurring on

Wow, I had the Atrix and that was happening to me with it as well. I don't remember if it went away after I updated the firmware on it, but I had other minor issues with it as well so I returned it and got the Infuse.
I've been trying out my 2nd Infuse and it seems that it doesn't have network connectivity issues like my prior Infuse, but I've noticed it does start acting up when I use the stock web browser. Maybe the whole issue is being caused by the browser!
I am taking mine back today it cant sit on HSPA+ for more then 30 seconds at a time and this is where a cell tower is almost next to my house and i can see it.

I've been streaming on Pandora for 2 or 3 hours without an issue. My network type switches between UMTS and HSDPA constantly, is that normal?
After working with tech support they feel it is an issue with the phone as it is not locking on to a tower signal. I was also informed that it not a common issue but has been seen with a few of the infuses sounds like a bad batch of phones may be floating around

Man that sucks!! I started having network issues with my 2nd Infuse last night. Today I tried searching the Market and it just kept loading till it eventually gave me an error! I guess Best Buy has the bad batch. What sucks is that the rep at Best Buy almost gave me a hard time when I told her I wanted to exchange it due to network issues.
Spoke to AT&T again and the rep told me that the update isn't for any network issues and that she hasn't heard of any problems with the Infuse so she advised me to either get another Infuse or return it and get some other phone.

Hello,
I'm a new android user and I got the Infuse today. After reading this thread, I tried to see if my Infuse was having the same problem. I noticed when I'm not using data, it goes in to UMTS. However, if I start browsing then it'll go to HSDPA, would this be considered normal or defective?

Not sure if that makes it defective but it happens on mine. Does it have issues loading websites?? Every once in a while when I search for something on google or enter another website my phone won't even load the site and when that happens I try an app that uses internet, Market or FB, and it won't load and finally give a connection error. AT&T doesn't know what causes it.

Congrats on getting the Infuse and moving to Android!
You're really lucky to start your Android experience with such a great device.
Switching from UMTS to HSDPA is totally normal. The battery would die very quickly if the radio had to maintain a constant HSDPA connection. The default is UMTS, and when transferring large amounts of data, the phone should automatically switch to HSDPA.

I haven't had that problem yet, but I've really mostly been using wifi to surf, but I guess I should stop so I can figure out if my device is defective. I'll let you know if I have any issues.
As an experiment, try downloading the app "Net Ping" from the market and set it up to ping every 3 seconds or so in the background. Now if you check your status, it should maintain a constant HSDPA connection.
Hmm...now I'm wondering just how quickly the battery will die? Time to find out.
I have a rooted Tmobile phone (Octane) and loving it. This isn't a 'root' question, but a signal issue that I noticed before and after the root (not related to rooting).
Anyhow, when I leave an area (in my vehicle) that has low Tmobile signal, it switches to ATT and says "no service". That's fine, but what I noticed is when I return to the same area, it will take an additional 4-5 miles of driving into a strong Tmobile signal area before it pick up the Tmobile signal.
In my area, there are no agreements to roam on ATT's network, so my phone is dead until I re-enter Tmobile signal area.
My question is, it is a nuisance that my phone can't use Tmobile towers as a priority. It seems to hold onto ATT's towers longer than it should. What can I do to fix this issue if possible?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: My wife has the same phone and it does the same thing.
Have you changed modems? That seems to fix many issues pwople have with connection issues.
Not sure to be honest. I used this process to install Octane's ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
I did see something in Odin about "Modem" but don't know if that is the proper way to install a modem or not.
This thread will tell you how to change the modem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436
FB also recommends one in that thread iirc. But other members have better luck with different ones. Im told it depends on your location but nobody has said which modem is better in what part of the country.
Awsome, thanks for the leg work on finding that for me! Is there a way where I could opt out of roaming so my phone uses Tmobile as a priority 'all' the time?
This is just incase the modem doesn't seem to help. Just one idea I had.
Also, KJ6 modem is the one I need correct?
Not sure of the roaming opt out.
FB puts the KG4 modem is his personal build of VB. Im using KG4. I would try all of the GB modems to see the results.

