[Guide] Backup Apps & Their Data for Rooted & Non-Rooted Devices - Android General

[Guide]
Backup Apps & Their Data for Rooted & Non-Rooted Devices
Purpose: Let's say that you made a high score in subway surfers and you don't want to lose it, then you'll need these two apps to backup the game data.
Helium (Without Root Method):
Helium is an application by Koushik Dutta, who has also developed CWM Recovery.
Important Note:
Motorola devices are not supported due to a bug on Motorola’s part.
Requirements:
1. Rooted or unrooted device with android 4.0 or higher.
2. Computer and USB cable.
3. Helium on your android with Helium desktop app on your computer.
4. If you're using Windows, you've to install ADB drivers, but if you’re using Linux or MAC OS X don’t worry about this issue.
Helium - App Sync and Backup (Play Store link)
ADB Drivers and Helium desktop app
Instructions:
1. Run Helium desktop app and Helium on your device, then connect via USB cable. Wait just a few seconds, and Helium will be enabled. You can now disconnect your device.
Note :If you reboot your device you'll have to reconnect it to re-enable the app.
2. Now to backup, you must select the desired apps and games then click backup. You can select one by one or swipe up the bottom tab to select all. You can backup the app data only to make the backup less size but you must to redownload when restoring or you can back up data with apk (this is pretty helpful but with more size).
3. You can restore on your current device or on a new device using the same sdcard. I think you can also copy /sdcard/Carbon folder from the current sdcard to the new sdcard to restore.
- You can make schedule backups
- If you run to the premium version, you’ll be able to backup and restore from cloud storage.

Titanium Backup (Root Method) :
If you've a rooted device, you can benefit from Titanium Backup automation and flexibility without caring to android version. This app is more featured and works without connecting to computer.
Requirements:
1. Rooted device.
2. Titanium Backup on your android.
Titanium Backup ★ root (Play Store Link)
Instructions:
1. Start Titanium Backup and grant root permissions.
2. You'll see 3 tabs. Enter backup/restore page. You can now see a list of system, uninstalled and user apps which can be filtered.
3. Here you can manually select which apps to backup and restore.
4. Let’s say you want to run a full backup. Select the button on the top right of the screen (batch button) and you'll see many actions. Run “Backup all user apps” action. You can select what do you want to backup or select all. After figuring, tap the green checkmark.
5. For making a full restore, you can enter the batch actions and run “Restore all apps with data" action. The free version will make you press a yes dialog box for each app you want to restore, but the premium version does it all behind the scenes.
Important Notes:
1. Restoring system data can cause serious problems.
2. Restoring system data from one device to another will definitely cause problems.
- You can make schedule backups
- If you run to the premium version, you’ll be able to backup and restore from cloud storage.

Super Backup makes backup for sms & contacts, where Titanum Backup and Helium makes backup for apps and their data (like a saved game in Angry Birds).

OK, you're right, but it requires root. Non-rooted devices need Helium to backup app's data.
Any way, if my guide helped you or you liked it hit THANKS.

I have been trying to get Helium Desktop to install on my Windows 8 64bit PC and keeps giving me a missing DLL error and won't install! I have been searching the internet for days now and all I can read is that others have the same problem, but no one has posted a solution! I'm at wits end on this one! How do you get it installed and where can I find this missing DLL!?!

I had the same problem. It was related to having the Use as Media Device setting checked in the options. Once I unselected it the DLL files downloaded and installed. I don't know why but give it a try and see if that helps.

Actually I don't know how to solve this issue. Maybe you can contact the developer

Very good alternative to Titanium, I usually use Titanium along with a Dropbox account, but this can more, great stuff.

Helium and MDM
While Helium was a fabulous tool for backing up from one tablet and restoring to another, I've encountered an odd problem. The original tablet was rooted, but I used Helium in non-rooted status. Then I restored to a non-rooted tablet. Thereafter, I installed AirWatch MDM only to be told by AW that the new tablet is rooted. I've confirmed through various means that the new tablet is not rooted. However, I suspect Helium does something that trips a flag. Does anyone have any idea on how to clear the flag so that my unrooted tablet will look unrooted to AW?

I suggest to contact the developer of Helium on Play Store and give him the details. Don't forget to tell him what's your tablet

Hey, you can simply see the requirements in the OP
Helium works with rooted and unrooted Android devices but needs 4.0+. I think it won't work with ginger bread even if you have root. I hope that I helped

Hi maw,
Did you find a solution for this ? I have the same

Are there any apps that allow you to backup to your desktop? I want to be able to individual backups of the apps I currently have installed, delete the ones I don't use(I need the free space), with the much faster option of just sideloading them instead of having to redownload them from the play store. I don't have enough space on my tablet or phone to make Titanium or Helium backups. Thanks for any recommendations and help.
Edit: NVM found one

Insufficient permissions
When I tried running the shell script on Linux Mint 16 64-bit Petra, it just said
Code:
error: insufficient permissions for device
First I had a problem that the script required changing permissions of the script and adb, but that was not a big of an issue. This however, I don't know what to do with this. USB-debugging was enabled and device was connected.
Edit:
I got this working. I configured the USB-access in udev as per instructions of source(dot)android(dot)com/source/initializing.html#configuring-usb-access. Then I modified it's permissions to read-and-write
Code:
sudo chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
and then I also restarted udev by
Code:
sudo service udev restart
That did the trick and I managed to connect the device.

