so is there any way to get past throttling? i tether to my computer and run out of data in less then a day of a new billing cycle. (yes i run thru 5 gigs in less then a day! hahaha) so is there any way shape or form to get rid of this horrible throttling issue?!?!?!
Nope. Not anymore.

Real quick brother don't know if this will work for ya but I got throttled a few days ago and but chance was running speed test to see how slow it really had gotten and I managed to lose my data connection when it restablished I had my 4g speeds again.... I lost it again the next morning but attempted to recreate the event by running speed test and. Then cutting my data connection from the top bar and it worked give it a shot if you want and get back to me

I just cant stop, i feel like im walking on sunshineee.
haha for real though as of now i havent heard of a way to beat the throttle, its more provider side then phone side. I heard there is a plan that has the 5gb cap but never throttles, you have to ask for it specifically and its given to most long time customers (or people who threaten to cancel). Give it a search.
Okay so they are planning on slowing you down once you reach a certain limit they set with their biggest package 4GB I would guess its around that point, how are they going to trottle everyone's speed down to a crawl? Is it going to be like they trottled everyone's speed up in the past VIA software updates? Anyway just curious what you all think and hopefully there's away to not be stuck in a rut on this one, I do a lot of streaming, and multiplayer gaming on my phone...

I have the 30 dollar unlimited plan and i'm using 5-6GB a month and i seem to be fine. But i cant imagine what other people are using.
It's not in effect yet, I do between 6 and 16 depending on if I'm downloading new roms and stuff too, but its suppose to be effective soon.

According to the post on ATT Website, they are putting it into effect on October 1st.
Secondaly, they are only capping the extreme few that are using CRAZY amounts of data, and taht number was WAY WAY above 4g data.
I spoke to a friend at ATT and he stated that currently the cap was at 10gigs. Now, that could change but who knows.
The data throttling is not being done VIA software and such but instead a change to your plan. All ATT phones are tracked via IMEI numbers and thus the way they know who has what number and what data/messaging packages. All they are doing is making a change to your plan that will only allow you to access the EDGE network.
I can see this possibly being bypassed but will have to wait till the change hits to see what can be done to bypass this.
What dept does your friend work in? Mine read about what's going on when and stuff but they didn't give him exact info like how or what the limit was. Edge don't even work when I try so that wouldnt be right because it takes 5 minutes to load a Facebook status.. anyway whatever happens I hope the limit is a bit higher then 10 sometimes I hit 16 and I don't do mobile hotspots, and i connect to WiFi at home. Let's hope for a work around if so!

No offense but its people like you is the reason why tethering has been such a huge issue. Tethering (if you are not paying for it) should only be used for necessity or minor things like checking your email, post a Facebook status message, or upload a photo, so that you are not abusing the feature and bogging down the network/tower you are connected to.

+1 on that one. Won't be long though. All carriers are cracking down and just read something new on the net that google is even getting involved with blocking illegal and/or abusive tethering in the near future.

why so horrified? if you write a check and there isn't enough cash in the account to cover it, are you surprised when the bank dings your account with a huge fee?
Top 5% users..... yeah right.
We all know how this is going to happened, you hit a certain cap, say about 10GB, then they throttle you to slower then EDGE speeds.
It's all their plan to ruin unlimited data for unlimited data users......
Hopefully though, the cap is high, or they ACTUALLY tell the truth for once and only throttle the top 5%, which I'm probably nowhere near (I use 3-4GB a month), so I really won't have to worry about it, but it sucks for people who use 10-15GB a month without tethering, you must not have wifi around where you normally are. :/

Only thing you might try if you have been with Tmobile for awhile call and ask to have you put on the Android preferred plan (plan says unlimited with 5g high speed) but everyone with it have been reporting no throttling..

If you are one of the "lucky" ones who have received the following text message..
"ATT Free Msg: Your data use this month places you in the top 5% of users. Use Wi-Fi to help avoid reduced speeds. Visit www.att.com/dataplans or call 866344758 "
Please go to http://www.change.org/petitions/att-data-throttle#
and sign the petition to stop the throttling of the "top 5%" users.
I personally only used 4GB and received the message.
I signed a contract for unlimited data with AT&T . Not a "limited unlimited data plan". They state that once an "unlimited data" customer is among the top 5% of there data users they will "throttle" the users data speed. Apparently once a user reaches 2 gigabytes of usage they slow down the speed. NOT once they become one of the top 5%.
If you search the website for "AT&T" there are some other petitions you can sign as well. But the one above has the best letter and most signatures so far.
Thank you for your time. Good luck!
Seriously not trying to be an ass but ATT doesn't care.... I HIGHLY doubt they will make a change.
In the meantime I would go here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474482 All credits to the op, The Jack of Clubs.
I always wondered what their criteria was for finding the top 5%. Do they measure it at the end of your billing cycle and compare it to other users? Or measure the amount of data you use so far at a specific date? Or gauge the rate that you are using (ie, 2gb/wk= 8gb/mo)? Obviously everyone has different billing periods, therefore data resets at different times of the month. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or am I just overly confused?

