[Q] Phone not detected on Kies/MyPhoneExplorer/Android-Sync - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I want to sync my contacts/calendar entries from PC to Android, also access/send messages from my PC via phone.
After googling I found Kies, My PhoneExplorer and Andriod-Sync are suitable options.
But when I start these apps and connect my phone via USB cable, none of them are able to detect(or connect to) my phone.
My PhoneExplorer and Andriod-Sync require phone to have 'USB debugging' enabled.
I tried all three applications with all combinations (usb debugging on/off and usb mode to kies) none of them seem to be working.
My guess is, it is not working since i've flashed a custom rom on my phone (Kyrillos' ROM v9.2) and also partitioned sdcard.
has anyone tried this?
PS: I've tried re-instaling adb/phone drivers, even that did not help.

Go to the thread with all the stock apps from JPU. Download the app called MTPapplication.apk and move it to your /system/app using root explorer.

shouldn't MyPhoneExplorer work even without the MTP? It uses its own app? Or does it still rely on MTP?

I have no idea. Haven't used any of the other apps. All i know is you need MTP to use Kies and Kies is good for syncing contacts etc. (Useless for updating my phone)

Use google contacts, it's very easy to sync them

Hey Smonic,
I installed MTP app and tried connecting, still no luck
MyPhoneexplorer and andriod-sync still dont detect it.
Kies says:
'Cannot start service on the device. Please disconnect then reconnect the device'
I've tried reconnecting several times, it always gives this same message.

Try a wipe of your phone, deinstall all samsung stuff on your pc, then reinstall samsung drivers. If you want to back up contacts use google and if you want to backup sms I think there is an app in the market that can do it.

HELP!! Cannot Sync nor Uninstall Progs.

I tried to sync my Fuze today to install the PIM backup prog. so I can finally update my ROM to the newer one. For some reason, why I open the Windows Mobile Device Center, it keeps saying Error. It won't let me connect via Active Sync, but I can access my files when it is used as a disk drive.
I tried to uninstall any programs, but when I go to the Remove Programs, the box is completely empty!
Can someone help and tell me what could have caused this?
Do I have to hard reset to fix this?

[Guide] Backup Apps & Their Data for Rooted & Non-Rooted Devices

[Guide]
Backup Apps & Their Data for Rooted & Non-Rooted Devices
Purpose: Let's say that you made a high score in subway surfers and you don't want to lose it, then you'll need these two apps to backup the game data.
Helium (Without Root Method):
Helium is an application by Koushik Dutta, who has also developed CWM Recovery.
Important Note:
Motorola devices are not supported due to a bug on Motorola’s part.
Requirements:
1. Rooted or unrooted device with android 4.0 or higher.
2. Computer and USB cable.
3. Helium on your android with Helium desktop app on your computer.
4. If you're using Windows, you've to install ADB drivers, but if you’re using Linux or MAC OS X don’t worry about this issue.
Helium - App Sync and Backup (Play Store link)
ADB Drivers and Helium desktop app
Instructions:
1. Run Helium desktop app and Helium on your device, then connect via USB cable. Wait just a few seconds, and Helium will be enabled. You can now disconnect your device.
Note :If you reboot your device you'll have to reconnect it to re-enable the app.
2. Now to backup, you must select the desired apps and games then click backup. You can select one by one or swipe up the bottom tab to select all. You can backup the app data only to make the backup less size but you must to redownload when restoring or you can back up data with apk (this is pretty helpful but with more size).
3. You can restore on your current device or on a new device using the same sdcard. I think you can also copy /sdcard/Carbon folder from the current sdcard to the new sdcard to restore.
- You can make schedule backups
- If you run to the premium version, you’ll be able to backup and restore from cloud storage.
Titanium Backup (Root Method) :
If you've a rooted device, you can benefit from Titanium Backup automation and flexibility without caring to android version. This app is more featured and works without connecting to computer.
Requirements:
1. Rooted device.
2. Titanium Backup on your android.
Titanium Backup ★ root (Play Store Link)
Instructions:
1. Start Titanium Backup and grant root permissions.
2. You'll see 3 tabs. Enter backup/restore page. You can now see a list of system, uninstalled and user apps which can be filtered.
3. Here you can manually select which apps to backup and restore.
4. Let’s say you want to run a full backup. Select the button on the top right of the screen (batch button) and you'll see many actions. Run “Backup all user apps” action. You can select what do you want to backup or select all. After figuring, tap the green checkmark.
5. For making a full restore, you can enter the batch actions and run “Restore all apps with data" action. The free version will make you press a yes dialog box for each app you want to restore, but the premium version does it all behind the scenes.
Important Notes:
1. Restoring system data can cause serious problems.
2. Restoring system data from one device to another will definitely cause problems.
- You can make schedule backups
- If you run to the premium version, you’ll be able to backup and restore from cloud storage.

Super Backup makes backup for sms & contacts, where Titanum Backup and Helium makes backup for apps and their data (like a saved game in Angry Birds).

OK, you're right, but it requires root. Non-rooted devices need Helium to backup app's data.
Any way, if my guide helped you or you liked it hit THANKS.
I have been trying to get Helium Desktop to install on my Windows 8 64bit PC and keeps giving me a missing DLL error and won't install! I have been searching the internet for days now and all I can read is that others have the same problem, but no one has posted a solution! I'm at wits end on this one! How do you get it installed and where can I find this missing DLL!?!

I had the same problem. It was related to having the Use as Media Device setting checked in the options. Once I unselected it the DLL files downloaded and installed. I don't know why but give it a try and see if that helps.

