I'm thinking about getting HTC Desire or the Samsung Galaxy S...

The Galaxy S has better specs but it lacks the build quality and software of HTC...So for me it's a no-go anymore!
I've been thinking about these two as well. For me, although the Galaxy S would be great, the lack of software support historically from Samsung, as well as a less certain level dev support for custom roms(the desire has strong dev support), the Desire seems like a slightly better choise. Also, since it and the Nexus One are so similar, any future updates (eg 3.0) are likely to be ported fairly fast, even if HTC decides not to.
I've recently changed from a Polaris to a Desire and the difference is amazing, it's like how I always wanted the Polaris to work but 100 times better! Some people say the HTC implementation of Android makes the transition more intuitive from WM6.1/6.5 to Android. In terms of Galaxy S, the specs seem better but not sure how this translates to real life.

It isn't.
If you want a phone, get the Xperia X10. You may regret it, you may love it.
But you'd know one thing, you were the ONE that didn't chose the HTC or the Samsung.
The Desire is better in my opinion, just go test it and you will love it

Wow okay the suggestions here have been pretty bad (not all though) so let's break this down step by step.
The screen:
The Galaxy S wins for the display department no matter which way you look at it. It has a 4 inch SUPER amoled display while the Desire only has a 3.7 inch amoled display. In addition, the Galaxy S also sports the new MaxTouch sensor, which allows for a more responsive touchscreen and none of the "glitches" that the Desire, the N1, and all other previous HTC devices have.
Speeds:
Both devices are quick. The Desire has slightly more ram to compensate for Sense. It also has more support for overclocking and undervolting which could potentially make it a faster PHONE.
However as a gaming device, the Galaxy S wins hands down because of the hummingbird processor's gpu. You'll get 2x the frames as on the Desire.
This one is left up to personal preference
Form factors:
I think we can all admit that the Galaxy S looks... very iPhoneish. The Galaxy S is also the bigger device (taller and wider), however it is slightly thinner. You porbably won't notice the 2mm difference in thickness.
Also, the Galaxy S is missing a trackball/trackpad which could be a big influential factor in your decision. If you absolutely need a trackpad, go with the Desire.
Again, this is left up to personal preference
Development:
For now, the Desire wins hands down. Samsung is really marketing the Galaxy S hardcore so in the future, you may have equally good dev support for the Galaxy S, however for now, the Desire trumps the Galaxy in ROMs and customizability.

I'll agree!Although I already posted my opinion...
Anyway,what I did was go to a shop that has both available for testing and see for myself.The Desire met my needs.Plus I felt like the Galaxy S was like a fake as it was too light...But that's me!What you do is up to your judgement and your awareness of what is good!
Hm yh, maybe i'll just head to a shop and test em out... Galaxy S seems to be better looking, HTC seems to be better dev...

I used to have a Polaris. And liked the customizability of HTC, but i don't know if i should go with latest hardware or better customizability....
GRR, one thing that makes me on my desire is that I really thought I'll be able to play cool 3d games, watch HD video, listen to great music through fancy music player and shoot cool photos and videos on it just after I get it. But this all is on Galaxy S and that makes me unhappy.
I must wait so long to get this all, that it just annoys me. If you want, you can get the Galaxy S. And I don't reccomend the desire, the samsung is someway better. A whole lot. Except the touchwiz...
I just came home from a shop with a 2hours old galaxy (was thinking of desire or galaxy, but desire seemed to be sold out everywhere I went so the choice was rather easy for me.) I won't try to tell you which phone to buy, I will just say some first impressions of the galaxy.

there are a few things i've found that i dislike with the galaxy so far, no sense (had htc magic before and sense was great there, the samsung ui over android is a bit "boring" but does what it's supposed to).
Another thing is that the "pin" for hanging your phone from a string (ex. to have it around your neck) seems to be a little bit too fragile and doesnt "hook" onto the string like with other models (htc magic etc.) I won't risk dropping my phone.
The size of galaxy is a little bit to much for me but since its 10mm thick it still fits good inside pockets. (Also because of the low weight)
And of course as everybody knows it looks alot like iphone (Which i count as something negative)

