So looking through the development subforum I noticed that there's a lot of roms there that will probably not work completely for the NS4G. Should there be a separate development subforum for the NS4g? This would make it easier to determine at a glance if the rom is compatible with the phone. It may at the very least help reduce questions from people new to rooting.
(Update) I'd like to make it clear that this thread is based on the assumption that NS roms do not work on NS4G phones. This has been reported on some roms(mainly, data doesn't work). If they end up being compatible with a minor tweak or something, then by all means discard this. (/update)
+1.
would also help to alleviate the sprint vs. t-mobile/cdma vs. gsm arguments that i'm starting to sense...
That's true...and those flamewars can be quite annoying. I'm sure people would appreciate not having to deal with those as often.

we for sure need this now that we know the gsm roms may not work.
+1 for adding a CDMA development area so that things will remain less cluttered
OP should add a poll or make another post with a poll so people can vote
And remove [Q] from title it will only get your thread moved to q/a section

I'm not so sure that is 100% certain yet.
Support for the Nexus 4G was just added into AOSP Gingerbread branch in 2.3.4. So far none of the custom ROMs like CyanogenMod or MIUI have fully merged 2.3.4 into their code base.
There is a chance we will see "universal" ROMs that will work.
Remember, there were three Nexus S devices even before the 4G: i9020T, i9020A, and i9023. And while those are all "GSM" phones, the radios do not work on each other's 3G networks.
I agree if there is danger of easily flashing something by mistake that will brick your phone, make them separate. And when I was first planning on getting a Nexus, I wanted the same thing. But the truth is, now that I've had a Nexus for almost a month, it would suck to have all the variants split up. The ideal solution would be to all stick together to keep the community of developers larger and to have ROMs and kernels that are easily compatible or at least easily compiled for multiple devices (then each dev thread could just link to each version).
Maybe that won't work, but so far, the 4G "dev" section would have a total of like two threads in it. So why not just wait and see what happens?

this might be true, we may need a separate (sub)forum for the NS4G. this phone is still very new and the developers haven't completely dissected the phones software differences yet. Netarchy has already put out a kernel that is compatible for both phones, who's to say that once the differences get sorted out that a rom can't be universal. it would be nice to have one big NS development scene instead of splitting it in two.
just my two cents
I have to agree with joeB on that one
All, just FTR I started this after seeing several ROMs reported as not working with the NS4G. This is assuming that there is some reason why the two aren't completely compatible. If they are, then by all means we should keep the layout the same as it is. I literally just got mine so I haven't had a chance to root or test it, so I'm not a good judge of that fact.
I'll update the first post with the suggestions posted in previous comments.
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but there's separate boards for the gsm hero/ cdma hero :/ seems like we need different forums

SuperAosp 8.0 is a complete 2.3.4 custom rom.
We need a NS4G user to extract their radio kernel (D720SPRKD8) So it can be tried out using a custom rom that is fully 2.3.4 such as SuperAosp 8.0
Here is the thread that it needs to be added to:

I vote for 2 sub / sub forums i.e.
xda-developers > Samsung Nexus S > Nexus S Development
xda-developers > Samsung Nexus S > Nexus S 4G Development
Keeping everything else under the same hat. The roms will have to be different but not the kernels and the rest should be generally the same.
Yes. Sprint Nexus S 4G needs it's own subforum.

Maybe instead of creating deeper and deeper branches of a forum that's already way too branched, people and mods could be smart and label things appropriately.
I'm running the latest honeysense on my inspire. I was reading about flashing different radios and changing the clock speed. What are the benefits from these modifications and where can i find a good guide on how to do it?

Well, there's a lot of info regarding over/underclocking. Searching will provide you with probably more than you'll know what to do with.
As applies to the ROM you're running, the best and most relevant discussion would likely be in the honeysense ROM thread itself.
I know browsing through pages of posts doesn't sound appealing, but it really is a good idea when it comes to this stuff, to get a feel for what others have been doing in this area with that particular ROM.
Now, as far as radios, often times there'll be a radio recommended for a rom, that recommendation could be the result of any number of things.
The stock OTA radio often ends up working the most reliably across a lot of roms. If you're not experiencing any issues with signal quality/data speeds, there really isn't any need to mess with it.
Even after flashing a new ROM, if performance in these areas seems to be degraded compared to your previous ROM, this can often times be addressed by making sure the RIL of the ROM is matched with your radio.
RILs change with each new ROM flash, radios do not. So a mismatch is a common occurrence and can cause radio performance issues, yet is easily remedied by flashing the appropriate RIL.
The inspire only radio thread has all the radio/rils/recommendations/instructions you need...over in the dev section.

