[Q] Phone specs?? - HTC Inspire 4G

Ok so i was just curious to see what the hardware specs on my phone were so i went to google and searched. Found a bunch of sites saying that the phones specs are 3 gigs memory internal and 768 of ram.
Now when i look at my phone in the settings it say that i only got 1.13 gigs or internal memory and 614 of ram???? Im just confused as to why it would say that and not what every one else listed online.??
Thanks in advance for any help.

The phone has to take up something, doesn't that make sense?

[Q] Disadvantages of a 1Gb internal rom?

Android Newbie Alert: What are the disadvantages of the small 1Gb internal memory with the Galaxy S 4g?
I am trying to decide whether to trade my new G2 in for this phone but I'm worried about the small rom space. I am very tech savvy and plan on putting it through the full paces once I've learned how.
Will there be problems with flashing new roms; multibooting; backing up/restoring?
Limitations to rom types or mods; roms beyond Gingerbread?
Won't a small drive make it slower? I've heard some say the 16Gb on the Vibrant makes it slower. Which is true? (In a Windows PC more space for your system partition = faster system, if you keep the partition within a reasonable size--say 60Gb. True for Android OS?)
I would also think having most apps installed to the SD card would slow things down a lot. I will use my class 6 SD card of course, because I'm sure HTC will stick us with their lousy class 2 cards.
The vibrant lags really bad due to the internal storage, however there ext4 lag fixes that will rid of this problem. The gs4g us low on app storage, only 512 mb but others are reporting even less. The gs4g is very responsive and doesn't lag what so ever. So far I'm liking the gs4g a lot. Just waiting for some custom roms and then it will be all good.

Didn't understand. Can you rewrite? I think you mean the modding will be a problem because of the small space? What problems? Will I regret trading from 4Gb space on the G2?
tq745: You are one of the people who traded the G2 for SGS4G. How many apps do you have installed? Any problems so far? I wish there were roms out already so people could tell me if they're having problems. I need to decide fast. I may already be over my 14 day trial period; I'm afraid to look.
My decision is wavering on potential problems with modding/rom flashing/app storage, and one other thing: The upgraded 4G modem. Others are saying there may be a software upgrade for this??? Or else I may be able to open it up and solder a new modem into my G2??? I think I'll post separately about this in the G2 forum. This would sell me on the G2.
I dont think there will be any problems with custom roms as othe phones have even less rom (nexus one, evo), the problem comes with apps being installed and will probley require you to move apps to SD. I use titanium to move apps to SD.
Had an Aria before my g2. It has a very small amount of system memory and I never had any issues flashing new roms. You can configure Cyanogen to force installation of apps to the sd card to avoid filling the internal memory. Not sure what other roms support that. Otherwise you will have to do some basic housekeeping to move apps to the sd to save memory. Removing bloatware helps too.
I am running cm7 gingerbread on a g2 now and storage management has improved even more. I'm getting the s4g next week and my only concern is that I have always been a HTC guy because they tend to have the most dev support. However the galaxy phones seem to be well supported by the community as well. Looking forward to the extra display size and slimmer form factor.
I'll post again when I get mine.

So far the only real problem I'm seeing with the internal storage is not being able to run Lag-Fix...but really...I don't think you're going to need it. I wanted to run it just to see IF it would speed it up a little more (You know...squeeze out everything you can) but the program is telling I don't have enough internal storage...oh well.
Other than that...Um...Yeah. You will probably eventually have to move some stuff over to the SD. Not that big of an issue, though...I don't think.
As someone else mentioned, root, get rid of bloat ware and use Titanium Pro to move apps to sd and you should not have a problem.