And now to the fun part, hd-video on the frak'n great 4inch screen
Looks great and the playback is rather smooth (equal to mini-laptops a few months/year old). The brightness of the screen is amazing, can read messages etc clearly in the sun with sunglasses on, which was rather impossible with htc magic and diamond. This is a big + for me.
Another good thing is the speed in apps (ex. internet browser) which spanks my old htc magic and htc diamond back to the stoneages.
Havent tried out gaming yet though, so won't comment that (check benchmarks for different comparisons)

Im kinda leaning towards the samsung as opposed to a desire. Although i dont think the resale value of samsung is so great. Ive had samsung fones for a while now and ive never really had a problem with them. However theres something about HTC that jus speaks like it was made for modifying. Tbh now im stuck between HD2, I9000 (Galaxy), or Desire. I guess to me it will really come down to the 3D Capability. At the moment Orb is trying to convince me to stick with windows mobile lets see how it goes if i dont stick with it (tbh WP7 doesnt look so amazing) then for me its all about specifications and the fact that the desire has an LED flash makes me ecstatic but the Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy is soooo freaking NICE its really down to preference. I feel the 3D processor speed is gonna really help me make my decision. Even if im not such a gamer on Mobile I still like having the ability to do those extra special things that other peoples fones cant do. EVEN IF its only rarely.

The problem imo with samsung is that it isn't as customizable as HTC devices. Just because there are so many cooks and hackers for HTC devices...
I don't even know if the Galaxy S will get the Android 2.2 update? Probably later than the Desire (i guess).
And why would you play games on a phone btw? (and how? bluetooth controller?). I have a netbook and a gaming-pc. So why should i play games, hmm. Ok, maybe i'll just try gaming a few times, when i'm really bored, but hmm...
It's still a hard decision, it's like: hardware vs customizability (+ quicker updates)
it wasnt the gaming i was highlighting but just its graphics capabilities in general. I pretty much have one attitude for these kind of decisions...

I doubt very much that I will actually play Quake on the phone but knowing the option is there to push the phones graphic ability to maybe dev a nice app or something is always nice. Also im a student so ... you know... gaming in class?

I'd pick the SGSII. I think it'll have better capabilities in the future when it comes to modding.

From my play time with a Sensation, there is no other choice. . It's that good. Sense 3.0 is just superb. And the build quality, style and design of the Sensation pushes it over the top. The SGS2 may be a nice phone, but it just can't even approach the Sensation...in my opinion.

I had the same problem choosing between these two phones. My previous HTC phones had superb build quality and I still think HTC makes incredible devices but after reading some reviews I decided on the Galaxy S II. The screen is undeniably amazing, and even though it has a slightly lower resolution it honestly doesn't matter, the display is that good. Its very fast, thin, and has surprisingly good build quality for a Samsung phone (no creaks at all, like my Desire Z). I haven't been able to slow it down yet, and that's a first for any android phone I have had or tried. At the time hearing about the locked bootloader on the Sensation defiantly made a difference for me coming from the **** that was the Atrix, but HTC has resolved this issue now (I think). As far as Sense 3.0 or TouchWiz 4.0 go I await the day CM7 nighties start releasing so I dont have to deal with stupid manufacturer "improvements" to android. You will have to make the decision yourself, but I can tell you for sure if you get the Galaxy S II you wont be disappointed.

GPS is perfect here, much better than the DHD, stable lock on seconds, build quality is on par with HTC
Add on the huge development teams involved with sgs2 and u can't touch it! I was a HTC fanboy

SII - Brilliant screen and no doubt about that, very good performance and pretty good battery life too. GPS problems seems to be exist in this one too, but when is comes to performance, no compromises, always a better phone, unless you are hooked up to HTC Sense UI
HTC Sensation - super LCD lacks that brilliance that samsung AMOLED holds, but still read that pretty good battery life with idle state, and comfortably survive for 2 days. HTC Sense UI with latest changes does have some lag in the phone, so if you are looking at absolute performance, this might not be the phone.

The big problem is that Touchwiz is no where near the beauty of Sense UI.