Roaming can be disabled in Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks.
I've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for the past 3 days or so. In a nutshell, I'm on AllainceRom (which I have been since released) and get constant 4G signal. Wake up, head to work and notice no signal at all. I check and my mobile data was shut off, so connected it. It gets a connection...3G. Turn on/off airplane mode and still 3G. Borrow friends sim card, boot it up and it's 4G. Figuring it's the sim card, I buy a new one. Call Verizon to activate it, BAMM 4G is back. Within 2 minutes after the phone call, it loses signal, then kicks back on, 3G again. I would hit airplane mode on/off and 4G would pop out and all of a sudden it would go back to showing nothing, then revert to 3G again. Any ideas of what can cause this? I'm baffled. I even downloaded the MF1 versus ML1 and it still shows 3G. My download speeds, a blazing 2 megs. Almost feel like I've been throttled or something for some reason.
Has your phone been working fine before and this just started happening over the past few days? Also do you only lose 4G in certain areas?
I know that it is recommended to flash the ML1 modem on any 4.3 based ROM because of potential 4G issues.
This might sound odd, but I think somehow they are throttling me. I'm on the grandfathered unlimited plan. What's odd is that I can take an old sim card (from Thunderbolt), basically cut it to the same size as my S3, reboot and 4G is constant (this phone is part of my dummy line so limited to 2gigs per month). Take out that card, put in new one, it boots up and has like 4 bars while searching for signal, then drops to like 3 and connects to 3G again constant.
4G has been constant here for the past 2 years, Verizon tech support confirmed no outages. My wife and son have unlimited as well, but iphone 4's with 3G coverage. Thinking my unlimited 4G is getting knocked down for some reason.
I tried a new rom, Clean Rom and same results with signal quality. Just odd it happening all of a sudden with no changes.
Also, with my thunderbolt 4G sim card, mobile network type was listed as LTE. With the brand new sim card they activated, it's showing "CDMA -eHRPD", as it was showing with my old card.

I doubt you are getting throttled. Unless you are using up 100+ GB a month constantly. If that was the case you can call tech support and ask if you are. I'm pretty sure they would have to tell you if they were.
Was there something specific you did to your phone before this started happening? Have you tried different ROMs or re-flashing Alliance?
If you've exhausted all options I think something is borked and you need to reprovision. To do this you would need to ODIN to a stock 4.1.2 base and enter the reprovision code into the dialer (*2767*3855#). This will wipe your internal data so I would back up anything you need first. Once you do that you can re-root and flash a custom recovery then flash back to whatever you want.
Just make sure you don't take the 4.3 OTA if you return to stock unless you want to re-lock your bootloader.
That's the odd thing, nothing was changed prior to this switching to 3G, like it happened all of a sudden. I checked my usage and I'm at 19 gigs this month (yeah I tether a lot).
I tried beanstalk rom (4.4.2) and something odd happened. In preferred network type, under CDMA+LTE/EVDO I would get 3G. If I switch it to LTE/GSM/WCDMA 4G would pop up, but no mobile data so unable to make phone calls. With this rom, I would insert my old thunderbolt sim card and 4G all day long again with no issues.
I guess the only option would be to revert to stock and start all over in hopes it'll switch back. I was hoping it was just the icons jacked up, but at 3G my d/l speed was 2 megs, at 4G it would hit 12-14 megs.

If other SIM cards are working correctly, it can't be anything wrong with the phone. I would either go to Verizon and keep asking for new SIM cards until you get one that works, or try to reprovision like I explained earlier.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm rocking stock 4.0.4. now and still only have 3G service. Guess I'll just keep it like this and hit up the Verizon store and have them figure it out since it's stocked back out.

I was experiencing similar issues as you this morning. After an hour of the nice lady at tier 1 tech support telling me to erase everything on my phone and that it was probably bc I was talking to her on the phone while trying to fix it I reached a resolution upon calling back. I was sent to a higher tier tech support and they told me that my data was being throttled and it was directly related to my high data usage.
Confused I asked her how that was possible bc they aren't suppose to throttle LTE. She said there is a problem with their system and instead of only throttling 3G, it was now throttling LTE data. She explained this is a nationwide issue and that some people she has talked to have been experiencing trouble with this issue since March 23rd!!
Similar to you I tried another phone, my nexus galaxy only to experience the same problem. The only thing that worked for me was switching my network mode from LTE/CDMA to Global. I could then tether Netflix and use the data connection without being impeded. However, certain functions like my email (gmail and yahoo) and verizon cloud services would say network error or network communication error.
Strangely tonight my phone seems to be back in working order, I'm not sure if its just because there is no network congestion so I'm not being throttled and it will return or if the issue has been actually fixed.
Now that I think about it, it's possible the tech was wrong and it's a CDMA to lte handshake issue they are having which would explain why global mode would work? It maybe that they upgraded the towers to lte advanced in my area causing these types of issues but hard to confirm any of this with verizon being so tight lipped about what areas have lte advanced.
Replied to your post, I'll update once I get back from Verizon.

