I just checked my t-mobile account and noticed I used 220mb of data since yesterday afternoon. How in the world is this possible if I was on wifi 90% of the time?
This sucks because I lose 4g speeds after 2GB of data.
are you sure that's only since yesterday & not from the start of your billing cycle?
I'm a brand new tmobile customer. Signed up yesterday.
Might be the T-Mobile app thing. There was somebody else complaining of high data usage and traced it back to this app.

I'll see if I can find the thread for you
Couldn't find the specific post/thread I was quoting, but I did find this, on Android Police:
Update: Don’t install this app until it gets an update – it will turn your GPS on every 10 seconds to update your location info, and won’t stop unless you Force Stop it from the Manage Applications screen. It was at 68% on my phone’s battery usage menu after 6 hours of doing little with my phone aside from checking e-mail sporadically. Yuck.

If it's using GPS to update your location every 10 seconds, that needs data. So I suspect, if you have this app installed, this could be your problem.
Get a data usage app that tells you what app is using how much data. If it shows that it is indeed this new T-Mobile app, there's your problem
From this post: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...more-for-me-though-were-not-sure-why-exactly/

Just downloaded it. I'm not concerned with data (tho still want to read that post), I'm more concerned with why a lot of apps that I don't even use seem to always be on.
I think it's because they're stock apps and the default is always on. Once we have root, we should be able to get rid of them, and once we can flash ROMs, we can install stock HTC software, or Android Revolution HD
Just another reason to have s-off and root
Ok, after downloading traffic counter, it looks like it IS my fault for the excessive data usage.
It's showing the speed test app as using 130mb of data (since last reboot, which was yesterday). I admit I went a little crazy on the speedtest app yesterday and today (I've never had 4g speeds before switching to tmobile), but why does it use SO much data? I did quite a few tests, but still.
I tried that traffic counter app. XDA is killing my data 27mb. I spend to much time at this place.

As I'm on an unlimited data plan, I don't really care about data usage. I can go up to something like 5gb and my network (giffgaff, easily the best network in the UK) doesn't really care! The only thing I can't do is tether, but I can create a wifi hotspot for when I need to get on the internet on a bigger screen
If you're in the UK, I strongly implore you to take a look at giffgaff. Link in my sig

if you have a fast connection it needs to send/receiver bigger files to get an accurate account of what your speed it. if it only used like a 512KB file then it'd show your speed as 1028238234978234978MBps.

just did 2 tests to test the theory. 30MB down/8MB up
so is there any way to get past throttling? i tether to my computer and run out of data in less then a day of a new billing cycle. (yes i run thru 5 gigs in less then a day! hahaha) so is there any way shape or form to get rid of this horrible throttling issue?!?!?!
Nope. Not anymore.

Real quick brother don't know if this will work for ya but I got throttled a few days ago and but chance was running speed test to see how slow it really had gotten and I managed to lose my data connection when it restablished I had my 4g speeds again.... I lost it again the next morning but attempted to recreate the event by running speed test and. Then cutting my data connection from the top bar and it worked give it a shot if you want and get back to me

I just cant stop, i feel like im walking on sunshineee.
haha for real though as of now i havent heard of a way to beat the throttle, its more provider side then phone side. I heard there is a plan that has the 5gb cap but never throttles, you have to ask for it specifically and its given to most long time customers (or people who threaten to cancel). Give it a search.
Okay so they are planning on slowing you down once you reach a certain limit they set with their biggest package 4GB I would guess its around that point, how are they going to trottle everyone's speed down to a crawl? Is it going to be like they trottled everyone's speed up in the past VIA software updates? Anyway just curious what you all think and hopefully there's away to not be stuck in a rut on this one, I do a lot of streaming, and multiplayer gaming on my phone...

According to the post on ATT Website, they are putting it into effect on October 1st.
Secondaly, they are only capping the extreme few that are using CRAZY amounts of data, and taht number was WAY WAY above 4g data.
I spoke to a friend at ATT and he stated that currently the cap was at 10gigs. Now, that could change but who knows.
The data throttling is not being done VIA software and such but instead a change to your plan. All ATT phones are tracked via IMEI numbers and thus the way they know who has what number and what data/messaging packages. All they are doing is making a change to your plan that will only allow you to access the EDGE network.
I can see this possibly being bypassed but will have to wait till the change hits to see what can be done to bypass this.
What dept does your friend work in? Mine read about what's going on when and stuff but they didn't give him exact info like how or what the limit was. Edge don't even work when I try so that wouldnt be right because it takes 5 minutes to load a Facebook status.. anyway whatever happens I hope the limit is a bit higher then 10 sometimes I hit 16 and I don't do mobile hotspots, and i connect to WiFi at home. Let's hope for a work around if so!