Difficult choice, indeed, and I am standing in front of the exactly same dilema... I really dont like TouchWiz, and I really love HTC Sense... but I've read HTC Sense has some issues with smoothnes... I'd say its even here.
Display on SGSII is SAMOLED+, that would be +1 for me, however for 4.3inches, I am afraid that same resolution as on 3.7 inches amoled screen wont look that sharp. HTC on other hand has qHD resolution, but only S-LCD screen, which is not bad, but not as bright as Amoled(yea, I am very afraid of the 'gray' black on S-LCD). its still even fight on this point
Design of SGSII is weird, I dont like it, its like a brick, square, huge. On other hand, HTC came with very interresting design, I like the screen design, its very original. This round owns HTC.
Quality of materials, here again, just as with SGS I, SGSII has been made out of cheap looking plastics, and I dont like it. I have also heard that after two weeks of use, the back cover is making weird noise... on other hand, HTC has again aluminium unibody, where you put the phone into this body. GREAT... +1 for HTC.
Controls, I dont like the Samsung way of doing it, on/off button on side, three buttons, pretty far from each other... its my own opinion, I dont like it, but I guess I'd get used to that(but I still prefer unlocking phone from top) HTC has keys I am used to, but those are again sensors only, not real buttons.. I dont like this, so here its SGSII who takes point, where at least the home button is real +1
HW and performance, so far what I've seen benchmarks(I know its not perfectly accurate) and other stuff, SGSII is way better, it may be caused by SENSE, which is eating really a lot of performance, and may get improved by custom roms, but here I have to give points to SGSII, which has even more memory So far we have it 2:2 for each device
Now, I got into point, that no other things makes any difference for me... each phones have their own issues, SGS is loosing GPS signal, HTC is loosing WiFi and BT while not holding properly. I have also heard that first bunch of HTC's had issue with pocket lint/dust getting under the screen, however HTC is solving this responsibly and fixing the phones straight away.
So, if you ask me, for me its gonna be the one that goes cheaper... so far I can get Sensation for cca 220eur and SGSII for 300eur(both with 18months contract, which I'd take anyways), which makes HTC the winner, just because of the pricing.
Dont take this as a guide, this is bunch of my own opinions and preferences, why I chose HTC over Samsung, you might have different preferences, and performance could be far more important for you than look of the phone as for me, so still this is your choice... If you have chance, get into store and let them borrow you both working phones, put them next to each other and play with them for a moment, then you'll see which one is your champion
I read tons of reviews and comparison videos and went with the SGSII. The SGSII came out on top in most reviews. Loving mine!
Ok so here is the question. I have a choice of those 3 and I am not certain which way to go. I am looking for suggestions that you all have from using the devices and I will provide some sort of criteria so you can give me a better idea.
1. A UI that is intuitive and not a royal pain in the rear to deal with.
2. Seeing as I tend to like to take photo's and watch Movies I would like a device that has a wide range of files it can play but also has a Very good screen and doesn't suffer from banding of lines through the screen and also has good viewability while out doors.
3. Takes good photos and video.
4. I don't care if I have LTE or not considering I am on a 200MB data plan and ALWAYS turn off data unless I Need it when I am out and even than I look for Wi-Fi first.
5. I would Like FM Radio but not a Deal Breaker just like I would Like NFC but again not a deal breaker.
6. Has good Volume when listening through headphones. Don't care so much about external speaker.
7. Has good record at keeping up with Google OS Updates as in ICS and such
Also for those who will say Wait for a different device to come out, that is not an option considering I am running out of time to make a decision within the 30 day return window. I think I have like 8 days left.

None of the above. Import a Galaxy Note instead, it bests all 3 of those. 5.3" AMOLED 1280x800 resolution with a 1.4 GHz Exynos chip.
The SkyRocket is basically the SGS2 with a larger screen. I would choose either of the Samsungs before I would an HTC. I don't much care for the low-quality HTC brand.