Actually I don't know how to solve this issue. Maybe you can contact the developer
Very good alternative to Titanium, I usually use Titanium along with a Dropbox account, but this can more, great stuff.
Helium and MDM
While Helium was a fabulous tool for backing up from one tablet and restoring to another, I've encountered an odd problem. The original tablet was rooted, but I used Helium in non-rooted status. Then I restored to a non-rooted tablet. Thereafter, I installed AirWatch MDM only to be told by AW that the new tablet is rooted. I've confirmed through various means that the new tablet is not rooted. However, I suspect Helium does something that trips a flag. Does anyone have any idea on how to clear the flag so that my unrooted tablet will look unrooted to AW?

I suggest to contact the developer of Helium on Play Store and give him the details. Don't forget to tell him what's your tablet

Hey, you can simply see the requirements in the OP
Helium works with rooted and unrooted Android devices but needs 4.0+. I think it won't work with ginger bread even if you have root. I hope that I helped

Did you find a solution for this ? I have the same
Are there any apps that allow you to backup to your desktop? I want to be able to individual backups of the apps I currently have installed, delete the ones I don't use(I need the free space), with the much faster option of just sideloading them instead of having to redownload them from the play store. I don't have enough space on my tablet or phone to make Titanium or Helium backups. Thanks for any recommendations and help.
Edit: NVM found one
Insufficient permissions
When I tried running the shell script on Linux Mint 16 64-bit Petra, it just said
Code:
error: insufficient permissions for device
First I had a problem that the script required changing permissions of the script and adb, but that was not a big of an issue. This however, I don't know what to do with this. USB-debugging was enabled and device was connected.
Edit:
I got this working. I configured the USB-access in udev as per instructions of source(dot)android(dot)com/source/initializing.html#configuring-usb-access. Then I modified it's permissions to read-and-write
Code:
sudo chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
and then I also restarted udev by
Code:
sudo service udev restart
That did the trick and I managed to connect the device.
Problem on Windows 8.1 64 bit
Hi Guys, I've just upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 64 bit, and each time I tried to connect my phone the OS haven't recognized the device. I looked at the device manager and I discovered a generic Android driver provided by Helium.
So I unistalled Helium, restored the USB drivers by Samsung Kies, and now the OS recognized my phone again.
WHy?
Thank you!
Antonio
Thanks for being here, forums, when I need to do something simple and just have a senior moment
Very often, I reset my data on the S3 for try new ROMs, and, every time, I have to re-download all the applications...
Can I backup last version of Helium APP (APK?), so I can install it after the first boot and restore applications?

[Q] HELP!!

I rooted my galaxy note pro 12,2 and uninstalled a lot of original apps. The uninstaller was unable to restore them, therefor did a factoryreset in hopes it would be as new... It did not, now the files are lost forever and i did not take a backup before I started the rooting Is there a way to do a proper factory reset, where all the original apps, settings and files are restored?

Hi!
1: You don´t explicitly state this but it sounds to me like you still have your device up and running. At the very least to the level of being able to do a reboot.
If this is the case then do the following:
If you can then connect the tablet to a computer to wich you have Kies 3 installed in the latest flavour.
Access whatever you want to save and back up to PC.
If you cannot access the file system currently i see no way around ditching your user files.
2: Go to Sammobile.com and download a bog standard Rom from your area and possibly your provider
Follow instructions on the site for installation. See this example. (Note: You have to have Kies 3 installed for the drivers. Even if you can´t back up user files)
When you have reinstalled a std. rom you can reroot and try again.

[SOLVED] I Softbricked my phone, need some help!

-----SOLVED NOTE----
I did a reflash of the stock rom one more time with ODIN and it seems to have solved the problem. However I still have absolutely no idea about what was wrong with the phone, or why the first successful flash did not take care of the problem.
And a piece of advice, do not edit platform.xml. I swear I edited it correctly and then reverted to the correct settings, did using 3 spaces instead of a tab caused an error??? This will remain a mystery for me...
---------------------------
Hello All,
So I have the Verizon S3 i535, I edited the platform.xml file to give write permissions to external sd card and all hell broke loose after I reverted those changes. All of a sudden every app is getting that "unfortunately stopped" message. I cannot send any file to neither the internal nor the external sd card from my pc, file browsers cannot read any file on any of these cards, I tried pushing with adb but that does not work either. I tried factory reseting, and hard reseting to no avail.
I tried reflashing the stock rom with ODIN but after the flashing process nothing changes? (Does that have to do with me being on NE1).
I do not understand what is going on with the phone right now, flashing should have restored everything, I still get com.google.process.gapps stopped working then all sorts of apps stopping in the same manner, I still can't copy any file to any sort of storage on the phone.
Any idea what has happened and how I could fix it?
Thanks in advance.
That type of editing is not something I have done on Android.
Is there any chance it is a permissions issue and could be fixed with root permissions to a file manager or with adb?

I would be willing to try that however I cannot connect to play store, neither the internet app connects to the internet so I cannot install apk's. I cannot "push" apks to the storage too I tried it via pc and via adb. So I cannot even install a root file manager.
Kingo root however accesses the system (through the pc) and manages to install itself. I have no idea how it can do it.

Glad to see you solved the problem.
I was speaking of using an adb shell to change the permissions of platform.xml to 0644 (-rw-r--r--) if they were set to something else. (I just checked my /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml to verify that was the settings on my device. I wasn't any more specific before because I hadn't checked the file locations nor its permissions.)