No offense but its people like you is the reason why tethering has been such a huge issue. Tethering (if you are not paying for it) should only be used for necessity or minor things like checking your email, post a Facebook status message, or upload a photo, so that you are not abusing the feature and bogging down the network/tower you are connected to.

why so horrified? if you write a check and there isn't enough cash in the account to cover it, are you surprised when the bank dings your account with a huge fee?
Top 5% users..... yeah right.
We all know how this is going to happened, you hit a certain cap, say about 10GB, then they throttle you to slower then EDGE speeds.
It's all their plan to ruin unlimited data for unlimited data users......
Hopefully though, the cap is high, or they ACTUALLY tell the truth for once and only throttle the top 5%, which I'm probably nowhere near (I use 3-4GB a month), so I really won't have to worry about it, but it sucks for people who use 10-15GB a month without tethering, you must not have wifi around where you normally are. :/

People have been getting nailed right and left, seemingly regardless of ROM. I don't think the update has anything to do with it, they're likely doing some packet inspection to determine what OS the packets are originating from.
when i called in regarding the nasty gram. she emphasized to update my phone. so im guess that is where it is coming from. id agree with you.
Yeah, looks like it was the update. It's weird that all of you got caught those,
I tethered a decent amount a few days ago(don't care if anyone knows, even you AT&T spies!) while my home internet was out, not a thing.
Guess we know not to use any new updates from AT&T until we find out how they detect us without tetheringmanager.apk..

It's because you're using a stock ROM. I believe there's a service (though I can't for the life of me remember what it's called) that can detect if you're tethering or not. Custom ROMs remove the service so they can't tell.

Yeah, I used that much the other week... I've been running CM7 so I'm pretty sure that AT&T is doing some packet sniffing to see the useragent of the packets coming through. I don't think it has to do with the OS you're running.
I got a nastygram saying to stop by September 30th or they'll charge me. So far this month I've use 18gb so I'm sucking as much as I can before they cut me off!!

Works for me and I just updated using the recent 14MB (I think) file the other day. and tethered for a few hours....so far so good anyway.
My wife who has a Streak just got her nasty gram yesterday, now she does tether ALOT, but her phone does not even show a disclaimer for the mobile hotspot like ours does. So, i dont think it has anything to do with the update.
I dont tether alot but I do tether and most months stay around 8-10gigs. (most of that is actually on my phone, I like Netflix)
She is pissed because out where we live we do not have any high speed internet options but we have AWESOME data speeds with ATT but none of the other carriers have anything close. we thought about getting one of those mifi hotspots but ATT only has a 5gig one and that is just a joke to to think 3 teens and 2 adults are going to make that work.

I honestly think it's something to do with your service at the moment. I was throttled recently and my LTE speeds wouldn't even hit close to 1Mbps, but my ping was its normal speed. Your ping is over 3 times what mine is. Granted not everyone is the same but your ping seems awful high to me. Do you remember what your ping normally is when your speeds are fast? Also, when being throttled my speed test would shoot up real fast like normal for just a second before the throttle kicked in. Does yours do that?

Well that doesn't make any sense, if data speeds are your concern. The Nexus 4 doesn't even get LTE.
But these aren't even close to throttling speeds. Those are more on the order of 100-200 kbps from what others have posted on here. Are you on a custom ROM, and if so which one?
If this is a spontaneous change, could just be a network issue.

I lost my unlimited data when my company changed how they did company phones so now I'm on a mobile share plan which I know they won't throttle me on. Why throttle customers that go over their data when they can just charge them more.

Really? I think this phone is extremely easy to mod. Sure, we had to wait to get the bootloader unlocked and s-off but the methods are simple enough to do. Once you have a custom recovery it's exactly the same as any other phone out there.
Back to the throttling thing. Do you know how much data you've used this billing cycle? I used to go over 5GB a month when I was unlimited and never got throttled. The only time I was ever throttled was when I had used a little over 8GB of data with a week left in my billing cycle. I've heard of people getting throttled for less though.

Eh. The phone in general is a pain to even mod. My comment was really irrelevant to everything Lol.

That's part of the fun of rooting... the learning process, understanding how things work and what your doing. These phones are released locked with security flags and whatnot for a reason. You've got countless noobs who can't even understand why a ROM designed for a phone won't work on a phone with completely different hardware. Making things easier is the problem. If anything I think devs should stop dumbing things down. I agree things should be easy to run and use and work as it should when you're stock but if you make the choice to mess with your software it's up to you to diagnose and fix any bugs that may arise.
I wanna be a doctor so I started cutting people open but then realized man this **** is hard! D: They should make it easier!

Well my bill renewed the 19th... but I was in the woodlands and I ran it again and I was getting 20mpbs down and about 9 up. Still not as fast as it was.

Only problem is I ALWAYS get a bootloop when trying to flash a kernel. boot img and all. I have to reflash the stock kernel from the viper xl aroma installer. Terrifies me when I come across that garbage.

If you want to narrow the cause down, the first thing I would do is RUU to stock (make sure you're S-OFF first) and test speeds. Then you'll know it's either the phone(hardware) or the network. And you can call/visit your carrier to find the cause between the two. If it works fine after RUUing, you know it's something you flashed and can work from there or stay stock if you so decide.

20 down and 9 up are good LTE speeds. What exactly are you expecting? That speed is faster than the most people's home internet. Sure it's not the best I've seen but no where near being throttled. That is a good bit faster than all of my friends that use Verizon LTE. When you are throttled it is basically unusable. I had slower than edge speeds when being throttled.
Some kernels you have to flash in recovery and the boot.img for them to work because they load modules and stuff in recovery that just flashing the boot.img doesn't do. I suggest doing the method to get s-off. It's very simple and makes everything much easier.