Well i think the Notes out since it looks like you will be buying on contract. If you are buying off contract i would recommend the Galaxy nexus which comes out this week and should be available for import soon
The skyrocket is like the galaxy s2 except it has a 4.5 in. Super amoled plus display and 1. 5ghz dual core. If you like to watch movies or videos on your phone then go for the skyrocket

I love my GS2. I think a Galaxy Note would be cool, but I can't imagine a phone with that big a screen. I'm liking the 4.3 vs the 3.5 on my previous iPhone 4

According to you... Samsung's plastic phones are of higher quality then HTCs aluminum uni body phones?
Please explain how u came to this conclusion lol? Please stop spreading BS... average consumer is already ill informed as it is...
The vivid is plastic too, so HTC has no advantages there IRT build quality.

HTC phones have a much sturdier build quality than any other phone manufacturer I know.
OK so a little confused by the galaxy note. Looks like it is released in the UK so I can't get it as I am on att network in the US so I am limited to phones that are available there.
I hate to say it but if i were buying now it would be a Samsung. I don't like plasticky phones, but i do like phones that have quality components, i.e Power buttons that don't die every few months of use, speakers that you can actually hear, or digitizers that don't start registering touches across the screen from where you actually touch it.
Have HTC released a phone yet with a camera that's on par with the ones found in other manufacturers devices, or one that doesn't run through an entire battery in under 4 hours of use? Do thay release devices with beautiful SAMOLED + screens?

Made my choice, out of the 3 I went with the vivid. The build quality is there, fills solid in hand. The battery life is decent (1620 mah) and the screen is much sharper than the skyrocket's. Not everyone likes the oversaturated samoleds, and I didn't want to end up with a wvga screen (stretched to 4.5" looks really bad in my opinion) especially now, when all new highend devices of 2012 will have high resolution.

I was at the At&t store checking out the Galaxy S2, S2 Skyrocket, and the HTC Vivid. I can see why there are many who are fans of the Galaxy S2 phones. The Galaxy S2 is skinny, light in weight, vibrant screen, and has a large battery. However I ultimately believed the Vivid is a better phone for what I was looking for. I found GS2 phones feeling a bit cheap on the outer casing. The plastic felt too thin all the way around and didn't feel very solid. The color on the screen looks very very impressive but often feels unnatural and over saturated (like putting contrast on your TV all the way up). Particularly on the Skyrocket, the WVGA resolution feels very inadequate for screens 4.5 inches and above. You literally can see pixels as they look over stretched on 4.5 and qHD just do a much better job at that size. What really pushed me to the Vivid was that Sense just feel and functions much better to me than Samsung's TouchWiz to an otherwize an impressive hardware.
But either way, both phones will accomplish (pretty much) any task just the same

I would leave AT&T! they get crappy android phones. I left AT&T for T-Mobile and got the HTC Sensation 4G and love it, and my bill is half the price of AT&T's now
The vivid does 1080p at 60fps. That's reason enough for some people to get it. I'm Considering dropping tmobile for AT&T just for that camcorder on that phone.

Yeah. Its amazing. I can't believe the mass amounts of people that say its ugly, garbage, the same.
Granted that 2GHz quad core A-15 would've been worth waiting long but its nice.

Guys, I read some comments on another site that US/Canadian would have a lower CPU to accommodate LTE? I didn't understand that, could someone clarify
I didn't use my upgrade on the SII so I'll be planning on picking this one up in the Pebble Blue. I just can't do white devices. Maybe it reminds me of my childhood with all the Beige/White systems.
Performance seems to be pretty good, a good setup from my Captivate so I am all for that.
So while I would have loved a A15 quad or even better GPU, well, we always want more so I think I will be happy with it. It does not seem as the Nvidia thing is catching up so I hope the whole Tegra exclusive crap is over otherwise, having a super GPU when the games are getting better features only for Tegra wont help me much.
Not sure why someone cannot be happy with the screen. Black is black and everything is punchy. I have a HD projector calibrated so I can be picky but I love Samsung screens.
Now the Q is..how long before stupid ATT brings it here.
USA releases are slotted for June. More info, as always, pending carrier announcements. Those will probably come when their world tour stops off in NYC, from what I'd guess.