If my understanding of the Galaxy S 4G is correct, you get a 1 GB internal memory (ROM) that's complemented by an included 16 GB microSD memory card, and you can upgrade to optional 32 GB microSD card. Both the 3G and 4G have an additional 512MB of system RAM. Once ClockworkMod is working properly and giving access to modify the internal ROM, the 1GB internal memory will be more than enough to allow the Galaxy S 4G to operate just as well as the current Vibrant 3G with upgraded ROMs. The only downside is the loss of the larger 16GB internal SD memory storage the Vibrant 3G has to 1GB on the 4G.
After reading some more I ran across an article that explained why the available internal memory on Android phones is always so small. I wish I could remember the where I found it because I am not familiar enough with Android to know the terminology.
As I understand it, there is one type of partition for storage, which the user has access to, and another type for the system OS. It is in a completely different format than ext partitions and is optimized to run very fast. The sacrifice for this is that it is read as only half the size of the Ext formatted partition. So even though the OS doesn't actually take double the space, the space is unavailable to the user (sounds kind like Raid actually, without using multiple drives.) So a 385mb partition for a 200mb OS will make 770mb unavailable to the user, leaving 230mb left on a 1Gb drive (is drive the correct term? It is a simple flash drive, yes)?
This is also permanent once formatted this way and can never be undone according to what I've read. This is why we cannot simply repartition to get the space back.
Does this sound correct? Please fill in the errors and details if you know more about this.
I really think Sammy and Tmo took a perfect phone and purposely ruined it. Why would they remove a 16Gb drive from a phone they finally got right? What a tease!
In the end I still don't see a way to avoid problems with 230mb available memory. OS's slow down when they have no place to write new files. SD cards are much slower than internal memory. New apps and better OS's will make a phone like this obsolete in a year. Hmmmm. I see the logic now.
These phones are full-fledged computers, doing more in one day than most PC's do in their life-cycle. Would you really buy a machine with 1Ghz cpu, 512MB ram, 1020p HD touch AMOLED screen, 5.1 surround sound, 802.11n hotspot, 4G, Lastest 3D gaming GPU graphics, HD video camera with 2-way real time video, turn-by-turn GPS, HDMI out,...... and 230mb available hard drive space???? Heck, no!
Of course it has no space left over! In fact a PC would have a lot less if run on a 1Gb hard drive...... Oh, but they'll throw in a 16GB external USB drive, if we don't mind a few freezes and restarts along the way.
Think about the amount of multitasking a smart phone is doing 24 hours a day, using high-end effects that bring most PC's to a crawl..... reliably... while trying to conserve battery life!
Windows 7 can do an almost comparable job... with 3Gb or Ram on a 16GB hard drive minimum, 40Gb including apps, (mine has 1.65TB,) and 3 hours of battery life.
Hope I've put it in perspective.
I'm mad. I'm stuck with a half-a$$ed phone no matter what. And they did it on purpose so I would buy another half-baked phone in a year -- less if they can help it.
That's my rant. I'll go and pout in my corner now.

I just got Titanium backup pro and froze a few annoying apps -- Finance, Amazon MP3, Photo bucket, twitter, and face book.
Still on stock rom, temp rooted.
Then I moved everything that doesn't need a widget or primary access (LauncherPro, Lookout, etc.) to SD
I'm back to where I started with this stock rom; slow unresponsive app tray, widgets FC'ing, and hesitation when trying to answer calls. It was this way out of the box.
This was all fixed when I installed LauncherPro. It was fine with Titanium free. Now it's back. I disabled put the networking and sync settings back to battery-friendly (didn't need to with LauncherPro) and it's still pokey after rebooting.
I don't know about this SD card business. I think my point has just been made for me.
Oh, well 2 more days to romming heaven. Think I'll keep the G2 though. Hope my rain dance to the radio gods ends up working.

I had a long talk with both T-MO and Samsung. I was told by Samsung that the SGS 4G still has 16GB of internal ROM, in addition to the 16GB external SD chip that it ships with. They were very tight lipped about why you cannot see the internal memory the way you can with the former 3G model. I think it has to do with the way they are partitioning it as you say. Partitioning is an easy way to hide the actual size of a given storage space. That is how Windows Vista and 7 hide their Restore partition, in a separate partition in the front of the Drive. Dell also does this with its PC Restore partition using a utility developed by Symantec. I’d like to find a utility that can read the partition structure on these Android devices. DroidExplorer lets you see part of the internal memory but not the partition structure from what I’ve seen.