Problem on Windows 8.1 64 bit
Hi Guys, I've just upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 64 bit, and each time I tried to connect my phone the OS haven't recognized the device. I looked at the device manager and I discovered a generic Android driver provided by Helium.
So I unistalled Helium, restored the USB drivers by Samsung Kies, and now the OS recognized my phone again.
WHy?
Thank you!
Antonio

Thanks for being here, forums, when I need to do something simple and just have a senior moment

Very often, I reset my data on the S3 for try new ROMs, and, every time, I have to re-download all the applications...
Can I backup last version of Helium APP (APK?), so I can install it after the first boot and restore applications?

How do I backup my settings/contacts/apps/files for a factory reset?

I'm going to do a factory reset on my Nexus S because I heard people who did it and managed to get a bit more of battery time (after having upgraded to a new Android version).
I bought my Nexus S about a week ago, and had to upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6, so I'm curious to see if this will do anything.
Note that it isn't rooted, so I don't know what choices I have available for backups...
MyBackup Pro from Android Market will work to some degree on unrooted devices (paid app with free version also available)
Android will automatically save some settings if you go to Settings -> Privacy and make sure "Back up my data" and "Automatic Restore" are checked prior to factory reset
Otherwise, some apps (like launchers and alarm apps) let you save settings to the SDcard via built in menu options. this is the preferable method of saving settings, IMO
Thanks, I'll think I'll check that out.
I don't really care so much for the settings, but more the data itself. Also, if I backup using that app, will game saves like Angry Birds saves be backed up as well?

I don't think you can touch app data w/o root.. there may be other solutions out there specifically for Angry Birds, I'm not sure.

Damn, that's pretty bothersome... Well, what if I actually root and install Titanium Backup and use it to backup my stuff? Will it work?
I mean, won't rooting have to erase the phone's data? I'm not very familiar with rooting, much less with Android itself...

When titanium backup backs up your stuff it will store it in your sdcard. After it does that, connect you phone to your mac or pc then copy over the titanium backup folder in your sdcard. After that root your phone, when connecting phone to mac or pc the copy backup to sdcard. Titanium backup should see it when you run the app again.
Don't forget to copy your music and pictures/videos.

Unlocking the bootloader wipes the device, I'm not sure if any of the other root methods (oneclickroot, rageagainstthecage, etc) out there are available on Nexus S or not..

TitaniumBackup needs root...
At last, you still have to wipe when you unlock your bootloader for root.

[Q] Best way to migrate from stock N4 to N5 ?

Feel free to assume that the N4 is already running on 4.4 as I only ordered 3hours ago and wont be shipped in less than 2 wekks probably.
What can I save ? Applications settings? Like progresses in games and stuff.

You can save all user apps and data with Titanium Backup or Helium and also messages and all other personal files except off course all N4 system files.
Just use Helium, you don't need root, but you have to enable "usb debugging" in developer mode in your phone and install adb driver (http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html) while connecting the phone to your pc, then install the Helium app on your PC: http://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
Or you can install root to use Titanium Backup. SuperBackup is a good choice if you have root as well, which has an easier interface.
Helium all the way. TiBu is a pain-in-the-ass, but it is tried-and-true. Helium gets everything in one swoop, and restoration is so much simpler with Helium than it is TiBu.

Wasn't active in the scene for a while, ofc I knew about titanium..
but Helium is new to me! Thanks for pointing it out. Gonna try it !
How to backup stuff like e.g. Alarm Clocks ?
Is there any specific folder i could adb pull&push ?
I'm actually having issues restoring with the N5 from my Galaxy S4. It just will not see the backup files no matter how I try to do it, google drive, internal storage or pc download. Anyone else running into this? Maybe it's a 4.4 issue?

[Q] Backup before bootloader unlock?

I am going to unlock my bootloader sometime next week (and root after that ofc).
I already used my phone for several weeks thought, I got it fully configured to my taste.
1. What exactly gets deleted when I unlock my bootloader?
All apps + usersettings + smses etc? Also everything in /sdcard ?
2. What is the best way to backup all data?
I can backup /sdcard alright, but is there a non-root app for backing up all apps + settings?
Helium is a non-root app backup option. You have to pair it with the pc program, but it leaves the backups on the phone. I don't know about what gets wiped, though, I've not unlocked my bootloader.

There is a guide using ADB backup:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-phone-backup-unlock-root-t1420351
Contrary to the guide, I didn't need an encryption password for it to work. I did however have to try it a few times before it would work (it stopped several times--failed), but got a backup eventually. It does reportedly work for the Moto G.
I haven't restored it yet though. I'm in the same boat as you are at the moment and I am preparing to unlock and root once I have all the help and supporting files for the process.