Seriously when I read people cons...being about looks I feel the same way...come on now.
Definitely looking forward to upgrade.
There's been speculation that to accommodate LTE in the North American release, they might go with an S4 instead of the Exynos, which is also an excellent processor (though I would have liked to experience the Exynos).
Still, it's almost time to upgrade for me. It'll be nice to experience LTE.

I agree. Never had a phone that lasted this long without me wanting to upgrade..and the way new Roms and OCing kept extending its life its pretty awesome.
Was anxiously awaiting this thing since even though my cappy is beyond amazing, it's begun to feel its age a bit and I'm totally looking forward to a new phone.
I am totally not disappointed and can't wait to finally get my upgrade when it comes out.
The screen is awesome, and since I never got to see super amoled + I can't say I'm going to miss it. I just hope the GS3 is anywhere near as good to me as my cappy has been - although I'm going to miss the build of this phone cause it was awesome.

Same here didn't use my upgrade yet but will wait to see what the US versions specs are. Might be changing from AT&T to Sprint soon as wife contract is up.
I was really disappointed with the Galaxy S3. I will most likely be upgrading to the HTC One X. In almost every situation the One X beats or is a tie with the S3.
Screen: Most reviews say that the One X has a better screen then the Galaxy Nexus, so I believe that with the S3 having essentially the same screen as the nexus the One X's will be better.
Processor/SOC: The S3 will likely have an S4 in Canada so in that case it is a tie. If the S3 does have the quad core in Canada it will probably not be that noticeable of a difference.
Software: Both will likely have great Rom development, but in a worst case scenario, I can live with Sense 4.0, I cannot live with that hideous touchwiz.
Hardware: (IMO) The One X is gorgeous. The S3 is meh. Also, the S3 has a menu button, what were you thinking Samsung! I don't care about a removable battery or sd card slot.
Camera: I'm guessing it will be about the same (Don't care much about camera).

Haha, I found it laughable that the 2 points that made the GS3 win were not related to the actual phone, but instead branding.
However, I can agree with the point. For general consumers, that is definitely a plus. Also, it was a competition on which should be THE Android flagship, and that makes the points even more prevalent.
Most Androids just don't have good presence or accessory support.
I can agree with the decision, but still think the One X is better as a general phone. Especially once ROMed up. When we get source, we'll be blazing!

Great video. I actually kind of agree with your conclusion...the S3 might be the better "flagship", but I'd prefer using the One X on a day to day basis.
When comparing these phones, for me it always comes down to this:
Software can be improved and optimized, hardware cannot. The multitasking issue is already largely mitigated in many custom ROMs, and that situation will only improve once we get kernel source. With the S3, you're always going to be stuck with a pentile AMOLED display and what is, in my opinion, a lower build quality.
Still, having to choose between these phones is definitely a #firstworldproblem, because they're both A+ devices. It is a great time to be a gadget nerd.

I have to say, his video makes the SGS3 look really appealing when viewed from the top. As soon as you flip the phone over, it's ugly as sin.
If we were able to have the back of the One X with the front of the SGS3 including the rounded corners, with the matte coating and materials of the One X, it'd be the best phone ever.
I really just like how the front of that phone looks. ><

Superior display, battery life and design are worth more to me than any other cosmetic issues. HOX wins hands down in all three features I care about.

This company, among others, sells battery back plates for the GS3, its made me seriously consider purchasing the GS3 over the One X.

Good showmanship Arcadia and nicely executed comparison. IMO though, there really is no clear cut winner. You can walk away with either phone and feel satisfied that you own a great device.