I was just looking on the TMO support site today at the specs listed and they show: Internal memory: RAM: 512MB; ROM: 1024MB which jives with what I’ve seen at some of the other mobile web sites. What’s strange is that all that talking to Samsung and they could not even interpret their own specs that they have on their own web site. They have yet not responded with an answer by email as they have promised. I guess they justify 16GB ONBOARD on their specs by including or should I say changing the external SD to 16GB. Personal preference I think I should have stayed with the SGS 3G and had the advantage of using some of the trick ROMs that are out for that now. I really don’t care about the better quality camera or the 4G speed. I’m lucky to get a very slow EDGE speed where I live anyway. I guess it depends on who you talk to in tech support and whether or not they even have a clue what they are talking about. I know this from experience. I have worked in tech support for Dell and I was astonished by some of the clueless techs that worked there. There is a learning curve and you can’t know everything but reading the specs from a device is right in front of your face in the tools and reference material these companies provide. You just have to know how to look it up.

Yeah, but the SGS4G is costing me another $150.00 when after the rebate the Vibrant would have been free with the 2 year contract. It remains to be seen if the new phone is really that much better. I would not be that concerned by the added costs except I have been unemployed since October. And YES I would rather have the better toy, If only next week I could count on a paycheck.
Perhaps the only "frustrating" thing for me, at this point, is that the built-in apps, when updated, are truly bloat if they can't be moved to SD card (yeah, I know, root the thing already -- I'm talking about Joe Average).
For example, Google Maps / Navigation v5.2.1 is out, which very unscientifically "feels better" than the as-shipped version, chews up another 8.95 MB of app space. Market self-updated (thanks to that being the default setting for the Google apps, imagine that) for another 4.80 MB.
Nearly 10% of that precious 150 MB already fried just by Google...
I would have to say that it was a poor decision on T-Mobile's part to trim the internal storage so much for the general-public user. At least there are tools for those able to root their phones to move the large number of apps that don't allow native Froyo move-to-SD.

The internal memory - how much is actually available?

I know that they are supposed to come with 4 gigs of memory. My phone its is telling me have have under a gig. Now, I haven't had out long and I only have a few apps. Could myes rooted rom take up all the available space? Or is there's another source? Thanks!

I think you're confusing internal vs SD card storage. My understanding is it's 1GB internal, and they ship with 8GB SD card (originally they were going to ship with 4GB SD so that's why there are some sites with bad specs out there).
I have a ton of apps installed and I still have half my total internal available.
I was told that the phone had four gbs internal in addition to the eight gig card.

I believe you were misinformed. And I stand corrected, it's got 768mb internal, and 8GB flash storage.
Actually it does have 4gb of internal memory, but you can only use slightly over 1gb. This was the same issue with the G2.

I'm not sure this is accurate. What's on the 4gb ROM? Makes no sense to have 4GB of read-only memory on any device.
If the OS\support is generally under 300mb, and is housed within the 768mb, what takes up the 4GB ROM? That wouldn't make any sense. I know there was some bad info that went out when the phone first released.... I think this may have stemmed from that.
I know ot doesnt make sense bit thats what it is. Liok at all stat sheets for.the phone. There is a pile of memory that is rwad only holding a backup of some kind.
Sent from Inspire 4G w/ cm7
The OS itself is stored in the 4 gig internal SD, and uses RAM out of the 768mb. Even though it has 4 gb of internal storage, the way its formatted only let's us use 2 gigs. its formatted for speed and stability rather than size, therefore we lose half of it, then the OS takes up almost a gig, so now were down to 1 gig of usable storage on the internal card, then we have the 8 gb external.
And I believe the 768 of RAM is for running processes, for multi-tasking.

Sounds like the same engineers who designed the AT&T network had their hands involved in this phone's design process.
Let's put a 20 gallon gas tank on a car, but weld a divider down the middle so someone can only put 10 gallons of gas in it. LOL
There was the same issue withe the G2 when it came out. It confused the heck out of a lot of them.

I'm still noy buyin it that there's a mystery 4GB in the phone.
Looking at the root system it's about 500mb, of which 300mb is free (for tasking), and then I have about 250mb of apps installed, which adds up too close to 768 for coincidence in my mind.
If there were a 4gb ROM floating around in there, it'd be absolutely useless. Obviously the OS isn't installed on it, since It's ROM (read ONLY), and apps don't use it as storage (read ONLY), and it's not used for multitasking space (read ONLY), so there's no logical explanation for it.
MY theory is originally the phone was going to ship with 4GB memory card, and they changed it to 8GB at the last minute.... and that was an artifact that got jumbled with the old specs.... because GSM Arena and AT&T both show 768RAM plus 8GB SD Card only.