It is worth a shot to try. What they are doing is wrong. How am I in the top 5% when I only used 4GB, some people have gotten the message using a lot less... and I see people on here claiming they are using 10+ GB!!! I am not going down without a fight... If nothing happens... then of course I will be left with no choice but to find a new carrier.
I can't seem to get that APN setting to work... I am going to use my data as normal and see when they decide to throttle me this month.

I honestly think they are just going randomly to the "unlimited" data users and sending them messages and throttling them.
Like I said above, I only used 4GB, some used less and got the message, and I see people on here claiming to use 10+ GB.
Let's not go down without a fight.. it might not go anywhere.. but hey at least we tried... and there is a chance something will happen if enough people voice there opinion....

They're sent to the top 5% in your area. In other words; it's extremely dependent on where you're at. If you live in a small town where there's maybe 300 people with an unlimited plan, chances are you're gonna be in that top 5% a lot sooner.
Personally, I think that scrapping the localisation on this would do a lot of good for AT&T's image. Right now, there's people who can pull 50+ GB of data off their plan, while others who pay the same amount get throttled at 1.2 GB. It's ludicrous. Having the throttling happen based on whether or not you're in the national top 5% of data users would make far more sense..
I'm in
I personally have not gotten the message, but I would surely feel as strongly about it as you do if I had. I most certainly would consider it to be an outrage, mostly because I use about the same amount of data as you do. (around 4gig)
Props also go out to those that have figured a way to bypass the throttling! I'm not currently running a custom rom at the moment, so I don't see all the options available to do so. I've made the settings that I found, but unsure of the impact.
Despite the outcome, this should be fought on principle alone.
On a side note I've often wondered how it is that AT&T is able to charge for 3 services when it all breaks down to sending a data packet? Voice = data packet. Text message = data packet. Data plan = data packet. In my mind this is also a travesty, unless I'm just blatantly wrong. I realize what's inside the packet may change, but in the end it's still a data packet. I imagine this is why all these companies have arisen providing unlimited everything plans for $50 a month, and I think I'm headed that way soon.

I understand its gauged locally, but how is it measured? Everyone is on a different billing period. Mine starts on the 1st while yours starts on the 15th. By the 30th, I've used 5gb and you've only used 2gb. How do they compare your usage with mine and get an accurate (I use that term loosely) estimation of who's in the top percentage at a specific time when they send you that text? The only thing that makes sense to me is them monitoring your usage after your period ends? Or unless it like what op said; random warning texts @ 2gb or so.

and yes.. there "throttled" speeds are basically unusable.

You honestly don't expect everyone else to use data the way you do. I use wifi whenever I can, which is as soon as I get home or when I'm in class. The remainder of the day I'm at my office, or driving around using maps/navigation, emails, browsing, Facebook, words with friends, etc. So I don't have wifi. In my opinion It's Stupid to stream any type of media while your away from your house on a Data connection! You know it's gonna use a ridiculous amount especially if your gonna sit there and stream HD videos over Data! Why wouldn't At&t have a right to throttle your usage, Pure waste. Using GPS and and other type of map software is a less of a waste. Most of you with 16GB sd cards and higher know better! Store all your music and videos on it, that's what its for. Facebook, Email, and some of your multiplayer games use **** for data, nothing barely gets wasted. With your facebook, email, and multiplayer games you shouldn't even go over 1GB of usage a month. Also Note for those sitting their listening to Pandora on their Data connection. Each song is between 3mb-6mb. How many songs do you listen too now multiply that and see how much your wasting.
i got this one month and at the time i was only at 1.4 gb! wtf
I just got online and checked my data usage on AT&T, and I used about 100 Gig this pay period...good thing i have unlimited after being transferred from Alltel
How much do you all use?
100gig WTF ARE YOU using that much data for .. BTW this is nothing more than a e-peenis stroking contest ... and will turn south REALLY fast
I use my phone for Wifi at home. and I didn't mean to create a thread doomed for disaster...let's hope it doesn't become that!?
and this ladies and gents is WHY phone carriers put caps on data ... don't try and defend it 100g is ****ing crazy simple crazy your phones data is not meant to POWER the whole freaking house's internets
alright??? maybe this thread should be locked... my bad.

~0.75-1.5 GB.... never crossed 1.5 GB. Typical - 0.75 - 1.25 GB in any given month, including use of maps, etc. I don't stream music or videos, except maybe once in a while when totally bored.
And as far as using as WiFi at home, get a basic cable internet for like 20 or 30 a month. You'll atleast help people connected to your tower get better speeds.