I got to play with a DoCoMo (S4) SGS3 for a couple of days about two weeks ago while I was in Japan and compared it to my international One X. Other than the browser which Samsung always does an incredible job with, the SGS3 wasn't perceivably "faster." At least not after I loaded the same 93 apps I regularly use on my phone. Both phones are incredibly fast, noticeably faster than the previous generation of phones. I think when you get down to measuring performance of transitions in milliseconds it becomes irrelevant.
TW vs. Sense is personal preference. TW has been basically the same since the SGS1. Outside of introducing "ploink" and "tink" sounds TW3 and TW4 are 90% the same. Sense is an environment, TW is an OEM launcher and when you're actually trying to get stuff done Sense's comprehensiveness allows you to be more productive. When comparing in-built apps (social, e-mail, music) and integration Sense is a clear winner. If you don't like overlays TW wins because it's less intrusive. I'm surprised more people haven't noticed but TW hasn't been resized for the HD display and presents 20% less information. For example, in settings, you'll see eight options displayed in TW and 10 in Sense. That carries through in everything in TW and Samsung's stock apps. Coming from a i9100 I'm tired of looking at the same blocky, dark, and dreary interface. Sense seems brighter, more polished, contemporary, and is w/o question the better integrated UI.
Some stuff was left out of the review. HTC using partitions so the phone can be connected as mass storage vs. Samsung’s MTP is a big deal for people that transfer a lot of stuff back and forth between their phone and PC. You also don't have to screw around with drivers if you're using someone else's PC. That combined with slower NAND speeds as seen in AnTuTu leaves it half as fast at moving files as the One X. Samsung’s BT implementation is as funky as it’s ever been. The SGS3 had problems connecting and/or reconnecting pretty consistently where my One X never had an issue on the half dozen devices I tried both phones with. Also, A2DP on the SGS3 makes it sound like you’re listening to XM; there’s little separation, crappy range, and music is generally flat whereas A2DP on the One X is the best I've experienced.
As for the other stuff like a non-removable battery, weak multi-tasking and non-expandable storage, it is what it is. If those are hot buttons than the decision's pretty easy on which way to go and all the other stuff becomes secondary.
In case it helps anybody comparing the two phones, here's why I kept the One X instead of getting a SGS3 as I originally had planned.

P.S. - My comparison is to the international One X. I haven't even seen an AT&T version and don't know if some of the things I'm highlighting may be different between the two versions.
I just went to the Sprint store to look at the GSIII and was not impressed. I was seriously considering adding a line to my AT&T account so I can get it, but I have no interest in doing that anymore. First off, the color choices are ridiculous. I hate white phones (aside from the HOX which is just smexy) and the the blue really just isn't for me. Where's the black, Sammy??? I think the color, plastic, and overall shape of the phone really just belie the actual power of the thing, and I don't like that one bit. I am a big fan of industrial design, and as far as Galaxy phones are considered I think the Epic 4G Touch was the most attractive of them all. The screen on the GSIII, while having brilliant colors, was instantly recognizable as pentile and that to me is a major, major deal breaker. Compared side by side with the HOX, well... there's just no comparison. The HOX's screen smokes the GSIII's. The UI was incredibly smooth, I will give them that, perhaps even smoother than my HOX running CleanROM (which is ridiculously smooth), but after using Sense 4.0 for a while, I am once again not a fan of Touchwiz (I loved it on my E4GT). I think it too belies the power of the device because of how colorful and toyish it is. The whole thing just screams toyish and is really hard to take seriously as the powerhouse that it actually is. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone, but I just can't see myself using it. I'm glad I got my HOX and am not jealous of the GSIII in the slightest.
The only thing that is even remotely making me THINK of switching is Developers FLOCK to the Galaxy S phones. They've all been rooted, bootloader lock isn't a problem, and they have source.
I love Android, but not for the stock experience. I like to play, and the SGS III has more to play with, or it least I feel like it will in short order.
Were it not for Scrossler's awesome ROM I'd be rocking a Gnex right now.
I hope to stick with the HOX for a while but if a deal comes up on Craig's list I'll have to seriously consider it.
Pretty fair assessment, thanks for the review. After using the One X for nearly 2 months I exchanged it for the SGS3. The screen is the only thing I am missing, and I miss it a lot!
Makes me VERY excited to know that phones with the total package are just around the corner. That's good news for everyone.

YUP +1, Thats literally the only thing that will make me jump the fence over to the GSIII, the one x multitasking is literally atrocious, chrome reloads pages if i go to change the song on the music player. smh htc, terrible terrible...
btw, good review i liked it, felt as if you were totally spot on with all the problems of the hox (little lag, multitasking etc)