There is a thread in this forum with this issue questioned, and some guy emailed HTC. The answer we are telling you is the same they tell every one. This is not AT&T HTC phones do this, look at the G2 the Thunderbolt. It isn't a lie they are telling every one. That is what they use the memory for, some sort of back up(I don't know exactly what it is backing up). HTC does this with all the newer phones.....

Looks like the Optimus 3D will be heading to AT&T as LG Thrill 4G. While I'm not sure if I would get this over the SG2, but I'm glad to see AT&T selection for Android phones are getting bigger.
Its the quickest phone so far according to these benchmarks my only beef is that it only has 512mb of ram, i was hoping for a gig. If the bootloader is unlocked this will probably be my next phone, no more samsung for me.
The wife and I are up for upgrades now, it will be this or the SGSII. You guys may not like Samsung, but mine ( captivate ) works great.

It's all it needs to run a single benchmark app. It needs more when you start running a couple of apps that use more memory and it starts closing apps you were using but sent to background. I'll fall back to my old example on my Captivate. When playing poker, I'd set a timer on my phone for blinds, but then I'd go to the browser and watch a live sporting event using Flash which obviously uses quite a bit of memory. The browser alone would use enough memory to close my timer app in order to get more memory, which would mean the timer would never go off.
That's just one time where it was really noticeable, but as apps get bigger and more complex, this will continue to happen more and more frequently. I'm really torn now because I like the idea of the 3D screen, but the 512 MB of memory is a big big negative to me. SGS2 or Thrill? Might just have to wait for the next big thing after that.

Most benchmarks test memory performance, but there isn't really a test for memory capacity since it already has a set value (the total capacity). The memory performance on this phone will probably be great since they said they are doing dual channel, but I just worry if 512 is enough.
AJerman, thanks for the explanation. I'll need to look into this a bit more in terms of what benchmark the media selects to adequately test smart phones. Considering the small footprint apps take in mobile OSs, I suppose apps will eventually list on their product page that a certain amount of free memory must be available in order for it to function properly.
Wait why would you rather get the GS2 over the Thrill? They both have daul core processors, and TI processor in the Thrill seems to be very good. Not only that, they are both 4g. Is the only reason you would prefer the GS2 the RAM? The Thrill had 512 MB RAM, right? how much do you expect form the GS2? 712 MB? I mean, how much of a difference will that make?

The SGS2 will have 1GB. I have 512 MB in my Captivate right now and I run out of memory, thus, I can only assume with 512 in the Thrill, I would run out of memory.
If you are running out of memory with 512mb ram then something is very wrong.
Are you using a task-killer or custom rom?

The wife and I are up for upgrades now, it will be this or the SGSII. You guys may not like Samsung, but mine ( captivate ) works great.
Hope they both release soon.

If you are running out of memory with 512mb ram then something is very wrong.
Are you using a task-killer or custom rom?

Negative, lets do a little breakdown on Android memory here.
512 MB in the phone. A large chunk of that is reserved and the user never sees it. As it stands, I see 342 MB of RAM available for use. Now, that 342 is spread across all running services. Lots of apps stay resident unless the memory is needed. This improves load time for the apps, but they will close if memory starts getting low. Then you have your background services. These are still running and will stay running even in low memory unless you reach a critical point where they have to close too. So it's hard to tell how much you really have free. Right now my phone says I have about ~100 MB free.
Now, open up your web browser and load a Flash video. Good ole Adobe and the memory hogging Flash Player. Flash uses a TON of memory, so you can go ahead and say goodbye to most of what you have free. If you have something else running in the background and it's staying resident in the memory for quick start up, there's a good chance it's going to get killed to free memory for the web browser/Flash Player. If you need memory enough, some background services might even get killed as in the example where my timer app was getting killed when I ran a live flash video from the browser.
Thus, 512 MB isn't enough for phones now and the future. It was okay in the last generation of phones, but these new phones with dual core CPUs are only going to have more and more complex apps, and it's going to be more than Flash that's using a large chunk of memory.