For anyone that is interested, the Helium backup app mentioned in a previous post utilizes this same ADB backup protocol cited in the link above in order to accomplish the backup. Helium just automates the process and slaps on a nicer UI.

Excellent. Now to the tricky parts...
On a side note, with ADB I was able to write the backup straight to PC, but I think writing to the phones storage would be more reliable, then copying it off.
I did not encouter any problems while just simply copying files to storage.

how to save app data on 4.4.2 with bootloader LOCKED?

My phone is suffering a lot of lags, app crashes, and is slow opening new apps/swithching beetween apps, sometimes refuses even to open keyboard due to low ram
I think it's clear that i need to reset factory it or flash a new room
but there is a lot of thing a want to save:
- Some app currently installed version since i dont like the updated version
-Messeger apps history which i need to recover past conversation informations frequently
- Some game scores
- favorites list (app that do not sinc)
I want to backup some part off the phone so that after i clean it completly, i can restore parts that i like (can't be a full backup or else it will keep the problems)
can anyone help me with some tips or link?
Try Helium app
will try the Heliumapp(as soon as i get more free space storage) looks like he can backup both the app(apk?) and the data...hope so...
do you know if it a bug that my moto G need at least free 500mb of storage so it can install an app (even if it's only 1mb)
Yes, it can backup both - app and data. You just need to activate it through PC.
I think that leaving some space is not a bug, but I've never had such little amount of memory, so can't tell for sure.
tried helium, app has a good potential, but turned to be crap because of greedy developers
app works fine for data backup if you do not uninstall the app or flash the phone
if you do reset your phone and upload back helium folder, it will not recognise it's own files because of some json (developers want you to pay PRO for cloud backup)
so, I will try a little more with this app, but pretty sure will need another one
@edit
since my phone is on 4.4.2, I can root it with tethered pie root (which means if i turn off the phone i lose root, but after it boot again, i can root again)
does it help? maybe titanium backup now works?anyone knows?

True, forgot that
This is what I did:
1) made a backup of an app
2) unlocked bl, root, installed custom rom
3) installed this app from play store
4) again made a backup of it
5) replaced some files from the first backup with those with the second one. Unfortunately I don't remember which...
6) restore backup
EDIT: check this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2324232
i've already found it, but as one guy stated, worked with 2 app but not with the third, so i'm not gona take this risc, will wait for a safer backup option
You can try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-backup-app-backup-restore-t2898674
If you got a usbpen whit microusb or and one microusb adapter for a regular usb.
But only the apps (.apk) since its says that "Can backup apps without data for non-rooted devices."

New Pixel 3 setup: Restoring backups fails with both Titanium and MyBackup Pro

I'm setting up a new Pixel 3 (Android 9), and moving from a Note 4 (Android 6.0.1).
When setting up, Google installs some, but not all, apps from the store. The missing apps I expected to restore from redundant Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro backups.
I have successfully installed Magisk 18.1 using the Boot Image Patch method (no TWRP)
Titanium Backup Pro reports it has superuser rights. When I try to restore an app created with the Note 4, Titanium Backup hangs forever on the "Restoring App+Data AppName n.n.nn.n" overlay with the spinning circle. TiBk is unresponsive, although Android is still running and I can see home screen or notifications. Restart is required to clear the pending action. I have run TiBk with USB debugging enabled (if that is still required), but get the same failure.
I also have MyBackup Pro. When I try to restore an apk (or apk+data), it appears to run normally. MBP reports it has superuser rights. At the end of the process the status summary says: Appname: failed: cp: can't create '/data/app/appnamestring-1/appnamestring.apk': Path does not exist.
I tried using MBP to back up an app already installed on the Pixel 3 from the store, and then restore it. It gives the same error, except the place where there is "appnamestring-1" in the Android 6 backup, there is now something like "appnamestring-2fjdk56akjfkdye7dkfja9=="
Also, I observe that the app that was installed prior to this backup restore experiment is no longer present afterward. I re-installed from the store.
Can anyone suggest next steps for solving this issue?

The only way that worked for me is getting my apps installed from GDrive backup (the from settings - > security - > backup or so). Actually this only restores apps from the play store.
Restore via ADB also didn't work for me...

Thank you for the reply! It was rather quiet around here...
But seriously, you can't restore apps? Why?? What is the issue? Why can't an app designed to backup and restore, running with superuser permissions, restore an app?

I found it also quite annoying! Trying to copy apps via cable seems to be only fetching a list of apps from the old phone and then re-installing them. No settings, no data. Also - obviously - only apps from play store! So unusable.
My advise - export, backup etc. all you can from your old phone for import or so.
In regards to Titanium - there's a wayto make it work. I had this once that it got stuck: in the settings there's an option to change the processing mode - see https://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb/titanium-backup-troubleshooting.html , number 29.
You will have to ACK every app to be stored but it should work.
Not sure what I did different to you but it worked for me (titanium). Maybe try restoring app only, then data only. I think I might have done a batch restore from a nandroid originally.