I did some searching around and found a couple of pages with ideas but they have not worked so far. Here's the deal, my son's said his Nexus 5 was getting pretty bad reception so I took a look at it. After some toggling of the network settings I discovered that it will only connect to LTE, not to HSPA(+) or Edge. Where we are, we have somewhat weak LTE (2 of the three towers have been "modernized" with LTE and band 2 HSPA+, one has not and it's slightly closer to us). We have a Cell-Fi repeater so we get strong HSPA+ signal in our house. His sim works fine in a Nexus 4 with the hybrid radio getting Edge, HSPA+ and LTE. My nano sim with adapter that works fine in the Nexus 4 exhibits the same problems in the Nexus 5. I tried formatting the cache from the stock recovery menu and am now looking to do a factory reset since I never did oem unlock this phone so I can't just flash a radio to test.
My gut tells me it's hardware so I have my son rebuilding his phone environment on the Nexus 4 so that we can do a factory reset to see if that helps and I'll unlock it at that point. If it doesn't fix it, I've already started the conversation with the play store. My question is, anyone else seen anything like this? Anything else I should try out?

if lte is in your area, and not a perfect signal, itll still choose to connect to lte by default. if you lose your lte connection, then itll connect to H or 3G, and so on. if you do not want it to connect to lte, go to the phones main settings, mobile networks, then change the preferred network type from lte to 3G. or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*, chose phone info, then change the network type to wcdma preferred.

Thanks for the reply, I understand all that. I don't know if I asked clearly enough or not but the problem we are seeing here is that this particular phone can only connect to LTE which is weak inside my house. So, when it tries to switch over, it just won't connect. I also tried to make a call which will switch to HSPA+ and that too fails. Going to the info menu and selecting WCDMA preferred nets me a phone that won't connect, selecting GSM results in the same. LTE only or GSM/LTE works only if it picks up an LTE signal. Ditto for selecting 2G, 3G or LTE preferred in the Mobile Networks menu. I've also reset the APN's, confirmed that the settings match my MotoX, etc and still no joy.
Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

ok, i understand now. i didnt know that it wasnt connecting to h or 3G when it should. to me it sounds like a device ready to get an rma. i mean there is a hardware mod that could possibly fix it, but its not worth the trouble. if you can get an rma, get an rma.

Yea, according to the nice person I spoke to at the play store, I should indeed qualify for an RMA and I should find out in the next day or so. I purchased the phone new in box from someone and they were able to find the phone and they are now attributing the phone to me.
I am curious about the hardware mod though. Is this just for Edge/HSPA or is it for signal in general? If it's signal in general then I'm not sure I'd want to try it since this phone used to work just fine.

yup, thats it
but i would chose the rma route, as the nexus 5 shouldnt be behaving that way.

Yes, agreed. OK, just asking around as much as possible. I'm betting he will be getting a new phone.

(well, everything short of new SIM card)
The situation:
-bought a 32GB N5 from a guy
-I'm on Rogers in Canada
-on Lollipop
-cannot get LTE, only 3G and 4G (H)
-APN is correct
-checked everything in *#*#4636#*#*
-cleared cache
-reflashed facotry image
-tried Cataclysm
SOMETIMES, I'll get "LTE", but it's a phantom - there actually isn't a connection at all.
I've swapped phones many times before; never had an issue. I read in threads someone saying that on AT&T that you need to register IMEI with them to get new device working with LTE. I never had to before, but called Rogers to check if this is something they've started doing.....no.
Under device model, it doesn't say either 820 or 821. It says "Nexus 5"
I started thinking that I stupidly bought the international model off the guy, but then when i was in fastboot mode I saw that it did say 820.
So.............I'm stumped, puzzled and pissed.
Does anyone, ANYONE have suggestions or ideas? Many thanks!
Sanity check but worth investigating:
- Definitely have LTE coverage in your area? I assume other phones around you connect to same LTE network no problem
- Does the SIM connect to LTE in another known working phone?

Yep, coming from my old phone. Have always had coverage in all the areas I've been with this new phone. LTE SIM, LTE area...it SHOULD work, but is not.
Try a new sim at the store, if it doesn't work return it on the spot. No harm, worth a try
Does 3g work? What bands does your carrier run in your area? You might try the diag LTE screen (requires root, there's an app from the Play Store) and see what band it sees. Also have you tried doing a scan of which carriers are available?

3G and 4G work.
I went to Rogers store and got a new SIM. No change.
Same thing...
I'm just posting to let you know I've had EXACTLY the same problem..
Mine occurred after I smashed the screen and sent it away to a company to be repaired. My N5 came back with a new screen, so immediately I upgraded to lollipop...
Then the LTE stopped working. Occasionally the device would say it was connected to 4G but, like you, it didn't work when it showed this. I tried everything, flashing, checking access points, flashing different radios...but nothing worked.
Now I can't work out if the repair company had somehow damaged the 4G antenna when they were fixing the screen. So I sent it back to be repaired (again)
Now i've got it back. 4G works but it has lost a lot of speed. Where I was getting 25mb/sec on average, I now get 10 max.
I've e-mailed the repair centre to find out what they did, but honestly, I've given up a bit now...
Wait, you upgraded to Lollipop? You realize that they included a new radio right? Try reverting modems.