[Q] 1GB vs 2GB RAM on Android 4.0

There has been a lot of internet buzz lately around new 2GB phones coming out, most specifically the LG Optimus LTE2 and the Galaxy S3. I am looking to get a new phone, but the one that has caught my eye is the Xperia GX with Sony's new CMOS sensor.
I was wondering, how is the performance of Android 4.0 with only 1GB RAM, and would the performance increase of 2GB be a significant enough difference to want one of the Korean phones? Does anyone with a current 1GB phone have any issues with performance?
I believe all of the above mentioned phones use the new Snapdragon S4 processor.
Thank you!
I think for now 2GB of RAM is a bit of a overkill, for now, unless you're running fifty apps at once. I think 1GB is plenty enough. I myself own a Galaxy Nexus and it has 1GB of RAM. It ran smoothly even with like a few apps running in the background. Really, if you wanted to run fifty apps in the background, it will kill your battery, so I guess thats the trade off with 2GB RAM.

I don't think has talking about a nexus phone, when buying let's say an HTC evo 4G lte or galaxy3. You see left with very little ram if they were both1GB. My LTEvo is left with only 200 to 150 mb's ram left, but that's with every app I have running. Still when I'm web surfing the web sites easily ready threw the 200 mb's & more so sometimes the browser closes on me all on it's to refresh the memory I'm guessing. So yes I believe the fact that we now use higher resolution screens meaning higher resolution slings & launchers not to mention games, imo we need more RAM, not an extra gig but at least 400 mb's free. That way the launcher on the evo doesn't have to refresh everytime *really about once a week* but the 2 GB's the galaxy had is overkill but at least you won't have any of the referring the RAM every one in a while. Also to be noted in every benchmark between the galaxy3 & ltevo, the evo win's, surprisingly even in the memory I/O! In antutu benchmark & in quadrant the gs3 scores about 4780 while the ltevo scores 5000 to 5300, I peonally scored 545x... So I don't know if SG3 isusing given 2 GB's of slower ram or LTEvo is using faster RAM but it still not bring enough, all in all I will change my LTEvo do to the RAM issue that can be fixed with a simple update.
It's android or it's Windows 7 ultimate?? LOL
1 GB is just perfect.
My pc has 2.13 GHz cpu single core and 2GB ram and runs windows 7, my brother's htc one x has 1.5 ghz quad core cpu and 1gb ram for run android 4.0!
that's incredible
Android does NOT need 2gb of ram. My Galaxy Nexus runs amazing on 1gb of ram, and my Xperia Play ran ICS pretty good and it only had 512mb of ram. Right now a phone having 2gb of ram is just a marketing gimick. I can't see any of the Android releases in the near future needing 2gb of ram to be smooth. In fact Jellybean runs smoother than ICS on the same hardware, so it's getting more efficient, not less.
1GB is GOOD & 2GB is ... :good:
In theory, 1GB of RAM is lots. But I have the HTC One X (North American version) which has 1GB of RAM, and it suffers from crippled multitasking (just search Google if interested). Nobody seems to know for sure, but the general consensus on the root cause is that the HTC Sense software is a RAM hog, and therefore HTC had to modify Android to aggressively kill background apps in order to ensure that Sense performs well. I suspect that had they installed 2GB of RAM, like the Samsung Galaxy S3, the multitasking issue would not have occurred.
I have since installed an unofficial alpha build of Cyanogenmod9 on my device and it multitasks like a dream. So if you're buying an Android phone without a whole lot of bloatware, like a Galaxy Nexus, 1GB should be a lot. But if you're eyeing the HTC One X, you may want to wait for a 2GB model to come out
in future you need 2gb of memory.....
many apps and games improvement in the future......now 1gb it's still enough but in the future??
The more the merrier.; )
2gb is just too much for android, 1gb already runs smoothly, hell even my galaxy s1 with 512mb can run ics smoothly (true story). i think they are trowing 2gb just for people to think it's gonna be faster and smoother but that isn't the case here, though it's not going to hurt if you go for 2gb, it is just that it wont make a real difference.
Confused, frustrated, and abandoning the platform if...
I can't find the bottleneck and get snappy performance.