RE: Overclocking the CPU
I think this is about the most elegant solution....I'm a CPU guy...so maybe overly weird I do not want some "App" running my over/underclock...This works...and 52 steps should be enough to figure out what works for you in conjunction with something like Llama to toggle the other stuff...JMHO....It is available on a few ROM's now i believe....run adb command though n actually see what clock steps are available: for some reason my cpu is missing a common speed step :-o. . bad qualcom bad

Just an observation here. Maybe someone with more knowledge can answer.
But now that all T-Mobile USA users have S-off... should we open a new forum for T-Mobile USA phones? I ask this because it seems we will have custom ROMs based off foreign RUUs and OTAs all mixed up in the same thread. Which would bring a lot of "Can I flash this if I'm a USA T-Mo user?" type questions.
Now this may just be a misunderstanding and the custom ROMs may not affect the radio or whatever & thus not be an issue. Just the same I felt it better to ask the question and look stupid than keep it to myself and be right.
Anyone?
I don't think any of the forums split the development sections in the way you're suggesting. You should be able to flash any ROM regardless of what the base is. Just have to read up to make sure it plays nice as some introduce bugs.
I understand what you mean but i don't think its needed provided you read the rom post
at one point threre was two forums for the hd2 leo and tmobile us so it can happen
Indeed. The Leo and T-Mobile US HD2 once had their own forums, but they where eventually merged into one once it became clear that with the proper labeling of releases people where more likely to successfully flash something, than not(IE, that's why we enforce the ROM labeling system that we do here, which was kanged from the HD2 section).
As of right now I see no need to split these forums, as currently ROMs seem to be interchangeable between regions and devices.

Okay. I guess that was part of my question. For example, I saw this ROM posted and it's based on official HTC RUU 1.35.401.1
But since I'm a T-Mobile USA user I wasn't sure if the ROM would alter the frequencies my device operates on...etc. I believe this was an issue back when I had the Samsung Vibrant. There was a European variant known as the i9000. We could not flash the i9000 ROMS without having them ported to our Vibrants properly.

I suspect it will be like the different modems on the SGS series of phones ( I had a Captivate ), I tried Mike's rom on my T-mo USA Sensation and when I tested the data speeds I got about 1/2 the dl speed sitting in the same spot within however long it took to run my recovery ( ran speedtest 5 times and averaged out ).
I'm sure they will iron out the radio thing before long, other than the data speed issue the Rom ran perfect.

I am coming from a Vibrant 4g which had sort of fallen to the way side since it wasn't a very popular device so I have not been active on XDA for a super long time.
I just upgraded to HTC One S from T mobile, and I know the usual drill: read, read, read.
And I plan to do that, but i'm looking for the awesome community that I remember so well to offer a little starting point for me.
You see, the things that are common knowledge to you, are simply not common knowledge to me. They may first come up on page 100 of a super popular thread, that is now dead from growing too big.
I remember on my Vibrant, it was common knowledge that you could not enable a certain file system, until you followed a few steps. It was common knowledge, but lost to anyone knew, as it was buried 75 pages deep in popular ROM thread.
So I guess, I'm just looking for the proper nuggets of information on how to get started, how to root easily, what roms I should be looking into etc.
I remember that the one click Root for Vibrant started to become a problem and it was recommended to not try it. Anything similar here?
IN OTHER WORDS: TL;DR
Can anyone provide some insight and good threads about the following as a jump off point for an HTC newbie, and basically an XDA newbie, all over again?
Here's some topics:
Root? Best way to get root? Are there certain HTC ONE models I should make sure I have/do not have before proceeding?
Bloatware? Any installed apps I should ditch as soon as I get root? Any customizations that I should jump on asap? (ie: on vibrant, it was imperative to upgrade to a more accurate battery mod, to keep a better eye on battery levels)
Points/tips? (ie: on the vibrant, for some reason all roms had an issue with blurry MMS texts that was common knowledge, but if you didn't know, and can't live with blurry MMS texts, it was important info before customizing)
Basically, what ROMs are great on this phone? I'm not looking to test a new rom every few days. I want to install a badass one and leave it. I want good battery saving, good customization, awesome graphics, and stability and that will be the one I keep forever. I'll really value any opinions on ROM and customizing in general.

i honestly cannot find anything concrete on determining if it's S3 or S4.
Easiest way is to check the box. S4 chip is 1.5GHz, S3 chip is 1.7GHz. If root took, then you have the S4. If you run quadrant, S4 chips come in at 4500-5100 stock, S3 chips come in at 3000-4000 stock.

HTC announced that the HOS S3 version will sell only in limited markets in Asia and Europe, not the US, and certainly not t-mobile. It will cause added complications for HTC while upgrading the OS to have two different variants for t-mobile.

For roms I would tell you to flash everything and see what you like working with. If you don't have the time or want to do that I would recommend trickdroid. Its fast, snappy, stable, and free of bloat which is nice if you don't have or use titanium backup. If you like a custom stock rom go with Torxx's rom. Its my go to rom. I always keep a nandroid of it handy.

What CM instability are you experiencing? I've had problems with some of the nightlys but I always do a backup so it's easy to revert if needed.
Please read ddurandSGS3 comments, what works for me on my phone may very well not work on your phone. You'd think that a bunch of mass produced phones would be identical but they're not, they're all different and I've learned that with several different brands of phones. A ROM that's absolute perfection on my phone may not even boot on your phone, believe it or not!
Next, you have to consider all the different ways people use their phones.
I've been pretty pleased with Clean ROM but currently I'm back to CM.