I'm on a Galaxy Nexus on V. The problem is (and I'm really not looking for business advice - I'm spread too thin for major overhaul) I can't delete my SMS because, many times, it may be the ONLY reference we have for a discussion I had with a customer of what they need(ed), what I charged, when the job was completed. I realize this isn't ideal, but it's (for now) a reality.
I have a HUGE DB of SMS... over 5000. I don't install many apps... of course, I have my gmail account sync'd.
One of my slow-downs was using google-voice... however, even with it removed, it's choppy. Whether moving between home screens, loading my SMS, getting keyboard input on an SMS to respond (which sometimes takes 10 seconds to start recording keystrokes).
I know that if I deleted everything and only had a sparse amount of data (primarily SMS) it'd be faster. And for good reason... managing a DB of texts seems like a lot of data to organize. And that... I assume is controlled by RAM.
And before anyone jumps to conclusions, bare in mind, I own a tech company. There's nothing broken on the phone. It runs the same as EVERY android device I've owned. Pretty fast (generation specific) at first, then, slows down... by month 3, I dislike the phone.
Yes, each generation gets successively LESS painful -- but I have an EXTREMELY fast paced life. I always have 2-6 people waiting for my attention throughout the day... every second counts. And every delay is annoying.
Is this just fatally-flawed-android for you? Unable to deal with a large(ish) DB..? Is this a RAM issue? Is this energy saving issue? I'm currently waiting for the iPhone 5 for a larger screen. If it has one... I'm probably jumping ship. I've exhausted my attempts with android... if either RAM or JB 4.1 doesn't fix this... I give up. I need my messages.
Suggestions? Am I overlooking anything?
THanks
Well more RAM can't hurt you, but it really after all depends on the device you're getting. These days I reckon as long as it isn't below 1GB RAM for a mobile device, then it's ok. As a matter of fact that's great
If I may suggest a mobile device for you to have a good look at, this would be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It's google's flagship phone, it's great, mostly gets the new updates first and is very reliable and clean. It isn't hard to root at all also, and is very true to its core, with google supporting it more than any other device. I currently have a Nexus S, the one that came before it. It's great, but would really need a bump in speed, I can see myself getting a new phone in 6 months, maybe when google come out with a new mobile device.
cheers, and good luck on finding a new phone.
That IS the phone I have.
Thanks,
Truman
It sounds like you have the same problems as iphone users at http://michaelhyatt.com/speed-up-iphone.html in which case switching to iphone probably won't help.
You could use a free app to backup your texts, "sms to text" is one which could help and you can save all or selected texts to txt or csv formats which would also mean you could search quicker when needed or transfer backups to a pc.
It seems it is a smartphone issue as opposed to model specific, based on a lot of googling not my personal experience though, but backing up would allow you to access the data as needed on other platforms.

[Q] Inbuild Memory

Hi,
I recently purchased Samsung Galaxy SII Plus. As per the site, it comes with 8GB inbuilt memory. When I received the phone, it shows only 3.9 GB total space and 3.56 GB space available. When I contacted the seller, they told me that its Android system which is occupying the remaining space. I am not aware if this is the right reason. Does anyone know about it?
It's normal... All Android OEMs lie about the storage space.
For example the HTC One S 16GB comes with 9.3GB which seems a lot more like 8GB to me.

Yeah, I thought it meant 8 GB available to user too, not 8 GB in total including system files. Thanks to my SD card though, I still have 2.7 GB of internal memory free.
Why is the /cache partition 1 GB though, seems a little overkill?
its almost the same for all device(my old ace says it have 512mb,when only bout 180 is available to me). There are no other internal memory stuff inside your phone,so whatever system will definitely eat some of your internal memory.Even laptop manufacturer are the same(320gb only 280 available),what u expect them to say? Sigh,i dont understand why people only make a fuss bout it now, does everyone start using smartphone only after 2013?
Well people need more and more space andOS need more and more space and phone memory isn't increasing dramatically.
